From: freebsdpr To: bug-followup@FreeBSD.org, freebsdpr@sensation.net.au Cc: Subject: Re: amd64/133977: [panic] [ffs] "panic: ffs_blkfree: freeing free block" after 7.0R->7.1R amd64 src upgrade [regression] Date: Wed, 17 Jun 2009 13:27:20 +1000 (EST) I am also seeing this behaviour on a machine with 7.2-RELEASE (i386) installed. A tech powered off the machine to replace a HD, rather than cleanly shutting it down, so it now appears to be stuck in a reboot - fsck - panic cycle. The file system has a lot of small files (at least a few million) so fsck takes considerable time; I presume the sheer number of blocks fsck is fixing/updating is eventually causing the panic. From vmcore.0: dev = mirror/gm0s1e, block = 424638984, fs = /var panic: ffs_blkfree: freeing free block df -ik: Filesystem 1024-blocks Used Avail Capacity iused ifree %iused Mounted on /dev/mirror/gm0s1e 933330372 490280876 368383068 57% 10280264 110353078 9% /var At this stage there seems to be no option but to disable soft updates for any 7.1+ machine with a large (lots of files and/or large capacity + large occupied capacity) file system...? I can't find any bug fix, but perhaps I'm looking in the wrong places. Thanks. I didn't either, but the vast profusion of CPUs that Intel calls "Xeon" makes matters very confusing. Do you know the CPU model number? (I suppose you could take the machine apart and read the chip, if nothing else. See http://support.intel.com/support/processors/sb/CS-028738.htm) Or is there possibly some useful information printed by the BIOS at boot time? Once you have a number, http://processorfinder.intel.com/ may be of help. Intel also has their own identification utility at http://www.intel.com/support/processors/tools/piu/index.htm . There's a Windows version as well as a bootable version. (The bootable version claims to be OS independent but the download is an EXE file, so I'm not sure how that is supposed to work.) -- Nate Eldredge neldredge@math.ucsd.edu From owner-freebsd-amd64@FreeBSD.ORG Wed Jun 17 18:58:57 2009 Return-Path: Delivered-To: freebsd-amd64@freebsd.org Received: from mx1.freebsd.org (mx1.freebsd.org [IPv6:2001:4f8:fff6::34]) by hub.freebsd.org (Postfix) with ESMTP id 17E1D106566C for ; Wed, 17 Jun 2009 18:58:57 +0000 (UTC) (envelope-from neldredge@math.ucsd.edu) Received: from euclid.ucsd.edu (euclid.ucsd.edu [132.239.145.52]) by mx1.freebsd.org (Postfix) with ESMTP id EBD168FC0C for ; Wed, 17 Jun 2009 18:58:56 +0000 (UTC) (envelope-from neldredge@math.ucsd.edu) Received: from zeno.ucsd.edu (zeno.ucsd.edu [132.239.145.22]) by euclid.ucsd.edu (8.11.7p3+Sun/8.11.7) with ESMTP id n5HIwuo21726; Wed, 17 Jun 2009 11:58:56 -0700 (PDT) Received: from localhost (neldredg@localhost) by zeno.ucsd.edu (8.11.7p3+Sun/8.11.7) with ESMTP id n5HIwuo12987; Wed, 17 Jun 2009 11:58:56 -0700 (PDT) X-Authentication-Warning: zeno.ucsd.edu: neldredg owned process doing -bs Date: Wed, 17 Jun 2009 11:58:56 -0700 (PDT) From: Nate Eldredge X-X-Sender: neldredg@zeno.ucsd.edu To: Jo Rhett In-Reply-To: Message-ID: References: <500D653E-E4EE-4E49-94C3-E12754919DA4@netconsonance.com> MIME-Version: 1.0 Content-Type: TEXT/PLAIN; charset=US-ASCII; format=flowed Cc: freebsd-amd64@freebsd.org Subject: Re: cpu does not support long mode X-BeenThere: freebsd-amd64@freebsd.org X-Mailman-Version: 2.1.5 Precedence: list List-Id: Porting FreeBSD to the AMD64 platform List-Unsubscribe: , List-Archive: List-Post: List-Help: List-Subscribe: , X-List-Received-Date: Wed, 17 Jun 2009 18:58:57 -0000 On Wed, 17 Jun 2009, Jo Rhett wrote: >> >> On Wed, 17 Jun 2009, Jo Rhett wrote: >>> I've got a Tyan S2720 with dual Xeon 2.4G dual-core processors here that I >>> was going to test out 64-bit support with. Wikipedia lists that as one of the "Prestonia" family. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_Intel_Xeon_microprocessors#.22Prestonia.22_.28standard-voltage.2C_130_nm.29 See the "Xeon 2.4" entry. The main Wikipedia Xeon page describes Prestonia as a series of 130nm 32-bit CPUs released in 2002. (The first amd64 CPU to be released was AMD's Opteron in April 2003; Intel did not get in that game until the Nocona family was released in mid-2004.) http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Intel_Xeon#Prestonia The Prestonia family was single-core, but supported hyper-threading, and so would appear to FreeBSD as two logical CPUs. This is probably the source of most of the confusion. > Hyper threading siblings: 2 [...] > HT Hyper Threading Ah, there it is. So it appears that you really do have a 32-bit machine on your hands. Sorry :( This was some interesting research, by the way: I learned something about CPU history, and the horrific mess that is Intel's part numbering system. -- Nate Eldredge neldredge@math.ucsd.edu From owner-freebsd-amd64@FreeBSD.ORG Wed Jun 17 21:12:12 2009 Return-Path: Delivered-To: freebsd-amd64@freebsd.org Received: from mx1.freebsd.org (mx1.freebsd.org [IPv6:2001:4f8:fff6::34]) by hub.freebsd.org (Postfix) with ESMTP id 1ABA8106564A for ; Wed, 17 Jun 2009 21:12:12 +0000 (UTC) (envelope-from jrhett@netconsonance.com) Received: from mail.netconsonance.com (mail.netconsonance.com [198.207.204.4]) by mx1.freebsd.org (Postfix) with ESMTP id F040A8FC15 for ; Wed, 17 Jun 2009 21:12:11 +0000 (UTC) (envelope-from jrhett@netconsonance.com) Received: from [10.66.240.161] (public-wireless.sv.svcolo.com [64.13.135.30]) (authenticated bits=0) by mail.netconsonance.com (8.14.3/8.14.2) with ESMTP id n5HLC9pX056691; Wed, 17 Jun 2009 14:12:09 -0700 (PDT) (envelope-from jrhett@netconsonance.com) X-Virus-Scanned: amavisd-new at netconsonance.com X-Spam-Flag: NO X-Spam-Score: -1.169 X-Spam-Level: X-Spam-Status: No, score=-1.169 tagged_above=-999 required=3.5 tests=[ALL_TRUSTED=-1.44, AWL=0.270, HTML_MESSAGE=0.001] autolearn=disabled Message-Id: <692568B0-E684-4136-9DF0-62ED40675365@netconsonance.com> From: Jo Rhett To: Nate Eldredge In-Reply-To: Mime-Version: 1.0 (Apple Message framework v930.4) Date: Wed, 17 Jun 2009 14:16:00 -0700 References: <500D653E-E4EE-4E49-94C3-E12754919DA4@netconsonance.com> X-Mailer: Apple Mail (2.930.4) Content-Type: text/plain; charset=US-ASCII; format=flowed; delsp=yes Content-Transfer-Encoding: 7bit X-Content-Filtered-By: Mailman/MimeDel 2.1.5 Cc: freebsd-amd64@freebsd.org Subject: Re: cpu does not support long mode X-BeenThere: freebsd-amd64@freebsd.org X-Mailman-Version: 2.1.5 Precedence: list List-Id: Porting FreeBSD to the AMD64 platform List-Unsubscribe: , List-Archive: List-Post: List-Help: List-Subscribe: , X-List-Received-Date: Wed, 17 Jun 2009 21:12:12 -0000 On Jun 17, 2009, at 11:58 AM, Nate Eldredge wrote: > So it appears that you really do have a 32-bit machine on your > hands.
