I have hjome storage server, which is equipped with 6 HDDs (one with system and five for geom_raid5 in SuperMicro SATA hot-swap cage). I need add more HDDs :) What is better: PICe SATA controller or SATA port multiplier? Is here SATA port multipliers for internal installation? Which PCIe controllers (pure controllers, I don't want to pay additional money for soft-RAID and I don't have budget for true SATA RAID) works best with FreeBSD? Maybe, here is good-but-not-too-expensive hotswap cages with port multipliers (my one have 5 SATA connectors on backplane for 5 HDDs)? --=20 // Black Lion AKA Lev Serebryakov From owner-freebsd-hardware@FreeBSD.ORG Wed May 12 18:41:49 2010 Return-Path: Delivered-To: freebsd-hardware@freebsd.org Received: from mx1.freebsd.org (mx1.freebsd.org [IPv6:2001:4f8:fff6::34]) by hub.freebsd.org (Postfix) with ESMTP id 023211065670; Wed, 12 May 2010 18:41:49 +0000 (UTC) (envelope-from andre@wensing.org) Received: from mail.wensing.org (wensing.xs4all.nl [80.101.217.189]) by mx1.freebsd.org (Postfix) with ESMTP id ABF668FC15; Wed, 12 May 2010 18:41:48 +0000 (UTC) Received: from ares.wensing.org (localhost [127.0.0.1]) by mail.wensing.org (Postfix) with ESMTP id 1742B171E4; Wed, 12 May 2010 20:24:46 +0200 (CEST) X-Virus-Scanned: amavisd-new at wensing.org Received: from mail.wensing.org ([127.0.0.1]) by ares.wensing.org (ares.wensing.org [127.0.0.1]) (amavisd-new, port 10024) with LMTP id kodjgM8OD68W; Wed, 12 May 2010 20:24:42 +0200 (CEST) Received: from [192.168.1.14] (atlas.wensing.org [192.168.1.14]) by mail.wensing.org (Postfix) with ESMTPA id CACAC17073; Wed, 12 May 2010 20:24:42 +0200 (CEST) Message-ID: <4BEAF26A.8050900@wensing.org> Date: Wed, 12 May 2010 20:24:42 +0200 From: Andre Wensing User-Agent: Thunderbird 2.0.0.24 (X11/20100317) MIME-Version: 1.0 To: lev@FreeBSD.org References: <386700559.20100512213725@serebryakov.spb.ru> In-Reply-To: <386700559.20100512213725@serebryakov.spb.ru> Content-Type: text/plain; charset=windows-1251; format=flowed Content-Transfer-Encoding: 7bit Cc: freebsd-hardware@freebsd.org Subject: Re: Add more HDDs to system based on ICH10R: PICe SATA controller vs SATA port muiltiplier X-BeenThere: freebsd-hardware@freebsd.org X-Mailman-Version: 2.1.5 Precedence: list List-Id: General discussion of FreeBSD hardware List-Unsubscribe: , List-Archive: List-Post: List-Help: List-Subscribe: , X-List-Received-Date: Wed, 12 May 2010 18:41:49 -0000 For what i've read so far: there's a Supermicro card that seems to work, but it's apparently a reversed card of some sort. That is the one of the few non-RAID card that is supported under FreeBSD besides some Sil-chipset-based ones. The Adaptec ASC-1405 (and Areca's 1300i as well) are both non-RAID cards based on Marvell's 88SE6440-chip, but there is no driver-support for these cards. I have the Adaptec-card, and am hoping that this chip will get support in FreeBSD. Areca has put on their website that the driver for FreeBSD will be made available somewehere in Q1/Q2 of 2010 (just like Adaptec, they claim FreeBSD-support on the box and in their marketing but haven't got a driver, although the card has some support from the Linux-community). I haven't found any decent card yet with more than 2 SATA-ports that have FreeBSD-support that aren't RAID-cards (at least in NL) Lev Serebryakov wrote: > Hello, Freebsd-hardware. > > I have hjome storage server, which is equipped with 6 HDDs (one with > system and five for geom_raid5 in SuperMicro SATA hot-swap cage). > I need add more HDDs :) > > What is better: PICe SATA controller or SATA port multiplier? > > Is here SATA port multipliers for internal installation? > > Which PCIe controllers (pure controllers, I don't want to pay > additional money for soft-RAID and I don't have budget for true SATA > RAID) works best with FreeBSD? > > Maybe, here is good-but-not-too-expensive hotswap cages with port > multipliers (my one have 5 SATA connectors on backplane for 5 > HDDs)? > > From owner-freebsd-hardware@FreeBSD.ORG Wed May 12 19:00:14 2010 Return-Path: Delivered-To: freebsd-hardware@freebsd.org Received: from mx1.freebsd.org (mx1.freebsd.org [IPv6:2001:4f8:fff6::34]) by hub.freebsd.org (Postfix) with ESMTP id E89051065672; Wed, 12 May 2010 19:00:14 +0000 (UTC) (envelope-from lev@FreeBSD.org) Received: from ftp.translate.ru (ftp.translate.ru [80.249.188.42]) by mx1.freebsd.org (Postfix) with ESMTP id A1D2F8FC16; Wed, 12 May 2010 19:00:14 +0000 (UTC) Received: from desktop.home.serebryakov.spb.ru (85-142-52-164.well-com.net [85.142.52.164]) (Authenticated sender: lev@serebryakov.spb.ru) by ftp.translate.ru (Postfix) with ESMTPA id 6DF3C13DF46; Wed, 12 May 2010 23:00:13 +0400 (MSD) Date: Wed, 12 May 2010 23:00:12 +0400 From: Lev Serebryakov Organization: FreeBSD X-Priority: 3 (Normal) Message-ID: <578446328.20100512230012@serebryakov.spb.ru> To: Andre Wensing In-Reply-To: <4BEAF26A.8050900@wensing.org> References: <386700559.20100512213725@serebryakov.spb.ru> <4BEAF26A.8050900@wensing.org> MIME-Version: 1.0 Content-Type: text/plain; charset=windows-1251 Content-Transfer-Encoding: quoted-printable Cc: lev@FreeBSD.org, freebsd-hardware@freebsd.org Subject: Re: Add more HDDs to system based on ICH10R: PICe SATA controller vs SATA port muiltiplier X-BeenThere: freebsd-hardware@freebsd.org X-Mailman-Version: 2.1.5 Precedence: list Reply-To: lev@FreeBSD.org List-Id: General discussion of FreeBSD hardware List-Unsubscribe: , List-Archive: List-Post: List-Help: List-Subscribe: , X-List-Received-Date: Wed, 12 May 2010 19:00:15 -0000 Hello, Andre. You're probably talking about Supermicro's "UIO" card, which is a PCI-E card with the bracket mounted backwards. The normal non-reversed version of that is the LSI SAS 3081E-R and 3041E-R. There's two sets of firmware, one that does really minimalist RAID, and one that's just a straight-up host adapter. Either way, it uses the mpt driver. I remember the 3081E-R was once right around $200 but I can't find it that cheap anymore, maybe because the 6Gbit LSI 9211 line came out to replace it... which IS still under $300 but I don't know if FreeBSD supports it. How many more disks do you want to hook up? How many PCIe slots are you willing to use for this, and how many lanes do they have? Better? A controller can be faster, but uses up a slot. A port multiplier doesn't require a slot (although you can get one that does) but total throughput is limited by the uplink. Of course a x1 slot is also limited, and the controller might not be fast enough to max it out. If you go the PM route, make sure the controller you have supports PMs, not all do. And make sure FreeBSD supports PMs for the controller, FreeBSD only got PM support in 8.0. > Is here SATA port multipliers for internal installation? Addonics makes SATA port multipliers that fit a cutout meant for a SCSI connector. If your case doesn't have this type of cutout, then depending on your case and your tolerance for kludges, you might be able to fasten one inside somewhere, providing you can keep it from shorting out. If you're into metalworking you could add a cutout. Addonics also makes PMs in a standalone external box. Addonics makes SATA port multipliers that go in an expansion slot. Also Photofast has a similar card. Lian-Li has a PCIe-x1 card with a JMB362 2 port controller and a JMicron JMB393 SATA port multiplier. http://www.addonics.com/products/pm/ http://www.semiaccurate.com/2009/12/31/lian-li-vs-photofast-pcie-x1-raid-c= ontrollers/ > Which PCIe controllers (pure controllers, I don't want to=20 pay > additional money for soft-RAID and I don't have budget for true SATA > RAID) works best with FreeBSD? Almost everything with more than 1 port is going to claim to have RAID, even controllers costing under US$20. I haven't heard of any=20 controllers that can't do JBOD. Sil 3132 (PCIe-x1 2 SATA drives) cards work well with siis(4) driver. JMB363 (PCIe-x1 2 SATA drives + 1 PATA channel) cards work with ahci(4)=20 driver. JMB363 is faster than Sil3132 but my Syba brand JMB363 cards have been=20 trouble. Try a different brand. Both 3132 and 363 are available on cards with=20 both internal and external connectors, with jumpers to route the signals to=20 the connector you wish to use. A nice feature, just don't be fooled when it says "4 ports". In message <4B027C3E.7020700@FreeBSD.org>, Alexander Motin writes: > >>>>> - SiI3124-based - fast and functional. If you like the SiI3124 chip and have a x8 slot available there is this: http://www.cooldrives.com/4expcmaca.html > Maybe, here is good-but-not-too-expensive hotswap cages with port > multipliers (my one have 5 SATA connectors on backplane for 5 > HDDs)? http://www.lian-li.com/v2/en/product/product04.php?cl_index=3D12&sc_index= =3D42&ss_index=3D115 http://www.addonics.com/products/enclosures/default.asp http://www.addonics.com/products/raid_system/ast4.asp The Addonics has more configuration options than the Lian-Li, you can get it with or without a PM, with or without hotswap, etc. Both are more expensive than they should be. Pointers to other external enclosure options would be welcome. Does anyone have recommendations for/against specific port multiplers? Do they all work well with FreeBSD? Is one faster than the others? Can they saturate the uplink, or do they suffer from the same slowness as the 3123 and 363 controllers? So far I have found: Sil 3726 JMB393 Marvel 88SM4140 Any others? http://www.addonics.com/products/host_controller/tutorial_pm.asp indicates that the JMB393 has more features than the Sil 3726, although I think I can live without those features. I haven't found any products using the Marvel chip. I was hoping someone would have a port multiplier with a 600 MB/s uplink by now?
