The version of clang we have in FreeBSD is unable to build FreeBSD/ARM binaries. I have a patch to support, however, while it produces a working kernel, all userland programs crash before they get into main(). The problem I'm having with userland appears to be in crtend.o in the __do_global_ctors_aux function. It loads a list of functions to call but appears to be attempting to call a NULL pointer. I'm not yet sure the cause of this. Just getting to the point of "using" it is quite time intensive. I ran out of time trying to get my dreamplug to where I want it. These issues were in my way (this was some time ago, check the list for dates): - install requires non-trivial patches and kernel config - building ports on the device itself is dog slow (I likely need to put a swap partition on a usb stick to do that since the machine has no swap in the first place) - no qemu support to use faster machines to emulate arm to build ports - cross compiling ports is too dangerous I'm not an average user, but I had to stash this idea just the same due to time constraints. Also, as you point out, most developers here seem to be on -current (I believe this is version 10), I can't justify moving to 10 since most of my supported base is at 8. I compromised already and went to 9 since getting the dreamplug to work with 8 was even more daunting. I'm not saying anyone must work on these things, I know how open source is. I'm just saying there's a huge barrier to entry for "users" of these boards. Maybe the Raspberry PI estrus will change that? I hope so, I like this dreamplug since it seems to be the only inexpensive ARM machine that has dual gigabit ethernet interfaces. I just need a man-month to get it to where it's usable... :) -- Dave Hayes - Consultant - Altadena CA, USA - dave@jetcafe.org >>>> *The opinions expressed above are entirely my own* <<<< The only person who needs a contract is one who cannot be trusted. One big barrier to FreeBSD on arm has simply been that each new board only attracts a few developers. And each new board requires new drivers, new boot sequencing, etc, etc. It's an immense fragmentation problem. I've been trying to talk up FreeBSD-on-RaspberryPi since I think that could attract enough of a user base to really become a mature platform.=20 Even if you prefer a "more beefy" system like the DreamPlug or PandaBoard or =85 , consider getting a RaspberryPi as well and tinkering with that for a little bit. It's only $35. I'm looking for ideas for how to make it easier to customize the results from these scripts. (They have a few hooks for different kinds of customization but I need feedback to figure out if those hooks are sufficient.) The key piece right now is a concept of "board" that encapsulates how to partition a disk image for a particular system and what boot bits it requires. So question #1: do we import those firmware image tools into /usr/src/contrib/, or do we just require that building these things requires certain ports to be installed? I don't mind wrapping up my build binaries into ports (ie, mkuboot stuff with the right mklzma, mktplinkfw, mkubnt) and beginning the process of merging stuff into -HEAD. ARM is a bit more convoluted as there's sometimes a bootloader and bootblocks involved. If you're lucky, there's only one. ;-) My RaspberryPi build currently chains three boot loaders: * The two-stage RaspberryPi boot (binary blobs) * GPLed U-Boot sources (heavily patched) * FreeBSD ubldr (from the FreeBSD tree, but it can't be built as part = of buildworld or buildkernel) I personally do not want to import U-Boot into the FreeBSD tree, especially given that so far, every board I've looked at requires a separately-tweaked version from a different source. Having a megabyte or so of binary blobs for every different board is also unappealing. Having a single build framework in the FreeBSD tree that somehow explicitly depends on particular ports is not a bad idea, though. That would keep the binary blobs and bootloader sources out of our tree. It narrows the core problem down to a problem of describing how to build images for a particular board (which is basically what I'm trying to address in my scripts with the board// directory, though I know I still have a way to go). BTW, I'd love to get hold of a MIPS or other dev board and see what the boot process is like for those. I think that would help a lot to inform the work I'm doing. I'm still not convinced that the overall structure of the work I'm doing is yet flexible enough for a wide range of boards, but there's definitely promise. As to Warner's point, I haven't yet had a chance to play with the pkgng tools. I think they would allow me to add integrated package installation, which is a big step towards adding an "appliance" concept. If I understand correctly, Warner is asking for a way to say "I want on " (e.g., "webserver on RaspberryPi") and have the build system just spit out a working image. I'm not too scared to write a couple of IO-Controller drivers, but have no clue about the required work for the dual-core A9. I'm asking because Adapteva (http://www.adapteva.com/) has annouced a rather low cost board with their own coprocessing multicore CPU based on a Zync-7010 device. I like their own multicore CPU design, but even without it the Zynq with Gbit/s Ethernet and 1GB RAM and FPGA should make a good gerneric platform. The USD99 price was for crowdfunding, but they target a similar low price for normal sales. Thanks a lot! > make tinderbox is the important point here because it uses different compile time options and flags that Adrian doesn't probably have set in his KERNCONF -- assuming that the default KERNCONFs haven't been mangled on his system, in which case it messes up this statement; [un]fortunately someone can change GENERIC, etc on his/her box, run make tinderbox and have it pass, then . In which case I would recommend the following [just to be safe]: 1. Custom KERNCONF that includes a generic one. 2. make tinderbox -DMAKE_JUST_KERNELS before performing commits with just ARM/x86 and a select KERNCONF as a smoke test, and a more extensive make tinderbox when doing a more major commit. It unfortunately is slightly too small to run make universe at the moment; I do a lot of development on netbooks with small amounts of RAM and disk. My cut-down version is likely going to be "oh, and cross build a test MIPS kernel or two that doesn't actually set ATH_DEBUG* options by default". So I'm sorry about this; it'll get resolved soon. After some promising discussions on this list, I finally decided to order a Raspberry Pi, too (the new one with 512 MB RAM). It arrived this week -- I'm looking forward to play with it. :) Best regards Oliver PS: Anyone knows whether gpioctl(8) works on the R-Pi? -- Oliver Fromme, secnetix GmbH & Co.
