You can also work around the problem with: sysctl net.inet.tcp.tso=0 This issue was mentioned elsewhere on one of the FreeBSD lists, but I can't seem to locate it now. It seems that if TSO is enabled, the system sends packets up to the system's *own* interface MTU-40, ignoring the MSS. After failing to received a delayed ACK, the system drops back to the correct frame size, but the resulting delay makes the connection really slow. Like I said, I can reproduce this behavior on an i386 system with a TSO-capable fxp interface and can send tcpdump output very similar to Andrey's if needed. michael From owner-freebsd-amd64@FreeBSD.ORG Tue May 12 14:12:06 2009 Return-Path: Delivered-To: freebsd-amd64@hub.freebsd.org Received: from mx1.freebsd.org (mx1.freebsd.org [IPv6:2001:4f8:fff6::34]) by hub.freebsd.org (Postfix) with ESMTP id A0FBC106568F; Tue, 12 May 2009 14:12:06 +0000 (UTC) (envelope-from jhb@FreeBSD.org) Received: from freefall.freebsd.org (freefall.freebsd.org [IPv6:2001:4f8:fff6::28]) by mx1.freebsd.org (Postfix) with ESMTP id 743AC8FC21; Tue, 12 May 2009 14:12:06 +0000 (UTC) (envelope-from jhb@FreeBSD.org) Received: from freefall.freebsd.org (jhb@localhost [127.0.0.1]) by freefall.freebsd.org (8.14.3/8.14.3) with ESMTP id n4CEC62S036483; Tue, 12 May 2009 14:12:06 GMT (envelope-from jhb@freefall.freebsd.org) Received: (from jhb@localhost) by freefall.freebsd.org (8.14.3/8.14.3/Submit) id n4CEC6jB036479; Tue, 12 May 2009 14:12:06 GMT (envelope-from jhb) Date: Tue, 12 May 2009 14:12:06 GMT Message-Id: <200905121412.n4CEC6jB036479@freefall.freebsd.org> To: jhb@FreeBSD.org, freebsd-amd64@FreeBSD.org, freebsd-net@FreeBSD.org From: jhb@FreeBSD.org Cc: Subject: Re: kern/134486: Wrong MSS in outgoing packets for non-default (1460) MSS X-BeenThere: freebsd-amd64@freebsd.org X-Mailman-Version: 2.1.5 Precedence: list List-Id: Porting FreeBSD to the AMD64 platform List-Unsubscribe: , List-Archive: List-Post: List-Help: List-Subscribe: , X-List-Received-Date: Tue, 12 May 2009 14:12:07 -0000 Synopsis: Wrong MSS in outgoing packets for non-default (1460) MSS Responsible-Changed-From-To: freebsd-amd64->freebsd-net Responsible-Changed-By: jhb Responsible-Changed-When: Tue May 12 14:11:35 UTC 2009 Responsible-Changed-Why: This is a network stack issue, not amd64-specific. http://www.freebsd.org/cgi/query-pr.cgi?pr=134486 From owner-freebsd-amd64@FreeBSD.ORG Wed May 13 12:50:05 2009 Return-Path: Delivered-To: freebsd-amd64@hub.freebsd.org Received: from mx1.freebsd.org (mx1.freebsd.org [IPv6:2001:4f8:fff6::34]) by hub.freebsd.org (Postfix) with ESMTP id 3A0AF1065670 for ; Wed, 13 May 2009 12:50:05 +0000 (UTC) (envelope-from gnats@FreeBSD.org) Received: from freefall.freebsd.org (freefall.freebsd.org [IPv6:2001:4f8:fff6::28]) by mx1.freebsd.org (Postfix) with ESMTP id 269EC8FC17 for ; Wed, 13 May 2009 12:50:05 +0000 (UTC) (envelope-from gnats@FreeBSD.org) Received: from freefall.freebsd.org (gnats@localhost [127.0.0.1]) by freefall.freebsd.org (8.14.3/8.14.3) with ESMTP id n4DCo4Ke005636 for ; Wed, 13 May 2009 12:50:04 GMT (envelope-from gnats@freefall.freebsd.org) Received: (from gnats@localhost) by freefall.freebsd.org (8.14.3/8.14.3/Submit) id n4DCo4um005635; Wed, 13 May 2009 12:50:04 GMT (envelope-from gnats) Date: Wed, 13 May 2009 12:50:04 GMT Message-Id: <200905131250.n4DCo4um005635@freefall.freebsd.org> To: freebsd-amd64@FreeBSD.org From: "Philip M. As a result, CPU usage indicates above 100% nearly all of the time, and immediately reverts the CPU to its maximum frequency [as it should]. 2. setting the sysctl variable dev.cpu.0.freq manually to any of the frequencies listed in dev.cpu.0.freq_levels causes the same thing to happen. 3. hardware: HP Pavilion dv7 laptop with amd64 dual core, running FreeBSD 7.2 pre-release from April 28 [this problem was in earlier 7.x versions as well]. 4. eliminating the cpufreq driver by adding hint.acpi_throttle.0.disabled="1" to loader.conf only disabled the ability to change frequencies [no other driver was available to do the job] so there's no obvious workaround. 5. From: Bob Frazier To: bug-followup@FreeBSD.org, freebsd-amd64@FreeBSD.org Cc: Subject: Re: amd64/122695: [cpufreq] Lack of cpufreq control using amd64 eith core2 duo or quad Date: Thu, 14 May 2009 10:44:35 -0700 I appear to be having a similar problem, and would like to provide additional information that (hopefully) will help to resolve it. 1. when running powerd, whenever the cpu frequency drops below the maximum (2100) value, cpu performance [based on keystroke echo and general display slowness] appears to be at the LOWEST possible frequency. 5.
