The GENERIC kernel used to boot in gdb's powerpc simulator, psim, and will with some minor changes (that I need to submit). I use psim extensively to debug low-level code, and it's useful for machine-independent code as well. Most recently, I used it to make sure ULE would work. Gxemul's OpenFirmware implementation runs in real-mode ala pre '99 Apple hardware. The FreeBSD loader and kernel don't deal with this, though they could with some effort. Not sure about Qemu - haven't tried that for a while though from memory it had the same issue At one stage I had a large patch-set for PearPC (v2) that would allow FreeBSD to boot from CD, but that project seemed to die after a promising start. later, Peter. I've downloaded the latest QEMU CVS tree and installed it, there was a ppc issue in the 0.9.0 release. I then tried loading FreeBSD 7 and 6.2 ISOs in QEMU without success. A debian ppc ISO boots with QEMU, but not the FreeBSD ISOs. Has anyone run into this? I'm new to FreeBSD and QEMU ppc as well. Thanks in advance.... Here's the error I'm seeing: Memory size: 384 MB. Apple ISO images use a 'hybrid HFS/ISO9660' format: http://developer.apple.com/technotes/fl/fl_36.html See the 'makehybrid' option at http://developer.apple.com/documentation/Darwin/Reference/ManPages/man1/hdiutil.1.html ... and the "-hfs" option to mkisofs: http://cdrecord.berlios.de/old/private/man/cdrecord/mkisofs.8.html FreeBSD/ppc CD's are built in src/release/powerpc/mkisoimages.sh with the following options: mkisofs $bootable -r -hfs -part -no-desktop -hfs-volid $LABEL -l -J -L -o $NAME $* You may want to look at Debian and see if there are any differences there. Hmmm, maybe we should be using the "-apple" option. Another unpleasant job would be to dig into QEMU's OFW emulation code (http://perso.magic.fr/l_indien/OpenHackWare/index.htm) and try and work out what is going on. later, Peter. The Debian seems to have a couple other options: --iso-level 2 --netatalk --chrp-boot -hfs-parms MAX_XTCSIZE=$newsize Besides chrp-boot, which I need to look into, I don't think there's a lot there that makes a huge difference. They both use a CHRP boot script, but the -chrp-boot option appears to do something in the iso header. When you repartition, the safest bet is to use UFS for the FreeBSD ones. Not that OSX can read FreeBSD's UFS (or vice-versa), but this allows FreeBSD to recognise those partitions as being usable. later, Peter. This changes. Already with gpart you cannot make kernel dumps on partitions that are not of type "freebsd-swap". In the future we will probably have newfs(8) check the partition-type in order to determine which file-system to create. The same applies to fsck(8). Fortunately: the tools are there in FreeBSD to repartition and change partition types. The only problem is that we don't have them available during installation. It is my intend to have sysinstall switch to gpart on platforms that most need it. However, it's not something that will happen for 7.0-RELEASE... -- Marcel Moolenaar xcllnt@mac.com From owner-freebsd-ppc@FreeBSD.ORG Sat Dec 15 22:27:02 2007 Return-Path: Delivered-To: powerpc@freebsd.org Received: from mx1.freebsd.org (mx1.freebsd.org [IPv6:2001:4f8:fff6::34]) by hub.freebsd.org (Postfix) with ESMTP id 7052A16A469;
