I am puzzled that it happens when VirtualBoxes are running, while the =20 load or unload of the VirtualBox kernel modules doesn't seem to have =20 an effect. Should I describe the case at the -emulation mailing list to get some =20 ideas from the engineers working on VirtualBox? I do not want to create too much noise so I would like to know your =20 thoughts on it first. I experimented a little bit with the ssh code and know which write(2) in /usr/src/crypto/openssh/roaming_common.c (in function roaming_write) =20 returns the ENOMEM (an error it should never return, according to the =20 mainpage;-) but unfortunately I am lost to track it further down in the kernel. I =20 do not know enough about it, to be frankly. Are there any memory stats inside the kernel that could help? Thank you for all ideas Peter From owner-freebsd-stable@FreeBSD.ORG Mon Jul 11 05:17:00 2011 Return-Path: Delivered-To: freebsd-stable@freebsd.org Received: from mx1.freebsd.org (mx1.freebsd.org [IPv6:2001:4f8:fff6::34]) by hub.freebsd.org (Postfix) with ESMTP id D51021065672 for ; Mon, 11 Jul 2011 05:17:00 +0000 (UTC) (envelope-from smithi@nimnet.asn.au) Received: from sola.nimnet.asn.au (paqi.nimnet.asn.au [115.70.110.159]) by mx1.freebsd.org (Postfix) with ESMTP id 331F08FC18 for ; Mon, 11 Jul 2011 05:16:59 +0000 (UTC) Received: from localhost (localhost [127.0.0.1]) by sola.nimnet.asn.au (8.14.2/8.14.2) with ESMTP id p6B5GuUF086005; Mon, 11 Jul 2011 15:16:56 +1000 (EST) (envelope-from smithi@nimnet.asn.au) Date: Mon, 11 Jul 2011 15:16:56 +1000 (EST) From: Ian Smith To: Ted Faber In-Reply-To: <20100922181029.D11124@sola.nimnet.asn.au> Message-ID: <20110711133437.D84785@sola.nimnet.asn.au> References: <20100224165203.GA10423@zod.isi.edu> <20100225152711.M16250@sola.nimnet.asn.au> <20100226013551.GA67689@zod.isi.edu> <20100922181029.D11124@sola.nimnet.asn.au> MIME-Version: 1.0 Content-Type: TEXT/PLAIN; charset=US-ASCII Cc: freebsd-stable@freebsd.org, Vitaly Magerya Subject: [workaround] Re: resume slow on Thinkpad T42 FreeBSD 8-STABLE X-BeenThere: freebsd-stable@freebsd.org X-Mailman-Version: 2.1.5 Precedence: list List-Id: Production branch of FreeBSD source code List-Unsubscribe: , List-Archive: List-Post: List-Help: List-Subscribe: , X-List-Received-Date: Mon, 11 Jul 2011 05:17:01 -0000 Thanks to a recent post by Bengt Ahlgren in mobile@, the 60 second stall or freeze on resume from S3 suspend - an issue that's persisted since 8.0-R through present 8-STABLE and that has only been reported to affect various models of Thinkpad (T23, T30, T42 and X40 to date) - has been confirmed as being due to uhci. Bengt discovered that a successful workaround is to simply not have uhci loaded during suspend/resume. On my T23, currently at 8.2-RELEASE i386, building a kernel from only include GENERIC ident NO_UHCI nodevice uhci nodevice ohci # not used nodevice ehci # not used on T23 (USB 1 only) and adding uhci_load="YES" to /boot/loader.conf, kldunload uhci to /etc/rc.suspend and kldload uhci to /etc/rc.resume entirely eliminated my 60 second stall, and I once again feel confident to build a working, travelling 8-STABLE system. Thanks again Bengt, and I hope that this will work also for you Ted, and for Vitaly and others. So far I've seen no ill effects from having USB devices attached when suspending, except that filesystems mounted via USB are inaccessible on resume. Even then there are no panics as used to occur pre-8.x in such circumstances, umount/mount working to remount the fs .. though I've so far only tested that with a PC-BSD memstick image mounted r/o. I know nothing about the USB code, but would be happy to test patches; maybe this problem with uhci can be identified and fixed before 9.0? cheers, Ian On Wed, 22 Sep 2010, Ian Smith wrote: > On Thu, 25 Feb 2010 17:35:51 -0800, Ted Faber wrote: > > On Thu, Feb 25, 2010 at 05:18:22PM +1100, Ian Smith wrote: > > > On Wed, 24 Feb 2010, Ted Faber wrote: > > > > > > > I'm running a recent (yesterday) FreeBSD 8-STABLE on my T42. More I read, less I know. Just as I found that candida- te for my new laptop, dell latitude 13 comes with anti- glare screen and all hardware well supported, forums reveal that it's 320gb hard drive heats a lot. It makes vostro v13 better runner, but... How sounds the idea to have a place on freebsd site for such kind of data/wiki? Laptop recommendations should include new models only, since older ones are not easy to find in usable condition. Also, making a go for home node, cold and quiet box, with parts fine under freebsd is not so obvious. Especially for newer graphic chips. It shows that my first idea to get cold phenom II on the integrated mobo fails on almost all parts. Yep, some kind of wiki, saying "phenom to use under 8.2 to be cold and chip to find for amd mobo to take small amount of power might be..." At last, sad thing is that only before mentioned dell comes supported and with matte screen. What is the box you would recommend, not going deep into past decade? At the end of the install (so presumably it had worked for the hardware), it asked you if you wanted to email your hardware config to them. Something that just captured such emails and put them in a list (especially if could catch duplicates) for people to look at might be nice. The list would get long (and not really indicate how well the hardware worked), but at least it would be up-to-date and not require manual maintenance. I'm not volunteering to do this;-) although I'm retired too, but it might be a useful thing to have? rick From owner-freebsd-stable@FreeBSD.ORG Wed Jul 13 20:39:22 2011 Return-Path: Delivered-To: freebsd-stable@freebsd.org Received: from mx1.freebsd.org (mx1.freebsd.org [IPv6:2001:4f8:fff6::34]) by hub.freebsd.org (Postfix) with ESMTP id C1A3B106566B for ; Wed, 13 Jul 2011 20:39:22 +0000 (UTC) (envelope-from vladimir@urtext.ru) Received: from mail-yi0-f54.google.com (mail-yi0-f54.google.com [209.85.218.54]) by mx1.freebsd.org (Postfix) with ESMTP id 887E88FC15 for ; Wed, 13 Jul 2011 20:39:22 +0000 (UTC) Received: by yic13 with SMTP id 13so1921684yic.13 for ; Wed, 13 Jul 2011 13:39:21 -0700 (PDT) MIME-Version: 1.0 Received: by 10.100.83.15 with SMTP id g15mr1496477anb.79.1310588080930; Wed, 13 Jul 2011 13:14:40 -0700 (PDT) Received: by 10.100.241.18 with HTTP; Wed, 13 Jul 2011 13:14:40 -0700 (PDT) X-Originating-IP: [188.134.33.245] In-Reply-To: References: <20110712151858.GA1091@faust> <9A6EF07E-0EFF-4280-9BF7-B2D85C78A48F@jnielsen.net> <20110713142933.GA1088@mycenae.sbb.rs> Date: Thu, 14 Jul 2011 00:14:40 +0400 Message-ID: From: Vladimir Zorin To: Kevin Oberman Content-Type: text/plain; charset=UTF-8 Content-Transfer-Encoding: quoted-printable Cc: freebsd-stable@freebsd.org, Zoran Kolic Subject: Re: recommendations for laptop and desktop X-BeenThere: freebsd-stable@freebsd.org X-Mailman-Version: 2.1.5 Precedence: list Reply-To: vladimir@urtext.ru List-Id: Production branch of FreeBSD source code List-Unsubscribe: , List-Archive: List-Post: List-Help: List-Subscribe: , X-List-Received-Date: Wed, 13 Jul 2011 20:39:22 -0000 On Wed, Jul 13, 2011 at 8:47 PM, Kevin Oberman wrote: > On Jul 13, 2011 7:31 AM, "Zoran Kolic" wrote: >> >> > There is this list for laptops: >> > http://laptop.bsdgroup.de/freebsd/ >> >> Been there. Kevin Oberman, Network Engineer > Retired > kob6558@gmail.com You have time but no space ? I have space but no time. So if you want, I could install a wiki & turn it over to you to run. I just set up DNS for http://wiki.berklix,org/laptops/ to a static web page till I put up a wiki Next I need to decide which wiki stuff from ports to install. Suggestions welcome. However, maybe the team at http://laptop.bsdgroup.de/freebsd/index.html?action=laptop_submit_form just needs a bit of help upgrading their form & weeding / ordering their database ? ie start by adding 7.[34] 8.[0-2] etc to form You could ask them. BTW Axel Gruner on foot of that page by chance is in same town as me, you could contact him & ask. Alternatively there is http://wiki.freebsd.org You could see if they'll give you space there. I seem to recall it's for developers though, no docu. so might be difficult to get access. Up to you. I would suggest though, that whoever does it, we should try to co-operate with the predecessor compatibility lists such as http://laptop.bsdgroup.de/freebsd/ Probably all they really need adding is some "list by date last seen on sale in shops" function, + maybe some wiki function. At the end of the install (so presumably it had worked for > the hardware), it asked you if you wanted to email your hardware config > to them. I recall one Debian install doing something similar. People seem to be forgetting about bsdstats (port sysutils/bsdstats, http://bsdstats.org/) which attempts to do something similar though it focuses more on FreeBSD versions, hardware lists via pciconf and optionally ports lists, posting stats monthly and anonymously .. a plus for security but perhaps a minus for being able to seek information from people having certain hardware. As seen at bsdstats.org, the very much greater number of PC-BSD systems reporting reflects the fact that PC-BSD installs bsdstats as a matter of course; clearly the voluntary approach is far less effective, and people don't know that bsdstats reveals no personally identifying information until they've looked it over; many likely don't even know it exists. Zoran's comments that http://laptop.bsdgroup.de/freebsd/ is 'obsolete' are a bit misplaced regarding older kit that some of us use by choice or necessity (eg my 2.5 Thinkpad T23s :) but that site did get swamped with spam for ages, not all of which has been removed, and there's no way to group posts describing the same models in slightly different terms. Hard to get past the notion that someone needs to actively work on it, yet it needs to be largely self-maintained by its users independent of anyone's ongoing enthusiasm; difficult, perhaps contradictory criteria? > Something that just captured such emails and put them in a list (especially > if could catch duplicates) for people to look at might be nice. The list > would get long (and not really indicate how well the hardware worked), but > at least it would be up-to-date and not require manual maintenance. It could only be up to date initially, and just grow from there .. one advantage of the bsdstats approach is that only systems that continue reporting in monthly continue being reported. One could argue about the various ways that database information is presented, but any skillful database programmer could do quite a lot with such anonymised data, particularly if there were some identification of hardware make/model, though that's not available in the environment of reporting programs. > I'm not volunteering to do this;-) although I'm retired too, but it might > be a useful thing to have? rick Me neither, me too, and yes indeed. In my example noSQL product - redis holds a 10 GB RAM memory and when stop it just did not have time to reset the state to disk when i stop process or jail with redis. As result ive have in /var/db/redis "dump.tmp.XX" - broken DB about ~3 Gb instead of 10 GB. Waiting for PIDS: 47924 30 second watchdog timeout expired. Shutdown terminated. To increase the timeout, which is 30 seconds by default, just set rcshutdown_timeout (in your rc.conf) to a value that works for you. An option to > vary/disable the timeout would be welcome. squid by default waits 30 seconds before closing to give time to clients to close their connections. This is a very conservative value needed for big proxies. If you're using squid just to serve the local machine or a not so big network you can greatly lower this value, setting it to 5 or 10 seconds, or even less and have squid take much less time to stop. the configuration directive you should look at is "shutdown_lifetime" -- Guido Falsi From owner-freebsd-stable@FreeBSD.ORG Thu Jul 14 13:53:17 2011 Return-Path: Delivered-To: freebsd-stable@freebsd.org Received: from mx1.freebsd.org (mx1.freebsd.org [IPv6:2001:4f8:fff6::34]) by hub.freebsd.org (Postfix) with ESMTP id 5F593106566C for ; Thu, 14 Jul 2011 13:53:17 +0000 (UTC) (envelope-from zkolic@sbb.rs) Received: from smtp4.sbb.rs (smtp4.sbb.rs [89.216.2.36]) by mx1.freebsd.org (Postfix) with ESMTP id C45908FC1A for ; Thu, 14 Jul 2011 13:53:16 +0000 (UTC) Received: from mycenae (cable-94-189-180-156.dynamic.sbb.rs [94.189.180.156]) by smtp4.sbb.rs (8.14.0/8.14.0) with ESMTP id p6EDr8At008533; Thu, 14 Jul 2011 15:53:08 +0200 Received: by mycenae (Postfix, from userid 1001) id 7E60C5C23; Thu, 14 Jul 2011 15:50:49 +0200 (CEST) Date: Thu, 14 Jul 2011 15:50:49 +0200 From: Zoran Kolic To: Ian Smith Message-ID: <20110714135049.GA1085@mycenae.sbb.rs> References: <1829828854.535346.1310583542523.JavaMail.root@erie.cs.uoguelph.ca> <20110714162120.U5838@sola.nimnet.asn.au> Mime-Version: 1.0 Content-Type: text/plain; charset=us-ascii Content-Disposition: inline In-Reply-To: <20110714162120.U5838@sola.nimnet.asn.au> X-SMTP-Vilter-Version: 1.3.2 X-SBB-Virus-Status: clean X-SBB-Spam-Score: -1.8 Cc: freebsd-stable@freebsd.org Subject: Re: recommendations for laptop and desktop X-BeenThere: freebsd-stable@freebsd.org X-Mailman-Version: 2.1.5 Precedence: list List-Id: Production branch of FreeBSD source code List-Unsubscribe: , List-Archive: List-Post: List-Help: List-Subscribe: , X-List-Received-Date: Thu, 14 Jul 2011 13:53:17 -0000 > Zoran's comments that http://laptop.bsdgroup.de/freebsd/ is 'obsolete' > are a bit misplaced regarding older kit that some of us use by choice or > necessity (eg my 2.5 Thinkpad T23s :) Sorry for the word chosen in this case. Reading forums and having hardware details, seems that only dell vostro v13 works out of the box for freebsd. Hard drive is what makes it cold and quiet, contrary to latitude 13, which runs on 320gb seagate hot plate. I took into consideration just devices able to get in my area and at reasonable prise tag. I have a raidz2 with 4x2TB and 2x 2x1TB stripes to make 6x2TB in total. I currently have this: pool: pool2 state: DEGRADED status: One or more devices could not be used because the label is missing or invalid. Sufficient replicas exist for the pool to continue functioning in a degraded state. action: Replace the device using 'zpool replace'. see: http://www.sun.com/msg/ZFS-8000-4J scan: resilvered 1.83M in 0h0m with 0 errors on Thu Jul 14 14:59:22 2011 config: NAME STATE READ WRITE CKSUM pool2 DEGRADED 0 0 0 raidz2-0 DEGRADED 0 0 0 gpt/2TB_drive0 ONLINE 0 0 0 gpt/2TB_drive1 ONLINE 0 0 0 gpt/2TB_drive2 ONLINE 0 0 0 13298804679359865221 UNAVAIL 0 0 0 was /dev/gpt/1TB_drive0 12966661380732156057 UNAVAIL 0 0 0 was /dev/gpt/1TB_drive2 gpt/2TB_drive3 ONLINE 0 0 0 cache gpt/cache0 ONLINE 0 0 0 The two UNAVAIL entries used to be stripes. The system helpfully removed them for me. These are the stripes that used to be in the pool: # gstripe status Name Status Components stripe/1TB_drive0+1 UP gpt/1TB_drive1 gpt/1TB_drive0 stripe/1TB_drive2+3 UP gpt/1TB_drive3 gpt/1TB_drive2 They still exist and have all the data in them. It started, when I booted up with the drive that has gpt/1TB_drive1 missing and zfs helpfully replaced the stripe/1TB_drive0+1 device with gpt/1TB_drive0 and told me it had corrupt data on it. Am I right in thinking, that cos one drive was missing which meant that stripe/1TB_drive0+1 was then also missing, that zfs tasted around and found gpt/1TB_drive0 had what look like the right header on it. However, 64k in, it would find incorrect data, as the next 64k was on the missing part of the stripe on gpt/1TB_drive1? I was contemplating how to get the stripe back into the pool without having to do a complete resilver on it. Seemed unnecessary to have to do that when the data was all there. I thought an export and import might help it find it. However, that for some reason did the same to the other stripe stripe/1TB_drive2+3 and it got replaced with gpt/1TB_drive2. Now I am left without parity. Any ideas on what commands will bring this back? I know I can do a replace on both, but if there is some undetected corruption on the other devices then I will lose some data, as any parity that could fix it is currently missing. I do scrub regularly, but I'd prefer not to take that chance. Especially as I have all the data sitting there! I hoping someone has some magic zfs commands to make all this go away :) What can I do to prevent this in future? I've run pools with stripes for years without this happening. It seems zfs has started to look far and wide for it's devices? In the past if the stripe was broken, it would just tell me the device was missing. When the stripe was back, then all was fine. However, this tasting everywhere seems like stripes are now a no-no for zpools? Thanks. I've got panics, related to race, fixed in r204087, every second reboot on my 8-STABLE. This patch fixed them all. Applying custom patch after each update is painful. --=20 // Black Lion AKA Lev Serebryakov
