May i suggest that either in the subject line or at least in the body one puts a human-readable description (e.g. "fixes for memory leak on sysutils/memcheck") rather than a machine-language one ("fix ports/104560") of what the mail is about ? A full URL in the body of the message would also be great. Especially on a global list such as port-developers, it is very useful that one can quickly identify things he is interested in, and filter out the rest thanks luigi From owner-freebsd-python@FreeBSD.ORG Tue Jan 23 11:25:37 2007 Return-Path: X-Original-To: python@FreeBSD.org Delivered-To: freebsd-python@FreeBSD.ORG Received: from mx1.freebsd.org (mx1.freebsd.org [69.147.83.52]) by hub.freebsd.org (Postfix) with ESMTP id 3E7ED16A403; Tue, 23 Jan 2007 11:25:37 +0000 (UTC) (envelope-from pav@FreeBSD.org) Received: from nat-application.b1.lan.prg.vol.cz (nat-application.b1.lan.prg.vol.cz [195.122.204.152]) by mx1.freebsd.org (Postfix) with ESMTP id B430213C47E; Tue, 23 Jan 2007 11:25:36 +0000 (UTC) (envelope-from pav@FreeBSD.org) Received: from pav.hide.vol.cz (localhost [127.0.0.1]) by nat-application.b1.lan.prg.vol.cz (8.13.8/8.13.8) with ESMTP id l0NAt5fS009196; Tue, 23 Jan 2007 11:55:05 +0100 (CET) (envelope-from pav@FreeBSD.org) Received: (from pav@localhost) by pav.hide.vol.cz (8.13.8/8.13.8/Submit) id l0NAt4Y0009191; Tue, 23 Jan 2007 11:55:04 +0100 (CET) (envelope-from pav@FreeBSD.org) X-Authentication-Warning: pav.hide.vol.cz: pav set sender to pav@FreeBSD.org using -f From: Pav Lucistnik To: vd@FreeBSD.org In-Reply-To: <20070123104738.GA41157@qlovarnika.bg.datamax> References: <20070123104738.GA41157@qlovarnika.bg.datamax> Content-Type: multipart/signed; micalg=pgp-sha1; protocol="application/pgp-signature"; boundary="=-XjrWI+DZ4Xm1GS989t2e" Date: Tue, 23 Jan 2007 11:55:04 +0100 Message-Id: <1169549704.6221.10.camel@pav.hide.vol.cz> Mime-Version: 1.0 X-Mailer: Evolution 2.8.2.1 FreeBSD GNOME Team Port Cc: gnome@FreeBSD.org, ports-developers@FreeBSD.org, python@FreeBSD.org Subject: Re: The way to fix ports/104560 X-BeenThere: freebsd-python@freebsd.org X-Mailman-Version: 2.1.5 Precedence: list Reply-To: pav@FreeBSD.org List-Id: FreeBSD-specific Python issues List-Unsubscribe: , List-Archive: List-Post: List-Help: List-Subscribe: , X-List-Received-Date: Tue, 23 Jan 2007 11:25:37 -0000 --=-XjrWI+DZ4Xm1GS989t2e Content-Type: text/plain; charset=ISO8859-2 Content-Transfer-Encoding: quoted-printable Vasil Dimov p=ED=B9e v =FAt 23. 01. 2007 v 12:47 +0200: > Please take a look at ports/104560 (and also ports/105853 and > ports/106120) and come to a consensus what is the right way to fix this > issue. >=20 > I am sure we can come to an agreement and shortly commit a fix. This fails to deal with installing the site-packages in the appropriate site-package directories. The same site-package directory can't be used because the pyc and pyo format changes between python implementations, so python needs to be able to generate the appropriate wants per python installation. For ports that use USE_PYDISTUTILS (which is the most common way to install a python package) ${PYTHON} is used, so I don't see why other ports shouldn't follow the convention. I do _agree_ that something should always be installed as python, without version, but that doesn't mean that ports should just assume python when installing. They should use ${PYTHON} to be safe, and to make sure things are installed where the user wants them to be installed. I should (at least) have copied several lines of text from the PRs to the body of the mail so one can get a grasp about what it is all about without loading URLs (or worse composing URLs based on something like ports/104560). So - my initial mail is about the following: x11-toolkits/py-gtk2 expects bin/python to be present, but lang/python25 does provide only bin/python2.5. One way to fix it is to fix x11-toolkits/py-gtk2 itself, and the other way is to alter lang/python25 so that it provides bin/python. There seems to be disagreement about which way to go between gnome@ and python@, thus I brought this out of public to ports-developers@. Thanks for noting my cryptic mail, I will have this in mind in the future. --=20 Vasil Dimov gro.DSBeerF@dv % It's always easier to go down hill, but the view is from the top. --azLHFNyN32YCQGCU Content-Type: application/pgp-signature Content-Disposition: inline -----BEGIN PGP SIGNATURE----- iD8DBQFFtfgaFw6SP/bBpCARAk0oAJ93aFb0dJn3wlO+m5YQ/jur8rw+sQCfb6du /u1CEFVcqAAcgZAo/K8I7hI= =XGcg -----END PGP SIGNATURE----- --azLHFNyN32YCQGCU-- From owner-freebsd-python@FreeBSD.ORG Tue Jan 23 12:10:37 2007 Return-Path: X-Original-To: python@FreeBSD.org Delivered-To: freebsd-python@FreeBSD.ORG Received: from mx1.freebsd.org (mx1.freebsd.org [69.147.83.52]) by hub.freebsd.org (Postfix) with ESMTP id 1599C16A401; Tue, 23 Jan 2007 12:10:37 +0000 (UTC) (envelope-from vd@datamax.bg) Received: from jengal.datamax.bg (jengal.datamax.bg [82.103.104.21]) by mx1.freebsd.org (Postfix) with ESMTP id B58E813C468; Tue, 23 Jan 2007 12:10:36 +0000 (UTC) (envelope-from vd@datamax.bg) Received: from qlovarnika.bg.datamax (qlovarnika.bg.datamax [192.168.10.2]) by jengal.datamax.bg (Postfix) with SMTP id B0E03B848; Tue, 23 Jan 2007 14:10:35 +0200 (EET) Received: (nullmailer pid 41710 invoked by uid 1002); Tue, 23 Jan 2007 12:10:35 -0000 Date: Tue, 23 Jan 2007 14:10:35 +0200 From: Vasil Dimov To: Alexander Botero-Lowry Message-ID: <20070123121035.GA41675@qlovarnika.bg.datamax> References: <20070123104738.GA41157@qlovarnika.bg.datamax> <1169549704.6221.10.camel@pav.hide.vol.cz> <20070123112924.4023339F66@cherenkov.geekfire.com> MIME-Version: 1.0 Content-Type: multipart/signed; micalg=pgp-sha1; protocol="application/pgp-signature"; boundary="nFreZHaLTZJo0R7j" Content-Disposition: inline In-Reply-To: <20070123112924.4023339F66@cherenkov.geekfire.com> Cc: gnome@FreeBSD.org, ports-developers@FreeBSD.org, pav@FreeBSD.org, python@FreeBSD.org Subject: Re: The way to fix ports/104560 X-BeenThere: freebsd-python@freebsd.org X-Mailman-Version: 2.1.5 Precedence: list Reply-To: vd@FreeBSD.org List-Id: FreeBSD-specific Python issues List-Unsubscribe: , List-Archive: List-Post: List-Help: List-Subscribe: , X-List-Received-Date: Tue, 23 Jan 2007 12:10:37 -0000 --nFreZHaLTZJo0R7j Content-Type: text/plain; charset=us-ascii Content-Disposition: inline Content-Transfer-Encoding: quoted-printable On Tue, Jan 23, 2007 at 03:31:29 -0800, Alexander Botero-Lowry wrote: > > > Please take a look at ports/104560 (and also ports/105853 and > > > ports/106120) and come to a consensus what is the right way to fix th= is > > > issue. > > >=20 > > > I am sure we can come to an agreement and shortly commit a fix. > >=20 > > As I see it: > >=20 > > - lang/python metaport must be removed > > - all lang/python2? ports will install $PREFIX/bin/python binary > >=20 > > How that sounds? > >=20 > > Or if people absolutely need to have several different pythons on a > > system, make the bin/python automatical symlink, like in perl ports. > This fails to deal with installing the site-packages in the appropriate > site-package directories. How so? You don't need to have interpreter called python2.5 to install into 2.5's sitelibdir. Once the current damage is fixed, as outlined above, these steps will need to be implemented: - user settable mechanism to select non-default python install, PYTHON_VER=3D5.6 in make.conf or on command line, perhaps - patch to bsd.port.mk to allow installation of same pkgorigin into different sitelibdirs (or is this possible today? haven't checked). This one will be tricky - we must only allow this for ports that install entirely into pythonsitelibdir and nowhere else. Ideas? - finally, end apps that embed python in shebang line, will have to be patched when installed. No need to do this patching to build scripts, I believe. --=20 Pav Lucistnik Alignment: Neutral Greedy --=-IDyhv9ael/t7m1qkoJDV Content-Type: application/pgp-signature; name=signature.asc Content-Description: Toto je =?UTF-8?Q?digit=C3=A1ln=C4=9B?= =?ISO-8859-1?Q?_podepsan=E1?= =?UTF-8?Q?_=C4=8D=C3=A1st?= =?ISO-8859-1?Q?_zpr=E1vy?= -----BEGIN PGP SIGNATURE----- Version: GnuPG v1.4.6 (FreeBSD) iD8DBQBFtg2antdYP8FOsoIRAjqbAJ93nwfmQXWNsZDR+cuJiz0TOuMk4QCfZwVM 6+f7Oa85GRf8fGwLDTia4nQ= =mIc3 -----END PGP SIGNATURE----- --=-IDyhv9ael/t7m1qkoJDV-- From owner-freebsd-python@FreeBSD.ORG Tue Jan 23 18:34:23 2007 Return-Path: X-Original-To: python@FreeBSD.org Delivered-To: freebsd-python@FreeBSD.ORG Received: from mx1.freebsd.org (mx1.freebsd.org [69.147.83.52]) by hub.freebsd.org (Postfix) with ESMTP id 3A28D16A401; Tue, 23 Jan 2007 18:34:23 +0000 (UTC) (envelope-from alexbl@FreeBSD.org) Received: from cherenkov.geekfire.com (cherenkov.geekfire.com [66.206.86.94]) by mx1.freebsd.org (Postfix) with ESMTP id 1BBDA13C4B8; Tue, 23 Jan 2007 18:34:22 +0000 (UTC) (envelope-from alexbl@FreeBSD.org) Received: from localhost.my.domain (c038h213.dorm.reed.edu [134.10.38.213]) (using TLSv1 with cipher DHE-RSA-AES256-SHA (256/256 bits)) (No client certificate requested) by cherenkov.geekfire.com (Postfix) with ESMTP id CD86E39C4C; Tue, 23 Jan 2007 10:31:55 -0800 (PST) From: Alexander Botero-Lowry To: pav@FreeBSD.org In-reply-to: <1169558939.6221.32.camel@pav.hide.vol.cz> References: <20070123104738.GA41157@qlovarnika.bg.datamax> <1169549704.6221.10.camel@pav.hide.vol.cz> <20070123112924.4023339F66@cherenkov.geekfire.com> <1169558939.6221.32.camel@pav.hide.vol.cz> Comments: In-reply-to Pav Lucistnik message dated "Tue, 23 Jan 2007 14:28:58 +0100." Unless your bin/python is actually 2.5 python. I see two possible ways out: 1) patch a lot of python using ports to call ${PYTHON} instead of python 2) create a tool, that will set up PREFIX/bin/python to be a symlink or a copy of a python2X binary the user desires to use at a moment, prior the start of compilation. `use.perl port' equivalent, really. Approach number one takes a lot of patching. Approach number two imposes an administrative burden on end users. We should pick on of these approaches, and commit to it. Are you going to address other issues pointed out in this thread? Also, what would you say about adding text like this to Porter's Handbook? The FreeBSD Ports Collection support parallel installation of multiple Python versions. Ports should make sure to use a correct python interpreter according to user settable PYTHON_VERSION variable. This means, mostly, replacing the path to python executable in scripts with value of PYTHON_CMD variable. Ports that install files under pythonsitelibdir should use PKGNAMEPREFIX=3D ${PYTHON_PKGNAMEPREFIX} so thier package name embeds the version of python they are installed into. --=20 Pav Lucistnik Fairy tales do not tell children that dragons exist.
