Full story: I purchased an Acer Travelmate 8371 and an external USB DVD burner as the 8371 does not have an optical drive. I started the box, and Windows asked me to finish the installation. Needless to say that I refused. I turned off the box, plugged in the DVD drive, and fiddled with the BIOS to allow me to boot from the DVD drive. In went a Knoppix CD (a live Linux CD) which started up fine. dmesg told me that it recognized all essential components of the laptop. Next I put in the FreeBSD 8.1 netinstall CD and rebooted. The installation of the basics went fine and showed no problems. I was bold enough to use the entire hard drive as the FreeBSD slice. This may be important as this may have removed any magic that Acer had put onto this drive (there were a bunch of partitions and non-assigned areas, only two of them NTFS partitions). In any case, when I attempted to reboot into the installed FreeBSD, the box no longer made it past the initial Acer splash screen. Neither F2 (edit BIOS settings) nor F12 (boot device menu) are responsive, only Ctl+Alt+Del and the power switch do have any effect. This left me with a brick, as none of the remedies that Google suggested (things like take out battery, unplug power cord, press mains switch for 30 sec, reattach power cord and boot) would get this box past the initial splash screen. Did anyone run into similar problems before? Is there any possibility that the box was indeed bricked by installing FreeBSD, or did I experience a bad hair day? any help is appreciated Markus -- Markus Hoenicka http://www.mhoenicka.de AQ score 38 From owner-freebsd-mobile@FreeBSD.ORG Thu Nov 11 13:12:16 2010 Return-Path: Delivered-To: freebsd-mobile@freebsd.org Received: from mx1.freebsd.org (mx1.freebsd.org [IPv6:2001:4f8:fff6::34]) by hub.freebsd.org (Postfix) with ESMTP id 487D0106566B for ; Thu, 11 Nov 2010 13:12:16 +0000 (UTC) (envelope-from uffe@uffe.org) Received: from mail.starion.dk (mx0.starion.dk [83.95.112.88]) by mx1.freebsd.org (Postfix) with SMTP id 9D15C8FC16 for ; Thu, 11 Nov 2010 13:12:15 +0000 (UTC) Received: (qmail 19840 invoked by uid 528); 11 Nov 2010 13:12:35 -0000 Received: from 212.130.59.4 ([212.130.59.4]) by mail.starion.dk ([192.168.0.100]) with ESMTP via TCP; 11 Nov 2010 13:12:35 -0000 Message-ID: <4CDBEBAD.7080505@uffe.org> Date: Thu, 11 Nov 2010 14:12:13 +0100 From: Uffe Jakobsen User-Agent: Mozilla/5.0 (Macintosh; U; Intel Mac OS X 10.6; en-US; rv:1.9.1.10) Gecko/20100512 Thunderbird/3.0.5 Mnenhy/0.7.6.0 MIME-Version: 1.0 To: freebsd-mobile@freebsd.org References: <20101111132141.49592qovwxlndt4w@webmail.df.eu> In-Reply-To: <20101111132141.49592qovwxlndt4w@webmail.df.eu> Content-Type: text/plain; charset=ISO-8859-1; format=flowed Content-Transfer-Encoding: 7bit Subject: Re: Acer Travelmate 8371 bricked by installing FreeBSD? During initial installation I've expierienced something similar with my Acer system... My guess is that if you remove/unplug your HDD - it will not hang anymore... The workaround for me was to remove the disk - go into the bios - and configure the sata emulation from ahci mode to ide "legacy/compatible" mode - or whatever they called it in the bios (I've no access to the notebook right now) After that you can put back the HDD and boot again - and it should work. I'd almost forgot about this problem since it is 6 months ago. My suspicion at that time was around the FBSD BootManager that I have installed - but I never got around to isolate (and report) the problem... Question: did you install the FBSD BootManager or just a std MBR ? I hope it helps. I loathe removing the HDD as I'm not exactly sure how to get it out without damaging the case - removing the two obvious screws was not enough to remove the HDD lid. Damaging the case will make it hard to return the laptop (I can return it within 14 days of purchase). Come to think of it, it doesn't really make sense on this laptop though. Can't recall whether it was a netbook or mid-size Extensa, but at least one Acer I've used with FreeBSD had a first partition that was required for the BIOS. Don't know if it was loading the entire BIOS from the disk like Compaq in the old days, or whether it's just some other data. The net effect was that wiping out the first partition caused it to stop at boot. It's been long enough now that I can't recall how I restored the drive; may have taken it out and connected to another machine. The restore was just an original image of the drive, which I always do (and suggest) before allowing the system a first boot. Clonezilla is great for this. Besides the first partition, there was a restore partition and a working partition, both NTFS. A guitar pick or similar thick plastic like a credit card can help unsnap them without scarring the case. With the HDD set to IDE mode, FreeBSD would boot without a hitch. Anyway, I reinstalled the system, this time using the standard boot manager, to make sure this setting was all it takes. The second install would also boot just fine, so now I'm all set to work out the remaining issues. I'll probably have to tap into your ingenuity again, but I'll do so in a separate thread. > > I have no proof at this point - but I suspect the FBSD BootManager to be > the one to blame when used in combination with the ahci sata emulation > setting... but I'm by no means an expert in these things - and I did > never get to the bottom of the problem... > I can't add much information here either. However, with the HDD mode set to IDE it does not matter which boot loader you use. Both the standard loader and the FreeBSD loader work fine. To sum up this thread, this is the proper way to install FreeBSD on a Travelmate 8371: 1) during the initial splash screen, hit F2 to enter BIOS setup 2) enable the boot menu 3) set the HDD mode from AHCI to IDE 4) reboot with a Clonezilla stick or CD to clone the HDD contents, in case you need to go back to the default state 5) reboot with your favourite FreeBSD install medium And this is the proper way if you missed step 3): 1) turn the laptop upside down 2) loosen the two obvious screws of the HDD lid. They are secured by retainers, so they won't come off entirely 3) use gentle force to lift up the lid, e.g. by means of a plastic credit card. The lid is clipped in on three sides. 4) remove the HDD 5) switch on the box and hit F2 to enter BIOS setup 6) set the HDD mode from AHCI to IDE 7) switch off the box 8) put the HDD back into place and close the lid 9) switch on the box and, lo and behold, it is going to boot again thanks again to all who provided their input. regards, Markus -- Markus Hoenicka http://www.mhoenicka.de AQ score 38 From owner-freebsd-mobile@FreeBSD.ORG Fri Nov 12 01:04:16 2010 Return-Path: Delivered-To: freebsd-mobile@freebsd.org Received: from mx1.freebsd.org (mx1.freebsd.org [IPv6:2001:4f8:fff6::34]) by hub.freebsd.org (Postfix) with ESMTP id 8F47C106566B for ; Fri, 12 Nov 2010 01:04:16 +0000 (UTC) (envelope-from mavbsd@gmail.com) Received: from mail-bw0-f54.google.com (mail-bw0-f54.google.com [209.85.214.54]) by mx1.freebsd.org (Postfix) with ESMTP id 153BD8FC13 for ; Fri, 12 Nov 2010 01:04:15 +0000 (UTC) Received: by bwz2 with SMTP id 2so2553463bwz.13 for ; Thu, 11 Nov 2010 17:04:15 -0800 (PST) DKIM-Signature: v=1; a=rsa-sha256; c=relaxed/relaxed; d=gmail.com; s=gamma; h=domainkey-signature:received:received:sender:message-id:date:from :user-agent:mime-version:to:subject:x-enigmail-version:content-type :content-transfer-encoding; bh=yPK3bcEHvQsrRojmaSK6JZf2r/KKBjxl35yVvM7S2nY=; b=KVhlnOOVNGRf2AdfMQ0HTyXLkiP/6YUWKsygWr9l5KgjbX6+dIm/a2b/lKHpcB9ktd gqoQiH8ExWnYP/go0v0UCtPnh8EzutUveM21YEW3S6HuYwtEIs3GPKO4ajth15KKCKpr 8N7qBIVqGgDiyyy34nttG5D/B5s1092vZYkwc= DomainKey-Signature: a=rsa-sha1; c=nofws; d=gmail.com; s=gamma; h=sender:message-id:date:from:user-agent:mime-version:to:subject :x-enigmail-version:content-type:content-transfer-encoding; b=YmvanjxBvK9K/tW1h5k06Odrl0Oip4Nt4Pv3vVHPq9R7vwTiqzUUA1kOaAD/OtuqjH tlo7czn9lXCdgnEN8aMfH0ojtaQ+UFuqgIqjxCkgSZ2m69ChD7dFY3iFCgDcVAyrur7t Za37bbsKgBPRCdGp37+S4sQ4hmFUj5XJlmMr8= Received: by 10.204.69.73 with SMTP id y9mr2071234bki.76.1289522455917; Thu, 11 Nov 2010 16:40:55 -0800 (PST) Received: from mavbook2.mavhome.dp.ua (pc.mavhome.dp.ua [212.86.226.226]) by mx.google.com with ESMTPS id p34sm1240689bkf.3.2010.11.11.16.40.54 (version=SSLv3 cipher=RC4-MD5); Thu, 11 Nov 2010 16:40:55 -0800 (PST) Sender: Alexander Motin Message-ID: <4CDC8CFC.8040402@FreeBSD.org> Date: Fri, 12 Nov 2010 02:40:28 +0200 From: Alexander Motin User-Agent: Thunderbird 2.0.0.23 (X11/20091212) MIME-Version: 1.0 To: FreeBSD Stable , freebsd-mobile@freebsd.org X-Enigmail-Version: 0.96.0 Content-Type: text/plain; charset=KOI8-R Content-Transfer-Encoding: 7bit Cc: Subject: New event timers for 8-STABLE X-BeenThere: freebsd-mobile@freebsd.org X-Mailman-Version: 2.1.5 Precedence: list List-Id: Mobile computing with FreeBSD List-Unsubscribe: , List-Archive: List-Post: List-Help: List-Subscribe: , X-List-Received-Date: Fri, 12 Nov 2010 01:04:16 -0000 Hi. I've created a patch, merging all kernel event timers related stuff from HEAD to 8-STABLE. The only thing I have skipped at this moment was mips architecture, because of too big code difference there between HEAD and 8-STABLE. Patch appeared to be quite large and includes more then 60 SVN revisions from HEAD. I hope I haven't missed anything important. I would like to ask interested people to test it. Patched code successfully builds on all platforms and successfully runs on my amd64 test machine. In HEAD code seems to be working enough stable, There only two known open issues at the moment: - kernel freeze on XEN HVM when using LAPIC timer in one-shot mode -- can be workarounded by switching to periodic mode or other timer. - if HPET interrupt shared with other device, system load average may lie (report +1 value) -- not a timer problem and not fatal. Please report me if you find anything else. Latest patch can be found here: http://people.freebsd.org/~mav/timers_merge/timers_merge-20101111.patch Merge instructions (list of revisions, if somebody want to redo it): http://people.freebsd.org/~mav/timers_merge/guide-20101111 After patching you need just rebuild/reinstall the kernel. I haven't merged related manual pages yet, so, if needed, consult with man pages from HEAD: eventtimers(7), attimer(4), atrtc(4), hpet(4). -- Alexander Motin From owner-freebsd-mobile@FreeBSD.ORG Fri Nov 12 05:02:42 2010 Return-Path: Delivered-To: freebsd-mobile@freebsd.org Received: from mx1.freebsd.org (mx1.freebsd.org [IPv6:2001:4f8:fff6::34]) by hub.freebsd.org (Postfix) with ESMTP id A39A0106564A for ; Fri, 12 Nov 2010 05:02:42 +0000 (UTC) (envelope-from jamesbrandongooch@gmail.com) Received: from mail-wy0-f182.google.com (mail-wy0-f182.google.com [74.125.82.182]) by mx1.freebsd.org (Postfix) with ESMTP id 3629B8FC14 for ; Fri, 12 Nov 2010 05:02:41 +0000 (UTC) Received: by wya21 with SMTP id 21so438239wya.13 for ; Thu, 11 Nov 2010 21:02:41 -0800 (PST) DKIM-Signature: v=1; a=rsa-sha256; c=relaxed/relaxed; d=gmail.com; s=gamma; h=domainkey-signature:mime-version:received:received:in-reply-to :references:date:message-id:subject:from:to:cc:content-type :content-transfer-encoding; bh=y8G/EoJ2u8nb7BJHEgptIWROSR5lfNRsaw3Edsq6ojI=; b=WhvFOjUU2D9LoXkQwIVZES6rPcMQyZcffZbOQbbTawO4jM/43NEqtjFmjoKmMufaT7 UBQ1AZjL1rGSjAEzSu3Zx8NkGG3UVr2lcB9W3QLs+Hb53mT7955d3cbvMIw1Nhz/x6b/ FXC9gfboVoCntrDRbQs82LRgJ4FpEtDchDuUw= DomainKey-Signature: a=rsa-sha1; c=nofws; d=gmail.com; s=gamma; h=mime-version:in-reply-to:references:date:message-id:subject:from:to :cc:content-type:content-transfer-encoding; b=ny2JApwsorak8Z7wfnabGXchyXb7nQZwaWaQkCTVnj9fPxgimUtVDt1luXfbN2T3Xq 3Rv11IFusuxsXztuRHWcMgWFpajD+vhs5TtJdFsRAT2o0DTCOB/1e7YEDyvC+QYhGgZx BfvF/8hB3bhZBdttBSSLKQsEQV5C0qMfjUI4k= MIME-Version: 1.0 Received: by 10.216.154.131 with SMTP id h3mr3114772wek.74.1289536582420; Thu, 11 Nov 2010 20:36:22 -0800 (PST) Received: by 10.216.12.80 with HTTP; Thu, 11 Nov 2010 20:36:22 -0800 (PST) In-Reply-To: <4CDC8CFC.8040402@FreeBSD.org> References: <4CDC8CFC.8040402@FreeBSD.org> Date: Thu, 11 Nov 2010 22:36:22 -0600 Message-ID: From: Brandon Gooch To: Alexander Motin Content-Type: text/plain; charset=ISO-8859-1 Content-Transfer-Encoding: quoted-printable Cc: FreeBSD Stable , freebsd-mobile@freebsd.org Subject: Re: New event timers for 8-STABLE X-BeenThere: freebsd-mobile@freebsd.org X-Mailman-Version: 2.1.5 Precedence: list List-Id: Mobile computing with FreeBSD List-Unsubscribe: , List-Archive: List-Post: List-Help: List-Subscribe: , X-List-Received-Date: Fri, 12 Nov 2010 05:02:42 -0000 2010/11/11 Alexander Motin : > Hi. > > I've created a patch, merging all kernel event timers related stuff from > HEAD to 8-STABLE. I'll add an entry as soon as I have worked out the kinks. I had to build a custom kernel yesterday in order to get access to wifi and sound. I still don't see Bluetooth, the card reader, and the webcam, but I have never had any need for one of these. Although I removed from the config everything that seemed unnecessary to me, installing the new kernel almost completely filled the / partition (107%!). The kernel works ok though, so I'm almost set. I'll just have to redo the installation and increase the size of /. It's a bit strange because I used here whatever the installer suggested (I only increased /tmp as I had run out of space here on another box), so even if your HDD is 500 GB, the default is way too small. Would that qualify as a bug report? In any case, I'll make sure to have the kernel config, /boot/loader.conf, /etc/rc.conf, and /etc/X11/xorg.conf (unless Xorg works automagically) handy before publishing the entry in the laptop compatibility list. With a bit of luck I'll be done this weekend. regards, Markus -- Markus Hoenicka http://www.mhoenicka.de AQ score 38 From owner-freebsd-mobile@FreeBSD.ORG Fri Nov 12 13:03:57 2010 Return-Path: Delivered-To: freebsd-mobile@freebsd.org Received: from mx1.freebsd.org (mx1.freebsd.org [IPv6:2001:4f8:fff6::34]) by hub.freebsd.org (Postfix) with ESMTP id 4476A106566B for ; Fri, 12 Nov 2010 13:03:57 +0000 (UTC) (envelope-from guru@unixarea.de) Received: from ms16-1.1blu.de (ms16-1.1blu.de [89.202.0.34]) by mx1.freebsd.org (Postfix) with ESMTP id 673888FC13 for ; Fri, 12 Nov 2010 13:03:56 +0000 (UTC) Received: from [193.31.11.193] (helo=current.Sisis.de) by ms16-1.1blu.de with esmtpsa (TLS-1.0:DHE_RSA_AES_256_CBC_SHA1:32) (Exim 4.69) (envelope-from ) id 1PGtII-0002qk-8x for freebsd-mobile@freebsd.org; Fri, 12 Nov 2010 14:03:54 +0100 Received: from current.Sisis.de (current [127.0.0.1]) by current.Sisis.de (8.14.3/8.14.3) with ESMTP id oACD3ooq003688 for ; Fri, 12 Nov 2010 14:03:50 +0100 (CET) (envelope-from guru@unixarea.de) Received: (from guru@localhost) by current.Sisis.de (8.14.3/8.14.3/Submit) id oACD3oT4003687 for freebsd-mobile@freebsd.org; Fri, 12 Nov 2010 14:03:50 +0100 (CET) (envelope-from guru@unixarea.de) X-Authentication-Warning: current.Sisis.de: guru set sender to guru@unixarea.de using -f Date: Fri, 12 Nov 2010 14:03:49 +0100 From: Matthias Apitz To: freebsd-mobile@freebsd.org Message-ID: <20101112130349.GA3632@current.Sisis.de> MIME-Version: 1.0 Content-Type: text/plain; charset=iso-8859-1 Content-Disposition: inline Content-Transfer-Encoding: 8bit X-Operating-System: FreeBSD 8.0-CURRENT (i386) User-Agent: Mutt/1.5.19 (2009-01-05) X-Con-Id: 51246 X-Originating-IP: 193.31.11.193 Subject: snd_hda(4) && audio recording problems with Acer Aspire One D250 / EeePC 900 X-BeenThere: freebsd-mobile@freebsd.org X-Mailman-Version: 2.1.5 Precedence: list Reply-To: Matthias Apitz List-Id: Mobile computing with FreeBSD List-Unsubscribe: , List-Archive: List-Post: List-Help: List-Subscribe: , X-List-Received-Date: Fri, 12 Nov 2010 13:03:57 -0000 Hello, I own two netbooks: EeePC 900 and now an Acer Aspire One D250; both have problems with audio recording via snd_hda(4): - the EeePC records only from the build-in mic and does not record from Jack; - the Acer Aspire One D250 does not record from build-in mic, only from Jack; any ideas? someone managed it to get recording from both mic's in one of the above netbooks? more details below... I have another mini laptop, for years already, an EeePC 900 in which the internal mic works fine. I thought it would be a good idea to look in detail what the diff is between, because both are using snd_hda(4) for sound. It turned out, surprise I never realized this, that the EeePC has the same problem, but the other way around: only the internal mic is recording and the jack does not.
