Hi, it can be configured in Bios either es plain AHCI or Raid (which is a firmware/driver raid, not something you expect when hearing the word "RAID"). Pick AHCI and everything is fine. On my wish list are: - Can run FreeBSD >= 8.2 (i386 or amd64). - Models with 4 to 8 (or more) network interfaces, at least 4 gigabit but all gigabit is better. Preferrably Intel em or igb chips. - Preferrably a choice of low power CPUs (Intel Atom D510/D525?) and more powerful CPUs (Core 2/Xeon) - Bootable from flash or (SATA 2,5") SSD - 1U rackmount models available but preferrably also small passively cooled desktop boxes. - Serial console preferrable over VGA console. - IPMI would be a plus but not absolutely required. - Distribution channel in Europe. The components are listed below: Motherboard: Supermicro X7SPA-HF-D525 (Atom D525) Memory: Crucial CT2KIT25664BC1067 (2x2GB DDR3 1066) Network Card: Intel E1G44HT (4-port gigabit) SSD: OCZ Vertex 2 OCZSSD2-2VTXE60G Enclosure: Thermaltake Element Q VL52021N2U The final price for all components was ~$680. I've had no problems setting up FreeBSD 8.2 amd64 on this box. The system has 6 gigabit ports total (2 em, 4 igb). There is IPMI with KVM-over-IP on em0. No issues with my choice of SSD, though I've now added a hot-swap 3.5" enclosure in the 5.25" bay, which will have a mechanical drive for backup purposes. You'll have to look around for a 1U enclosure. My case has a single fan in the power supply, which I don't mind. It's impossible to hear and creates a tiny bit of airflow right over the CPU heat sink. If you don't want any moving parts at all, take a look at picoPSU from mini-box.com. - Max [1] http://www.soekris.com/net6501.htm From owner-freebsd-hardware@FreeBSD.ORG Mon Mar 28 12:18:08 2011 Return-Path: Delivered-To: freebsd-hardware@freebsd.org Received: from mx1.freebsd.org (mx1.freebsd.org [IPv6:2001:4f8:fff6::34]) by hub.freebsd.org (Postfix) with ESMTP id 81728106566B for ; Mon, 28 Mar 2011 12:18:08 +0000 (UTC) (envelope-from jhb@freebsd.org) Received: from cyrus.watson.org (cyrus.watson.org [65.122.17.42]) by mx1.freebsd.org (Postfix) with ESMTP id 3D4CF8FC16 for ; Mon, 28 Mar 2011 12:18:08 +0000 (UTC) Received: from bigwig.baldwin.cx (66.111.2.69.static.nyinternet.net [66.111.2.69]) by cyrus.watson.org (Postfix) with ESMTPSA id CD01046B0D; Mon, 28 Mar 2011 08:18:07 -0400 (EDT) Received: from jhbbsd.localnet (unknown [209.249.190.124]) by bigwig.baldwin.cx (Postfix) with ESMTPSA id 6B78F8A01B; Mon, 28 Mar 2011 08:18:07 -0400 (EDT) From: John Baldwin To: freebsd-hardware@freebsd.org Date: Mon, 28 Mar 2011 08:18:06 -0400 User-Agent: KMail/1.13.5 (FreeBSD/8.2-CBSD-20110311; KDE/4.5.5; amd64; ; ) References: <3052ba363957ef179b4531ed0362d494.squirrel@www2.ertyu.org> <201103241315.28747.jhb@freebsd.org> In-Reply-To: MIME-Version: 1.0 Content-Type: Text/Plain; charset="iso-8859-1" Content-Transfer-Encoding: 7bit Message-Id: <201103280818.06763.jhb@freebsd.org> X-Greylist: Sender succeeded SMTP AUTH, not delayed by milter-greylist-4.2.6 (bigwig.baldwin.cx); Mon, 28 Mar 2011 08:18:07 -0400 (EDT) Cc: Steven Nikkel Subject: Re: 8.x and Modems X-BeenThere: freebsd-hardware@freebsd.org X-Mailman-Version: 2.1.5 Precedence: list List-Id: General discussion of FreeBSD hardware List-Unsubscribe: , List-Archive: List-Post: List-Help: List-Subscribe: , X-List-Received-Date: Mon, 28 Mar 2011 12:18:08 -0000 On Friday, March 25, 2011 10:17:21 am Steven Nikkel wrote: > On 2011-03-24, at 12:15 PM, John Baldwin wrote: > > > On Thursday, March 24, 2011 9:26:16 am Steven Nikkel wrote: > >> On Wed, 23 Mar 2011, John Baldwin wrote: > >> > >>> On Wednesday, March 23, 2011 1:34:54 am Steven Nikkel wrote: > >>>> On Tue, 22 Mar 2011, John Baldwin wrote: > >>>>>>> On Monday, March 21, 2011 5:17:19 pm steven_nikkel@ertyu.org wrote: > >>>>>>>> I recently upgraded my trusty old 4.x system to 8.1 and the one little > >>>>> bit > >>>>>>>> I can't get working is the internal ISA modem in the system. So sure enough after a couple hours of compiling and reboots that is the issue. The first check shows it reads a few resources then times out trying to read one 45 bytes long. I updated the time out dramatically in pnp_get_resource_info to verify and sure enough PNP now successfully initializes the card. Curiously I looked at pnpinfo and it seems to use pretty much the exact same process, except it was working previously. (PS: I set the count to 1000 and delay to 100, extreme overkill, but I didn't want to wait for several kernel compiles to get it to work) Can you try just increasing the DELAY()? If that works I'll commit it. I wonder if DELAY(1) is broken somehow. (Would be odd if DELAY(2) worked for example, but DELAY(1) didn't.) > Here are some relevant snippets from dmesg with my debugging bits: http://pastebin.com/uKRReBc0 > > Now onto the next bit: uart doesn't seem to identify the card properly. Different than previous usage, but at least appears to be useful. So is the card working correctly now? I've been looking at Supermicro too, that would solve the problem when no more that 6 interfaces are needed. However I have a number of boxes with 7 (net4801+lan1741) or 8 (net5501+lan1741) interfaces in production and those are the first ones that need replacement. Anyway, thanks for > sharing your experience! Perhaps a device like that in combination with a managed switch can be an=20 option? Assuming that you don't expect to fill all gbit ports simultaneousl= y=20 ofcourse. Just trunk a few connections with LACP and use 802.11Q to give every switch= =20 connection a separate interface on the box and you've got a system that eas= ily=20 supports 24 gigabit ports. You can use a Procurve 1810G-8 which is only ~$80 in addition to just about= =20 any machine with one (or a couple) of gigabit ports. Since generating 11Gb/s of traffic ain't easy. :) --WjW From owner-freebsd-hardware@FreeBSD.ORG Sat Apr 2 14:23:18 2011 Return-Path: Delivered-To: freebsd-hardware@freebsd.org Received: from mx1.freebsd.org (mx1.freebsd.org [IPv6:2001:4f8:fff6::34]) by hub.freebsd.org (Postfix) with ESMTP id 270B7106566C for ; Sat, 2 Apr 2011 14:23:18 +0000 (UTC) (envelope-from lev@FreeBSD.org) Received: from onlyone.friendlyhosting.spb.ru (unknown [IPv6:2a01:4f8:131:60a2::2]) by mx1.freebsd.org (Postfix) with ESMTP id E33C28FC13 for ; Sat, 2 Apr 2011 14:23:17 +0000 (UTC) Received: from lion.home.serebryakov.spb.ru (89.112.15.178.pppoe.eltel.net [89.112.15.178]) (Authenticated sender: lev@serebryakov.spb.ru) by onlyone.friendlyhosting.spb.ru (Postfix) with ESMTPA id D2BDA4AC42; Sat, 2 Apr 2011 18:23:16 +0400 (MSD) Date: Sat, 2 Apr 2011 18:23:13 +0400 From: Lev Serebryakov Organization: FreeBSD X-Priority: 3 (Normal) Message-ID: <1257427949.20110402182313@serebryakov.spb.ru> To: Paul Schenkeveld In-Reply-To: <20110327131643.GA36085@psconsult.nl> References: <20110327131643.GA36085@psconsult.nl> MIME-Version: 1.0 Content-Type: text/plain; charset=windows-1251 Content-Transfer-Encoding: quoted-printable Cc: freebsd-hardware@freebsd.org Subject: Re: looking for gigabit network appliances X-BeenThere: freebsd-hardware@freebsd.org X-Mailman-Version: 2.1.5 Precedence: list Reply-To: lev@FreeBSD.org List-Id: General discussion of FreeBSD hardware List-Unsubscribe: , List-Archive: List-Post: List-Help: List-Subscribe: , X-List-Received-Date: Sat, 02 Apr 2011 14:23:18 -0000 Hello, Paul. WD HDD WD20EARS (Green 2Tb HDD) has "advanced" format -- 4Kb sectors -- according to label. But output of it detection from ahci.ko and "camcontrol identify" doesn't have any traces of it. Is here any way to be sure, that drive doesn't use internal emulation with offset? No jumpers are set on it. --=20 // Black Lion AKA Lev Serebryakov
