I recently stumble upon long standing PYTHON_EGG_CACHE problem. There are a lot of questions which I can't address anywhere: 1. Is it secure to use world writable dir for PYTHON_EGG_CACHE? 2. Why there's no default? Because answer to No.1 is no? 3. Can I preinstall unzipped eggs to some directory so any script will automagically pick that one and never bug me again? 4. Wouldn't it be simpler (for end-user like me) to not install compressed eggs at all, unzipping them to corresponding dirs. This way noone evere needs to address this issue again. -- Sphinx of black quartz judge my vow. Consider the following session. Idea is to create a list which holds some strings so that cumulative characters in the list is 100MB. >>> l = [] >>> for i in xrange(100000): ... l.append(str(i) * (1000/len(str(i)))) This uses around 100MB of memory as expected and 'del l' will clear that. >>> for i in xrange(20000): ... l.append(str(i) * (5000/len(str(i)))) This is using 165MB of memory. I really don't understand where the additional memory usage is coming from. [Size of both lists are same] Python 2.6.4 on FreeBSD 7.2. On Linux and windows both uses around 100mb memory only. It's possible that Linux and Windows are using Python's malloc, whereas FreeBSD might be using the native PHK or JE malloc. (And it's not that surprising that different allocation patterns have different results in a garbage-collected environment.) http://docs.python.org/library/gc.html ...provides some info; consider importing gc and calling gc.collect() if you want to minimize the RAM needed to hold this big list of strings.
