The only way I was able to get that to even was by settings the OF devalias for cd to the device path of the USB stick. But even when I can get it that far, 'lsdev' does not list any block devices (just enet.) I finally got the optical drive on the Powerbook to read the BSD install disc and the install CD worked flawlessly. Seems to me that the boot loader just won't cooperate, since I'm taking files that are supposed to be for a CD-ROM and everything built- in to the boot process on the live cd or install cd are assuming you're using an optical drive. Perhaps I can just figure out how to modify the boot loader on .rc or conf files to make them work? Does BSD require a root filesystem at boot, similar to how a linux liveCD will use a RAM disk? the live CD and install CD iso images are all HFS standard partitions on the CD. asr is the apple system restore utility for cloning (block-level or file-level.) Hi Rich, I wanted the ISO to see if an older version would work on my G5. I had tried RC1, and it would freeze after a minute or so after booting up, and I had a similar experience on my TiBook (ppc32), which runs BETA2/-CURRENT (doesn't lock up every time, but locks up "eventually" sometimes), but not on my MDD (ppc32) which runs something from around BETA1, so was hoping reverting to BETA1 would fix things. Someone from ##freebsd linked me to a source for it, so I tried and it failed (see the other thread regarding the problem for (slightly) more details). - Justin From owner-freebsd-ppc@FreeBSD.ORG Mon Oct 31 02:04:24 2011 Return-Path: Delivered-To: freebsd-ppc@freebsd.org Received: from mx1.freebsd.org (mx1.freebsd.org [IPv6:2001:4f8:fff6::34]) by hub.freebsd.org (Postfix) with ESMTP id AC0B11065674 for ; Mon, 31 Oct 2011 02:04:24 +0000 (UTC) (envelope-from richo@psych0tik.net) Received: from bedford.accountservergroup.com (bedford.accountservergroup.com [50.22.11.19]) by mx1.freebsd.org (Postfix) with ESMTP id 84C048FC15 for ; Mon, 31 Oct 2011 02:04:24 +0000 (UTC) Received: from boxand.lnk.telstra.net ([203.45.130.125] helo=richh-imac.office.boxdice.com.au) by bedford.accountservergroup.com with esmtpsa (TLSv1:AES128-SHA:128) (Exim 4.69) (envelope-from ) id 1RKhEd-0005QC-6l for freebsd-ppc@freebsd.org; Sun, 30 Oct 2011 21:04:23 -0500 Date: Mon, 31 Oct 2011 13:04:27 +1100 From: richo To: freebsd-ppc@freebsd.org Message-ID: <20111031020427.GE21568@richh-imac.office.boxdice.com.au> References: <20111029212531.06a7c0a9@narn.knownspace> <20111030223951.GA21568@richh-imac.office.boxdice.com.au> <20111030220203.4d6f8f30@narn.knownspace> MIME-Version: 1.0 Content-Type: multipart/signed; micalg=pgp-sha1; protocol="application/pgp-signature"; boundary="JBi0ZxuS5uaEhkUZ" Content-Disposition: inline In-Reply-To: <20111030220203.4d6f8f30@narn.knownspace> X-PGP-Key: http://natalya.psych0tik.net/~richo/pubkey.asc User-Agent: Mutt/1.5.21 (2010-09-15) X-AntiAbuse: This header was added to track abuse, please include it with any abuse report X-AntiAbuse: Primary Hostname - bedford.accountservergroup.com X-AntiAbuse: Original Domain - freebsd.org X-AntiAbuse: Originator/Caller UID/GID - [47 12] / [47 12] X-AntiAbuse: Sender Address Domain - psych0tik.net X-Source: X-Source-Args: X-Source-Dir: Subject: Re: FreeBSD 9.0-BETA1 ISO ppc64 X-BeenThere: freebsd-ppc@freebsd.org X-Mailman-Version: 2.1.5 Precedence: list List-Id: Porting FreeBSD to the PowerPC List-Unsubscribe: , List-Archive: List-Post: List-Help: List-Subscribe: , X-List-Received-Date: Mon, 31 Oct 2011 02:04:24 -0000 --JBi0ZxuS5uaEhkUZ Content-Type: text/plain; charset=us-ascii; format=flowed Content-Disposition: inline On 30/10/11 22:02 -0400, Justin Hibbits wrote: >On Mon, 31 Oct 2011 09:39:51 +1100 >richo wrote: > >> On 29/10/11 21:25 -0400, Justin Hibbits wrote: >> >Anyone have a copy of the 9.0-BETA1 iso for PowerPC64? It's the last of the iMac's without iSight) I am having some issues with 10-CURRENT at present, but I've been using my BETA3 media as recovery while I try to get 10 working again, and aside from sometimes not firing up the installer, all seems well. I'll try to find your other thread. Strange. It has worked for me in the past, using a ud alias. Perhaps the ROM on your machine is too old to recognize / use an ud alias? FWIW, it has worked for me in the past. My procedure: 1) use dd (on a FreeBSD machine) to write the *.iso image to a memory stick (usb) 2) plug the memory stick into the G4 PowerBook, and use OF to figure out where it is connected 3) make a 'ud' alias, example: devalias ud /pci@f2000000/usb@1b,1/disk@1 4) boot from ud, example: boot ud:,\boot\loader ud:0 As you can see, I used the iso image; the machine didn't care that I put it on a memory stick. > Perhaps I can just figure out how to modify the boot loader on .rc or > conf files to make them work? IMHO, there shouldn't be anything to modify; this should just work. Perhaps the image / snapshot you are using is broken? According to the 1275 standard, we should return a phandle value of -1 in case of error, but the ofw_fdt_finddevice implementation now returns 0. The attached patches fixes this in the FDT code, and makes changes in the callers to check the return code correctly. Since most of the callers are in ARM, any testing on ARM would be really appreciated.
