Some Nikon cameras had the option to select the USB transfer mode betweek PTP and mass storage. On mine (Coolpix 4600) it is located under Setup->Interface->USB-> and then Select PTP or "Mass storage" Regards, Niki Denev From owner-freebsd-usb@FreeBSD.ORG Sun Jan 14 17:28:26 2007 Return-Path: X-Original-To: freebsd-usb@freebsd.org Delivered-To: freebsd-usb@freebsd.org Received: from mx1.freebsd.org (mx1.freebsd.org [69.147.83.52]) by hub.freebsd.org (Postfix) with ESMTP id 388B516A412; Sun, 14 Jan 2007 17:28:26 +0000 (UTC) (envelope-from imp@bsdimp.com) Received: from harmony.bsdimp.com (vc4-2-0-87.dsl.netrack.net [199.45.160.85]) by mx1.freebsd.org (Postfix) with ESMTP id ED90F13C455; Sun, 14 Jan 2007 17:28:25 +0000 (UTC) (envelope-from imp@bsdimp.com) Received: from localhost (localhost [127.0.0.1]) by harmony.bsdimp.com (8.13.4/8.13.4) with ESMTP id l0EHQLLH023081; Sun, 14 Jan 2007 10:26:21 -0700 (MST) (envelope-from imp@bsdimp.com) Date: Sun, 14 Jan 2007 10:26:39 -0700 (MST) Message-Id: <20070114.102639.-2023412433.imp@bsdimp.com> To: andy@neu.net From: "M. The original manufacturer ist Option N.V. and not Vodafone. Also vendor ID 0x0af0 and product ID 0x5000 is already in the tree, so these patches are now obsolete. PR kern/106033 contains some overlapping patches see http://www.freebsd.org/cgi/query-pr.cgi?pr=106033 BTW, could please one of the commiters have a look at PR 106033 and commit it? May I bother you with usb/106435 again. This PR fixes the issue with ums packet length in the debug code: it was wrongly assumed that packet will be 6 bytes long at each time. But since memory for the buffer is allocated with the reported length and not with the constant '6', then there is a potential buffer overflow. The fix is simple and will not harm anything. I just happen to have spent some time on the USB stack trying to put together support for some webcams i have. Apart from the details on this specific work, which i started summarising at http://info.iet.unipi.it/~luigi/FreeBSD/usb-cameras.html there are a few things that i would like to say/ask: 1. Migration strategy to the new usb stack One of the reasons to move to the new usb stack that Hans mentions above, is the lack of high speed isochronous support in the 'old' usb stack (i.e. the one in HEAD and RELENG_6 and below) I am particularly concerned about because it has to do with camera support. One issue with the new stack, however, is the different kernel API which is not backward compatible, and, as i discussed with Hans at length, this could be a significant obstacle to its adoption as it basically cuts support for third party drivers. The obvious solution to this problem is building an emulation layer on top of the new stack to offer a backward compatible API to old style drivers. This would serve both as a tool to support re-building of old-style drivers, and as an indirect source of documentation for adapting drivers to the new style. Building this emulation layer poses some difficulties, but in a relatively long phone call with Hans tonight we probably came up with a reasonable plan to solve the locking issues that existed in his previous implementation of the compatibility layer (removed some time ago because of these locking issues, you can see some detail in perforce http://perforce.freebsd.org/changeView.cgi?CH=107765 ). I hope Hans will follow up with more details, but i am confident that this approach will provide us with a suitable upgrade path that does not cost us regressions. 2. Linux compatibility layer. The discussion, as well as my recent work on webcams and other work from Raaf on DVB drivers (see http://raaf.atspace.org/dvbusb/index.html; and Raaf is in Bcc so he may comment if he likes) raised another issue, namely a linux compatibility layer. The linux community has developed a relatively large set of drivers for USB devices, for many sort of devices which we do not support at the moment e.g. webcams, DVB receivers, even 802.11 cards. Because a lot of these driver are built by reverse-engineering, the code tends to be on the obfuscated side, and doing a 'clueful' rewrite is typically not a viable option unless one has plenty of time to dedicate to the task. What one ends up doing is, instead, is a mechanical conversion, #ifdef'ing out the glue module and device hooks that gets replaced with FreeBSD equivalents, and then trying to translate the linux kernel API into more-or-less equivalent FreeBSD code. As i said this is a mechanical conversion, and it would be a tremendous help to have a linux-compatibility layer (library + macros) to support this work at least partially. More than comments like "yeah it would be great" i am wondering if there is any work around already done on this area. Surely people who ported linux drivers to FreeBSD have some clue, and maybe their set of macros/working notes used in the process. I have done something like this myself. I would be grateful if people interested in this could provide their input and/or contact me so we can hopefully set up a small project to implement such a compatibility layer. Part of it is generic, e.g. the module glue, the basic kernel services such as *malloc(), printk() and so on; part of it is usb-specific e.g. providing an emulation of linux mechanism for using the usb subsystems, e.g. urb's and so on. Finally, part of it could be related to the network subsystem as a number of devices we might be interested in are the various 802.11 USB dongles, none of them is currently supported on FreeBSD. Feedback welcome cheers luigi From owner-freebsd-usb@FreeBSD.ORG Wed Jan 17 09:32:00 2007 Return-Path: X-Original-To: freebsd-usb@FreeBSD.org Delivered-To: freebsd-usb@FreeBSD.org Received: from mx1.freebsd.org (mx1.freebsd.org [69.147.83.52]) by hub.freebsd.org (Postfix) with ESMTP id 1327016A417 for ; Wed, 17 Jan 2007 09:32:00 +0000 (UTC) (envelope-from rea-fbsd@codelabs.ru) Received: from pobox.codelabs.ru (pobox.codelabs.ru [144.206.177.45]) by mx1.freebsd.org (Postfix) with ESMTP id C693713C428 for ; Wed, 17 Jan 2007 09:31:59 +0000 (UTC) (envelope-from rea-fbsd@codelabs.ru) Received: from codelabs.ru (pobox.codelabs.ru [144.206.177.45]) by pobox.codelabs.ru with esmtpsa (TLSv1:AES256-SHA:256) id 1H779B-0002H5-G1; Wed, 17 Jan 2007 12:31:57 +0300 Date: Wed, 17 Jan 2007 12:31:53 +0300 From: Eygene Ryabinkin To: Florent Thoumie Message-ID: <20070117093152.GM3235@codelabs.ru> References: <200611112354.kABNstwC081945@freefall.freebsd.org> MIME-Version: 1.0 Content-Type: text/plain; charset=koi8-r Content-Disposition: inline In-Reply-To: <200611112354.kABNstwC081945@freefall.freebsd.org> Sender: rea-fbsd@codelabs.ru X-Spam-Status: No, score=-2.2 required=4.0 tests=ALL_TRUSTED,AWL,BAYES_50 Cc: freebsd-usb@FreeBSD.org Subject: Re: usb/104704: Add Xerox WorkCentre M15 to the list of unidirectional USB printers X-BeenThere: freebsd-usb@freebsd.org X-Mailman-Version: 2.1.5 Precedence: list List-Id: FreeBSD support for USB List-Unsubscribe: , List-Archive: List-Post: List-Help: List-Subscribe: , X-List-Received-Date: Wed, 17 Jan 2007 09:32:00 -0000 Florent, good day! The device seems to be detected alright but i am experiencing the same problems as reported by Hannes Hauswedell in this bug report - usb/104352: [ural] ural driver doesnt work - http://www.freebsd.org/cgi/query-pr.cgi?pr=104352&cat=usb. I was wondering if there have been any recent development with regards to this issue or if there are any current workarounds. The 0x705a is not the same as the 0x7050. "ural" supports the 0x7050. 0x705a uses a newer chip (the 2573) which is very similiar to the rt2661 for which FreeBSD has cardbus support. I've been debating taking the time to break ural out into two parts (like ral) to support the two different chips. As far as I can tell documentation is not forthcoming, but the Linux driver contains all the necessary register settings. Alternatively, If someone else wants to work on it, I would be happy to help. -Kip On 1/18/07, Shalom Bhooshi wrote: > Hi there, > > I've recently purchased a belkin usb 54g adapter (f5d7050) which uses the > ralink chipset (ural0 module). I've seen a similar patch for NetBSD, but yesterday I tried a similar NIC (vid 0x0a46, pid 0x8515) and after patching if_aue for this vid/pid, the driver fails to initialize with MII read timeout problems. If it's really an ADMtek 8515 chipset, it will be detected but it might not work or adapters using the same chip differ in behavior. As I've googled for some hours I figured out the same problems have been experienced by some Linux users and a patch for initialising the card and getting the MAC address was needed. The datasheet for this chip (and other ADMtek chips) is available at http://www.infineon.com. The original website of admtek is obsolete (even finding the datasheet has been difficult). You may download a package from the website of Bernd Walter: http://www.cosmo-project.de/~bernd/usbutil.tgz However, I don't why such a great tool isn't part of the ports tree (obsd + nbsd do have it in the tree). usbctl shows the interfaces and endpoints of a usb device. You may find a sample output of usbctl at http://bsd.vwsoft.com/3g/merlin_u740.html I would like to see the same output for the Huawei devices. I guess they have different interfaces and the first driver attaching to _and_ interface wins the whole device as the driver might return with UMATCH_DEVCLASS*, UMATCH_VENDOR* or similar. ''ums_open'' appears when you cat the usm1, but nothing else on mouse move or click. The other wired mouse ( also an Intellimouse ) giving a copius amount of data though.
