But I've never combined the two since historically, it was either not possible or difficult. But I'm about to emark on a new project and java is my language of choice. I was wondering if it's feasible to do this with FreeBSD now. It looks like the recommended way to go is to use openJDK on freebsd. Is it an efficient JRE? Is it stable? Are there binary packages available or are there licensing problems that prevent it? What about EJB and Servelet containers? Is it possible to get something going under FreeBSD. I guess basically I am curious as to what the overall status of Java and FreeBSD is. The FreeBSD project page is quite outdated, so I just joined this list in the hope that someone can shed some light for me. -D From owner-freebsd-java@FreeBSD.ORG Tue May 31 14:11:55 2011 Return-Path: Delivered-To: freebsd-java@FreeBSD.org Received: from mx1.freebsd.org (mx1.freebsd.org [IPv6:2001:4f8:fff6::34]) by hub.freebsd.org (Postfix) with ESMTP id B077E1065670 for ; Tue, 31 May 2011 14:11:55 +0000 (UTC) (envelope-from lev@FreeBSD.org) Received: from onlyone.friendlyhosting.spb.ru (onlyone.friendlyhosting.spb.ru [IPv6:2a01:4f8:131:60a2::2]) by mx1.freebsd.org (Postfix) with ESMTP id 78C818FC18 for ; Tue, 31 May 2011 14:11:55 +0000 (UTC) Received: from lion.home.serebryakov.spb.ru (unknown [IPv6:2001:470:923f:1:d929:8867:6867:1b37]) (Authenticated sender: lev@serebryakov.spb.ru) by onlyone.friendlyhosting.spb.ru (Postfix) with ESMTPA id 255A34AC1C for ; Tue, 31 May 2011 18:11:54 +0400 (MSD) Date: Tue, 31 May 2011 18:11:51 +0400 From: Lev Serebryakov Organization: FreeBSD X-Priority: 3 (Normal) Message-ID: <409362908.20110531181151@serebryakov.spb.ru> To: "freebsd-java@FreeBSD.org" MIME-Version: 1.0 Content-Type: text/plain; charset=windows-1251 Content-Transfer-Encoding: quoted-printable Cc: Subject: What is status of 'java/jdk16'? OpenJDK is the only JVM that's getting any real love under FreeBSD at the moment. It's pretty stable, no slower than jdk16, and pretty much works as exepcted for web-app development. There are packages available off the package-sites, and the licence is GPLv2. However, Swing support is "close-but-not-quite". You can trigger race conditions with some apps (eg: Netbeans, and apps with Netbeans base, like iReports); but in most cases it works. If you're willing to live with that you're good to go with OpenJDK. Hope that helps. -- Jonathan Chen From owner-freebsd-java@FreeBSD.ORG Wed Jun 1 05:30:15 2011 Return-Path: Delivered-To: freebsd-java@freebsd.org Received: from mx1.freebsd.org (mx1.freebsd.org [IPv6:2001:4f8:fff6::34]) by hub.freebsd.org (Postfix) with ESMTP id 8FDA91065679; Wed, 1 Jun 2011 05:30:15 +0000 (UTC) (envelope-from glewis@eyesbeyond.com) Received: from misty.eyesbeyond.com (gerbercreations.com [71.39.140.16]) by mx1.freebsd.org (Postfix) with ESMTP id 555C18FC18; Wed, 1 Jun 2011 05:30:14 +0000 (UTC) Received: from misty.eyesbeyond.com (localhost.eyesbeyond.com [127.0.0.1]) by misty.eyesbeyond.com (8.14.4/8.14.4) with ESMTP id p514qW7k024006; Tue, 31 May 2011 21:52:32 -0700 (PDT) (envelope-from glewis@eyesbeyond.com) Received: (from glewis@localhost) by misty.eyesbeyond.com (8.14.4/8.14.4/Submit) id p514qVL2024005; Tue, 31 May 2011 21:52:31 -0700 (PDT) (envelope-from glewis@eyesbeyond.com) X-Authentication-Warning: misty.eyesbeyond.com: glewis set sender to glewis@eyesbeyond.com using -f Date: Tue, 31 May 2011 21:52:31 -0700 From: Greg Lewis To: Lev Serebryakov Message-ID: <20110601045230.GA22803@misty.eyesbeyond.com> References: <409362908.20110531181151@serebryakov.spb.ru> MIME-Version: 1.0 Content-Type: text/plain; charset=us-ascii Content-Disposition: inline In-Reply-To: <409362908.20110531181151@serebryakov.spb.ru> User-Agent: Mutt/1.5.21 (2010-09-15) Cc: "freebsd-java@FreeBSD.org" Subject: Re: What is status of 'java/jdk16'? I've worked in HotSpot team for 4 years (when Sun was Sun, not Oracle), and I think, it needs huge effort, as platforms were renamed between these versions. Also, it is especially hard, because "bsd-jdk16-patches-4.tar.bz2" creates all "*/bsd/*" files directly, not as "copy from linux or solaris and add changes", so it is very hard to track what need be changed after such copy, and what is "source" in old version. This task could be much simpler, if patch is REAL patch, not file creation, as it is clear, that all these "*/bsd/*" files has some (linux or solaris) origin, and it is much simpler to port patches to new linux/solaris versions. > What do you find that OpenJDK doesn't work for? I also have a debian workstation, almost a replica of my freebsd system (openjdk, maven, grails) and both of them behave the same way. For pure server side development I think is as good platform as any other linux, for desktop applications I cannot provide more details, I can run netbeans 7 but I can't use intellij. Best. I've tried fetch, but that just downloads the php part of the webpage. What tool is provided with FreeBSD so that I can accept the agreement and download the file? Thanks for your help, Mario Lopez
