I'm about to install FreeBSD 6.2 (or attempt to) on my PowerPC 7400 (G4) 400Mhz Tower. Specs: http://www.everymac.com/systems/apple/powermac_g4/stats/powermac_g4_400_agp.html I tried a day ago, but ran into problems, and well, I tried installing some other distributions. My first attempt after FreeBSD was NetBSD. I was having problems with that too, so I THOUGHT I was installing OpenBSD, but I had put the wrong disc in the drive, and ended up installing Debian (which btw, was very easy, so that was nice). Well, Debian isn't what I'm used too. I'm used to BSD's and frankly, I feel they are more stable, but thats another topic. So then I went back to trying to install NetBSD, and gave up on that. So I switched to OpenBSD, but that was even more cryptic. I gave up on FreeBSD because I thought it was impossible ( or really difficult because there wasn't "official" support for PPC ). Anyway, 'nuff said. I've gained some good experience from those other distributions. I'm ready to tackled my favorite again (FreeBSD). I'm pretty sure the reason why it was failing before was that I didn't understand partitioning very well. I know what partitioning is, but I'll admit, I didn't do my homework on filesystem types etc. So, armed with this new knowledge, here is what I'm going to attempt. I was hoping I could get some feedback on if it sounds reasonable or not, and if any of you know common pitfalls, could give me a heads up. Partitions: 4.00 MBs of HSF+ (Mac OS Extended) for /boot 256.00 MBs of HSF+ (Mac OS Extended) for swap *.00 GBs of HSF+ (Mac OS Extended) for / (root) So I'll have three partitions. I think that should be enough. I've got 6.2 iso on a CD-R, and I'll be booting off that from the mac (either with the 'C' key or via OpenFirmware) Once there, I will follow the instructions on screen, and partition ( apparently I do it again here? I'm not sure, maybe its just telling FreeBSD which partitions to use ) my / (root). Then I guess I need to drop down into 'disklabel' and tell it to use my swap partition as the swap. I'm not sure how to accomplish this without interrupting the installation process. Tips/explainations on this would be great. I'll try and document my steps with your help and write a small tutorial that is really straightforward for more novice users like myself. So anyway, once I get all my partitions set up (I really think this is where I was borking it) I'll pick developer or minimal (I like installing things myself) and just let it do its thing. Cross my fingers, and try not to pull my hair out. What do you all think? Sorry for the HUGE email :) Thanks for bearing with me. Cheers, -- Robin From owner-freebsd-ppc@FreeBSD.ORG Tue Nov 6 05:04:55 2007 Return-Path: Delivered-To: freebsd-ppc@freebsd.org Received: from mx1.freebsd.org (mx1.freebsd.org [IPv6:2001:4f8:fff6::34]) by hub.freebsd.org (Postfix) with ESMTP id 6761516A420 for ; Tue, 6 Nov 2007 05:04:55 +0000 (UTC) (envelope-from info-grants@SoftHome.net) Received: from trinity.rocler.com (trinity.rocler.com [216.137.96.58]) by mx1.freebsd.org (Postfix) with ESMTP id 21C6813C4AC for ; Tue, 6 Nov 2007 05:04:54 +0000 (UTC) (envelope-from info-grants@SoftHome.net) Received: from hfhjfhjfjf-7456hh4g (dsl-dyn-107-107.rocler.com [216.137.107.107]) by trinity.rocler.com (8.14.1/8.14.1) with ESMTP id lA63xItx026041 for ; Mon, 5 Nov 2007 22:59:19 -0500 From: "Canadian subsidy directory 2007" To: freebsd-ppc@freebsd.org Date: Mon, 5 Nov 2007 22:59:53 -0500 MIME-Version: 1.0 Message-ID: <1194275408cb7ca7a5ef2b41e06fe2169538587404@SoftHome.net> Content-Type: text/plain; charset="iso-8859-1" Content-Transfer-Encoding: 8bit X-Scanned-By: MIMEDefang 2.63 on 216.137.96.58 Subject: =?iso-8859-1?q?Press_release_/_Communiqu=E9?= X-BeenThere: freebsd-ppc@freebsd.org X-Mailman-Version: 2.1.5 Precedence: list List-Id: Porting FreeBSD to the PowerPC List-Unsubscribe: , List-Archive: List-Post: List-Help: List-Subscribe: , X-List-Received-Date: Tue, 06 Nov 2007 05:04:55 -0000 (Message en francais ci-dessous) PRESS RELEASE C A N A D I A N S U B S I D Y D I R E C T O R Y Legal Deposit-National Library The Canadian Subsidy Directory 2007 is now available, newly revised it is the most complete and affordable reference for anyone looking for financing. I can't access the mac once I start installing. I mean, I can't drop down into a shell and copy the files off the CD, because the disks aren't mounted. Could someone detail this step a bit more? I think this is where I'm getting hung up. Also, what if the mac is too old to understand Target mode? Holding "T" down on boot doesn't do anything other than give me a big O with a \ through it. Thank you all for your help! When I got home, I reformatted my drives, and partitioned into 3 sections: swap UFS root HSF+ Mac OS X Extended+Journalized. well, needless to say, that didn't seem to work. After it was all installed, I couldn't mount those partitions from OS X. The weird thing was that I couldn't mount root. Swap seemed to be ok. So, I went into Disk Utility, and wiped root. Made sure it was still HSF+, and rebooted. I tried installing FreeBSD again, and it went smoothly. When I came back into OS X, there was nothing in root. It was completely empty. Why!!?!? I mean, the installation went all the way through. How could it be empty? Grr this is frustrating. I tried the same thing with Peter's miniinstall, 6.2, and 7.0 -SNAPSHOT. Same results. What am I possibly doing wrong? I tried pretty much every combination between UFS and HSF+. OSX can't understand FreeBSD's UFS format, so it won't mount the volume. The next thing to do is to - boot OSX - mount the FreeBSD install CD - copy /boot/loader from the CDROM to /loader on OSX - reboot into OpenFirmware - remembering the partition number that FreeBSD root lives on (e.g. 8 for the purposes of this example) 0 > boot hd:loader hd:8 .. and then you should be away. later, Peter. I think it's an error in int10 configuration rules. Looks like there should be a line of the form: @INT10_STUB_TRUE@INCLUDES = $(XORG_INCS) .. since the int10 code is a stub on FreeBSD/ppc. There is a rule exactly like that for INT10_VM86_TRUE - since that is false, it generates a commented-out line in the resulting Makefile: #INCLUDES = $(XORG_INCS) So, I uncommented out that line. The int10 directory built, and I'm now on to the next error :) later, Peter. Some of you have bee helping me get FreeBSD up and running on my PPC. (Thanks for all the help) I have just a more general question, which is, when do you think (if ever) FreeBSD will be supported on PPC via Tier 1. More specifically I guess, do you think it will ever be to the point where the installer will work smoothly without having to hack around with the open firmware etc.? It would be so nice to re-commission this otherwise useless computer to a speedy FreeBSD server. Standalone OS wise too. I hate having a seperate partition for OS X. Part of my reason for wanting to put just the underbelly of UNIX on the mac was so I could avoid the bloat of OS X (I love os x to death, its just too much for this poor mac) I'm curious because I've seen other systems do it (Debian for one) and it just seems like if their code is open source, sharing it shouldn't be that hard. Oh well, I guess I can keep dreaming :) -- Robin On Nov 7, 2007, at 1:55 PM, Peter Grehan wrote: > Hi Robin, > >> When I got home, I reformatted my drives, and partitioned into 3 >> sections: >> swap UFS >> root HSF+ >> Mac OS X Extended+Journalized. > > Other than the partition that is running OSX, the types of the > other partitions don't matter. That's an easy one :) I should have added that to my email. # sysctl hw.ofwfb.relax_mmap=1 The Xorg driver attempts to mmap a region larger than the size of the actual device's framebuffer. Rather than wading through X (not my favourite activity), it was easier to just allow the mapping. X doesn't use more than what it finds on the actual device (this can be seen from the startup log), so random memory isn't being trashed. later, Peter.
