I'm indifferent as to whether we should change the default for -bsd, maybe we should... But before worrying about that I think the userspace emulation needs to work better, like there are still a lot of syscalls that need to be handled properly at the very least, before that is done emulating diffent archs than the host can't really work well enough to be useful. And about arm, I think all that's needed is someone to do the work... (Just like adding the missing syscall handling etc to get the other bsd-user targets working.) Cheers, Juergen PS: As an example what is to do wrt syscalls, here is one of my bsd-user updates that got committed to qemu upstream a while ago: http://git.savannah.gnu.org/cgit/qemu.git/commit/?id=78cfb07fe0dc556cae662a0fab5fe1bd33daabdb (the commitlog is incomplete since I forgot to submit one myself in the thread where I submitted the patch...) As you can see, syscall parameters may need to be converted to the target endianness/wordsize, memory they point to may need to be locked/unlocked... The good news is probably a lot of the missing code can be copied/adapted from the linux-user target like I did for e.g. TARGET_FREEBSD_NR_writev there. Sometimes (not often - but YMMV) all seamonkey windows suddenly freeze for tens of seconds and then resume to work normally. Sometimes after that flash-driven images (e.g. on youtube) disappear - just reloading current page usually fixes this problem. But things also behaved this way under RELENG_6 and _7 with old linuxolator and flash-9. So, there is some progress (flash-9 -> 10), but no, this combo isn't quite stable ;( > My users are rebelling -- any hope? Is it supposed to work? Thanks! Unfortunately, my linux-firefox crashes as soon as it >encounters any embedded flash out there :-( > >My users are rebelling -- any hope? Is it supposed to work? Thanks! Yours, Try www/linux-f10-flashplugin10 with www/nspluginwrapper and native firefox, that seems to work okay here, and in the remaining cases where flash does crash it only takes the npviewer.bin process with it not the browser itself. Be prepared to clean up leftover npviewer.bin.core files and npviewer.bin processes once in a while tho after closing a browser... Hm and I just tried www/linux-firefox-devel (3.5.10, again with www/linux-f10-flashplugin10) on http://www.youtube.com/kutiman and flash10 seems to work there too. But yes you are right when I tried www/linux-firefox (3.6.6) I got a crah, this probably has something to do with firefox' new out-of-process-plugin code that doesn't work as is in the linuxulator, see this thread: http://lists.freebsd.org/pipermail/freebsd-current/2010-March/016220.html Seems you can disable the feature tho as mentioned here: http://kb.mozillazine.org/Plugin-container_and_out-of-process_plugins#Disabling_crash_protection and indeed after setting dom.ipc.plugins.enabled.libflashplayer.so to false in about:config youtube also worked in www/linux-firefox 3.6.6. Recently a patch was committed to 8-STABLE to fix Warcraft on amd64. Perhaps Starcraft is affected as well, so you might want to update your system. That said, the above backtrace looks unrelated. So something else you can try is to change the wine port Makefile with the attached patch. Then rebuild wine. cd /usr/ports/emulators/wine patch < /path/to/wine-Makefile.diff make install --Boundary-01=_m3aRM/NmPhmfj9G Content-Type: text/plain; charset="us-ascii"; name="wine-Makefile.diff" Content-Transfer-Encoding: quoted-printable Content-Disposition: attachment; filename="wine-Makefile.diff" =2D-- Makefile.orig 2010-07-20 16:03:17.000000000 +0200 +++ Makefile 2010-07-20 16:03:34.000000000 +0200 @@ -28,7 +28,7 @@ CONFIGURE_ARGS=3D --datadir=3D${DATADIR} --verbose --disable-tests \ --without-capi --without-gphoto \ --without-gsm --without-mpg123 --without-openal \ =2D --without-sane --without-xcursor + --without-sane CONFIGURE_ENV=3D CPPFLAGS=3D"-I${LOCALBASE}/include" \ LDFLAGS=3D"-L${LOCALBASE}/lib" \ FLEX=3D"${LOCALBASE}/bin/flex" @@ -42,7 +42,7 @@ USE_BZIP2=3D yes USE_GMAKE=3D yes USE_GL=3D glu =2DUSE_XORG=3D xpm xrender +USE_XORG=3D xpm xrender xcursor =20 SUB_FILES=3D pkg-message PKGMESSAGE=3D ${WRKDIR}/pkg-message --Boundary-01=_m3aRM/NmPhmfj9G-- --nextPart11032698.T7EH9RHKnj Content-Type: application/pgp-signature; name=signature.asc Content-Description: This is a digitally signed message part. -----BEGIN PGP SIGNATURE----- Version: GnuPG v2.0.15 (FreeBSD) iF4EABEIAAYFAkxFre0ACgkQfoCS2CCgtisiiAEAiAXQwp3LwDP3VdwgiYS1yM3x XC5fX2SsindXJK0E27IA/RYjZlj9udyYbyPC8NGAQumOkQH/KoS2hULLRcvhWAG6 =cqo0 -----END PGP SIGNATURE----- --nextPart11032698.T7EH9RHKnj-- From owner-freebsd-emulation@FreeBSD.ORG Tue Jul 20 17:21:01 2010 Return-Path: Delivered-To: freebsd-emulation@FreeBSD.org Received: from mx1.freebsd.org (mx1.freebsd.org [IPv6:2001:4f8:fff6::34]) by hub.freebsd.org (Postfix) with ESMTP id 1AD201065674 for ; Tue, 20 Jul 2010 17:21:01 +0000 (UTC) (envelope-from nox@jelal.kn-bremen.de) Received: from smtp.kn-bremen.de (gelbbaer.kn-bremen.de [78.46.108.116]) by mx1.freebsd.org (Postfix) with ESMTP id BEC788FC1A for ; Tue, 20 Jul 2010 17:21:00 +0000 (UTC) Received: by smtp.kn-bremen.de (Postfix, from userid 10) id 7CB311E0020E; Tue, 20 Jul 2010 19:20:59 +0200 (CEST) Received: from triton8.kn-bremen.de (noident@localhost [127.0.0.1]) by triton8.kn-bremen.de (8.14.4/8.14.3) with ESMTP id o6KHEX5c027244; Tue, 20 Jul 2010 19:14:33 +0200 (CEST) (envelope-from nox@triton8.kn-bremen.de) Received: (from nox@localhost) by triton8.kn-bremen.de (8.14.4/8.14.3/Submit) id o6KHEW5B027243; Tue, 20 Jul 2010 19:14:32 +0200 (CEST) (envelope-from nox) From: Juergen Lock Date: Tue, 20 Jul 2010 19:14:32 +0200 To: Roman Divacky Message-ID: <20100720171432.GA26794@triton8.kn-bremen.de> References: <201007191903.o6JJ3g8Y075986@triton8.kn-bremen.de> <4C45399F.7010304@aldan.algebra.com> <20100720135806.GA88064@freebsd.org> MIME-Version: 1.0 Content-Type: text/plain; charset=us-ascii Content-Disposition: inline In-Reply-To: <20100720135806.GA88064@freebsd.org> User-Agent: Mutt/1.5.20 (2009-06-14) Cc: "Mikhail T." , freebsd-emulation@FreeBSD.org, Juergen Lock Subject: Re: flash on 8.1? (And I just looked at my older post, http://lists.freebsd.org/pipermail/freebsd-current/2010-March/016220.html seems I checked this before and saw that ff has fallback code for when the syscall is missing.) Mikhail, have you tried ff's -safe-mode, or maybe even better creating a new profile from scratch? And if that doesn't work maybe you should really use a native browser with nspluginwrapper like most(?) of us do... But I find it disturbing, that different methods were needed on i386 and amd64 :-( -mi From owner-freebsd-emulation@FreeBSD.ORG Tue Jul 20 20:21:19 2010 Return-Path: Delivered-To: freebsd-emulation@freebsd.org Received: from mx1.freebsd.org (mx1.freebsd.org [IPv6:2001:4f8:fff6::34]) by hub.freebsd.org (Postfix) with ESMTP id 078921065670 for ; Tue, 20 Jul 2010 20:21:19 +0000 (UTC) (envelope-from mickael.maillot@gmail.com) Received: from mail-ey0-f182.google.com (mail-ey0-f182.google.com [209.85.215.182]) by mx1.freebsd.org (Postfix) with ESMTP id 875F28FC15 for ; Tue, 20 Jul 2010 20:21:18 +0000 (UTC) Received: by eyh6 with SMTP id 6so1658554eyh.13 for ; Tue, 20 Jul 2010 13:21:17 -0700 (PDT) DKIM-Signature: v=1; a=rsa-sha256; c=relaxed/relaxed; d=gmail.com; s=gamma; h=domainkey-signature:mime-version:received:received:in-reply-to :references:date:message-id:subject:from:to:cc:content-type :content-transfer-encoding; bh=S2K6WIQ2h54gaj2i5FWT2Ih4y3IYOHXp3nyNSEiN3R0=; b=H+NbkLpXtrXFXbsja+K4at0c/upT4hs8orWHLzNkOlTEJPXuq5ujR2RH8bPZ61GcEj s9/vz+LiZTJzE9Pma3mCYJirDdTQOHehFrT0sLb/wNZ4pjyl4NAGO1aGPaKVM+NZ1bi1 BssuSlQT+NExTQPTVEeh9tQhHoFllZvbg4AHs= DomainKey-Signature: a=rsa-sha1; c=nofws; d=gmail.com; s=gamma; h=mime-version:in-reply-to:references:date:message-id:subject:from:to :cc:content-type:content-transfer-encoding; b=Buwp2Gc7B316jVFDrjjgV3hVuxM9aELXWq8TSiM+truI74evwUVIh/gUCbtIMX6JK/ qaxFyWtUGfLQNEv6ry1AIxlrL0hVLA41f1zdSi3bYB5YzqZLWArf8OyImOapZkfU9DvC qvhVS0KziEpMYWGkcORHS760FQQc+xGr33hUg= MIME-Version: 1.0 Received: by 10.216.188.197 with SMTP id a47mr2659624wen.70.1279657171529; Tue, 20 Jul 2010 13:19:31 -0700 (PDT) Received: by 10.216.187.70 with HTTP; Tue, 20 Jul 2010 13:19:31 -0700 (PDT) In-Reply-To: <201007201608.45614.tijl@coosemans.org> References: <201007201608.45614.tijl@coosemans.org> Date: Tue, 20 Jul 2010 22:19:31 +0200 Message-ID: From: =?ISO-8859-1?Q?Micka=EBl_Maillot?= To: Tijl Coosemans Content-Type: text/plain; charset=ISO-8859-1 Content-Transfer-Encoding: quoted-printable Cc: freebsd-emulation@freebsd.org Subject: Re: sc2 with wine on amd64 X-BeenThere: freebsd-emulation@freebsd.org X-Mailman-Version: 2.1.5 Precedence: list List-Id: Development of Emulators of other operating systems List-Unsubscribe: , List-Archive: List-Post: List-Help: List-Subscribe: , X-List-Received-Date: Tue, 20 Jul 2010 20:21:19 -0000 oh nice, all works fine with your patch. thanks Tijil 2010/7/20 Tijl Coosemans : > On Sunday 11 July 2010 12:17:23 Micka=EBl Maillot wrote: >> i try to play StarCraft 2 with wine on my amd64 8-STABLE desktop. >> first there is a patch to get the game working: >> http://freelooser.fr/freebsd/patch-dlls__wined3d__swapchain_base.c >> see bug: http://bugs.winehq.org/show_bug.cgi?id=3D23556 >> >> now the problem related to amd64, when i start the game with windbg: >> >> WineDbg starting on pid 0019 >> First chance exception: page fault on write access to 0x00370000 in >> 32-bit code (0x7e66468f). >> Register dump: >> =A0CS:0033 SS:003b DS:003b ES:003b FS:0013 GS:001b >> =A0EIP:7e66468f ESP:0034f930 EBP:0034f9b8 EFLAGS:00010a02( =A0R- --O I = =A0 - First of all, recent Intel Atom processors do not support Intel VT-x. According on the section of Troubleshooting of [1] it seems that VT-x is no needed, but according to [2] it seems that VT-x is needed for 64 bit guest. If this is correct, does it mean that in I'd be only able to install 32 bits guests in that machine? Even if I install FreeBSD-amd64? Another topic would be responsiveness, I know that Atom are not speedy, but has anyone used it to virtualize another Linux (with or without X11) and Windows (XP or 7)? Thank you very much! The older Atom CPU (single core @ 1.66GHz)is barely tolerable when it's running in native mode. You can forget about any sort of performance inside VirtualBox. Can't address the newer dual-core Atoms, but from I've read they're not suitable either. -- Gary Jennejohn From owner-freebsd-emulation@FreeBSD.ORG Fri Jul 23 06:15:36 2010 Return-Path: Delivered-To: freebsd-emulation@freebsd.org Received: from mx1.freebsd.org (mx1.freebsd.org [IPv6:2001:4f8:fff6::34]) by hub.freebsd.org (Postfix) with ESMTP id E30AA106566C for ; Fri, 23 Jul 2010 06:15:36 +0000 (UTC) (envelope-from tedm@mittelstaedt.us) Received: from mail.freebsd-corp-net-guide.com (mail.freebsd-corp-net-guide.com [65.75.192.90]) by mx1.freebsd.org (Postfix) with ESMTP id 1A68B8FC1A for ; Fri, 23 Jul 2010 06:15:35 +0000 (UTC) Received: from [192.168.1.202] (nat-rtr.freebsd-corp-net-guide.com [65.75.197.130]) by mail.freebsd-corp-net-guide.com (8.14.3/8.14.3) with ESMTP id o6N6FVuO028731 for ; Thu, 22 Jul 2010 23:15:33 -0700 (PDT) (envelope-from tedm@mittelstaedt.us) Message-ID: <4C493384.5050107@mittelstaedt.us> Date: Thu, 22 Jul 2010 23:15:32 -0700 From: Ted Mittelstaedt User-Agent: Mozilla/5.0 (Windows; U; Windows NT 5.1; en-US; rv:1.9.1.11) Gecko/20100711 Thunderbird/3.0.6 MIME-Version: 1.0 To: freebsd-emulation@freebsd.org References: In-Reply-To: Content-Type: text/plain; charset=ISO-8859-1; format=flowed Content-Transfer-Encoding: 7bit X-Greylist: Sender IP whitelisted, not delayed by milter-greylist-4.2.2 (mail.freebsd-corp-net-guide.com [65.75.192.90]); Thu, 22 Jul 2010 23:15:33 -0700 (PDT) Subject: Re: VirtualBox for FreeBSD in an Intel Atom processor X-BeenThere: freebsd-emulation@freebsd.org X-Mailman-Version: 2.1.5 Precedence: list List-Id: Development of Emulators of other operating systems List-Unsubscribe: , List-Archive: List-Post: List-Help: List-Subscribe: , X-List-Received-Date: Fri, 23 Jul 2010 06:15:37 -0000 On 7/22/2010 3:24 AM, Harald Servat wrote: > Hello list, > > I'm planning to buy an Intel Atom based computer and install FreeBSD > (probably 8.1) on it, and II was wondering which are my options to run > VirtualBox. > > First of all, recent Intel Atom processors do not support Intel VT-x. > According on the section of Troubleshooting of [1] it seems that VT-x is no > needed, but according to [2] it seems that VT-x is needed for 64 bit guest. > If this is correct, does it mean that in I'd be only able to install 32 bits > guests in that machine? The CPU is a 2.5Ghz Intel Celeron E3300. I put a spare 1GB stick of ram in it I had lying around. The board itself is a clone BTC I think. I split the disk into a 1GB Windows XP partition and FreeBSD 8 for the rest of it. This runs a session of XP in a VirtualBox that is literally just as fast as XP running natively on the same box. You cannot tell the difference. In fact, in some cases I think the XP session under virtualization runs -faster-. I use the XP session to run Vsphere Client since I manage some ESXi servers. I personally think you could do better than the Atom. Ted
