If the only reason for wanting an external box is the ability to power the drives down, you could make a custom power cable with a switch inline. There are panels with switches that fit standard 3.5" bays, so you don't have to do any metalwork, just a little soldering. If an additional SATA drive appears, does the FreeBSD kernel notice and handle it (like USB) ? Is a rescan needed (like SCSI) ? A reboot? >> I already have an external drive connected via USB, but I am not able to >> read SMART using this link. Another issue with the USB bridges is you can't turn the disk's write cache on and off. :-( Do firewire bridges allow access to the write cache control bit, and SMART data? How is FreeBSD support for firewire disks? > I did something similar with an Addonics 4-drive housing and a SiI 3124 based > SATA controller. I would think that SATA-300 could support 4 drives without slowing them down, is there some other bottleneck? With acpi disabled the adapter works but I have problems with other devices on the notebook like bluetooth which is on usb. Is there a way to disable acpi only for the lan adapter or may be a way to enable the adapter before detecting? The machine in question is running 6.2/amd64, if it makes a difference. I did some searching, but all the results I found were several years old and refer to cards that are not on the market anymore. (Both work well under FreeBSD, BTW.) The adapter I selected looked well made and worked pretty well in the target environment (not FreeBSD, but since it is built round a supported Atheros chip, I'm quite convinced that it will work). I paid some 12 EUR (incl. VAT). Guess that's about US$15 ... The board I bought was the TL-WN651G (with removable antenna), the TL-WN650G is identical with a non-removable antenna and less than 10% cheaper. I see that the Atheros drivers have a binary-only part, as described by ath_hal(4). Can you confirm that this works on amd64? Often vendors are lazy about writing drivers for anything but i386. :( Btw, the Atheros site you link to doesn't seem to work. All my searches yield a server error page. Very confidence-inspiring... There are amd64 binaries but as I don't have any ath(4) hardware, I can't comment on them. Sam has access to the Atheros documentation but is required to embed much of the code in a binary blob to comply with regulatory agency requirements. See /usr/src/sys/contrib/dev/ath/README >Btw, the Atheros site you link to doesn't seem to work. All my searches= =20 >yield a server error page. Very confidence-inspiring... My trial search worked without problem. If you believe there is a problem with the Atheros website, I suggest you take it up with Atheros - the FreeBSD Project does not manage it. --=20 Peter Jeremy Please excuse any delays as the result of my ISP's inability to implement an MTA that is either RFC2821-compliant or matches their claimed behaviour. --DwoPkXS38qd3dnhB Content-Type: application/pgp-signature Content-Disposition: inline -----BEGIN PGP SIGNATURE----- Version: GnuPG v2.0.4 (FreeBSD) iD8DBQFHkEMF/opHv/APuIcRAhFuAJ4gmHDP/BMTeu8av5TMvPyKl6PMUQCeNm/E WGbAdFMwylmPZ7/L45qYc2k= =UKeP -----END PGP SIGNATURE----- --DwoPkXS38qd3dnhB-- From owner-freebsd-hardware@FreeBSD.ORG Sat Jan 19 23:51:13 2008 Return-Path: Delivered-To: freebsd-hardware@freebsd.org Received: from mx1.freebsd.org (mx1.freebsd.org [IPv6:2001:4f8:fff6::34]) by hub.freebsd.org (Postfix) with ESMTP id 37F8D16A418 for ; Sat, 19 Jan 2008 23:51:13 +0000 (UTC) (envelope-from authentec@gmail.com) Received: from wx-out-0506.google.com (wx-out-0506.google.com [66.249.82.236]) by mx1.freebsd.org (Postfix) with ESMTP id AB78C13C4CC for ; Sat, 19 Jan 2008 23:51:12 +0000 (UTC) (envelope-from authentec@gmail.com) Received: by wx-out-0506.google.com with SMTP id i29so861020wxd.7 for ; Sat, 19 Jan 2008 15:51:11 -0800 (PST) DKIM-Signature: v=1; a=rsa-sha256; c=relaxed/relaxed; d=gmail.com; s=gamma; h=domainkey-signature:received:received:message-id:date:from:user-agent:mime-version:to:cc:subject:content-type:content-transfer-encoding; bh=P8j1El+S3MRdr9gLZxs7x7Jhk+kURbKMc5iZWhnaJsQ=; b=W3gS+QpkzDJa/SSeWtf2B94eS6BeeI3TQn3JlLjC2IeZsAH3mS9XG2O/OUsJnSuSy4lVeUkortDMazu7a71jJ7oXYtep0BvIEqTjDcuaJODQL3pS+1r2qfpN5BNg9F4/LHL269zmO6xKD4YgQTXcTjTgtr7/6vTFWonsPXWxoZk= DomainKey-Signature: a=rsa-sha1; c=nofws; d=gmail.com; s=gamma; h=message-id:date:from:user-agent:mime-version:to:cc:subject:content-type:content-transfer-encoding; b=xKLqjsaqigT8oAOMf3vHateZSVfm8sQvezHl3L68iNlm1RzR0pD9lNUvl08MEWROd7thY4PfWgaobOKOwmzzwlh6SAoHDbY7zkKTUChai3T2ep4iBqKZJPATntaKt0m1WEqw16wT+0E60mv9GKItBj+DUjZVNbc6UZIYdUPlNcM= Received: by 10.70.39.18 with SMTP id m18mr3294441wxm.50.1200784966206; Sat, 19 Jan 2008 15:22:46 -0800 (PST) Received: from Samson.home.net ( [69.177.150.191]) by mx.google.com with ESMTPS id i20sm18979180wxd.2.2008.01.19.15.22.44 (version=TLSv1/SSLv3 cipher=RC4-MD5); Sat, 19 Jan 2008 15:22:45 -0800 (PST) Message-ID: <47928642.2090707@gmail.com> Date: Sat, 19 Jan 2008 18:22:42 -0500 From: Greg Mars User-Agent: Thunderbird 2.0.0.9 (X11/20080104) MIME-Version: 1.0 To: freebsd-questions@freebsd.org Content-Type: text/plain; charset=ISO-8859-1; format=flowed Content-Transfer-Encoding: 7bit Cc: freebsd-hardware@freebsd.org Subject: Realtek 8111B LAN Chipset X-BeenThere: freebsd-hardware@freebsd.org X-Mailman-Version: 2.1.5 Precedence: list List-Id: General discussion of FreeBSD hardware List-Unsubscribe: , List-Archive: List-Post: List-Help: List-Subscribe: , X-List-Received-Date: Sat, 19 Jan 2008 23:51:13 -0000 I'm buying parts for a computer and want to make sure that the core components are as freebsd friendly as possible. So far, I've decided on a core 2 quad q6600 and I'm choosing the motherboard now. However it seems many of the popular motherboards have Realtek ALC888 as built-in audio and Realtek 8111B as built-in LAN. I read at: http://www.freebsd.org/relnotes/CURRENT/hardware/i386/article.html that the sound should work but I couldn't find any info on the LAN. Does anyone on the list have any experience with it? By the way, I'm going to run FreeBSD 7.
