In order to run savecore you have to have file systems mounted. In order to have file systems mounted you have to have swap. Short term fix is to disable swapping on the system long enough to get the dump, then reboot with swapping turned back on. Longer term I have some patches for a fairly complicated dance between savecore, swapon and disk mounting around here somewhere. I'll try to resurrect them, but that's not likely to happen till later this week. hth, Doug On Mon, 26 Nov 2007, Robert Watson wrote: > > > FYI. > > > > Robert N M Watson > Computer Laboratory > University of Cambridge > > ---------- Forwarded message ---------- > Date: Sun, 25 Nov 2007 18:33:13 -0800 > From: Jeremy Chadwick > To: freebsd-stable@freebsd.org > Subject: Re: RELENG_6 kernel panic + savecore(8) problem > > On Sun, Nov 25, 2007 at 06:21:36PM -0800, Jeremy Chadwick wrote: >> I believe the problem is that /etc/rc.d/swap1 is being run before >> savecore. The original 4.4BSD "Unix System Manager's Manual (SMM)", found here: http://docs.freebsd.org/44doc/smm/02.config/paper-6.html Indicates the following (found under the "System dumps" heading): - Kernel dumps write from the end of swap and work backwards - The kernel uses swap from the front and works forward - This way it reduces the chance of swapping overwriting the dump during the boot process until savecore is run This somewhat more modern posting suggests that is still the case: http://unix.derkeiler.com/Mailing-Lists/FreeBSD/stable/2005-11/0703.html However the FreeBSD Developers' Handbook suggests a behaviour that does not match the current reality: http://www.freebsd.org/doc/en_US.ISO8859-1/books/developers-handbook/kerneldebug.html#EXTRACT-DUMP Can anyone speak with more authority on this...? --Antony From owner-freebsd-rc@FreeBSD.ORG Sat Dec 1 11:10:03 2007 Return-Path: Delivered-To: freebsd-rc@hub.freebsd.org Received: from mx1.freebsd.org (mx1.freebsd.org [IPv6:2001:4f8:fff6::34]) by hub.freebsd.org (Postfix) with ESMTP id 7BD7316A417 for ; Sat, 1 Dec 2007 11:10:03 +0000 (UTC) (envelope-from gnats@FreeBSD.org) Received: from freefall.freebsd.org (freefall.freebsd.org [IPv6:2001:4f8:fff6::28]) by mx1.freebsd.org (Postfix) with ESMTP id 77C2513C455 for ; Sat, 1 Dec 2007 11:10:03 +0000 (UTC) (envelope-from gnats@FreeBSD.org) Received: from freefall.freebsd.org (gnats@localhost [127.0.0.1]) by freefall.freebsd.org (8.14.2/8.14.2) with ESMTP id lB1BA33S034372 for ; Sat, 1 Dec 2007 11:10:03 GMT (envelope-from gnats@freefall.freebsd.org) Received: (from gnats@localhost) by freefall.freebsd.org (8.14.2/8.14.1/Submit) id lB1BA31d034368; Sat, 1 Dec 2007 11:10:03 GMT (envelope-from gnats) Date: Sat, 1 Dec 2007 11:10:03 GMT Message-Id: <200712011110.lB1BA31d034368@freefall.freebsd.org> To: freebsd-rc@FreeBSD.org From: Jeremy Chadwick Cc: Subject: Re: conf/118255: savecore never finding kernel core dumps (rcorder problem) X-BeenThere: freebsd-rc@freebsd.org X-Mailman-Version: 2.1.5 Precedence: list Reply-To: Jeremy Chadwick List-Id: "Discussion related to /etc/rc.d design and implementation." I found it quite educational/informational. The documentation Antony provided seems to indicate two things: 1) That savecore(8) should really be run before swapon(8) -- I don't see any indication that swap needs to be made available prior to mounting filesystems, which is what Doug B. was stating was a necessity. 2) That even regardless of Item #1, savecore(8) should be working (assuming that kernel dumps are still written from the end of the swap device to the front (e.g. backwards)), and that swapon(8) shouldn't be stomping on kernel dumps. I haven't tried changing the rcorder of the /etc/rc.d scripts in question to see if it works. My gut feeling says it probably will, but I'm not sure of the implications. The dependency if I recall correctly is: savecore needs file systems mounted, which need to be fsck(8)ed, which may need swap depending on the size of the file systems. The real problem is fsck(8). It can be a real memory hog in some situations (in which case it will need swap to function properly). If at all possible I would recommend increasing the size of the swap partition as a work-around. > 2) That even regardless of Item #1, savecore(8) should be working > (assuming that kernel dumps are still written from the end of the swap > device to the front (e.g. backwards)), and that swapon(8) shouldn't be > stomping on kernel dumps. Yes, if the size of the swap partition is big enough that the two don't collide. Apparently, in this case the swap space probably isn't large enough.
