I'm using the experimental Xorg git ports tree on both and I'm not sure if that's a factor, which is why I'm CC-ing x11@. In short, qt will install happily the first time but not the second. It looks to my untrained eye like building [an upgraded] qt when qt is already installed somehow taints the build. The build will complete successfully, but it will fail during the install step whether or not the old qt was uninstalled between the make and install steps--I tried an install without uninstalling the old one using FORCE_PKG_REGISTER and it failed differently, but it still failed. However, if qt and qmake are removed completely before starting the [new] build for qt, it will install just fine. I'd like to determine if 1) this is a known problem and 2) this is specific to the Xorg ports tree so I know whether or not to send in a PR. Thanks! I forgot to mention this was during an attempt to update qt from qt-copy-3.3.8 to qt-copy-3.3.8_1 on a 7-CURRENT (as of several days ago) box. I also saw the problem on a previous qt upgrade on a machine running 6-STABLE several weeks ago. If I go to a virtual terminal, and kill java: 70143 ?? S 226:45.23 /usr/local/jdk1.5.0/bin/java -jar /usr/local/share/java/classes which is running jbidwatcher, and then xdm: 70104 ?? Ss 25:46.37 /usr/X11R6/bin/X -auth /usr/X11R6/lib/X11/xdm/authdir/authfiles then things are fine - getty notices that xdm is gone, and it gets restarted, I log in and everything is good. If I do not kill those from a virtual terminal, then I have to power cycle the machine, because X does not respond. I have no keyboard or mouse (that I can tell), CTL+ALT+Fx does not do anything, etc. Any suggestions? There is nothing suspicious in the Xorg log file, and the primary manifistation that anything is wrong is that moving from virtual desktops (I use a 2x2 under fvwm2) is slow to redraw the desktop. "top" reports that I have aroud 1GB available memory, so that is not the problem, but it sure seems like Xorg is thrashing. And why it seems to depend on jbidwatcher is also a mystery. jdk info: jdk-1.5.0p3_6 Java Development Kit 1.5.0 Bruce -- ------------------------------------------------------------------------ "I like bad!" Could you please visit http://people.freebsd.org/~fenner/portsurvey/x11@freebsd.org.html and correct the problems listed there? The individual port with a problem is x11-servers/xorg-server-snap. If you have already corrected the problems and submitted a PR, please accept my thanks and apologies for the delay in getting the fixes into the tree. This reminder is created automatically and does not (yet) have a way to know if a PR fixing the problem has been submitted. Please do *NOT* send your response to me directly; I do not necessarily have time to commit your fix; please instead submit a PR via 'send-pr' so it doesn't get lost. Problems are usually of two types: 1. The software package has been upgraded and the version in the port has been removed. The best solution to this problem is to upgrade the port to the most current version of the software package. If you are a FreeBSD committer, then you can just upgrade the port directly. If not, you should create the updated port on your own machine, test it (and maybe even run "portlint" on it), and then use "send-pr" to submit a "diff -uNr old-port updated-port". If you added or deleted any files, please make an explicit note of it. 2. The mirror site being used no longer contains the software package in question, or no longer exists. Solutions include: a) If there are other mirror sites, just remove the bad site from the list. (Make sure that what appears to be a bad site isn't actually a problem of type 1, upgrade) b) If the README or other support files in the software documentation mention where to get the software package, use one of those sites. c) Use a search engine to find another place to get the original DISTFILES. Make sure that you don't pick a FreeBSD distfiles mirror -- if you can't find any other places where the file exists, it can be a LOCAL_PORT or you can simply comment out the MASTER_SITES= line, with a comment explaining why. Once you have a solution, use "send-pr" to submit a "diff -u" of the Makefile. Note that this isn't an urgent issue, as people who try to build the port now will just fall back to the FreeBSD distfiles mirror. Please just put it on your list to do and get to it when you have time. These messages will continue to arrive twice a month until the fix is committed, as a reminder. Thanks, Bill "distfiles" Fenner.
