Put /boot/loader onto the TFTP server and name it after your machine's IP address in hex, in all caps, such as '0A64648E' for 10.100.100.142. When you type 'boot net' at the ok prompt, OpenPROM will do RARP, and then TFTP for that filename to whatever IP answered the RARP lookup. When /boot/loader gets control, it will call back to OpenPROM for access to the network chip and console. It will use DHCP. Set up DHCP on some machine, and use 'options root-path' to point /boot/loader to the root filesystem. ex.: host amber { fixed-address amber; hardware ethernet 08:00:20:01:02:03; option root-path "69.31.131.61:/export/nboot/amber"; } /boot/loader will read all the other /boot/... stuff it needs over NFS, so make an NFS share for it. Use '-maproot=root' in the exports file on the NFS server. Don't use bootparams at all. RARP and TFTP must run on the same machine. DHCP can run on a different machine if you like. Thank you. But there's one more problem (Please forgive my ignorance, but everybody has a first time) I don't really know how to manage NFS. I should probably read a guide and so on, but maybe you (Or someone) could give a quick guide on how to set up a share? Also, another problem is that I'm using my router for DHCP, is there any way of doing this without giving extra options via DHCP? I could perhaps solve it some other way, but given the hardware I possess, it'd be easier if this could be solved without using a DHCP server on a box. You can avoid the need for RARP by typing "boot net:dhcp".. at least, that's how I net-intalled my X1. What type of recordable media are you using and how did you create the disc? It's possible that your optical drive can't read the media you used, or that it doesn't like the options you used when creating the disc. Does the system recognize the optical drive that's installed? If you execute "probe-scsi-all" at the ok> prompt, the drive should show up in the listing. -Damian From owner-freebsd-sparc64@FreeBSD.ORG Tue Apr 24 21:18:07 2007 Return-Path: X-Original-To: freebsd-sparc64@freebsd.org Delivered-To: freebsd-sparc64@freebsd.org Received: from mx1.freebsd.org (mx1.freebsd.org [69.147.83.52]) by hub.freebsd.org (Postfix) with ESMTP id D6CD516A401 for ; Tue, 24 Apr 2007 21:18:07 +0000 (UTC) (envelope-from nitro2k01@gmail.com) Received: from ug-out-1314.google.com (ug-out-1314.google.com [66.249.92.168]) by mx1.freebsd.org (Postfix) with ESMTP id 50B2413C44B for ; Tue, 24 Apr 2007 21:18:07 +0000 (UTC) (envelope-from nitro2k01@gmail.com) Received: by ug-out-1314.google.com with SMTP id 71so252037ugh for ; Tue, 24 Apr 2007 14:18:06 -0700 (PDT) DKIM-Signature: a=rsa-sha1; c=relaxed/relaxed; d=gmail.com; s=beta; h=domainkey-signature:received:received:message-id:date:from:to:subject:mime-version:content-type:content-transfer-encoding:content-disposition; b=tRHZ9LkPnsiCqaCqwUl+QVgMBBr0iHyweQtGOfd/dcg2Q9MO2ZfPFWAznFCH8tFerMIF3eibguUBuONnAVoIfuRtA2BGX72a/aoFL8IIlytl10cfbnBYgo+/jdYoYhtH9VUBOx81rsR26uzx/4bSK33bb7gtb3sbcwDwwnZSDsk= DomainKey-Signature: a=rsa-sha1; c=nofws; d=gmail.com; s=beta; h=received:message-id:date:from:to:subject:mime-version:content-type:content-transfer-encoding:content-disposition; b=sPRW+frissyv9H5/RXg5XoOr0CoGXhUJN+dp5+FMYJFyYOY+aZhZLzdN8Z+1yUMyqgdI6rn4JYvW721mUQXIqYMNSagMDlDrQ894xOQ2lBzKAkTG4DeqnMQ1BHVvCOJ1t19rzmNS368cGvvZsJVCqoWWeD1MR32NucCl5sJ5X9c= Received: by 10.82.185.12 with SMTP id i12mr11621949buf.1177449485982; Tue, 24 Apr 2007 14:18:05 -0700 (PDT) Received: by 10.82.141.19 with HTTP; Tue, 24 Apr 2007 14:18:05 -0700 (PDT) Message-ID: <6d7d37410704241418u16930bf9s7430ffa95bddb10c@mail.gmail.com> Date: Tue, 24 Apr 2007 23:18:05 +0200 From: "Bruce Harris" To: freebsd-sparc64@freebsd.org MIME-Version: 1.0 Content-Type: text/plain; charset=ISO-8859-1; format=flowed Content-Transfer-Encoding: quoted-printable Content-Disposition: inline Subject: Harddrives >128GiB X-BeenThere: freebsd-sparc64@freebsd.org X-Mailman-Version: 2.1.5 Precedence: list List-Id: Porting FreeBSD to the Sparc List-Unsubscribe: , List-Archive: List-Post: List-Help: List-Subscribe: , X-List-Received-Date: Tue, 24 Apr 2007 21:18:07 -0000 Does a SunBlade 100 support harddives with sizes >128 GiB? What I did wrong was that I created a directory called C0A80145 rather than a file, and put loader in it. It was when I browsed a man pag, saw something about /var/log/xferlog and checked that file that I realized my mistake. So now I've succeeded in getting the bootstrap to load on the Sparc. Here's my output. =3D=3D=3D 36e00 Consoles: Open Firmware console FreeBSD/sparc64 bootstrap loader, Revision 1.0 (root@s-dallas.cse.buffalo.edu, Fri Jan 12 08:25:13 UTC 2007) bootpath=3D"/pci@1f,0/network@c,1" boot: ethernet address: 00:03:ba:08:1c:11 net_open: server addr: 0.0.0.0 net_open: server path: / \ =3D=3D=3D Perhaps it's worth mentioning that I'm connecting over a serial link rather than using a keyboard and a screen, which means that I maybe miss some information. Generally, is it possible to do administer an installation over a serial link, until I can get an sshd up? So it seems I need to somehow tell the bootstrap where to connect. The problem is how... If they should given to the DHCP server, then I have a problem, since my router is pretty much a cheapo thing without advanced options. That's the (possible) problem I was referring to. (There seems to be a better interface than the web interface when telnetting to it, but I don't know how to use that interface properly.) I can also mention what I've done on the NFS side on the boot server. I've created /usr/sunboot, put all the files from the ISO image's /boot/ in that dir. I added this line to /etc/exports: /usr/sunboot -ro -maproot=3Droot -network 192.168.1.69 -mask 255.25= 5.255.0 which I then confirmed with showmount -e. So, what now? -----END 2ROT13 MESSAGE----- From owner-freebsd-sparc64@FreeBSD.ORG Wed Apr 25 01:25:02 2007 Return-Path: X-Original-To: freebsd-sparc64@freebsd.org Delivered-To: freebsd-sparc64@freebsd.org Received: from mx1.freebsd.org (mx1.freebsd.org [69.147.83.52]) by hub.freebsd.org (Postfix) with ESMTP id B679616A401 for ; Wed, 25 Apr 2007 01:25:02 +0000 (UTC) (envelope-from nitro2k01@gmail.com) Received: from mu-out-0910.google.com (mu-out-0910.google.com [209.85.134.190]) by mx1.freebsd.org (Postfix) with ESMTP id 3608A13C459 for ; Wed, 25 Apr 2007 01:25:01 +0000 (UTC) (envelope-from nitro2k01@gmail.com) Received: by mu-out-0910.google.com with SMTP id g7so54791muf for ; Tue, 24 Apr 2007 18:25:00 -0700 (PDT) DKIM-Signature: a=rsa-sha1; c=relaxed/relaxed; d=gmail.com; s=beta; h=domainkey-signature:received:received:message-id:date:from:sender:to:subject:in-reply-to:mime-version:content-type:content-transfer-encoding:content-disposition:references:x-google-sender-auth; b=G1nO8KQs2BGLboFcysaGMFQqTVxBqcDTiYjSzDFckJf0iFY/uyBata8RWGFYL03NmjWc/z+wjWsGhcYjC68igtWnFCU4lWY8w4WeDSvjrMStBiCst0x3ywoI7vsoxkq8FK7HcTbakXGYuqkZ5FaSYaan57yCAhxZmYQEMJfp2WE= DomainKey-Signature: a=rsa-sha1; c=nofws; d=gmail.com; s=beta; h=received:message-id:date:from:sender:to:subject:in-reply-to:mime-version:content-type:content-transfer-encoding:content-disposition:references:x-google-sender-auth; b=rn2j7HpYJKnRK90ioY9AVRXjQcOZxiHw9eQJjOtWmqWHrp8Bj7m9rweW+5gyTCP/nZj415F68/eTfsEpc8MXOR2gjxin2rEonMFNGf5YR2XdQgBtf2yKroQdH2DvpSlhe/o3Alfr5XjKtaYWBFDdfWGKg96M0JD+dT3DvXdgOWI= Received: by 10.82.184.2 with SMTP id h2mr70252buf.1177464300800; Tue, 24 Apr 2007 18:25:00 -0700 (PDT) Received: by 10.82.141.19 with HTTP; Tue, 24 Apr 2007 18:25:00 -0700 (PDT) Message-ID: <6d7d37410704241825v26f7d06ey402bf63ced54890a@mail.gmail.com> Date: Wed, 25 Apr 2007 03:25:00 +0200 From: "Didrik Madheden" Sender: nitro2k01@gmail.com To: "Miles Nordin" , freebsd-sparc64@freebsd.org In-Reply-To: MIME-Version: 1.0 Content-Type: text/plain; charset=ISO-8859-1; format=flowed Content-Transfer-Encoding: quoted-printable Content-Disposition: inline References: <6d7d37410704211612u712d29ebl4722232ce8d0111d@mail.gmail.com> <6d7d37410704211742p2340707cpf27fd280a2d0f353@mail.gmail.com> <6d7d37410704241621q1da5c653xec7ac0120783f660@mail.gmail.com> X-Google-Sender-Auth: 72ec67f7f74cc51d Cc: Subject: Re: Netbooting Sparc64 X-BeenThere: freebsd-sparc64@freebsd.org X-Mailman-Version: 2.1.5 Precedence: list List-Id: Porting FreeBSD to the Sparc List-Unsubscribe: , List-Archive: List-Post: List-Help: List-Subscribe: , X-List-Received-Date: Wed, 25 Apr 2007 01:25:02 -0000 Ok, second status report. As before, I've managed to get inital arp and tftp in order, to download the bootstrap. I managed to disable my router's dhcp server and activate dhcpd on my FBSD box. Here's what the sun box outputs: =3D=3D=3D 36e00 Consoles: Open Firmware console FreeBSD/sparc64 bootstrap loader, Revision 1.0 (root@s-dallas.cse.buffalo.edu, Fri Jan 12 08:25:13 UTC 2007) bootpath=3D"/pci@1f,0/network@c,1" boot: ethernet address: 00:03:ba:08:1c:11 net_open: server addr: 192.168.1.68 net_open: server path: /usr/sunboot panic: arp: no response for 0.0.0.0 --> Press a key on the console to reboot <-- Rebooting... Program terminated ok [prompt mode] =3D=3D=3D The part I'm curious about is "panic: arp: no response for 0.0.0.0". What am I missing? Perhaps it won't work to place the contents of the boot CD in /usr/sunboot, but that error seems to about something else. Relevant parts if my dhcpd.conf: =3D=3D=3D host sune.lan { fixed-address sune.lan; hardware ethernet 00:03:ba:08:1c:11; option root-path "192.168.1.68:/usr/sunboot"; } host alantis.lan { fixed-address 192.168.1.65; hardware ethernet 00:13:37:13:37:cc; # Yes, it's a custom MAC } host billy.lan { fixed-address 192.168.1.68; hardware ethernet 00:c0:4f:8a:68:a5; } =3D=3D=3D sune.lan is assigned to 192.168.1.69 in hosts and 0:3:ba:8:1c:11 in ethers. billy.lan is the server used for netboot. alantis.lan is just an innocent bystander. My exports has a single row: /usr/sunboot -ro -maproot=3Droot -network 192.168.1.69 -mask 255.25= 5.255.0 My rc.conf is the default configuration+what you adviced me to add. What you did looks right to me. I think /boot/loader ought to print out more things, such as it's own IP, subnet mask, and router, but I guess ours doesn't. 1. make sure you are specifying a subnet mask and a default router in your subnet stanza. Here's mine: subnet 10.100.100.192 netmask 255.255.255.224 { option routers 10.100.100.193; server-identifier 10.100.100.193; option subnet-mask 255.255.255.224; option broadcast-address 10.100.100.223; } 2. if that doesn't work, add a 'next-server 192.168.1.68' to sune.lan's host stanza. It shouldn't be needed---next-server is for TFTP, not NFS. but, I know /boot/loader will try to load the rest of itself and the kernel over either TFTP or NFS (using NFS seems more self-documenting to me), so maybe it's panicing on the TFTP part because of a wrong exception path, instead of falling through to the NFS part. --pgp-sign-Multipart_Wed_Apr_25_12:45:46_2007-1 Content-Type: application/pgp-signature Content-Transfer-Encoding: 7bit -----BEGIN PGP SIGNATURE----- Version: GnuPG v1.4.2 (NetBSD) iQCVAwUARi+Fw4nCBbTaW/4dAQLf8AQAseHToNOjI0Cgu8e0hcNZv/0VsUzQH1NN dtJ4fDeKr3p1304bkY3RZpNxpJwUMjaoyWRPRMUUIT82w8u+3xASdI/gCATOKZMl b8qfoY57f90OiZh8PqcPGSLRe7um7HTp4oSarl07IPwPRzybQMYPb1M6VvXT4Jni 0mGTshrQoRM= =cQQl -----END PGP SIGNATURE----- --pgp-sign-Multipart_Wed_Apr_25_12:45:46_2007-1-- From owner-freebsd-sparc64@FreeBSD.ORG Fri Apr 27 13:45:58 2007 Return-Path: X-Original-To: freebsd-sparc64@freebsd.org Delivered-To: freebsd-sparc64@freebsd.org Received: from mx1.freebsd.org (mx1.freebsd.org [69.147.83.52]) by hub.freebsd.org (Postfix) with ESMTP id 1EC4216A400 for ; Fri, 27 Apr 2007 13:45:58 +0000 (UTC) (envelope-from nitro2k01@gmail.com) Received: from ug-out-1314.google.com (ug-out-1314.google.com [66.249.92.172]) by mx1.freebsd.org (Postfix) with ESMTP id A820313C448 for ; Fri, 27 Apr 2007 13:45:57 +0000 (UTC) (envelope-from nitro2k01@gmail.com) Received: by ug-out-1314.google.com with SMTP id 71so709213ugh for ; Fri, 27 Apr 2007 06:45:56 -0700 (PDT) DKIM-Signature: a=rsa-sha1; c=relaxed/relaxed; d=gmail.com; s=beta; h=domainkey-signature:received:received:message-id:date:from:sender:to:subject:cc:in-reply-to:mime-version:content-type:content-transfer-encoding:content-disposition:references:x-google-sender-auth; b=NRqSA8mH9+3KdttMxhtQbxZ1thQ6NKpZJDAuBUI5aZzL20SjstgjspGhmATXdhlYp04+hNg0IIpItT1UyTqz+CuT7p0xydgUgS9NKvqX7D9f2Myty+gxd0nC8VcotApXnxDjdXArmLKPBC+vlWDqqrdK4d6Eq940MhYmGXmKvN8= DomainKey-Signature: a=rsa-sha1; c=nofws; d=gmail.com; s=beta; h=received:message-id:date:from:sender:to:subject:cc:in-reply-to:mime-version:content-type:content-transfer-encoding:content-disposition:references:x-google-sender-auth; b=aXBm5jRFFh01XhmCslwAiXw9aSVXamrh1sGtNSrS93YG67lqc+rRSrZUcxO+vpkAdBX/S+3kDtnfsKM6NuEO6NdxPoSKiaFiO5b8huTevUsTw+dt8G+bStqW913eXzD8vK9NH4ZPafRJG5GMNoTN4mgga13FHA6Oyo9fQKKrQ+4= Received: by 10.82.113.6 with SMTP id l6mr5792661buc.1177681555483; Fri, 27 Apr 2007 06:45:55 -0700 (PDT) Received: by 10.82.141.19 with HTTP; Fri, 27 Apr 2007 06:45:55 -0700 (PDT) Message-ID: <6d7d37410704270645n33314646m78f50901c098bde0@mail.gmail.com> Date: Fri, 27 Apr 2007 15:45:55 +0200 From: "Didrik Madheden" Sender: nitro2k01@gmail.com To: "Miles Nordin" In-Reply-To: MIME-Version: 1.0 Content-Type: text/plain; charset=ISO-8859-1; format=flowed Content-Transfer-Encoding: quoted-printable Content-Disposition: inline References: <6d7d37410704211612u712d29ebl4722232ce8d0111d@mail.gmail.com> <6d7d37410704211742p2340707cpf27fd280a2d0f353@mail.gmail.com> <6d7d37410704241621q1da5c653xec7ac0120783f660@mail.gmail.com> <6d7d37410704241825v26f7d06ey402bf63ced54890a@mail.gmail.com> X-Google-Sender-Auth: 4d8794d93690043b Cc: freebsd-sparc64@freebsd.org Subject: Re: Netbooting Sparc64 X-BeenThere: freebsd-sparc64@freebsd.org X-Mailman-Version: 2.1.5 Precedence: list List-Id: Porting FreeBSD to the Sparc List-Unsubscribe: , List-Archive: List-Post: List-Help: List-Subscribe: , X-List-Received-Date: Fri, 27 Apr 2007 13:45:58 -0000 So, here's another report. As far as I can tell, I've now managed to configure raepd, tftp and dhcpd correctly. My last problem seems to be NFS. I've managed to get to the loader prompt (As opposed to the OPB prompt) It actually lets me load a kernel over tftp, but appearantly I had to begin the file path with / for load but not for more. ("more text.txt" works, but I needed to write "load /kernel" rather than "load kernel", which took a while to understand.) So, after the kernel has loaded, I'm stuck at this prompt: =3D=3D=3D ... nfs_diskless: no NFS handle Manual root filesystem specification: : Mount using filesystem eg. ufs:/dev/da0a ? List valid disk boot devices Abort manual input mountroot> panic: Root mount failed, startup aborted. cpuid =3D 0 Uptime: 18m15s Cannot dump. No dump device defined. Automatic reboot in 15 seconds - press a key on the console to abort =3D=3D=3D The last lines is what happens if I just enter an empty line. I've tried different configurations for NFS, but none of them seems to give even the slightest indication that NFS is working. Right now, this line is my exports file: / -alldirs -maproot=3D0 -network 192.168.1.69 -mask 255.255.255.0 I know it's wrong to give root RW access to my whole file system, but I'm in a "chmod 777" mood right now. (And I'm firewalled and not expecting intruders) This is my rc.conf: =3D=3D=3D font8x14=3D"NO" font8x16=3D"NO" font8x8=3D"NO" hostname=3D"billy.lan" ifconfig_xl0=3D"DHCP" inetd_enable=3D"YES" keymap=3D"swedish.iso" keyrate=3D"fast" linux_enable=3D"YES" nfs_server_enable=3D"YES" rpcbind_enable=3D"YES" mountd_flags=3D"-r" mountd_enable=3D"YES" saver=3D"fire" sshd_enable=3D"YES" usbd_enable=3D"YES" rpc_statd_enable=3D"YES" rpc_lockd_enable=3D"YES" =3D=3D=3D Do I need an inetd.conf entry for NFS perhaps? I'm feeling frustration. (I'm getting the feeling that if I'd try to boot from cdrom now, it'd work just fine, just to give irony a chance to spit me in the face) I also saw this message in the boot log: >atapci0: using PIO transfers above 137GB as workaround for 48bit DMA acces= s bug > expect reduced performance This may be a problem since my disk is 400 GB big. Is this bug FBSD specific? I tried both using another drive and burning a new CD, but not in combination AFAICR. It seems as if the drive will actually succeed in booting every 5 times or so. Then my next problem was that I couldn't connect to the FTP sites to start the installation. This probably had to do with port forwarding, which I fixed, but if so it's strange that not even passive ftp worked. It also seemed that the netwrok interface was killed whenever the FTP connection failed so I had to reconnect. (Could no longer resolve host names, and stopped answering ping.) But now I think I got it right, and a netinstall is rolling. With my luck, the installation will probably abort for no reason just when the boot setting are about to be written to the HD, so I have to do everything allover. Then I'll probably find out that my newly bought HD has physical errors. Maybe I'll try on netbooting sometime again when I feel more confident. The bright side of it of course that I have learnt some things about my system. One last question remains though, about my hard drive. I'll just copy it from my last mail. Is this bug FBSD specific? Is there a workaround for using DMA without bugs? /Didrik Madheden On 4/28/07, Miles Nordin wrote: > >>>>> "dm" =3D=3D Didrik Madheden writes: > > dm> It actually lets me load a kernel over tftp, > > yes, you can do that, but you should load the kernel over NFS instead. > > dm> but appearantly I had to begin the file path with / for load > dm> but not for more. > > annoying. > > Is there working reverse-lookup for your client on the NFS server (DNS > or in /etc/hosts)? > > What does 'rpcinfo -s' on the server say? > > -----BEGIN 2ROT13 MESSAGE----- Low Bitrate Netlabel: Electronic music forum: S=E4tt p=E5 ett par flipflops, vippa p=E5 rumpan och g=F6r det h=E4r till en minnesv=E4rd sommar! -----END 2ROT13 MESSAGE----- From owner-freebsd-sparc64@FreeBSD.ORG Sat Apr 28 15:33:17 2007 Return-Path: X-Original-To: freebsd-sparc64@freebsd.org Delivered-To: freebsd-sparc64@freebsd.org Received: from mx1.freebsd.org (mx1.freebsd.org [69.147.83.52]) by hub.freebsd.org (Postfix) with ESMTP id 9696616A401 for ; Sat, 28 Apr 2007 15:33:17 +0000 (UTC) (envelope-from carton@Ivy.NET) Received: from sakima.Ivy.NET (sakima.Ivy.NET [69.31.131.60]) by mx1.freebsd.org (Postfix) with ESMTP id 4B9B413C44B for ; Sat, 28 Apr 2007 15:33:17 +0000 (UTC) (envelope-from carton@Ivy.NET) Received: from castrovalva.Ivy.NET (castrovalva.Ivy.NET [69.31.131.61]) (using TLSv1 with cipher DHE-RSA-AES256-SHA (256/256 bits)) (No client certificate requested) by sakima.Ivy.NET (Postfix) with ESMTP id 75F272FF68 for ; Sat, 28 Apr 2007 11:33:16 -0400 (EDT) Received: by castrovalva.Ivy.NET (Postfix, from userid 405) id F41C712FE28; Sat, 28 Apr 2007 11:33:15 -0400 (EDT) To: freebsd-sparc64@freebsd.org References: <6d7d37410704280814i1eb053b6x281b714f9a4c3d09@mail.gmail.com> From: Miles Nordin MIME-Version: 1.0 (generated by SEMI 1.14.6 - "Maruoka") Content-Type: multipart/signed; boundary="pgp-sign-Multipart_Sat_Apr_28_11:32:33_2007-1"; micalg=pgp-sha1; protocol="application/pgp-signature" Content-Transfer-Encoding: 7bit Date: Sat, 28 Apr 2007 11:33:15 -0400 In-Reply-To: <6d7d37410704280814i1eb053b6x281b714f9a4c3d09@mail.gmail.com> (Didrik Madheden's message of "Sat, 28 Apr 2007 17:14:21 +0200") Message-ID: User-Agent: T-gnus/6.17.2 (based on No Gnus v0.2) SEMI/1.14.6 (Maruoka) FLIM/1.14.7 (=?ISO-8859-4?Q?Sanj=F2?=) APEL/10.6 Emacs/21.4 (alpha--netbsd) MULE/5.0 (SAKAKI) Subject: Re: Netbooting Sparc64+HD question (Boot problems resolved without netboot) X-BeenThere: freebsd-sparc64@freebsd.org X-Mailman-Version: 2.1.5 Precedence: list List-Id: Porting FreeBSD to the Sparc List-Unsubscribe: , List-Archive: List-Post: List-Help: List-Subscribe: , X-List-Received-Date: Sat, 28 Apr 2007 15:33:17 -0000 --pgp-sign-Multipart_Sat_Apr_28_11:32:33_2007-1 Content-Type: text/plain; charset=US-ASCII >>>>> "dm" == Didrik Madheden writes: dm> Maybe I'll try on netbooting sometime again when I feel more dm> confident. yeah, I still don't know what was wrong. I guess I would try tcpdump next. >> atapci0: using PIO transfers above 137GB as workaround for >> 48bit DMA access bug expect reduced performance this is a hardware bug on the Ultra 5/10 that's CMD/Silicon Image's fault. Sun never added a workaround to their driver---they just refuse to ship the machines with >80GB. I didn't know the SunBlade 100 had the bug, too. In theory, it means exactly what it says. In practice, I've found IDE on Ultra 5/10 is so crappy and such a time-sink that I avoid it like the plague. On FreeBSD/NetBSD I use SCSI or netbooting, and on Solaris I use SCSI, FireWire with Oxford 911 firewire cases only, and the iSCSI initiator to IDE targets in i386 boxes. Each of those has its own problems. (respectively: expense, expense and smartctl doesn't work, and kernel panics when you unplug the network cable.) In general I've had so many small problems with IDE on not-i386: I have some PCI card that will work at Ultra100 speed in NetBSD/i386, but in NetBSD/macppc it only works at Ultra33. Some cards don't work right unless the chip is initialized by their secret proprietary PeeCee BIOS. The problems never get fixed or explained. I don't know if there is something about the chips that assumes i386 or what. Reliable storage on noti386 has been a major frustration for me, so I guess you'll have to try it and see. good luck. :/ --pgp-sign-Multipart_Sat_Apr_28_11:32:33_2007-1 Content-Type: application/pgp-signature Content-Transfer-Encoding: 7bit -----BEGIN PGP SIGNATURE----- Version: GnuPG v1.4.2 (NetBSD) iQCVAwUARjNpO4nCBbTaW/4dAQLgkwP/SxgbKYIIPiUoAaMQzBqKuuJ4hhCdUY7e 1L8JqLZ9gq5sDUCRyGRUOreLOSefH8wO8eygJcH7jvDuOhySWBXJYzgrhpocBMAP B2jHT/pOE77VlVy5BbJDrCjIekYuFp5qYpY6ogP8b8sFZ00hHo19/Eo5pgsL9NTp S8PaUhttYZk= =MrCK -----END PGP SIGNATURE----- --pgp-sign-Multipart_Sat_Apr_28_11:32:33_2007-1--
