G'day all,

I'm looking into a problem with one of the Eclipse plugin ports and I have
to say that I wonder why we bother having plugin ports. Eclipse has good
built in plugin management tools, so the only reason I can see for having
a port for one is if there is some code that needs changes (and the only
one of those I see is eclipse-cdt).

What are peoples thoughts on this? Who feels they get a lot of value out
of having FreeBSD ports for those plugins that we do have and why?

G'day indeed Greg,

Nice to hear from you. If you recall or review a few of my prior posts
on the matter, you'll find I was wondering the same thing.

I myself don't see the point at this, uh, point, besides the minor
patches to CDT, everything else is somewhat redundant and only serves to
cause confusion.

Cheers,

Mike.

Dear FreeBSD port maintainer:

As part of an ongoing effort to reduce the number of problems in
the FreeBSD ports system, we periodically notify users of ports
that are marked as "broken" in their Makefiles. In many cases
these ports are failing to compile on some subset of the FreeBSD
build environments. The most common problem is that recent versions
of -CURRENT include gcc4.2, which is much stricter than older versions.
The next most common problem is that compiles succeed on the i386
architecture (e.g. the common Intel PC), but fail on one or more
of the other architectures due to assumptions about things such as
size of various types, byte-alignment issues, and so forth.

In occasional cases we see that the same port may have different
errors in different build environments. The script that runs on the
build cluster uses heuristics to try to 'guess' the error type to
help you isolate problems, but it is only a rough guide.

One more note: on occasion, there are transient build errors seen
on the build farm. Unfortunately, there is not yet any way for this
algorithm to tell the difference (humans are much, much better at
this kind of thing.)

The errors are listed below. In the case where the same problem
exists on more than one build environment, the URL points to the
latest errorlog for that type. (By 'build environment' here we
mean 'combination of 5.x/6.x/-current with target architecture'.)

(Note: the dates are included to help you to gauge whether or not
the error still applies to the latest version. The program
that generates this report is not yet able to determine this
automatically.)

If these errors are ones that you are already aware of, please
accept our apologies and ignore this message. On the other hand, if
you no longer wish to maintain this port (or ports), please reply
with a message stating that, and accept our thanks for your efforts
in the past.

Every effort has been made to make sure that these error reports
really do correspond to a port that you maintain. However, due to
the fact that this is an automated process, it may indeed generate
false matches. If one of these errors fits that description,
please forward this email to the author of this software, Mark
Linimon <linimon@FreeBSD.org>, so that he can attempt to fix the
problem in the future.

Thanks for your efforts to help improve FreeBSD.

+1,

As this is the main reason that eclipse-devel is still -devel, I
wholeheartedly support removing the plugins (except those that require
native libraries, like cdt). Most eclipse problems that I've received
would have been avoided if people had used eclipse-devel in the first place.

As for CDT 5.0, even the missing native libraries are not that critical.
Some minor functionalities are not working right and the integration
with the toolchain leaves much to be desired but the functionality is
there and is working properly in the majority of cases.

Regards,

Steph (eclipse-devel maintainer hat)

IIRC, in the original discussion we wanted to get rid of all eclipse
plugins as ports and use Eclipse's plugin management system. However there
were some patches against some of these plugins. My suggestion was to push
those patches upstream and remove the plugins from our ports.

As to the removal of old eclipse versions, I think it would be nice if we
could keep legacy ones around. For example, I use 3.2.1 because of a
missing feature in later versions. perhaps eclipse-32 for this port and
similar names for the others. The most recent released eclipse should
always be eclipse and the snapshots should be eclipse-devel. No one has
put the effort into making all these changes.

Also I think eclipse-* should be in devel instead of java (as its primary
location; it can remain in java as an auxiliary category), but that's
another story.

I originally planned to have the eclipse 3.4 port named eclipse-ganymede
and have eclipse 3.3 renamed eclipse-europa. But Greg preferred to have
only one version of eclipse at any given time. This way it's easier for
the users as they know that by installing eclipse they get the latest
one (instead of having to chose between eclipse-europa,
eclipse-ganymede, eclipse-gelileo, eclipse-savor-of-the-day). I admit
that eclipse is currently lagging behind and that eclipse-devel should
already have been switched as the main eclipse port and I accept full
responsibility for that. I've been bogged down with other issues and
have not had the time to convert/test all the plugins to the new p2
framework so they integrate correctly with Ganymede.

Greg's proposition to remove the plugins will greatly facilitate my work
and enable me to concentrate on finishing the CDT port and switching
eclipse-devel to Galileo.

Steph

Hi

After recent upgrade (gnome, xorg)
eclipse-devel does not works any more

it shows splash screen, then hide it, then show again and so on in infinite loop.

In logs there is:

This is weird...

As I've not yet done the jump to the new Xorg so I can't be sure that it
will work out of the box but I would not have expected it to cause any
problems. The problem that you are reporting doesn't seems to be caused
by the switch to Xorg. Can you confirm that you didn't install any new
plugin around the time you upgraded to thew new Xorg?

Your osgi.bundles property doesn't seems quite right. The
org.eclipse.equinox.transform.hook reference should normally be listed
in a osgi.framework.extensions property. The osgi.bundles should have a
reference to the actual transforms that you are using (like
org.eclipse.equinox.transforms.xslt for example).

You could try to remove the osgi.bundles property of your config.ini
file. This should give you back most of your plugins but I guess that
the plugin that added this funny line will probably won't work.

I'll update a scratch box to the new Xorg and check whether it works
correctly just in case I'm digressing with the transform hook part.

Yes, I do not change anything in plugins while upgrade.

I've tried, for my surprise, it starts, but looks like all
configuration (with installed plugins) was lost.

Probably it does not related to Xorg upgrade but related to Gnome
upgrade ?

As far as I remember there was an command line option for eclipse to
reset configuration somehow. Unfortunately I can't remember exact
spelling. Probably this may help ?

I found out what's happening. It seems that p2 doesn't like when
eclipse's timestamp are earlier than the timestamps recorded in the
.eclipse directory. When you upgraded to Xorg 7.4, eclipse was
reinstalled, which changed the timestamps. As a workaround, you can run
the following command which should fix the problem:

find ~/.eclipse -exec touch {} \;

I have no idea yet why it's doing this though.
