What happens is that when the authentcation in SSH goes wrong, it will be unavailable for a short time. Don't ask me why, don't ask me how. It happens, see my email about this earlier this week: It shits me too. Firewall that SSH port to allow only access from authorized sources, that way you can prevent this from happening. I had one where the iLO hung as you described and even cold resets wouldn't bring it back. HP said that it was most likely the board, and wanted to replace it. But for whatever reason, I never got them in to do it. So I went on hope that this Achilles heel machine would stay up. Ultimately it crashed hard, and the saving grace was that for some reason, that final remote hands reset brought the iLO back to life and I was able to fsck through it. It has been up since, about 4 months. Anyway. in general I am iLO yay! But maybe you should see if HP will swap out the board. The real truth here is: iLO is what is running on generation 3-4 DL360/380 for example. The above firmware version would indicated it to be iLO. iLO2 is the new "improved" hardware, which you can find on generation 5 DL360/380 for example. The firmware version there is currently at 1.43. I like iLO better as it allows ssh text console, which iLO2 does not support. -- Regards, Ulf. --------------------------------------------------------------------- Ulf Zimmermann, 1525 Pacific Ave., Alameda, CA-94501, #: 510-865-0204 You can find my resume at: http://www.Alameda.net/~ulf/resume.html From owner-freebsd-proliant@FreeBSD.ORG Sat Mar 22 22:21:08 2008 Return-Path: Delivered-To: freebsd-proliant@freebsd.org Received: from mx1.freebsd.org (mx1.freebsd.org [IPv6:2001:4f8:fff6::34]) by hub.freebsd.org (Postfix) with ESMTP id AD6CA1065670 for ; Sat, 22 Mar 2008 22:21:08 +0000 (UTC) (envelope-from ulf@alameda.net) Received: from mail.alameda.net (mail.alameda.net [194.55.105.10]) by mx1.freebsd.org (Postfix) with ESMTP id 992428FC1C for ; Sat, 22 Mar 2008 22:21:08 +0000 (UTC) (envelope-from ulf@alameda.net) Received: by mail.alameda.net (Postfix, from userid 1000) id D15E933D7C; Sat, 22 Mar 2008 15:01:00 -0700 (PDT) Date: Sat, 22 Mar 2008 15:01:00 -0700 From: Ulf Zimmermann To: Brad Miele Message-ID: <20080322220100.GG26105@evil.alameda.net> References: <24B7C28CEC086FAB879910E4@ganymede.hub.org> <20080316210435.R2097@shanty.ipnstock.com> Mime-Version: 1.0 Content-Type: text/plain; charset=us-ascii Content-Disposition: inline In-Reply-To: <20080316210435.R2097@shanty.ipnstock.com> User-Agent: Mutt/1.4.2.2i Organization: Alameda Networks, Inc. It has been up since, about 4 months. We currently have about 200 HP servers and once in a while I will get iLOs which need a hard reset (remove power from system). But if iLO starts to become unresponsive, a reset from OS (Linux in our case *sigh*) will usual bring it back up. Even the OS reset is not very often. > > Anyway. in general I am iLO yay! Once in a while we just need to restart the network part of it, but that can be done by taking out the cable and putting it back in. Or as we do: reboot the iLO-switch (which is a dumb 10/100 Mb switch). There is a more serious issue, when you ~. out of an SSH session while you are in the remote console. That requires a cold reboot of the whole system (i.e. not only a "power off" from inside the iLO, but a full pwoer down of the system).
