Dear ALL,
I was wondering if I could get some help with setting up VoIP on my
FreeBSD box running FreeBSD 6.2 stable, XOrg 7.2 and Gnome 2.18 with a
generic kernel.
My audio card is Audiogy SE (I know it is a bad choice) and it works
beautifully with OSS compiled from ports. This is osstest and ossinfo

Unfortunately despite the reading 120 pages of OSS manual I could not
get the card to record the sound even with ossrecord let alone
get it to work in full DUPLEX mode via mixer utility necessary for using
VoIP. Yes I did alter permissions and I tried doing everything
from root account.

I came to a conclusion that the OSS driver only partially supports this
card hence
I need another card. (Am I wrong to give up on this thing? Has anybody
been able to use VoIP with this particular card.) I asked this
question on freebsd-question mailing list as well as 10 other forums
including OSS forum and everyone seems mute.
There were some responses from freebsd-question list but people
apparently didn't use OSS compiled from ports but the one from kernel.

Assuming that the answer to my previous question is NO (my card is not
fully supported or nobody has successfully used for VoIP)
I would like a recommendation for new audio card which will be fully
supported
by FreeBSD itself.

I would in particular like to hear from people using Skype or any of SIP
phones. Could you tell me your audio card, FreeBSD version you run,
kernel set up, which driver do you use (are you loading driver on boot
or you recompiled the kernel) mixer set up.

I overheard that even Sound Blaster Live which is really inexpensive and
seems to me as a logical choice has some issues since the Creative was
changed the chip set. (I hope I am wrong)

I was perfectly able to hear people using Skype but they could not hear
me so my conclusion was that sound card is not properly configured
Another indication was that I was not able to record using ossrecord or
at least when I play back I do not hear anything.

Thanks
Predrag Punosevac

P. S. I would be perfectly happy with a reference to a thread if this
issue has been discussed before.

No. Just use one of the multimedia applications which are able to play =20

I don't know what kind of images alcohol creates, but if they are just =20
plain 1:1 copies, then you just need to point you player to the file.

Speaking of Audigy NX 2 (USB) - has anybody else managed to get it
running? I own this device and once tried what's mentioned above, but
with no success.

Hi everyone,

I just installed FreeBSD 6.0 on a HP Compaq DC7600 Small Form Factor PC at
work. It uses an intel 945G chipset. I could not get the broadcom NIC to
work so we replaced it with a D-Link NIC and that works.

The other problem is that the four USB ports on the machine are recognized
and the /dev/ directory has character devices usb1 to usb4 but plugging in
any usb drive (including a USB pen drive) causes the system to hang for
about 4 seconds and then the drive is not recognized. There are no /dev/da*
devices, no dmesg messages and no /var/log/messages either.

I checked the kernel config. Devices umass, ehci, ohci , uhci, usb. da as
well as scbus are all enabled. I am at a loss on how to solve this problem.
Please help.

Thanks and Regards,
Michael.

Predrag, sorry for the mistake.

Thanks and Regards,
Michael.

Out of curiosity why did you install 6.0 version when there is 6.2
version? Are you trying to do auto mount on usb drive or you mounted
your pan manually. HAL really had issues until maybe half a year ago.
The question is which version of HAL you use.
Do you have usbd_enable="YES" in rc.conf file.(usb deamon) I do not
know if the daemon is behaving differently on older machines.
Try to mount thins manually first. I have intell 945G chipset but that
is the North Bridge. What is your south bridge Chipset?

Hi Predrag,

Thank you for your mail.

I installed FreeBSD 6.0 since I was instructed to do so because we want to
test the network testing tools that we develop at work specifically for
systems running FreeBSD 6.0 as many of our customers still use FBSD 6.0

I am not auto mounting the drives.

I am trying to mount the drive manually but /dev/da* does not get created
automatically when the drive is plugged in to the USB slot. There is no
message in dmesg or in /var/log/messages either.

Yes I do have usbd_enable="YES" in /etc/rc.conf

How do you find out which bridge chipset it is?

Thanks.
Michael.

You find the specification of your mother board and the south bridge
chip set should be listed. Should be included in computer documentation
or go to web site of Compaq and check. That is one of the key specifications
of your mother board. If I remember well the south bridge chip set is
in charge with your USB. We could check right away against
hardware compatibility list if there is really some issue with your chip
set. Since you are really running and older version of FreeBSD
and your Compact might be brand new maybe there is some issue. I hope
more knowledgeable get involved in our discussion.

It uses an ICH7 southbridge.

Any ideas?

I have the same south bridge works like a charm with FreeBSD 6.2 stable
even with 6.1 was working
I have the same north bridge. So the hardware is not an issue. That is
good.
Is it possible that 6.0 had troubles with that one or there is another
problem with configuration.

So you are saying that you tried to mount manually and there was a
problem. Is it a problem with just that pen since it might
be an issue with a specific manufacturer. Is pen msdos file system

You are mounting as mount_msdosfs /dev/ugen0 /mnt right?

None of the pen drives are recognized. The pen has an msdos file system.

Did you edit your fstab file? Like
/dev/ugen0 /mnt msdosfs rw, noauto 0 0

I hope you are also trying to do all this from root account so that we
eliminate possibility that something is wrong with
permissions.

What happens wrt /var/log/messages for the devices if you boot verbose?
Do you get any messages when plugging in the device then?

Other than that, please provide dmesg output and verbose dmesg output
(ie boot verbose) somewhere, so people on this list can have a look at
it in order to help you.

First of you can try to mount your images via a memory disk.
See mdconfig(8) and the following example:
http://www.freebsd.org/doc/en_US.ISO8859-1/books/handbook/disks-virtual.html#AEN25376
(of course, you should use "mount -t cd9660 /dev/md0 /cdrom")

Also you can convert mdf images to iso. (try mdf2iso in ports/sysutils).

Thank you all. FreeBSD 6.2 works well on this system. My USB is back to
normal and my drives are recognized.

Thanks again.

Michael.

I apologise if this has already been covered, but having searched rather ex=
tensively for an answer and now in a hurry to resolve an issue I'm could us=
e some answers to this question.I understand that there is nil support for =
firewire audio on linux which doesn't appear to be resolved any time soon, =
and I'm more concerned with using freebsd as a basis for a recording studio=
(portably on a laptop). In particular I'm looking at using an M-Audio fire=
wire device (probably either a Firewire 1814 or a ProFire Lightbridge). M-A=
udio use the OSS people to provide support for their products, but do they =
do all of them? Also, if there is no current support, will there be any in t=
he near future? What would be my best course here?Any answers would be appr=

I am exploring podcast software and the multimedia/podcatcher port has
this list as a maintainer, so I'm posting here. A major new version
(3.0.0) was released in July. Is there someone who can update the port?
Thanks. :)

I'm not aware of any audio driver for firewire devices for the native
FreeBSD audio system. For OSS you have to ask 4Front.

If 4Front has no driver, the only way to use it on FreeBSD is to write
it yourself.

Bye,
Alexander.

I don't know too much about OSS utils / devices, but I would start by enabling the rec devices and seeing what changes every time.... increase the volume of everything all the way up (careful with your ears though!).

for reference, mine shows:

$ mixer
Mixer vol is currently set to 86:86
Mixer pcm is currently set to 85:85
Mixer speaker is currently set to 49:49
Mixer mic is currently set to 0:0
Mixer cd is currently set to 40:40
Mixer rec is currently set to 100:100
Recording source: mic

Did you check OSS docs for samples? you DO have a mic connected to one of your inputs...and the mic is NOT muted right? (trust me, it happens to me every second day..)

sorry I can't be of more help atm.

cheers,
beto

Yes I do have mike connected (not muted) and permission files altered. I
read 120 pages of OSS documentation and I tried every bloody thing. I
will try one more time. Maybe I missed something. Thanks for your output.
Can you use VoIP? What is your sound card?

Thanks
Predrag

Hello,

I have problems with my snd_hda on Fujitsu Siemens Lifebook S7020D - as others - sound in both PC speaker and headphones at the same time. The speaker does not mute when I plug in the headphone jack.

$ uname -srp
FreeBSD 7.0-CURRENT i386

device = '8181104 Intel High Definition Audio Controllers'
    class      = multimedia

I used version from http://people.freebsd.org/~ariff/current.diff
