This seems to stop md from loading. Disabling it fixed the problem and the CD boots normally :) -- Best regards, Peter mailto:darkmatter@blueyonder.co.uk From owner-freebsd-i386@FreeBSD.ORG Mon Mar 3 21:20:03 2008 Return-Path: Delivered-To: freebsd-i386@hub.freebsd.org Received: from mx1.freebsd.org (mx1.freebsd.org [IPv6:2001:4f8:fff6::34]) by hub.freebsd.org (Postfix) with ESMTP id 3127E1065676 for ; Mon, 3 Mar 2008 21:20:03 +0000 (UTC) (envelope-from gnats@FreeBSD.org) Received: from freefall.freebsd.org (freefall.freebsd.org [IPv6:2001:4f8:fff6::28]) by mx1.freebsd.org (Postfix) with ESMTP id 30F248FC3A for ; Mon, 3 Mar 2008 21:20:03 +0000 (UTC) (envelope-from gnats@FreeBSD.org) Received: from freefall.freebsd.org (gnats@localhost [127.0.0.1]) by freefall.freebsd.org (8.14.2/8.14.2) with ESMTP id m23LK2GI077487 for ; Mon, 3 Mar 2008 21:20:02 GMT (envelope-from gnats@freefall.freebsd.org) Received: (from gnats@localhost) by freefall.freebsd.org (8.14.2/8.14.1/Submit) id m23LK27l077486; Mon, 3 Mar 2008 21:20:02 GMT (envelope-from gnats) Date: Mon, 3 Mar 2008 21:20:02 GMT Message-Id: <200803032120.m23LK27l077486@freefall.freebsd.org> To: freebsd-i386@FreeBSD.org From: Peter Mulholland Cc: Subject: Re: i386/113160: [install] mountroot> prompt during first boot for installation X-BeenThere: freebsd-i386@freebsd.org X-Mailman-Version: 2.1.5 Precedence: list Reply-To: Peter Mulholland List-Id: I386-specific issues for FreeBSD List-Unsubscribe: , List-Archive: List-Post: List-Help: List-Subscribe: , X-List-Received-Date: Mon, 03 Mar 2008 21:20:03 -0000 The following reply was made to PR i386/113160; it has been noted by GNATS. The hardware is fine other than the BIOS not correctly handling large disks - to this end I have installed a Promise PDC20268 based card to handle the disk. Both CD images are verified correct - they function OK in another system I have tested them in, an Apple iMac. From=20the look of it, the md0 device is never being created, which of course leads the boot process to fail as that's where the root FS will be. There is no error message given though - just the absence of the creation of md0. Disconnecting the disk thats on the Promise controller makes no difference. I haven't tried removing the Promise controller but I don't see why that would be causing a problem anyway. So long as I stay in one TTY, and don't issue CTRL-ALT-F1-9 or try to load xdm, gdm, or kdm I am fine. If I do switch to another TTY (1-9) the keyboard and mouse lose power. If I move the USB keyboard and mouse to other port(s) they power up and whatever key I press next is repeated over and over again and then devices lose power again. Moving the devices to the other ports does nothing as no power is present on the ports any longer. If I load *dm I can use the keyboard momentarily and then power is lost and the charactors are repeated non stop. This happened in 6.3-Release and now in 7.0, I don't see any errors in the logs, any ideas? I suspected a hd failure or a compromised system. I took off the machine from public network to a private segment and it was running ok for one day. So I suspected a compromised system and I decided to upgrade to 7.0-RELEASE. I followed the guidelines in http://www.daemonology.net/blog/2007-11-11-freebsd-major-version-upgrade.html but after first reboot I had this problem : The Promise SuperTrak RAID controller is detected but it does not initialize : it writes this (typed manually, cannot boot) : pst0: pst0: 1430511MB [182364/255/63] on pstpci0 pstpci0: [THREAD] pst: timeout mfa=0x002a4dd0 cmd=0x01 pst: timeout mfa=0x002a5070 cmd=0x01 pst: timeout mfa=0x002a5310 cmd=0x01 pst: timeout mfa=0x002a5850 cmd=0x01 pst: timeout mfa=0x002a5af0 cmd=0x01 pst: timeout mfa=0x002a5d90 cmd=0x01 pst: timeout mfa=0x002a6030 cmd=0x01 pst: timeout mfa=0x002a62d0 cmd=0x01 pst: timeout mfa=0x002a6570 cmd=0x01 pst: timeout mfa=0x002a6810 cmd=0x01 pst: timeout mfa=0x002a6ab0 cmd=0x01 etc...etc... and never stops -> boot never finished During system startup the cntroller BIOS starts ok and displays the RAID as functional When I boot the system in "safe mode", the controller is detected and initialised and booting works fine. ----snip ad0: 286168MB at ata0-master PIO4 acd0: CDROM at ata1-slave PIO4 pst0: on pstpci0 pst0: 1430511MB [182364/255/63] on pstpci0 pstpci0: [ITHREAD] Trying to mount root from ufs:/dev/ad0s1a ----snip This is the workaround but I do not want to run a production server in safe mode.(why shouldnt I?)
