Release Notes often lists hardware as supported, and it works, but not always as it should. I'd like to see your opinions, what and how good or bad works. Best regards. Piotr. I do think the list would be mostly pointless at this time as most motherboards should work fine, at least the support is at the same level as i386 where we do not have a similar board list. -- John Baldwin From owner-freebsd-amd64@FreeBSD.ORG Tue Nov 2 19:47:54 2010 Return-Path: Delivered-To: freebsd-amd64@freebsd.org Received: from mx1.freebsd.org (mx1.freebsd.org [IPv6:2001:4f8:fff6::34]) by hub.freebsd.org (Postfix) with ESMTP id 27227106564A for ; Tue, 2 Nov 2010 19:47:54 +0000 (UTC) (envelope-from piokud84@gmail.com) Received: from mail-fx0-f54.google.com (mail-fx0-f54.google.com [209.85.161.54]) by mx1.freebsd.org (Postfix) with ESMTP id AA3358FC1A for ; Tue, 2 Nov 2010 19:47:53 +0000 (UTC) Received: by fxm17 with SMTP id 17so6462371fxm.13 for ; Tue, 02 Nov 2010 12:47:52 -0700 (PDT) DKIM-Signature: v=1; a=rsa-sha256; c=relaxed/relaxed; d=gmail.com; s=gamma; h=domainkey-signature:mime-version:received:received:in-reply-to :references:date:message-id:subject:from:to:cc:content-type; bh=enLFCTXDtW6rSw1L6HkzkAU/EJ7y2OYCOVS1we6k0uE=; b=vTrFHGyEHuN07P2a93kpqP4w9u1uRPNtEzAMkKPYscVGQmb2vhMpXiejZ9V1Rgw4lP b98HVsiSZurgH9KZ6QItyd0mwuQnJiIXPFsoUICUlhHf0XAr8Pn50cZ1E4lfmcFN8U67 w8Au0VMzp0YaVwja+s1r+L9cwyQ8BEkpo1Sr4= DomainKey-Signature: a=rsa-sha1; c=nofws; d=gmail.com; s=gamma; h=mime-version:in-reply-to:references:date:message-id:subject:from:to :cc:content-type; b=b3pEu/fFpIzkGM/1A6cEpFDpw3HP5lJIMOBuRQLE0jZuTb3WJZOtKhH9BRdHKifbza 7AJguVnc7vM3xji2KBNiQoz6R30fXDpmdWillEw2qhXoN0SVuSbCWSpCStFwNJOXXbp3 /PmzZ5wb9JL8eWRrM6XqtemD8Hhy2AGzawp6g= MIME-Version: 1.0 Received: by 10.223.72.197 with SMTP id n5mr11092342faj.8.1288727272426; Tue, 02 Nov 2010 12:47:52 -0700 (PDT) Received: by 10.223.122.135 with HTTP; Tue, 2 Nov 2010 12:47:52 -0700 (PDT) In-Reply-To: <20101102201844.230f7972@ernst.jennejohn.org> References: <20101102201844.230f7972@ernst.jennejohn.org> Date: Tue, 2 Nov 2010 19:47:52 +0000 Message-ID: From: Piotr Kudzin To: gljennjohn@googlemail.com Content-Type: text/plain; charset=ISO-8859-1 X-Content-Filtered-By: Mailman/MimeDel 2.1.5 Cc: freebsd-amd64@freebsd.org Subject: Re: FreeBSD/amd64 Project -- motherboards Call For Update X-BeenThere: freebsd-amd64@freebsd.org X-Mailman-Version: 2.1.5 Precedence: list List-Id: Porting FreeBSD to the AMD64 platform List-Unsubscribe: , List-Archive: List-Post: List-Help: List-Subscribe: , X-List-Received-Date: Tue, 02 Nov 2010 19:47:54 -0000 2010/11/2 Gary Jennejohn > On Tue, 2 Nov 2010 17:52:25 +0000 > Piotr Kudzin wrote: > > > Hi all, > > > > There is a list of MBs (amd64) supported by FreeBSD: > > > > http://www.freebsd.org/platforms/amd64/motherboards.html > > > > I'd like to see an update, how newest releases of FBSD handles recent > > desktop and server solutions. That's too bad. I was just recently (last week) looking at this web page trying to find a newer motherboard to replace our Tyan h2000M boards to support the newer AMD Opteron CPUs, and was just lamenting to myself about how out-of-date it was. At the very least, it would be nice if there was a way to add server-class hardware to a "supported hardware" web page like this. It's such a pain going through all the info online about server chipsets and figuring out which are fully supported by FreeBSD (and Linux). --=20 Freddie Cash fjwcash@gmail.com From owner-freebsd-amd64@FreeBSD.ORG Tue Nov 2 20:00:16 2010 Return-Path: Delivered-To: freebsd-amd64@freebsd.org Received: from mx1.freebsd.org (mx1.freebsd.org [IPv6:2001:4f8:fff6::34]) by hub.freebsd.org (Postfix) with ESMTP id 7511B106566C for ; Tue, 2 Nov 2010 20:00:16 +0000 (UTC) (envelope-from sgk@troutmask.apl.washington.edu) Received: from troutmask.apl.washington.edu (troutmask.apl.washington.edu [128.208.78.105]) by mx1.freebsd.org (Postfix) with ESMTP id 31FF48FC08 for ; Tue, 2 Nov 2010 20:00:16 +0000 (UTC) Received: from troutmask.apl.washington.edu (localhost.apl.washington.edu [127.0.0.1]) by troutmask.apl.washington.edu (8.14.4/8.14.4) with ESMTP id oA2K0Ftr098472; Tue, 2 Nov 2010 13:00:15 -0700 (PDT) (envelope-from sgk@troutmask.apl.washington.edu) Received: (from sgk@localhost) by troutmask.apl.washington.edu (8.14.4/8.14.4/Submit) id oA2K0FwK098471; Tue, 2 Nov 2010 13:00:15 -0700 (PDT) (envelope-from sgk) Date: Tue, 2 Nov 2010 13:00:15 -0700 From: Steve Kargl To: Piotr Kudzin Message-ID: <20101102200015.GA83145@troutmask.apl.washington.edu> References: <20101102201844.230f7972@ernst.jennejohn.org> Mime-Version: 1.0 Content-Type: text/plain; charset=us-ascii Content-Disposition: inline In-Reply-To: User-Agent: Mutt/1.4.2.3i Cc: freebsd-amd64@freebsd.org Subject: Re: FreeBSD/amd64 Project -- motherboards Call For Update X-BeenThere: freebsd-amd64@freebsd.org X-Mailman-Version: 2.1.5 Precedence: list List-Id: Porting FreeBSD to the AMD64 platform List-Unsubscribe: , List-Archive: List-Post: List-Help: List-Subscribe: , X-List-Received-Date: Tue, 02 Nov 2010 20:00:16 -0000 On Tue, Nov 02, 2010 at 07:47:52PM +0000, Piotr Kudzin wrote: > > So if this list is not gonna be updated, it should be removed permanently. > Apart of that maybe some users will share their opinions with us on this > mailing list, it can be very useful if you want update your hardware, > sometimes dry informations (just like "it is supported") are not enough, > sometimes you need to know how does it work in real conditions. Folks i'm > still waiting for YOU to speak out OK, I'll speak out. Today, the list is useless. When freebsd-amd64 was introduced years ago, it was a good idea to have a list of supported motherboards because well freebsd-amd64 was new. Today, there are simply too many motherboards to keep an accurate list. Not to mention that manufacturers are constantly dropping older model motherboards for the next latest and greatest design. MSI lists 20 different boards for AMD processors alone. Three of those boards have flashing "new" icons next to the model numbers. -- Steve From owner-freebsd-amd64@FreeBSD.ORG Tue Nov 2 20:44:53 2010 Return-Path: Delivered-To: freebsd-amd64@freebsd.org Received: from mx1.freebsd.org (mx1.freebsd.org [IPv6:2001:4f8:fff6::34]) by hub.freebsd.org (Postfix) with ESMTP id 57E64106566B for ; Tue, 2 Nov 2010 20:44:53 +0000 (UTC) (envelope-from piokud84@gmail.com) Received: from mail-fx0-f54.google.com (mail-fx0-f54.google.com [209.85.161.54]) by mx1.freebsd.org (Postfix) with ESMTP id D2C1D8FC1C for ; Tue, 2 Nov 2010 20:44:52 +0000 (UTC) Received: by fxm17 with SMTP id 17so6540232fxm.13 for ; Tue, 02 Nov 2010 13:44:51 -0700 (PDT) DKIM-Signature: v=1; a=rsa-sha256; c=relaxed/relaxed; d=gmail.com; s=gamma; h=domainkey-signature:mime-version:received:received:in-reply-to :references:date:message-id:subject:from:to:cc:content-type; bh=fpQKX/IhTyRfqWxNLFN6ycEzgqxBH5h0Bc4QSVNKJ1c=; b=kive6xP2HAUgsfN7YSH6iK0jD2WyMmQZkO+qBA3NGUEYxK/TX6mP3k/z9AxKGEqhek nKkolyO/Iac01Cf9xdMl/7ijNsgBDszsZRBk4ZLuKjTc+nd8iqXegDYdw2M8W2DomC0O ADJ4nbahggU7XdBleEJGPr++JIXw9yaa96Sno= DomainKey-Signature: a=rsa-sha1; c=nofws; d=gmail.com; s=gamma; h=mime-version:in-reply-to:references:date:message-id:subject:from:to :cc:content-type; b=kvCdX1aPAYyOsIhtFoWqywHMobQt4/ueZtl290ILnKFzaLc+SNSfhy23YcYNc1Esn2 w4YTUr39nNDQisAUYRumbWIVDvIM7VHITheQFlQ4JMulm4k3WnOFLR0qO27WZ2gb7VvX puFPDfoHAGJOhnJqEQ5gIWnLdiih/3QQIM7vU= MIME-Version: 1.0 Received: by 10.223.73.207 with SMTP id r15mr6030648faj.141.1288730691744; Tue, 02 Nov 2010 13:44:51 -0700 (PDT) Received: by 10.223.122.135 with HTTP; Tue, 2 Nov 2010 13:44:51 -0700 (PDT) In-Reply-To: <4CD05E75.4030407@icyb.net.ua> References: <4CD05E75.4030407@icyb.net.ua> Date: Tue, 2 Nov 2010 20:44:51 +0000 Message-ID: From: Piotr Kudzin To: Andriy Gapon Content-Type: text/plain; charset=ISO-8859-1 X-Content-Filtered-By: Mailman/MimeDel 2.1.5 Cc: freebsd-amd64@freebsd.org Subject: Re: FreeBSD/amd64 Project -- motherboards Call For Update X-BeenThere: freebsd-amd64@freebsd.org X-Mailman-Version: 2.1.5 Precedence: list List-Id: Porting FreeBSD to the AMD64 platform List-Unsubscribe: , List-Archive: List-Post: List-Help: List-Subscribe: , X-List-Received-Date: Tue, 02 Nov 2010 20:44:53 -0000 2010/11/2 Andriy Gapon > on 02/11/2010 19:52 Piotr Kudzin said the following: > > Hi all, > > > > There is a list of MBs (amd64) supported by FreeBSD: > > > > http://www.freebsd.org/platforms/amd64/motherboards.html > > > > I'd like to see an update, how newest releases of FBSD handles recent > > desktop and server solutions. FreeBSD should work on all recent amd64 hardware. If it doesn't, then it's bug. The list that you mentioned seems to be long time obsolete and unmaintained (note the release numbers and dates). I came to $subj conclusion after some playing with converting several IOCTLs from ifhwioctl() to COMPAT_FREEBSD32. If not break ifhwioctl then: - compat32 ioctl handlers would pollute the code and make it unreadable - some native and compat32 IOCTLs (f.e.
