As I already mentioned, unfortunately there is no exact STR how to reproduce the issue (or at least I don't know how to reproduce it: whenever I tried to do the same I had been doing when Xorg crashed everything just worked). So it usually takes some time to obtain core. However after 8.3 was applied no cores over here. Bad news: Xorg started to freeze (again: I don't know how to reproduce it since it happens randomly and not so often (2 times during the last 24 hours)). It looks like bellow: - display remains intact, neither keyboard not mice events are recognized and there is no way to get it back working but reboot the machine (earlier after crashes I was able "blindly" switch to another vt, login and restart xdm). - machine is accessible via network, so I can login, though it is impossible to kill Xorg process (tried 3, 6, 9). It is also impossible to attach to Xorg process. gdb hangs right after it prints it's banner) I've collected ktrdump output. It is quite large (~500k after compression), so I'll send it to you off-list. On an HP envy 64-bit laptop with Ubuntu 10.04 booting in a normal way such that X starts hangs most (80%) of the time. The machine is not responsive to the keyboard, but, about half the time, I can ssh and kill the X processes. Booting into the Ubuntu recovery mode, log in and then 'sudo service gdm start' works every time I have tried it. I have FreeBSD-stable on the same machine using the vesa driver and the Radeon chip. My problem was discussed on this list "Xorg Fails on HP Envy 3D Laptop". This is not a production machine. Is it interesting to update to current and try the Radeon driver? Ok, now confirmed. If everything was compiling fine, xorg only detects basic VGA. It launches but exiting, it reboots the box ;-( So I will have to wait for the next kernel release supporting this. Do you know if this will be 9.0 ? Thanks for the info. I've put up with it for over a year now, but it's really started to get on my nerves. I've done some testing and it seems to have been introduced in 6.13.0. If I go back to 6.12.7, everything is fine. I'm using X server 1.7.7 from ports, with EXA acceleration. This happens without a compositor running (kwin/compiz/xcompmgr). In the screenshot, it's just plain openbox. You can see three windows (Terminal, akregator, chrome) as one big giant mess. This happens mostly when moving/resizing windows, but also with scrolling. Running 'xrefresh' will clear the screen and redraw everything properly. But then I move a window, and it happens again. Sometimes it's worse than others. In the screenshot, it's particularly bad. Unfortunately, the developers in #radeon on Freenode don't seem paritcularly concerned as this bug is only present when using UMS (I had the same issue in Slackware at one point when I was using UMS), and UMS is now, essentially, deprecated. There is at least one bug reported on http://bugs.freedesktop.org/ that seems to be related: https://bugs.freedesktop.org/show_bug.cgi?id=27650 Adam From owner-freebsd-x11@FreeBSD.ORG Mon Sep 5 18:15:35 2011 Return-Path: Delivered-To: freebsd-x11@freebsd.org Received: from mx1.freebsd.org (mx1.freebsd.org [IPv6:2001:4f8:fff6::34]) by hub.freebsd.org (Postfix) with ESMTP id C5D7B106566C for ; Mon, 5 Sep 2011 18:15:35 +0000 (UTC) (envelope-from wblock@wonkity.com) Received: from wonkity.com (wonkity.com [67.158.26.137]) by mx1.freebsd.org (Postfix) with ESMTP id 6D54C8FC1D for ; Mon, 5 Sep 2011 18:15:35 +0000 (UTC) Received: from wonkity.com (localhost [127.0.0.1]) by wonkity.com (8.14.5/8.14.5) with ESMTP id p85Hg955008352; Mon, 5 Sep 2011 11:42:09 -0600 (MDT) (envelope-from wblock@wonkity.com) Received: from localhost (wblock@localhost) by wonkity.com (8.14.5/8.14.5/Submit) with ESMTP id p85Hg9tM008349; Mon, 5 Sep 2011 11:42:09 -0600 (MDT) (envelope-from wblock@wonkity.com) Date: Mon, 5 Sep 2011 11:42:09 -0600 (MDT) From: Warren Block To: Adam K Kirchhoff In-Reply-To: <201109051251.58076.akirchhoff135014@gmail.com> Message-ID: References: <201109051251.58076.akirchhoff135014@gmail.com> User-Agent: Alpine 2.00 (BSF 1167 2008-08-23) MIME-Version: 1.0 Content-Type: TEXT/PLAIN; charset=US-ASCII; format=flowed X-Greylist: Sender IP whitelisted, not delayed by milter-greylist-4.2.7 (wonkity.com [127.0.0.1]); Mon, 05 Sep 2011 11:42:09 -0600 (MDT) X-Virus-Scanned: clamav-milter devel-20110704-exp at wonkity.com X-Virus-Status: Clean Cc: freebsd-x11@freebsd.org Subject: Re: Problems with the radeon driver X-BeenThere: freebsd-x11@freebsd.org X-Mailman-Version: 2.1.5 Precedence: list List-Id: X11 on FreeBSD -- maintaining and support List-Unsubscribe: , List-Archive: List-Post: List-Help: List-Subscribe: , X-List-Received-Date: Mon, 05 Sep 2011 18:15:35 -0000 On Mon, 5 Sep 2011, Adam K Kirchhoff wrote: > > Has anyone else seen this type of artefacting with the radeon driver: > > http://adam.visualtech.com/radeon-corruption.jpg > > I get it on two different machines, one with an HD4850 and one with an HD4350. > I've put up with it for over a year now, but it's really started to get on my > nerves. > > I've done some testing and it seems to have been introduced in 6.13.0. In many cases these ports are failing to compile on some subset of the FreeBSD build environments. The most common problem is that recent versions of -CURRENT include gcc4.2, which is much stricter than older versions. The next most common problem is that compiles succeed on the i386 architecture (e.g. the common Intel PC), but fail on one or more of the other architectures due to assumptions about things such as size of various types, byte-alignment issues, and so forth. In occasional cases we see that the same port may have different errors in different build environments. The script that runs on the build cluster uses heuristics to try to 'guess' the error type to help you isolate problems, but it is only a rough guide. One more note: on occasion, there are transient build errors seen on the build farm. Unfortunately, there is not yet any way for this algorithm to tell the difference (humans are much, much better at this kind of thing.) The errors are listed below. In the case where the same problem exists on more than one build environment, the URL points to the latest errorlog for that type. (By 'build environment' here we mean 'combination of 6.x/7.x/-current with target architecture'.) (Note: the dates are included to help you to gauge whether or not the error still applies to the latest version. The program that generates this report is not yet able to determine this automatically.) portname: x11-drivers/xf86-input-citron broken because: does not compile build errors: none. overview: http://portsmon.FreeBSD.org/portoverview.py?category=x11-drivers&portname=xf86-input-citron portname: x11-drivers/xf86-input-fpit broken because: does not compile build errors: none. overview: http://portsmon.FreeBSD.org/portoverview.py?category=x11-drivers&portname=xf86-input-fpit If these errors are ones that you are already aware of, please accept our apologies and ignore this message. On the other hand, if you no longer wish to maintain this port (or ports), please reply with a message stating that, and accept our thanks for your efforts in the past. Every effort has been made to make sure that these error reports really do correspond to a port that you maintain. However, due to the fact that this is an automated process, it may indeed generate false matches. If one of these errors fits that description, please forward this email to the author of this software, Mark Linimon , so that he can attempt to fix the problem in the future. Thanks for your efforts to help improve FreeBSD. If you are not interested in the story, just try 9.1 patch. If you are, please stay with me. Apparently, your pagedaemon is sleeping in 915unm state, that made me very much worrying. I did not understand how this could happen, because I thought that this is caused by pagedaemon dropping the last reference on the gem object device pager. And pagedaemon must not see pages belonging to device pagers, the pages must not appear on any queue. I added assertions to make sure to get the panic if a fictitious page is found on queues, which did not fired. But, I was able to reproduce the situation with pagedaemon hang, by running gem_stress and performing active swapping in parallel. I forgot that I finally implemented the low memory handler for gem, which is called from pagedaemon and which also does purging on the gem buffers. After that, it was relatively easy to track the issue. See the comment at the beginning of i915_gem_pager_fault() about interaction with i915_gem_release_mmap() which describes the cause of the hang: /* * Remove the placeholder page inserted by vm_fault() from the * object before dropping the object lock. If * i915_gem_release_mmap() is active in parallel on this gem * object, then it owns the drm device sx and might find the * placeholder already. Then, since the page is busy, * i915_gem_release_mmap() sleeps waiting for the busy state * of the page cleared. We will be not able to acquire drm * device lock until i915_gem_release_mmap() is able to make a * progress. */ For me, the patched driver survived while doing 'sort /dev/zero' and gem_stress in parallel. --BmVtdJMX1rCPvWQQ Content-Type: application/pgp-signature Content-Disposition: inline -----BEGIN PGP SIGNATURE----- Version: GnuPG v1.4.11 (FreeBSD) iEYEARECAAYFAk5pUgQACgkQC3+MBN1Mb4jPzQCgwe12brR75peMeQzL6YfjfZYS fJwAoMV9HZsTQmrjFY70J5JqezYFa7Np =qVC6 -----END PGP SIGNATURE----- --BmVtdJMX1rCPvWQQ-- From owner-freebsd-x11@FreeBSD.ORG Fri Sep 9 19:30:22 2011 Return-Path: Delivered-To: freebsd-x11@hub.freebsd.org Received: from mx1.freebsd.org (mx1.freebsd.org [IPv6:2001:4f8:fff6::34]) by hub.freebsd.org (Postfix) with ESMTP id 7C0AC1065672; I confirm that with all.9.1.patch system remains stable even under high memory pressure. I tried your test (thanks, it is actually exactly what I had been looking for quite a long time: i.e. exact STR of the issue). Running "gem_stress" and "sort /dev/zero" in parallel turned my system into unusable state within less then 10 seconds. Repeated test 3 times in a row. The outcome was the same in all cases: X server hanged (reset was the only way out to get machine operational). After applying all.9.1.patch I ran the same test again and system remained stable and even pretty responsive. Both (gem_stress and sort /dev/zero) were running for a while and after a couple of minutes sort process was killed by system (with "out of swap space" error). Will keep an eye on it so should I notice more issues will let you know. Thanks! I really appreciate it! -- WBR, Andrey Kosachenko From owner-freebsd-x11@FreeBSD.ORG Sat Sep 10 06:26:23 2011 Return-Path: Delivered-To: x11@FreeBSD.org Received: from mx2.freebsd.org (mx2.freebsd.org [IPv6:2001:4f8:fff6::35]) by hub.freebsd.org (Postfix) with ESMTP id 1F5AB1065673; Sat, 10 Sep 2011 06:26:23 +0000 (UTC) (envelope-from dougb@FreeBSD.org) Received: from 172-17-198-245.globalsuite.net (hub.freebsd.org [IPv6:2001:4f8:fff6::36]) by mx2.freebsd.org (Postfix) with ESMTP id 200C01501B2; Sat, 10 Sep 2011 06:26:21 +0000 (UTC) Message-ID: <4E6B030C.9030805@FreeBSD.org> Date: Fri, 09 Sep 2011 23:26:20 -0700 From: Doug Barton Organization: http://SupersetSolutions.com/ User-Agent: Mozilla/5.0 (X11; FreeBSD amd64; rv:6.0.1) Gecko/20110901 Thunderbird/6.0.1 MIME-Version: 1.0 To: x11@FreeBSD.org, "freebsd-ports@FreeBSD.org" X-Enigmail-Version: undefined OpenPGP: id=1A1ABC84 Content-Type: text/plain; charset=ISO-8859-1 Content-Transfer-Encoding: 7bit Cc: Subject: x11/xset needs a direct dependency on xproto X-BeenThere: freebsd-x11@freebsd.org X-Mailman-Version: 2.1.5 Precedence: list List-Id: X11 on FreeBSD -- maintaining and support List-Unsubscribe: , List-Archive: List-Post: List-Help: List-Subscribe: , X-List-Received-Date: Sat, 10 Sep 2011 06:26:23 -0000 ... otherwise it misses the need to upgrade xproto, thus: checking for XSET... configure: error: Package requirements (xproto >= 7.0.17 xmuu) were not met: Requested 'xproto >= 7.0.17' but version of Xproto is 7.0.16 Index: Makefile =================================================================== RCS file: /home/pcvs/ports/x11/xset/Makefile,v retrieving revision 1.6 diff -u -r1.6 Makefile --- Makefile 7 Sep 2011 21:19:05 -0000 1.6 +++ Makefile 10 Sep 2011 06:25:34 -0000 @@ -13,7 +13,7 @@ COMMENT= User preference utility for X XORG_CAT= app -USE_XORG= xmuu +USE_XORG= xmuu xproto PLIST_FILES= bin/xset -- Nothin' ever doesn't change, but nothin' changes much. -- OK Go Breadth of IT experience, and depth of knowledge in the DNS.
