"For experienced users, you may want to minimize the amount of prompting that mergemaster can generate, especially when upgrading major revisions, or when an update has not been performed in some time. To automatically update files that have not been modified, use the '-U' option. To automatically include new files without prompting you to add them, include the '-i' option. Using 'mergemaster -U -i' will greatly speed up the process for users that do not make major changes to the files in '/etc', but at the expense of not being able to control every single modification that is made." These represent problem reports covering all versions including experimental development code and obsolete releases. Bugs can be in one of several states: o - open A problem report has been submitted, no sanity checking performed. a - analyzed The problem is understood and a solution is being sought. f - feedback Further work requires additional information from the originator or the community - possibly confirmation of the effectiveness of a proposed solution. p - patched A patch has been committed, but some issues (MFC and / or confirmation from originator) are still open. r - repocopy The resolution of the problem report is dependent on a repocopy operation within the CVS repository which is awaiting completion. s - suspended The problem is not being worked on, due to lack of information or resources. This is a prime candidate for somebody who is looking for a project to do. If the problem cannot be solved at all, it will be closed, rather than suspended. c - closed A problem report is closed when any changes have been integrated, documented, and tested -- or when fixing the problem is abandoned. Moreover, by default, there is no /etc/pf.conf, so if the user enables PF in /etc/defaults/rc.conf, the next reboot PF will complain about /etc/pf.conf not existing and will not load. I think the Handbook should clarify this for 7.0. As it does not have (nor their relatives) a manual entry, I wondered if I could submit one for it. I'm not very skilled on writing manual documentation, and I've never submitted anything to FreeBSD but a port, but I'd like to try. As I have access to a Linux machine that has this manual entry[2], I wondered if I could use it as a base (or maybe copying it). However, as I don't want to start a BSD-License vs GPL-license war, I just want to know if it's permitted importing (using as a base, copying, ... or other possibilities that do not come into my mind right now) manual files from other OSes to FreeBSD. Regards and thank you. PS Googling around, I've also seen that MacOSX has this manual entry[3], but it's not as good as [2]. Being MacOSX BSD-based, is the situation better to import it? If we were to add it to the base the following responses would apply. As it stands, the author could choose to include a GPL or APSL licensed manpage, but doing so would not be a step toward getting the functionality into the base (perhaps in libutil). > As I have access to a Linux machine that has this manual entry[2], I > wondered if I could use it as a base (or maybe copying it). There's no chance we'd allow a GPL based manual for a non-GPL based function in the system. A valid ruleset script that would be equivalent to the ruleset file shown above would be following: #!/bin/sh ipfw -q flush ipfw add block in all ipfw add block out all which is not exactly true since flush is not performed in the first case. Also I could not find three things I personally worried about: - possibility to include comments/empty lines in the ruleset which happened to be really possible; - the preference of the first method in terms of performance in case of huge ruleset (ipfw is executed just once); - ability to produce ipfw output of the current ruleset compatible with its input (without the need of preprocessing). Why ever "add block out all" ? That's pf syntax, not ipfw's one. Looks like a bug. > which is not exactly true since flush is not performed in the first case. > Also I could not find three things I personally worried about: > - possibility to include comments/empty lines in the ruleset which > happened to be really possible; > - the preference of the first method in terms of performance in case > of huge ruleset (ipfw is executed just once); And possibility to include shell variables, etc. in script, so script can be more comfortable. > - ability to produce ipfw output of the current ruleset compatible > with its input (without the need of preprocessing). Why? Preprocessing is easy trick. Just do: # to save ruleset ipfw list > /etc/ruleset # to restore ipfw -p awk '{print "add " $0}' /etc/ruleset The same is applicable for not only rulesm but tables, etc. -- WBR, Vadim Goncharov. A lot of people are not aware that by default pkg_add fetches release packages, they believe they are getting updated ones. - Since you are discussing the init system and mention /usr/local/etc/rc.d: A quick explanation about the difference between the base system and the ports (possibly with a reference to another document or the handbook, so you would not have to expand this a lot). Also a mention that /etc/rc.d has the startup scripts for services in the base distribution and /usr/local/etc/rc.d for scripts in user-installed programs. Finding out what to write in /etc/rc.conf to enable a service confuses most beginners, a mention of the general rule _enable="YES" or the rcvar to find out the entry would be nice IMHO. A quick correction, in the same section, the example about apache22 is wrong, it should read: # /usr/local/etc/rc.d/apache22 start and # /etc/local/etc/rc.d/apache22 forcestart Manolis From owner-freebsd-doc@FreeBSD.ORG Thu Mar 6 23:21:11 2008 Return-Path: Delivered-To: freebsd-doc@hub.freebsd.org Received: from mx1.freebsd.org (mx1.freebsd.org [IPv6:2001:4f8:fff6::34]) by hub.freebsd.org (Postfix) with ESMTP id D49E51065675; Thu, 6 Mar 2008 23:21:11 +0000 (UTC) (envelope-from keramida@FreeBSD.org) Received: from freefall.freebsd.org (freefall.freebsd.org [IPv6:2001:4f8:fff6::28]) by mx1.freebsd.org (Postfix) with ESMTP id 934008FC1E; Thu, 6 Mar 2008 23:21:11 +0000 (UTC) (envelope-from keramida@FreeBSD.org) Received: from freefall.freebsd.org (keramida@localhost [127.0.0.1]) by freefall.freebsd.org (8.14.2/8.14.2) with ESMTP id m26NLBXA038583; Thu, 6 Mar 2008 23:21:11 GMT (envelope-from keramida@freefall.freebsd.org) Received: (from keramida@localhost) by freefall.freebsd.org (8.14.2/8.14.1/Submit) id m26NLBkZ038579; Thu, 6 Mar 2008 23:21:11 GMT (envelope-from keramida) Date: Thu, 6 Mar 2008 23:21:11 GMT Message-Id: <200803062321.m26NLBkZ038579@freefall.freebsd.org> To: keramida@FreeBSD.org, freebsd-doc@FreeBSD.org, keramida@FreeBSD.org From: keramida@FreeBSD.org Cc: Subject: Re: docs/121440: rc(8) and rcorder(8) unclear about PROVIDE keyword being mandatory X-BeenThere: freebsd-doc@freebsd.org X-Mailman-Version: 2.1.5 Precedence: list List-Id: Documentation project List-Unsubscribe: , List-Archive: List-Post: List-Help: List-Subscribe: , X-List-Received-Date: Thu, 06 Mar 2008 23:21:11 -0000 Synopsis: rc(8) and rcorder(8) unclear about PROVIDE keyword being mandatory Responsible-Changed-From-To: freebsd-doc->keramida Responsible-Changed-By: keramida Responsible-Changed-When: Thu Mar 6 23:20:33 UTC 2008 Responsible-Changed-Why: I was the one who requested that this is logged as a PR, so I would get a reminder to handle it, so assign it to me. http://www.freebsd.org/cgi/query-pr.cgi?pr=121440 From owner-freebsd-doc@FreeBSD.ORG Fri Mar 7 03:48:27 2008 Return-Path: Delivered-To: doc@FreeBSD.org Received: from mx1.freebsd.org (mx1.freebsd.org [IPv6:2001:4f8:fff6::34]) by hub.freebsd.org (Postfix) with ESMTP id C9F781065670 for ; Fri, 7 Mar 2008 03:48:27 +0000 (UTC) (envelope-from whizkid@eeoth.pair.com) Received: from eeoth.pair.com (eeoth.pair.com [209.68.1.179]) by mx1.freebsd.org (Postfix) with SMTP id 913178FC12 for ; Fri, 7 Mar 2008 03:48:27 +0000 (UTC) (envelope-from whizkid@eeoth.pair.com) Received: (qmail 6291 invoked by uid 3033); 7 Mar 2008 03:21:45 -0000 Date: Thu, 6 Mar 2008 21:21:45 -0600 From: "G. I did like the way things are explained there, just made a bit of an update as to now there are no conf files to be edited as the old text said. I would help more in the text (and other manuals from handbook) if needed. I just though I could not myself make a better text than the original, so I made a patch :) sorry if was much buzz for little thing. matheus -- We will call you cygnus, The God of balance you shall be From owner-freebsd-doc@FreeBSD.ORG Sat Mar 8 04:40:03 2008 Return-Path: Delivered-To: freebsd-doc@hub.freebsd.org Received: from mx1.freebsd.org (mx1.freebsd.org [IPv6:2001:4f8:fff6::34]) by hub.freebsd.org (Postfix) with ESMTP id BB0F2106566B for ; So, Fred vs Freda is correct, although I admit it's looks a little weird.
