Just FYI, I was unsuccessful in getting 1.9.100 to work on my dual head DVI setup (G550). I got the second monitor to come up, but it was offset with respect to the origin by several hundred pixels in both the X and Y direction (kind of hard to explain, but definitely unusable). I tried to get it right with various invocations of xrandr but to no avail. It's possible that further experimentation would have yielded a working setup, but before I could find out Xorg dumped core and I gave up working with 1.9.100. I had no luck with 1.4.7 either, but now I have a 100% working setup after applying Warren's patch (http://www.wonkity.com/~wblock/mgapatch/xorg-patch.txt) and also (and this is the key part that made everything start working) copying *both* mga_drv.so and mga_hal_drv.so into /usr/local/lib/xorg/modules/drivers from the mga_hal port (x11-servers/mga_hal, files from matrox_driver-x86_32-4.4.0/xserver/7.0.0) Using the mga_drv.so from the xf86-video-mga-1.4.7,1 I could not get any DVI output at all from Xorg but using the version from mga_hal it works fine. Oh and finally, I have to use the -ignoreABI switch to Xorg, otherwise it won't start. So, to summarise, to get dual head DVI working with a Matrox G550, 1) warren's patch for reading the video BIOS from /dev/mem 2) manually copy mga_drv.so and mga_hal_drv.so from matrox_driver-x86_32-4.4.0/xserver/7.0.0 in the x11-servers/mga_hal port into /usr/local/lib/xorg/modules/drivers 3) start X with -ignoreABI Everything works beautifully after that as it did with xorg 7.2. Nouveau's TiNDC #33 (http://nouveau.freedesktop.org/wiki/Nouveau_Companion_33) shows that there were some progress made by NetBSD folks. It would seem that all of the fonts in my GTK/GNOME apps are messed up now and I am left with replacements of some core fonts. I believe it has something to do with anti-aliased fonts being used instead of bitmap ones. I *think* it is to do with Xorg 7.3 rather than Gnome.... but there is Gnome stuff you can do that sorts it if Gnome is your window manager (see thread "Fonts, windows too large after 2.20 upgrade" in freebsd-gnome list). For other window managers I'm not sure what you need to do (there must be some xorg.conf magic - surely???). Maybe ask on the Xorg mailing lists? (and enlighten us when you discover the answer!) Negative. It does definitely not work suitably in a single head config, the way it currently is. It solves the problems from ports/117726, but not those from ports/116851. Explanation: I recently upgraded all my ports, going from somewhen in 2005 to most current, and had to notice that the Matrox G400 MAX, which was working perfectly with the old ports (it was Xorg 6.9, I think), now did no longer work suitable. OS still stays RELEASE-5.5, w/ all patches installed. What now got compiled from current portsdir is the 1.4.7 mga driver with patch-1.4.7-master-20080102 applied. The problem here is: I see error >(EE) Cannot find empty range to map base to >(WW) MGA(0): Video BIOS info block not detected! as described in ports/116851, and, while the old ports yielded >(==) MGA(0): Min pixel clock is 17 MHz >(--) MGA(0): Max pixel clock is 360 MHz >(II) MGA(0): Clock range: 17.75 to 360.00 MHz now I see >(==) MGA(0): Min pixel clock is 17 MHz >(--) MGA(0): Max pixel clock is 252 MHz >(II) MGA(0): Clock range: 17.75 to 252.00 MHz And consequentially, neither 2032x1480@70Hz nor 1800x1300@80Hz do work anymore. (Lower resolutions would work.) I tried to use the 1.9.100 version as of 2008/01/01, but that way I got exactly into the problems as described in PR ports/117726. When I did install Warren's workaround for xorg-server (as described in http://www.wonkity.com/~wblock/mgapatch/xorg-patch.txt, but staying with 1.4.7+patch driver just as it currently is), this did solve my problem, dotclock back at 360, resolutions alright. Thank You, Warren! So, while the matters concerning ports/117726 (which looks to me concerning more or less the question if one is willing to use xrandr) seem to be widely discussed, the other problem (ports/116851, i.e. the card not reading BIOS information), seems now to be in the status "closed unsolved", and no one seems to care about anymore.(?!) Furthermore, the ports/116851 problem is obviousely NOT concerning only dual-head configs. It seems to significantly reduce standard performance values, too! And, worst of all, it is a real "Dehancement": things that were reached without problem two years ago are now beyound the specs! So, at first I would like to ask a couple of questions: 1. What precisely did You do to make this "(EE) Cannot find empty range" error go away - if anything? (If you have flatscreens, you most likely do not need dotclocks above 250MHz, so there would not be a need to do anything about it). 2. Is the patch in ports/117726 (and now in the ports-tree) supposed to fix this error? The statements in the PR database are all too obscure, while the code looks like it might be (and I'm not going to do logical analysis there). I just can say, it does _not_ work for me (while Warren's patch does). It may likely be the case that something that would be necessary has not got upgraded here, or not got installed. It may also be the case that it works on RELEASE-6 but not on RELEASE-5 - which wouldn't be a big matter as I am going for RELENG-6.3 very soon now and RELEASE-5 is going out of support anyway - I only would like to figure out a precise status. 3. As this problem definitely yields from changes in the Xorg (and most likely not, what Warren suggests in ports/116851 PR, from things that BIOS or OS do - because I did not change anything on BIOS or OS!), can we someway figure out when it came up and what was changed then? (I have a scope of possibly more than two years, and that's a bit long.) 4. As there seems to exist the opinion that this problem belongs to Xorg maintainers (and as I have the strong opinion that before creating fixes one should figure out what made the problem arise in the first place - especially with things that did already work at an earlier time): is there an involvement of Xorg maintainers in this matter? (I searched, but did not find any comment on that) 5. (sorry, can't resist) Is it regular practice in the PR handling to place things that have no easy solution right now, but did already work before, into status "closed unsolved", only because they actually should belong to some other party (and without mentioning the tracking-ID at that other party)? No offense meant - there are different styles of doing such. Sorry - I would have preferred to just figure out whats wrong and then act as necessary - but this is so obscure, I dont get to the point. rgds, PMc From owner-freebsd-x11@FreeBSD.ORG Fri Jan 18 16:13:16 2008 Return-Path: Delivered-To: freebsd-x11@FreeBSD.org Received: from mx1.freebsd.org (mx1.freebsd.org [IPv6:2001:4f8:fff6::34]) by hub.freebsd.org (Postfix) with ESMTP id 4A8DC16A419; Fri, 18 Jan 2008 16:13:16 +0000 (UTC) (envelope-from wblock@wonkity.com) Received: from wonkity.com (wonkity.com [67.158.26.137]) by mx1.freebsd.org (Postfix) with ESMTP id E288613C43E; Fri, 18 Jan 2008 16:13:15 +0000 (UTC) (envelope-from wblock@wonkity.com) Received: from wonkity.com (localhost [127.0.0.1]) by wonkity.com (8.14.2/8.14.2) with ESMTP id m0IGCkBb024664; Fri, 18 Jan 2008 09:12:46 -0700 (MST) (envelope-from wblock@wonkity.com) Received: from localhost (wblock@localhost) by wonkity.com (8.14.2/8.14.2/Submit) with ESMTP id m0IGCju4024661; Fri, 18 Jan 2008 09:12:46 -0700 (MST) (envelope-from wblock@wonkity.com) Date: Fri, 18 Jan 2008 09:12:45 -0700 (MST) From: Warren Block To: Peter Much In-Reply-To: <20080118045934.GA35739@gate.oper.dinoex.org> Message-ID: <20080118082940.M24541@wonkity.com> References: <20080118045934.GA35739@gate.oper.dinoex.org> MIME-Version: 1.0 Content-Type: TEXT/PLAIN; charset=US-ASCII; format=flowed X-Greylist: Sender IP whitelisted, not delayed by milter-greylist-3.0 (wonkity.com [127.0.0.1]); Fri, 18 Jan 2008 09:12:46 -0700 (MST) Cc: freebsd-x11@FreeBSD.org, flz@FreeBSD.org Subject: Re: x11-drivers/xf86-video-mga: current issues X-BeenThere: freebsd-x11@freebsd.org X-Mailman-Version: 2.1.5 Precedence: list List-Id: X11 on FreeBSD -- maintaining and support List-Unsubscribe: , List-Archive: List-Post: List-Help: List-Subscribe: , X-List-Received-Date: Fri, 18 Jan 2008 16:13:16 -0000 On Fri, 17 Jan 2008, Peter Much wrote: > So, while the matters concerning ports/117726 (which looks to me > concerning more or less the question if one is willing to use xrandr) > seem to be widely discussed, the other problem (ports/116851, i.e. > the card not reading BIOS information), seems now to be in the status > "closed unsolved", and no one seems to care about anymore.(?!) The bug with xorg not reading the MGA video BIOS is an old X bug. The next port version of xorg on FreeBSD should use libpciaccess, which will make that hack unnecessary. Leaving 116851 open would be a bit misleading, since it's not a FreeBSD bug. > 4. (I searched, but did not find any comment on > that) I've encouraged peole with modeline problems to either enter bug reports in bugs.freedesktop.org or contact Tilman Sauerbeck. I can't find any mga modeline bug reports there, maybe just searching badly. A few days ago I sent an email to Tilman Sauerbeck about the modeline problem, but it's hard to provide specifics when the bug is in a feature I don't use. Hopefully others have also contacted him. It would be nice to get the problems fixed before the next xorg release so we don't have to go through the xrandr-1.2 pain all over again. If anyone wants to work on mga-1.9.100 directly, I'd be willing to help test. Come to think of it, a test case that demonstrates the modeline problem would be nice. -Warren Block * Rapid City, South Dakota USA From owner-freebsd-x11@FreeBSD.ORG Fri Jan 18 19:13:19 2008 Return-Path: Delivered-To: freebsd-x11@FreeBSD.org Received: from mx1.freebsd.org (mx1.freebsd.org [IPv6:2001:4f8:fff6::34]) by hub.freebsd.org (Postfix) with ESMTP id 1F62916A418; Fri, 18 Jan 2008 19:13:19 +0000 (UTC) (envelope-from pmc@citylink.dinoex.sub.org) Received: from uucp.dinoex.sub.de (uucp.dinoex.sub.de [194.45.71.2]) by mx1.freebsd.org (Postfix) with ESMTP id 8090A13C447; Fri, 18 Jan 2008 19:13:18 +0000 (UTC) (envelope-from pmc@citylink.dinoex.sub.org) Received: from uucp.dinoex.sub.de (uucp@uucp.dinoex.sub.de [194.45.71.2] (may be forged)) by uucp.dinoex.sub.de (8.14.1/8.14.0) with ESMTP id m0IJD8xE091074; Fri, 18 Jan 2008 20:13:08 +0100 (CET) (envelope-from pmc@citylink.dinoex.sub.org) Received: from citylink.dinoex.sub.org (uucp@localhost) by uucp.dinoex.sub.de (8.14.1/8.14.0/Submit) with UUCP id m0IJD8PM091073; Fri, 18 Jan 2008 20:13:08 +0100 (CET) (envelope-from pmc@citylink.dinoex.sub.org) Received: from gate.oper.dinoex.org (gate-e [192.168.98.2]) by citylink.dinoex.sub.de (8.13.6/8.13.6) with ESMTP id m0IIhmYL010859; Fri, 18 Jan 2008 19:43:48 +0100 (CET) (envelope-from peter@gate.oper.dinoex.org) Received: from gate.oper.dinoex.org (gate-e [192.168.98.2]) by gate.oper.dinoex.org (8.13.6/8.13.6) with ESMTP id m0IIg2XO010773; Fri, 18 Jan 2008 19:42:03 +0100 (CET) (envelope-from peter@gate.oper.dinoex.org) Received: (from peter@localhost) by gate.oper.dinoex.org (8.13.6/8.13.6/Submit) id m0IIg2jD010772; Fri, 18 Jan 2008 19:42:02 +0100 (CET) (envelope-from peter) Date: Fri, 18 Jan 2008 19:42:02 +0100 From: Peter Much To: wblock@wonkity.com, freebsd-x11@FreeBSD.org, flz@FreeBSD.org, tilman@code-monkey.de Message-ID: <20080118184155.GA7148@gate.oper.dinoex.org> Mime-Version: 1.0 Content-Type: text/plain; charset=us-ascii Content-Disposition: inline User-Agent: Mutt/1.4.2.1i X-Milter: Spamilter (Reciever: uucp.dinoex.sub.de; Sender-ip: 194.45.71.2; Sender-helo: uucp.dinoex.sub.de; ) X-Greylist: Sender IP whitelisted, not delayed by milter-greylist-3.0 (uucp.dinoex.sub.de [194.45.71.2]); Fri, 18 Jan 2008 20:13:09 +0100 (CET) Cc: Subject: Re: x11-drivers/xf86-video-mga: current issues (Update) X-BeenThere: freebsd-x11@freebsd.org X-Mailman-Version: 2.1.5 Precedence: list List-Id: X11 on FreeBSD -- maintaining and support List-Unsubscribe: , List-Archive: List-Post: List-Help: List-Subscribe: , X-List-Received-Date: Fri, 18 Jan 2008 19:13:19 -0000 Ref: ports/116851 Hi folks, sorry, I made a mistake: I didn't know that http://bugs.freedesktop.org _is_ the official Xorg PR database (it looked to me more like some linux usergroup). I spent the last night restoring my old installation from tape, and then working myself line by line thru the Xserver sourcecode, so to understand what exactly is happening there. I will talk to Tilman Sauerbeck about that. In short, the reason why this did work with Xorg 6.9 seems to be that they didnt test for the size. So they didnt recognize the problem (if it is one, at all), continued to read the Bios, and had success. rgds, PMc From owner-freebsd-x11@FreeBSD.ORG Fri Jan 18 20:57:45 2008 Return-Path: Delivered-To: freebsd-x11@freebsd.org Received: from mx1.freebsd.org (mx1.freebsd.org [IPv6:2001:4f8:fff6::34]) by hub.freebsd.org (Postfix) with ESMTP id 0184D16A41B for ; Fri, 18 Jan 2008 20:57:45 +0000 (UTC) (envelope-from adamk@voicenet.com) Received: from b.mx.visualtech.com (imap.visualtech.com [208.16.19.9]) by mx1.freebsd.org (Postfix) with SMTP id 7241C13C461 for ; Fri, 18 Jan 2008 20:57:34 +0000 (UTC) (envelope-from adamk@voicenet.com) Received: from [192.168.0.101] (c-68-45-111-238.hsd1.nj.comcast.net [68.45.111.238]) by b.mx.visualtech.com (Postfix) with ESMTP id B7693490E3 for ; Fri, 18 Jan 2008 15:43:14 -0500 (EST) From: Adam K Kirchhoff To: freebsd-x11@freebsd.org Date: Fri, 18 Jan 2008 15:39:18 -0500 User-Agent: KMail/1.9.7 MIME-Version: 1.0 Content-Disposition: inline Message-Id: <200801181539.18735.adamk@voicenet.com> Content-Type: text/plain; charset="us-ascii" Content-Transfer-Encoding: 7bit Subject: nvidia on 8.0-CURRENT X-BeenThere: freebsd-x11@freebsd.org X-Mailman-Version: 2.1.5 Precedence: list List-Id: X11 on FreeBSD -- maintaining and support List-Unsubscribe: , List-Archive: List-Post: List-Help: List-Subscribe: , X-List-Received-Date: Fri, 18 Jan 2008 20:57:45 -0000 I realize that the nvidia drivers are not the FreeBSD developers' responsibility and that they are not supported on -CURRENT, but I'm curious if anyone has managed to get them working lately? When I keep a key held down it'll repeat at most around 10 times before stopping. Often it won't even repeat at all, and I have to keep pressing the key again each time, which is quite annoying. My keyboard settings in xorg.conf: Section "InputDevice" Identifier "Keyboard1" Driver "kbd" Option "AutoRepeat" "500 30" Option "XkbRules" "xorg" Option "XkbModel" "pc105" Option "XkbLayout" "gb" EndSection I've checked it's not a problem with the keyboard by switching back to the text console; the keys repeat properly there. Come to think of it, a test case that demonstrates the > modeline problem would be nice. I'm using MGA 2064W on NEC PC-9821Ra333 (Celeron 333MHz with 256MB RAM) with FreeBSD/pc98 8.0-CURRENT. Mga 1.4.7 works well, but 1.9.100 doesn't: at least a few months ago. At that time, I had given up 1.9.100. I'd like to test newer driver. But I have a serious problem with my mga since XFree86 4.x +FreeBSD/pc98 6.0-CURRENT, in short, "restarting X kills the system". FreeBSD/pc98 can easily hungup with just simple steps. 1. Boot FreeBSD/pc98 2. Start X 3. Exit/Quit X server 4. Start X again No operation is necessary on console between step 3 and 4, just type "startx" at step 4, and xdm can also kill the system if it restarts X. No db, no crash dump, no dcons output on serial console, and no kernel nor X messages are recorded. My FreeBSD/pc98 just hungs up. All I can do is just pressing a reset switch on Ra333. :( At least for me, 1.9.100 driver is worth than the system hungup, because it cannot display. Anyway I have to test the latest mga driver to keep my pc98 up-to-date. -- NAKAJI Hiroyuki From owner-freebsd-x11@FreeBSD.ORG Sat Jan 19 22:20:17 2008 Return-Path: Delivered-To: freebsd-x11@freebsd.org Received: from mx1.freebsd.org (mx1.freebsd.org [IPv6:2001:4f8:fff6::34]) by hub.freebsd.org (Postfix) with ESMTP id 09F3116A420 for ; Sat, 19 Jan 2008 22:20:17 +0000 (UTC) (envelope-from ericx@vineyard.net) Received: from vineyard.net (k1.vineyard.net [204.17.195.90]) by mx1.freebsd.org (Postfix) with ESMTP id E0EC213C4F6 for ; Sat, 19 Jan 2008 22:20:16 +0000 (UTC) (envelope-from ericx@vineyard.net) Received: from localhost (loopback [127.0.0.1]) by vineyard.net (Postfix) with ESMTP id CBE3891519 for ; Sat, 19 Jan 2008 17:01:36 -0500 (EST) X-Virus-Scanned: by AMaViS-king1 at Vineyard.NET Received: from vineyard.net ([127.0.0.1]) by localhost (king1.vineyard.net [127.0.0.1]) (amavisd-new, port 10024) with LMTP id y1hxogvuxEcy for ; Sat, 19 Jan 2008 17:01:36 -0500 (EST) Received: from [204.128.227.8] (olive.ericx.net [204.128.227.8]) by vineyard.net (Postfix) with ESMTP id 458AE9150D for ; Sat, 19 Jan 2008 17:01:36 -0500 (EST) Message-ID: <4792733B.7010409@vineyard.net> Date: Sat, 19 Jan 2008 17:01:31 -0500 From: "Eric W.
