Hi,

Upgraded to xorg 7 as per /ports/UPDATING. That didn't work well.
Deinstalled -all- pkgs and then clean install xorg 7 and then
openoffice.org-2. It installs with a problem that it wants an older
version of bison but other packages use the newer. Therefore it takes a
portinstall -k openoffice.org-2.

When openoffice (scalc, swriter, etc.) is started, it lasts for < 12
seconds. No messages, and nothing in /var/log/messages.

Any idea what is causing this and how it might be fixed?

Hi!

For the last few days I'm experiencing a strange behavior of OO0. I've
been running OO0 2.2.0 under 6-STABLE (Gnome 2.18 & X.org 6.9 + X.org
7.2) without trouble. As I'm an early adopter of X.org 7.2 and have
been running w/o trouble for weeks, I don't think it's related to
modular X.org.

For the last few days, when starting scalc or swriter (I'm using just
these two) OOo aborts sometimes at the splash screen, sometimes while
opening a doc, sometimes at the very first few mouse clicks - but OOo
aborts for sure.

I've taken the rough path (19h compile time) to compile the new OOo
2.2.1 on my notebook (just finished today) but the result is the same.
I'm building with -DWITH_CUPS -DWITHOUT_MOZILLA LOCALIZED_LANG=de
(using diablo-jdk 1.5 and gcc-ooo-3.4.1_2)

As this issue has really started a few days ago (probably up to 10
days), I think it's related to some other updated port which is
causing incompatibilities with OOo. As OOo does not cause any core
dump (been kicked out of memory w/o error message), I'm unable to say
where it aborts. As it's not easy to start manually, I've been unable
to let it run under gdb.

Is there a way to debug this? I'm not familiar with Java.

This is not an issue with OOo 2.2.1 as I've started seeing these
problems under 2.2.0 a few days ago.

For the very last days, I've found some similar error reports, which
sound all similar, so it seems I'm not the only one who's got that
trouble:

http://www.freebsd.org/cgi/query-pr.cgi?pr=113720
http://lists.freebsd.org/pipermail/freebsd-openoffice/2007-June/003213.html
http://lists.freebsd.org/pipermail/freebsd-openoffice/2007-June/003210.html
and probably:
http://lists.freebsd.org/pipermail/freebsd-openoffice/2007-June/003211.html

`uname -v': (i386 UP)
FreeBSD 6.2-STABLE #9: Sun Jun 17 09:19:04 CEST 2007

Base system is recently csup'ed and build. Ports tree is up to date
and all ports are upgraded to the latest.

Running OOo 2.2.0 on 7-CURRENT (compiled under 6-STABLE) worked but
also shows same behavior for some days. I'm unable to build OOo 2.2.1
under 7-CURRENT as the build for java/jdk-15 is currently broken.

I would love to see where it breaks and post a better failure report -
any suggestions for debugging this, getting backtraces?

Thx

Volker

Hi,

now we see, the the new xorg v7 is splited into a lot of small parts.

Isn't it an idea for OOo to go the same way? Why is OOo such a big,
single package on FreeBSD?

On some Unix/Linux Systems, e.g. debin GNU Linux, OOo comes in
several, small pieces.

There is an OOo-core-package which installs the core-funktionallity,
and the others base on it.

Just think smart: E.g.: You often use OOo-writer and OOo-impress, und
sometimes calc.

You rarely use OOo-draw, OOo-math or OOo-base. So why You should
install all those?

Just an idea

Heino

I like that idea also, I wonder if the configure script has options to
break it up.

I've already reported (like others) trouble starting up OOo. Today
I've found the following in .xsession-errors:

"Window manager warning: Buggy client sent a _NET_ACTIVE_WINDOW
message with a timestamp of 0 for 0x3200056 (OpenOffice)
Window manager warning: meta_window_activate called by a pager with a
0 timestamp; the pager needs to be fixed."

a google search does not show much about that message.

As I still think some recently updated port is causing this, I already
reverted libX11 (from libX11-1.1.2 down to libX11-1.1.1_2) and gtk20
(from gtk-2.10.13 to gtk-2.10.12_2) but the error still remains.

So I'm still doing guesswork and don't know what's causing OOo to
abort. Guys... just a little hint for bug hunting would be nice (or is
it holiday time currently?).

In the meanwhile, I've got an ktrace dump but this IMO does not show
much of use. What other tools should I try if ktrace doesn't point me
to any error?

Following is a diff of changed ports within the last 14 days.

The native source code I mean. (If it's available in the native, it
shouldn't be hard to make it work for FreeBSD

Dear openoffice porting team,
I tried to install /usr/ports/editors/openoffice.org-2 on FreeBSD
7.0 (FreeBSD scone.ki.iif.hu 7.0-CURRENT FreeBSD 7.0-CURRENT #0: Fri Jun
15 14:35:35 CEST 2007) , but unfortunately the after the installation I
have some problem with openoffice. The build process went ok. The personal
installation is working ok. I can start openoffice itself. When I start
opening a file openoffice is collapses and quitting without any notice. I
can start with a new file, but when I try to save it, then openoffice is
collapses. After restart it recognises that a file has to be recovered...

I used jdk-1.5.0.11p5,1 as a java environment, since it is the default in
the FreeBSD 7.0. Also I used xorg 7.2. I think that problem is
related to http://www.freebsd.org/cgi/query-pr.cgi?pr=ports/113720

Do you have any hint to try to resolve the problem?
Thanks in advance.

This is caused by implicit dependecies of dependecies got sucked in:
 you can test this by:

 $ cd /usr/ports/editors/openoffice.org-2 && make make all-depends-list

 The output will give both:
 /usr/ports/devel/bison2
 /usr/ports/devel/bison

Assuming you have the direct dependecies installed:

 Workaround:
 cat << EOF > /usr/ports/editors/openoffice.org-2/Makefile.local

 all-depends-list:
         @${TRUE}

 EOF

 If you add to /etc/make.conf
 DEPENDS_TARGET=package
 USE_PACKAGE_DEPENDS=yes

This swill create packages for all depedencies and
you can build openoffice from the dependecies installed as package.
This works, cause lots of build dependecies of your dependecies are not sucked it.

 kind regards Dirk

Dear openoffice@freebsd.org,

You are listed as the FreeBSD port maintainer for 1 port
whose distfiles are not fetchable from their MASTER_SITES. Could
you please visit

http://people.freebsd.org/~fenner/portsurvey/openoffice@freebsd.org.html

and correct the problems listed there? The individual port with
a problem is editors/openoffice.org-1.1-devel.

If you have already corrected the problems and submitted a
PR, please accept my thanks and apologies for the delay in getting
the fixes into the tree. This reminder is created automatically
and does not (yet) have a way to know if a PR fixing the problem
has been submitted. Please do *NOT* send your response to me
directly; I do not necessarily have time to commit your fix; please
instead submit a PR via 'send-pr' so it doesn't get lost.

Problems are usually of two types:
1. The software package has been upgraded and the version in the
port has been removed. The best solution to this problem is to
upgrade the port to the most current version of the software package.
If you are a FreeBSD committer, then you can just upgrade the port
directly. If not, you should create the updated port on your own machine,
test it (and maybe even run "portlint" on it), and then use "send-pr"
to submit a "diff -uNr old-port updated-port". If you added or deleted
any files, please make an explicit note of it.

2. The mirror site being used no longer contains the software package
in question, or no longer exists. Solutions include:
	a) If there are other mirror sites, just remove the bad site
from the list. (Make sure that what appears to be a bad site
isn't actually a problem of type 1, upgrade)
	b) If the README or other support files in the software
documentation mention where to get the software package,
	use one of those sites.
	c) Use a search engine to find another place to get the original
DISTFILES. Make sure that you don't pick a FreeBSD distfiles
mirror -- if you can't find any other places where the file
exists, it can be a LOCAL_PORT or you can simply comment out
the MASTER_SITES= line, with a comment explaining why.
Once you have a solution, use "send-pr" to submit a "diff -u" of the
Makefile.

Note that this isn't an urgent issue, as people who try to
build the port now will just fall back to the FreeBSD distfiles mirror.
Please just put it on your list to do and get to it when you have time.
These messages will continue to arrive twice a month until the fix is
committed, as a reminder.

Thanks,
  Bill "distfiles" Fenner.
