Ok. I'm still wondering why geom_mbr should not be included in /boot/loader.conf. Would you tell me why? Thanks. >> I need geom_mbr module due to my some of usb thumb >> drivers. > > Why? What doesn't work if you don't have it? When I plug a usb thumb drive, there's no /dev/da0s1device node. If I load geom_mbr.ko, then /dev/da0s1 appears. Regards, Dave. Because of just that - you can't mix geom_part and geom_mbr because they do the same thing, and gpart is the utility for interfacing with geom_part. >>> I need geom_mbr module due to my some of usb thumb >>> drivers. >> >> Why? This almost certainly indicates a problem somewhere else, not in geom_part. You need to provide more details: what kernel messages do you get when geom_mbr is not loaded? It lets the partition start at 1 MB offset, which is of course aligned to 4k. 1 MB is also standard in Windows, I think, although I'm not sure why. I usually let the first partition start at 64K, because the fdisk(1) default is a "geometry" with 63 sectors per track, so I let the first partition start at sector 65 in the first slice (63 + 65 = 128 sectors = 64Kb). By using a fragment size of 4KB with the newfs command, you make sure that there will be no misaligned accesses. Regarding your mentioning of "performance": You are aware that the WD "green" drives are pretty slow, aren't you? If you need good performance, you can get much faster drives for just a few Dollars/Euros/whatever more. Best regards Oliver -- Oliver Fromme, secnetix GmbH & Co. KG, Marktplatz 29, 85567 Grafing b. It's been a while I think this is the ultimate bug I was seeing: $ geom --help usage: geom --help help geom --help list [name ...] geom --help status [-s] [name ...] geom --help load [-v] geom --help unload [-v] $ uname -a FreeBSD bioshock.cisco.com 9.0-CURRENT FreeBSD 9.0-CURRENT #2 r206173: Tue May 25 13:21:21 PDT 2010 root@bioshock.cisco.com:/usr/obj/usr/src/sys/BIOSHOCK amd64 Note how it's not parsing the class to see whether or not it's valid, and is just producing non-sensical output. Ultimately geom(8) should: 1. Parse out the class and determine whether or not it's valid. 2. Provide the help specific to that class. The recursive logic is just complicated and unnecessary (IMO) more than anything else. Once upon a time someone said that this command (geom) was going away and only subclass commands were going to be available, so I'm not sure whether or not that particular datapoint is factored in with the issue I reported in this bug.
