I have a SATA hdd connected to my computer with a USB adapter. When using rtorrent on a good connection with 2-3 MB/s after a minute or two all file system operations on the USB hdd get stalled from time to time for several seconds. Finally after 3-4 minutes all operations get stalled and when I unplug the drive most of the time my computer reboots. I am using FreeBSD 8.2-STABLE #0: Sat Oct 22 16:07:57 CEST 2011. I am not experiencing this problems when not having rtorrent on: watching a movie, compiling ports ... etc. The stall seems also to occur when rtorrent is checking the hashes. Btw I have tried the same with a USB flash drive and am experiencing the same kind of stall when doing rtorrent. Since I don't seem to have had the same kind of problems 1 or 2 years ago with FreeBSD 8.x and the same drive with the same adapter, I would guess that some regression has been introduced or my hardware does not work properly any more. Moreover I need to connect the drive to my laptop before powering up the FreeBSD otherwise it sees sometimes only a USB device with no drive attached to it and "camcontrol rescan all" gets stalled until I unplug the drive. I am not experiencing this particular problem when connecting the drive via a USB hub to my laptop. Does somebody have a solution for one of the above? Please CC me since I am not subscribed. bottom of the list. But the USB drive stalls again for some seconds after rtorrent hashing about 800MB: the LED on the drive stops blinking, the drive stops making any seek noises, there is no CPU activity and all attempts to "cd" into a directory on the drive get blocked until the device comes back again. As rtorrent continues the hashing after about 4GB of data, the stalls seem to appear more often - every 100-200 MB. Is there something else I might try? Note: I was compiling some 100-200 ports last night on the very same drive and that kind of "low speed" load does not seem to make it stall. I noticed that after the upgrade, two of my umass devices fail to attach. The first device is a 4th generation iPod running Rockbox. Under 8-STABLE, the iPod's 20GB had drive would show up as /dev/da1. Now, I get the following dmesg output and no umass devices: ugen1.7: at usbus1 umass1: on usbus1 umass1: could not setup required transfers, USB_ERR_NO_PIPE device_attach: umass1 attach returned 6 The second device is a Garmin Dakota 20 running stock Garmin firmware. Under 8-STABLE, the Garmin shows up as /dev/da1 and /dev/da2, the first representing the device's internal memory, the second its microSD card. Under 9-STABLE, I only get /dev/da1 and the following dmesg output: ugen1.8: at usbus1 umass1: on usbus1 da1 at umass-sim1 bus 1 scbus4 target 0 lun 0 da1: Removable Direct Access SCSI-5 device da1: 1.000MB/s transfers da1: 934MB (1912832 512 byte sectors: 64H 32S/T 934C) All my other umass devices work just fine, including a USB key that I always have plugged in as /dev/da0 and many other USB keys and USB hard drives. The issue is annoying enough that I am willing to invest time and effort into debugging it... but I would like to know where to look. Any ideas? I still have my 8-STABLE install around, so I can do some comparisons and regression testing. - Bartosz From owner-freebsd-usb@FreeBSD.ORG Tue Dec 27 14:24:31 2011 Return-Path: Delivered-To: freebsd-usb@freebsd.org Received: from mx1.freebsd.org (mx1.freebsd.org [IPv6:2001:4f8:fff6::34]) by hub.freebsd.org (Postfix) with ESMTP id 0EFD61065675 for ; Tue, 27 Dec 2011 14:24:31 +0000 (UTC) (envelope-from hselasky@c2i.net) Received: from swip.net (mailfe03.c2i.net [212.247.154.66]) by mx1.freebsd.org (Postfix) with ESMTP id 8DAD78FC17 for ; Tue, 27 Dec 2011 14:24:30 +0000 (UTC) X-T2-Spam-Status: No, hits=-0.2 required=5.0 tests=ALL_TRUSTED, BAYES_50 Received: from [188.126.198.129] (account mc467741@c2i.net HELO laptop002.hselasky.homeunix.org) by mailfe03.swip.net (CommuniGate Pro SMTP 5.4.2) with ESMTPA id 55331971; Tue, 27 Dec 2011 15:24:28 +0100 From: Hans Petter Selasky To: freebsd-usb@freebsd.org Date: Tue, 27 Dec 2011 15:22:04 +0100 User-Agent: KMail/1.13.5 (FreeBSD/8.2-STABLE; KDE/4.4.5; amd64; ; ) References: <4EF9D06C.9060501@chillt.de> In-Reply-To: <4EF9D06C.9060501@chillt.de> X-Face: *nPdTl_}RuAI6^PVpA02T?$%Xa^>@hE0uyUIoiha$pC:9TVgl.Oq, NwSZ4V"|LR.+tj}g5 %V,x^qOs~mnU3]Gn; cQLv&.N>TrxmSFf+p6(30a/{)KUU!s}w\IhQBj}[g}bj0I3^glmC( :AuzV9:.hESm-x4h240C`9=w MIME-Version: 1.0 Content-Type: Text/Plain; charset="utf-8" Content-Transfer-Encoding: 7bit Message-Id: <201112271522.04637.hselasky@c2i.net> Cc: Bartosz Fabianowski Subject: Re: umass regression X-BeenThere: freebsd-usb@freebsd.org X-Mailman-Version: 2.1.5 Precedence: list List-Id: FreeBSD support for USB List-Unsubscribe: , List-Archive: List-Post: List-Help: List-Subscribe: , X-List-Received-Date: Tue, 27 Dec 2011 14:24:31 -0000 On Tuesday 27 December 2011 15:04:28 Bartosz Fabianowski wrote: > Hi list > > I recently upgraded my amd64 box from 8-STABLE to 9-STABLE. Then when the problem=20 appears, you enable umass debugging: sysctl hw.usb.umass.debug=3D15 OR: Check activity with usbdump upon failure: usbdump -i usbusX -vvv > log.txt cat log.txt | grep USB_ERR Some USB HDDs might have firmware failures. I've just rebuilt the kernel with "options USB_DEBUG" and rebooted without setting the cache quirk but with "hw.usb.ehci.lostintrbug=1" and rtorrent just hashed more than 4 GB without any stalls. So that seems to fix the issue. Man EHCI(4) needs to fixed since it does not mention anything about that kernel option, should I file a pr? Thank you for your time. Yes, I spotted that too after I replied to your message. I always build Rockbox from source anyway, so I am making a firmware with USB debug support and will try to figure out what is going on - not today or tomorrow though as I have a holiday trip planned. I will be back with more information in a couple of days. - Bartosz From owner-freebsd-usb@FreeBSD.ORG Fri Dec 30 14:00:33 2011 Return-Path: Delivered-To: freebsd-usb@hub.freebsd.org Received: from mx1.freebsd.org (mx1.freebsd.org [IPv6:2001:4f8:fff6::34]) by hub.freebsd.org (Postfix) with ESMTP id C59F0106564A for ; Fri, 30 Dec 2011 14:00:33 +0000 (UTC) (envelope-from gnats@FreeBSD.org) Received: from freefall.freebsd.org (freefall.freebsd.org [IPv6:2001:4f8:fff6::28]) by mx1.freebsd.org (Postfix) with ESMTP id 9153B8FC08 for ; Fri, 30 Dec 2011 14:00:33 +0000 (UTC) Received: from freefall.freebsd.org (localhost [127.0.0.1]) by freefall.freebsd.org (8.14.5/8.14.5) with ESMTP id pBUE0X1V056116 for ; Fri, 30 Dec 2011 14:00:33 GMT (envelope-from gnats@freefall.freebsd.org) Received: (from gnats@localhost) by freefall.freebsd.org (8.14.5/8.14.5/Submit) id pBUE0XCK056115; Fri, 30 Dec 2011 14:00:33 GMT (envelope-from gnats) Date: Fri, 30 Dec 2011 14:00:33 GMT Message-Id: <201112301400.pBUE0XCK056115@freefall.freebsd.org> To: freebsd-usb@FreeBSD.org From: Volodymyr Kostyrko Cc: Subject: Re: usb/149934: Transcend JetFlash V85 poor performance X-BeenThere: freebsd-usb@freebsd.org X-Mailman-Version: 2.1.5 Precedence: list Reply-To: Volodymyr Kostyrko List-Id: FreeBSD support for USB List-Unsubscribe: , List-Archive: List-Post: List-Help: List-Subscribe: , X-List-Received-Date: Fri, 30 Dec 2011 14:00:33 -0000 The following reply was made to PR usb/149934; it has been noted by GNATS. The thread can be found here: http://forums.freebsd.org/showthread.php?t=3D28503 The final reply, from wblock, was that the problem was a USB one and should be posted here. In fact, I decided to leave it and just use another keyboard. However, Santa kindly brought me a Cherry G80-3000 for christmas and this does nor work either; exactly the same problem occurs with the device not recognised= . These are quite expensive keyboards: not at DAS or Filco prices but retailing for over =A360 in UK and using expensive Cherry switches, so not some bit of cheap junk that might not cause all that much surprise by not working. They are also quite popular so it's hard to believe I'm the only person using one. I have got it to work by connecting it to the PS/2 port via an adaptor so it's not the end of the world. However, these are unlikely to be supported for much longer so it would be better if it would work via USB port. As I said in the original forum posting, every other USB keyboard I have tried has worked, both from boot and hot plugged. This is the only time I have ever used a PS/2 connection. I can only assume it is something to do with whatever controller Cherry use within the keyboards. Is there any way I can solve this problem? O/S is FreeBSD 9.0 RC1 amd64. (I would leave this till running the final production version except that the other Cherry keyboard would work with the laptop running exact same O/S). In case it matters, the motherboard is a Abit - not sure of exact model but it is 2 or 3 years old. The device shows up as: So I tried the following: usbconfig add_dev_quirk_vplh 0x091e 0x23c0 0x0509 0x0110 UQ_MSC_NO_SYNC_CACHE On re-attach, I see an unchanged quirks = 0x4000.
