I was wondering which is the best to use for the "Rendering platform" option in Beryl. I have the choice of 1) Automatic, 2) Force Nvidia, 3) Force AIGLX and 4) Force XGL. I am wondering which would be the best to use? I noticed when I have it on Automatic that I cannot run other OpenGL apps while Beryl is running as it just forces me to kill X11 (the screen turns black and the computer becomes very unresponsive). However, you might want to try fixing your Nvidia driver install before using Beryl. First, you must make sure X.org can see your Nvidia GLX modules. By default, they are installed in a different location than where X.org installs them. Assuming your X.org is install to /usr/local, you can fix it by: prompt# ln -s /usr/local/lib/modules/extensions/libglx.so.1 /usr/local/lib/xorg/modules/extensions/libglx.so.1 prompt# ln -s /usr/local/lib/modules/extensions/libglx.so.1 /usr/local/lib/xorg/modules/extensions/libglx.so Now, assuming you have graphics/mesa-demos installed, glxinfo will tell you that direct rendering is enabled. If you test Beryl at this point, it should partially work. On my machine, I get the effects but the window manager is messed up beyond belief. The only issue I had is that I cannot run other OpenGL-based apps while Beryl is running, I am not sure if this is isolated to FreeBSD or if it also affects others running Xorg 7.2/Nvidia driver/Beryl as well. I was just wondering if there was a way around it (i.e. running Beryl and OpenGL-based apps at the same time). Thanks. The only issue I had is that I cannot run other > OpenGL-based apps while Beryl is running, For what it's worth, I suspect that the conflict is between NVIDIA drivers with "composite enabled" and OpenGL rather than with Beryl and OpenGL. At least, that seems to be my experience. It introduces some helpful bugfixes and changes, builds cleanly on my system, and so far has run without noticeable problems, but it can cause problems when used to rebuild other ports, such as xorg-libraries, that are bundled with earlier and slightly incompatible versions of drm.h (and perhaps some other files as well). bf ____________________________________________________________________________________ No need to miss a message. It should "just work" using the defaults. I have no experience with that specific monitor but have have run the earlier series Samsung SyncMaster which are limited to 1280x1024 native resolution (ie not widescreen), but I do run widescreen 1680x1050 on an asus L4 series notebook which 15.4" screen and OEM ATI Mobility 9700. > Section "Monitor" > #DisplaySize 470 300 # mm > Identifier "Monitor0" > VendorName "SAM" > ModelName "SyncMaster" > ModeLine "1680x1050" 119.0 1680 1728 1760 1840 1050 1053 > 1059 1080 > ### Comment all HorizSync and VertSync values to use DDC: > HorizSync 30.0 - 81.0 > VertRefresh 56.0 - 75.0 As a first shot, comment out these two lines and let X determine the valid ranges, incorrect settings are probably causing valid modes to be discarded (discarded modes are logged in /var/log/Xorg.0.log which will be the first place to look when you're trying to resolve problems like this). > Option "DPMS" > EndSection > ~ > And a screen section with no mode settings but a bunch of color depths. You can try removing those as well unless you want to use Ctrl-Alt-+/- mode switching, X defaults are fairly sensible these days. When I try to login on aixa via XDMP-Protocol I can read on aixa (XDM) in a xconsole following: Apr 12 21:45:05 aixa xdm: pam_sm_close_session(): no utmp record for notebook:0 On notebook I see the login-screen, I type my login and password, the login-screen disappears and appears again. It seems that the login failed! It seems for me a problem with the pam-module but I have no idea... Maybe somebody out there? You should not need to specify HorizSync or VertRefresh. FYI here is my conf: Section "Monitor" Identifier "HomeTFTMon" ModeLine "1680x1050" 146.0 1680 1784 1960 2240 1050 1053 1059 1089 EndSection Section "Screen" Identifier "HomeTFT" Device "Card1" Monitor "HomeTFTMon" SubSection "Display" Depth 32 Modes "1680x1050" EndSubSection EndSection =20 (The entire conf is a little more complex, dual head on a laptop..) The relevant section of the handbook is 5.4.3.2 'Adding a Widescreen Flatpanel to the mix' [1]. To get the values for the modeline, check in your /var/log/Xorg.0.log . Before this happens, we have to make sure there are no collateral damages made to innocent ports. I'd like people to come to #freebsd-xorg on EFNet this week-end and coordinate to review this diff [1], so that we don't duplicate the effort more than once. So come, pick a category (say games), say you're going to review it on the channel, then have fun. Obviously you can do that for more than one category. Most of the changes made to existing ports (besides xorg itself and mesa) should be pretty straight-forward like fixing plist issues due to prefix merge, setting USE_GL when it's not, ... so it shouldn't take that long, assuming I'm not alone with miwi. One of the main things we want to check for is that there are no unnecessary changes from e.g. mis-merges from CVS into the git repo, which would introduce regressions back into the CVS tree. Before further updating of your ports, you will need to merge stuff that you now have in old X11BASE (/usr/X11R6 by default) onto LOCALBASE (/usr/local by default). here's a suggestion how to do that: - make a tar backup of /usr/X11R6 - extract that backup onto /usr/local with option to not overwrite existing files - remove /usr/X11R6 - create symlink /usr/X11R6 -> /usr/local for compatibility (configuration files, /var/db/pkg package database, ...) The above instructions are available in form of shell script here: http://people.freebsd.org/~lesi/mergebase.sh Feel free to come up with better suggestions. What is now in this git tree (with the mentioned change) is pretty much what will go into ports tree. If anyone plans on testing the upgrade from xorg 6.9 to 7.2, "portupgrade -a" or similar should do the right thing (preferably after merging bases). Do tell us your experiences, suggestions,... Probably something using find -type f -o -type l and then comm(1) would be appropriate; the user should be warned about these conflicts and either bail out until they resolve them, or just proceed and let them deal with them by hand from the backup tarball. * There is also the possibility for directories to change permissions/ownership when they are spammed by tar. This is probably not important though. On the machine I have still running xorg 6.9, I see: rot13# cd /usr/X11R6; find . -type f -o -type l | sort > /tmp/x rot13# cd /usr/local; find . -type f -o -type l | sort > /tmp/l rot13# comm -1 -2 /tmp/l /tmp/x ./man/man3/Object.3.gz ./man/whatis ./share/applications/mimeinfo.cache ./share/gnome/applications/mimeinfo.cache ./share/mime/XMLnamespaces ./share/mime/aliases ./share/mime/globs ./share/mime/magic ./share/mime/mime.cache ./share/mime/subclasses I think most of these are OK (i.e. do not need to be resolved); maybe a whitelist of not-actually-conflicts would be useful to weed them out. The first one is a real conflict though: rot13# ls -l /usr/X11R6/man/man3/Object.3.gz /usr/local/man/man3/Object.3.gz -r--r--r-- 1 root wheel 1195 Sep 26 2006 /usr/X11R6/man/man3/Object.3.gz -r--r--r-- 1 root wheel 4850 Mar 29 15:41 /usr/local/man/man3/Object.3.gz rot13# pkg_which /usr/X11R6/man/man3/Object.3.gz /usr/local/man/man3/Object.3.gz [Updating the pkgdb in /var/db/pkg ... - 287 packages found (-0 +1) . done] open-motif-2.2.3_2 tcl-8.4.14_4,1 i.e. those ports now conflict when both in LOCALBASE.
