I am trying to connect a Western Digital 1TB My Book Studio to my
FreeBSD 6.2-Stable box via Firewire 400 without much luck.

When I connect the drive via USB, it works just fine. When I connect
via Firewire 400, the drive is detected, but never becomes available
via da0. Below is the output with debug.firewire_debug=1. I have
connected other Firewire 400 devices to this machine without a
problem. I also updated the firmware on this drive to verify that is
not the cause of the problem.

I should note that this drive does not actually have any Firewire 400
ports on it, but instead came with a cable that is Firewire 800 on one
side (which connects to the drive), and Firewire 400 on the other. The
drive does support Firewire 400 though, and I have confirmed this by
connecting it to a Firewire 400 port on my Mac.

Can someone point me in the right direction to begin troubleshooting
this? I am actually considering buying a PCI Firewire 800 card for
this box so I can get more speed, but I want to make sure it will work
first.

Thanks,

-Steve

Is the Drive 400/800 compatible? If so, I'm looking into a speed
negotiation issue right now that may work for you.

Thanks. I think I know what the problem is, i.e. the sbp() driver is
using the MAX capable speed, not the negotiated speed.

I bet, if you plug your drive into a 800 port "it just works".

I'm going to order a Firewire 800 card right now, I'll try it out when
it gets here. I'll report my findings to the list.

Thanks for all your help. Again, let me know if you need anything.

Still no luck with the FW800 card in my machine and the drive
connected to it. Here are the errors, appears to be the same as before:

fwohci0: BUS reset

send phy_config root_node=0 gap_count=5
fwohci0: start AT DMA status=11
fwohci0: too many cycle lost, no cycle master presents?
node1: crom unchanged
fw_explore: node 2, err = 0
bus_explore done
sbp0:0:0 request timeout(mgm orb:0x010d34fc) ... reset start
firewire0: split transaction timeout dst=0xffc1 tl=0x1c state=3
sbp0:0:0 sbp_reset_start failed: resp=60

sbp0:0:0 request timeout(mgm orb:0x010d3634) ... reset start

Any ideas on how to clear this up?

It works just fine in Windows and on Mac. I haven't tried linux yet,
but if it comes down to it, I can probably find a live CD somewhere
and try it out.

Here is the output of 'fwcontrol -p'.

Thanks,

Is there anything I can do to help you out? I'd hate for you to go buy a drive just to help me get mine working.

Maybe this well give me a clue. Set a couple of sysctl variables and
then send me the output when connecting the hard drive:
debug.sbp_debug --> 1
debug.firewire_debug --> 1

Here is the output with the sysctl variables set. I'm at work right now, so I couldn't physically disconnect and reconnect, but I did issue a 'fwcontrol -r' to get this output. If you need an actual disconnect/reconnect, it'll have to wait a few hours.
