After migrating to the RELENG_7 branch, I was never able to successfully build after any csup updates. I noticed that parts of edited files were 'missing'. No syslog messages were observed. After deleting the truncated file and running csup again, the buildworld was mostly successful. Occasionaly I would have another truncated file, requiring deletion and running csup again. I remembered someting about 'write cache enable' sysctl default getting changed at the start of the RELENG_5 branch. After turning off the write cache, I had no further problems with building world after a csup of the source tree. It has been 4 weeks without any issues. I do a weekly csup and buildworld. My hard disk is a IBM Deskstar Model IC35L040AVVA07. DMESG shows: ad0: 39266MB at ata0-master UDMA100 I have been using this drive for several years and don't remember seeing this truncation issue until I went to the RELENG_7 branch. It is strange that csup never detects that the file has been damaged in this way, requiring a download of the complete file from the CVS Server. The sysctl variable 'hw.ata.wc="0" in /boot/loader.conf cured my problem. >How-To-Repeat: Csup with the sysctl variable hw.ata.wc set to 1 >Fix: Csup with the sysctl variable hw.ata.wc set to 0 >Release-Note: >Audit-Trail: >Unformatted: From owner-freebsd-i386@FreeBSD.ORG Thu Sep 4 21:20:06 2008 Return-Path: Delivered-To: freebsd-i386@hub.freebsd.org Received: from mx1.freebsd.org (mx1.freebsd.org [IPv6:2001:4f8:fff6::34]) by hub.freebsd.org (Postfix) with ESMTP id 22DA1106564A for ; Thu, 4 Sep 2008 21:20:06 +0000 (UTC) (envelope-from gnats@FreeBSD.org) Received: from freefall.freebsd.org (freefall.freebsd.org [IPv6:2001:4f8:fff6::28]) by mx1.freebsd.org (Postfix) with ESMTP id ECBF38FC1C for ; Thu, 4 Sep 2008 21:20:05 +0000 (UTC) (envelope-from gnats@FreeBSD.org) Received: from freefall.freebsd.org (gnats@localhost [127.0.0.1]) by freefall.freebsd.org (8.14.2/8.14.2) with ESMTP id m84LK5Lx055225 for ; Thu, 4 Sep 2008 21:20:05 GMT (envelope-from gnats@freefall.freebsd.org) Received: (from gnats@localhost) by freefall.freebsd.org (8.14.2/8.14.1/Submit) id m84LK58N055224; Thu, 4 Sep 2008 21:20:05 GMT (envelope-from gnats) Date: Thu, 4 Sep 2008 21:20:05 GMT Message-Id: <200809042120.m84LK58N055224@freefall.freebsd.org> To: freebsd-i386@FreeBSD.org From: Remko Lodder Cc: Subject: Re: i386/127095: Csup truncates files using RELENG_& X-BeenThere: freebsd-i386@freebsd.org X-Mailman-Version: 2.1.5 Precedence: list Reply-To: Remko Lodder List-Id: I386-specific issues for FreeBSD List-Unsubscribe: , List-Archive: List-Post: List-Help: List-Subscribe: , X-List-Received-Date: Thu, 04 Sep 2008 21:20:06 -0000 The following reply was made to PR i386/127095; it has been noted by GNATS. And it's this LSI controller appears to be causing me some problems. When I first installed 7.0-STABLE from CD the onboard broadcom netextreme network cards were not working upgraded to 7.0-STABLE-p4 via cvsup. After rebooting the following appears during boot: acd0: dvdr at ata5-master sata150 **pauses here for awhile*** mpt0: completing timeout/aborted req 0xc4e1ebe8:95 mpt0: timeout requests already complete. interrupts may not be functioning The box hangs here and continues to display these mpt errors. Eventually the machine locks and requires a cold reboot. If i boot in safe mode the machine boots just fine (and the onboard network cards appear too). Oddly, I didn't have this problem with the fresh install of 7.0-STABLE from the cd. it occurs only since I upgraded to 7.0-STABLE-p4 (I can confirm it also occurs in 7.1-PRERELEASE). One thing to note is I found a possibly similar bug report which was left unconfirmed/unsolved (i386/88717) Can anyone offer any insight or help?
