I pointed out in -questions that a re-install of some ATI bits was necessary to have a working X install; then Seamonkey started crashing; and now I find (having decided to check a variety of applications) that Grip also falls over and dumps core about one second after start.. Also, that whole "users of math/libgmp4 should have no problems using portupgrade" thing was not trouble free, as indicated in the 20100419: AFFECTS: users of math/libgmp4 note in UPDATING. I had to do things manually (make deinstall libgmp4, make install gmp) to update that port: the use of portupgrade failed. I have no idea if this is related to the X issue. Applications did not crash prior to the X upgrade; and that upgrade did not go well on: FreeBSD whisperer.chthonixia.net 8.0-RELEASE-p2 FreeBSD 8.0-RELEASE-p2 #0: Sat May 15 11:47:55 EDT 2010 root@whisperer.chthonixia.net:/usr/obj/usr/src/sys/WHISPERER amd64 That is all. Plain xterm is okay, but as soon as I interact with a GTK1 or GTK2 application, I can no longer input anything. Mouse clicks and keyboard input go nowhere, nothing is in focus and I can't bring anything into focus. This may be related to the problem in the "Xorg 7.5 and Openmotif applications" thread. The xorg-server patch mentioned there doesn't fix it, though. Sorry for the cross-post. Gnome 2.30 is working fine as is X. The one problem is that the screensaver locks the screen, but will not ever prompt for input. I just see the screen pattern appear for an instant and the screen goes back to black. I'm sure I had the same issue at some time in the past, but I just can't remember the details. The only message I see in the logs is: gnome-session[30429]: WARNING: Unable to determine session: Unable to lookup session information for process '30429' It looks like I get one of these every time the system starts to bring up the unlock screen. And if I had more information about what appears to originate in the X upgrade, I would offer it. I managed to fix, on my own, the issue with the failure to load the video drivers and thought that would be the end of it. Not so. I only know that suddenly, at least two applications are crashing. My post to -questions basically asks if anyone else is seeing the same issue; so far, no one else seems to be seeing the issue with Seamonkey. I have no idea if it's an issue for the FreeBSD maintainers; the Seamonkey maintainers; or the X maintainers. Seamonkey has not changed in some time; X has. So I suspect it's the X maintainers, most likely, that will need to investigate and push relevant changes downstream to FreeBSD. Or does it work some other way? For the record: I do not want to slam the FreeBSD maintainers of X. I'd rather not spend my time second-guessing them, either. I do think that (and it seems you may somewhat agree, based on your comments about quality since 6.x) moving forward, a somewhat jaundiced eye might be the one to direct toward future "upgrades" to X on FreeBSD. I think that the number of trouble reports with this basic subject: "I upgraded X and now I have no GUI/mouse/keyboard" might support my opinion. I can understand (and have lived with) non-critical things failing; but it seems that Intel and ATI GPUs are not non-critical. > Note that there was a "call for testing" for Xorg 7.5 in mid-March > which allowed some of the rough edges to be corrected before it was > actually committed. Interesting. Yet, somehow, the rough edges of failure to load video drivers for what appears to be multiple ATI and Intel GPUs were not detected. By anyone. That seems to be a rather wide rough edge. But I could be very, very wrong. Was there a security issue leading to this "upgrade" of X on FreeBSD? I see no security notices about 7.4 at Xorg. I do see some about 7.3. If security was not an issue, then I hope it is not decided that it was a case of seeing something shiny that led to the decision to upgrade X on FreeBSD. IMO, the trailing edge is a comfortable place. But I can understand the pressure that might be applied to maintainers by early adopters of new shininess. > You might like to consider taking part in similar testing in future. Doubtful. Seeing as how there have been recent sweeping changes to jpeg, xorg, and now GNOME and KDE, it would be nice to verify exactly where the problem lies. A failed upgrade might be at fault, or even a successful one. pkg_libchk from the sysutils/bsdadminscripts port is worth running. >> Note that there was a "call for testing" for Xorg 7.5 in mid-March >> which allowed some of the rough edges to be corrected before it was >> actually committed. >> >> You might like to consider taking part in similar testing in future. > > Doubtful. That would require multiple machines. Or multiple hard drives. Or even just an additional partition for a test install. The nice thing about prerelease testing is that it gives you an early warning if there's a compatibility issue with your actual hardware. -Warren Block * Rapid City, South Dakota USA From owner-freebsd-x11@FreeBSD.ORG Tue May 18 17:21:17 2010 Return-Path: Delivered-To: freebsd-x11@freebsd.org Received: from mx1.freebsd.org (mx1.freebsd.org [IPv6:2001:4f8:fff6::34]) by hub.freebsd.org (Postfix) with ESMTP id 2B2271065673 for ; Tue, 18 May 2010 17:21:17 +0000 (UTC) (envelope-from freebsd-announce@chthonic.com) Received: from chanas.pair.com (chanas.pair.com [209.68.2.166]) by mx1.freebsd.org (Postfix) with SMTP id D81F88FC1B for ; Tue, 18 May 2010 17:21:16 +0000 (UTC) Received: (qmail 53359 invoked by uid 3329); 18 May 2010 17:21:15 -0000 Date: Tue, 18 May 2010 13:21:15 -0400 From: "J. X crashes as soon as OpenGL desktop effects are enabled. This also happens on the initial KDE4 start when DRI is enabled in xorg.conf, apparently KDE auto-detects OpenGL capability and tries to enable the effects. I do not understand overall application logic, but in local code context I see that intelObj->mt is only accessed when intelObj->imageOverride is false. The place where crash happens is the only exception. So far everything works well and I do not see any side-effects or other issues with i915_dri and OpenGL. The same code seems to be present in 7.6 and 7.7 upstream branches, the code in 7.8 and master seems to be too different. Not sure if this issue needs to be reported to Mesa folks. -- Andriy Gapon --------------030209010402000901050207 Content-Type: text/plain; name="intel-opengl.patch" Content-Transfer-Encoding: base64 Content-Disposition: inline; filename="intel-opengl.patch" LS0tIHNyYy9tZXNhL2RyaXZlcnMvZHJpL2k5MTUvaTkxNV90ZXhzdGF0ZS5jLm9yaWcJMjAx MC0wNS0yMiAwMjoxNzoxMS4xNjIzMDIwMjMgKzAzMDAKKysrIHNyYy9tZXNhL2RyaXZlcnMv ZHJpL2k5MTUvaTkxNV90ZXhzdGF0ZS5jCTIwMTAtMDUtMjIgMDI6MTg6MTQuMTQ3MDE3MDY0 ICswMzAwCkBAIC0xOTQsNyArMTk0LDcgQEAKICAgICAgICgoKGZpcnN0SW1hZ2UtPkhlaWdo dCAtIDEpIDw8IE1TM19IRUlHSFRfU0hJRlQpIHwKICAgICAgICAoKGZpcnN0SW1hZ2UtPldp ZHRoIC0gMSkgPDwgTVMzX1dJRFRIX1NISUZUKSB8IGZvcm1hdCk7CiAKLSAgIGlmIChpbnRl bE9iai0+bXQtPnJlZ2lvbi0+dGlsaW5nICE9IEk5MTVfVElMSU5HX05PTkUpIHsKKyAgIGlm ICghaW50ZWxPYmotPmltYWdlT3ZlcnJpZGUgJiYgaW50ZWxPYmotPm10LT5yZWdpb24tPnRp bGluZyAhPSBJOTE1X1RJTElOR19OT05FKSB7CiAgICAgICBzdGF0ZVtJOTE1X1RFWFJFR19N UzNdIHw9IE1TM19USUxFRF9TVVJGQUNFOwogICAgICAgaWYgKGludGVsT2JqLT5tdC0+cmVn aW9uLT50aWxpbmcgPT0gSTkxNV9USUxJTkdfWSkKIAkgc3RhdGVbSTkxNV9URVhSRUdfTVMz XSB8PSBNUzNfVElMRV9XQUxLOwoK --------------030209010402000901050207-- From owner-freebsd-x11@FreeBSD.ORG Sat May 22 18:46:44 2010 Return-Path: Delivered-To: x11@FreeBSD.org Received: from mx1.freebsd.org (mx1.freebsd.org [IPv6:2001:4f8:fff6::34]) by hub.freebsd.org (Postfix) with ESMTP id 7CC651065672 for ; Sat, 22 May 2010 18:46:44 +0000 (UTC) (envelope-from gerald@pfeifer.com) Received: from vexpert.dbai.tuwien.ac.at (vexpert.dbai.tuwien.ac.at [128.131.111.2]) by mx1.freebsd.org (Postfix) with ESMTP id 3F43B8FC1D for ; Sat, 22 May 2010 18:46:44 +0000 (UTC) Received: from acrux.dbai.tuwien.ac.at (acrux.dbai.tuwien.ac.at [128.131.111.60]) by vexpert.dbai.tuwien.ac.at (Postfix) with ESMTP id 37E561E065 for ; Sat, 22 May 2010 20:46:41 +0200 (CEST) Received: by acrux.dbai.tuwien.ac.at (Postfix, from userid 1203) id F20F01604A; Sat, 22 May 2010 20:46:43 +0200 (CEST) Received: from localhost (localhost [127.0.0.1]) by acrux.dbai.tuwien.ac.at (Postfix) with ESMTP id DB74216048 for ; Sat, 22 May 2010 20:46:43 +0200 (CEST) Date: Sat, 22 May 2010 20:46:43 +0200 (CEST) From: Gerald Pfeifer To: x11@FreeBSD.org Message-ID: User-Agent: Alpine 1.99 (LSU 1142 2008-08-13) MIME-Version: 1.0 Content-Type: TEXT/PLAIN; charset=US-ASCII Cc: Subject: Simplify relative path in libGLU/Makefile X-BeenThere: freebsd-x11@freebsd.org X-Mailman-Version: 2.1.5 Precedence: list List-Id: X11 on FreeBSD -- maintaining and support List-Unsubscribe: , List-Archive: List-Post: List-Help: List-Subscribe: , X-List-Received-Date: Sat, 22 May 2010 18:46:44 -0000 I used some script that checks out ports individually where the following patch simplified things, and in general it strikes me as preferrable.
