From: alex To: Cc: Subject: Re: kern/154428: [xen] xn0 network interface and PF - Massive performance drop Date: Sun, 13 Feb 2011 14:01:51 +1100 Hi, Any update on this? I've had to disable external connections for some services on my VPS due to dictionary/brute force attacks and having no ability to use PF to firewall out the offending IP's/ranges. If nobody is interested, I will go back to a generic kernel. There have been problems with Xen and TSO in the past relating to how much data gets handed off to the hypervisor at once... why this would cause issues only with PF, I have no idea, though. -- Colin Percival Security Officer, FreeBSD | freebsd.org | The power to serve Founder / author, Tarsnap | tarsnap.com | Online backups for the truly paranoid From owner-freebsd-xen@FreeBSD.ORG Sun Feb 13 04:40:11 2011 Return-Path: Delivered-To: freebsd-xen@hub.freebsd.org Received: from mx1.freebsd.org (mx1.freebsd.org [IPv6:2001:4f8:fff6::34]) by hub.freebsd.org (Postfix) with ESMTP id BB286106566B for ; Sun, 13 Feb 2011 04:40:11 +0000 (UTC) (envelope-from gnats@FreeBSD.org) Received: from freefall.freebsd.org (freefall.freebsd.org [IPv6:2001:4f8:fff6::28]) by mx1.freebsd.org (Postfix) with ESMTP id 909AF8FC15 for ; Sun, 13 Feb 2011 04:40:11 +0000 (UTC) Received: from freefall.freebsd.org (localhost [127.0.0.1]) by freefall.freebsd.org (8.14.4/8.14.4) with ESMTP id p1D4eBT0027562 for ; Sun, 13 Feb 2011 04:40:11 GMT (envelope-from gnats@freefall.freebsd.org) Received: (from gnats@localhost) by freefall.freebsd.org (8.14.4/8.14.4/Submit) id p1D4eBuU027561; Sun, 13 Feb 2011 04:40:11 GMT (envelope-from gnats) Date: Sun, 13 Feb 2011 04:40:11 GMT Message-Id: <201102130440.p1D4eBuU027561@freefall.freebsd.org> To: freebsd-xen@FreeBSD.org From: Colin Percival Cc: Subject: Re: kern/154428: xn0 network interface and PF - Massive performance drop X-BeenThere: freebsd-xen@freebsd.org X-Mailman-Version: 2.1.5 Precedence: list Reply-To: Colin Percival List-Id: Discussion of the freebsd port to xen - implementation and usage List-Unsubscribe: , List-Archive: List-Post: List-Help: List-Subscribe: , X-List-Received-Date: Sun, 13 Feb 2011 04:40:11 -0000 The following reply was made to PR kern/154428; it has been noted by GNATS. Network bridged. I have two other Linux DomU. It's highly experimental, but it's usable, and near of reliable. I did create a debootstrap environment of kFreeBSD and then uploaded it to the LVM partition I use for my BSD DomU. So far so good - it's been up for a couple of weeks and has survived daily usage and a couple of buildworlds, plus all ports installed were compiled. Performance seems to be acceptable. There's a gotcha with PF, which someone else mentioned in this list recently. One has to disable tcp.tso to get decent throughput. Disabling it enabled a colleague who is currently in Africa to go from stalled..2KB/s sftp connections to 70KB/s. Hope this helps. Definitely - I can upload files (via sftp) to this VM at ~90% my home connection upstream, over a UDP VPN. Also, a few weeks ago while setting this up, on local LAN tests it managed to push 400-600mbit/s (iperf) without a lot of tuning. Back when I ran the iperf test PF wasn't enabled yet, so that might explain how it managed to get to that (altough I haven't tested the other poster's assertion that the performance problem only manifests with PF on) In my experience NetBSD tends to perform better under Xen but that could be because HVM+PV vs PV. Also a NetBSD PV domU is limited to a single CPU, while with FreeBSD HVM+PV you can use many vcpus. I haven't tested with high vcpu counts, but in this particular VM, it's been running happily with 2 VCPUs and no noticeable problems. No panics, no noticeable performance problems (after the tso fix) and certainly not the famous 'time went backwards' problem. I have found that the cpu timer eats a lot of performance on some versions of FreeBSD. I set "kern.hz=100" in /boot/loader.conf to mitigate that. I'm not sure if it's still needed on 8.1. No such luck here; I've just tried an amd64 machine (8-STABLE from today) in a new installation of XenServer 5.6 and while the GENERIC kernel works stable enough, the XENHVM kernel produces all kinds of timer-related problems, accompanied by messages like: Feb 18 23:20:03 xbsd kernel: calcru: runtime went backwards from 28669021884109 usec to 22622950 usec for pid 11 (idle) The difference between 28669021884109 and 22622950 is huge! It almost looks like a memory corruption.
