This is the same jack as for Linux? If so, jack doesn't add latency and can handle more than enough ports. Latency is from the backend/hardware and the clients have to provide the ports. Jack doesn't do resampling. It's impossible to misconfigure jack in a way, that it will add latency. Much more, on Linux the -Xalsarawmidi switch for jack2, aka jackdmp (not for jack1, aka jackd) does enable zero MIDI jitter, when using good MIDI devices, IOW PCI and PCIe devices, USB always will produce MIDI jitter. I have not investigated why. I don't mind it to be documented somewhere, but I don't see it realistic to even try to track all possible kinds of devices. I am trying to make the driver as universal as possible and can only hope that it will be enough for the most cases. Fortunately it is. Also, adding special exception for this laptop to the driver is quite pointless because while it will pass next 6 months FreeBSD release cycle this already not new laptop will be out of market for even more time and will be mostly forgotten. -- Alexander Motin From owner-freebsd-multimedia@FreeBSD.ORG Tue Nov 27 06:30:01 2012 Return-Path: Delivered-To: freebsd-multimedia@smarthost.ysv.freebsd.org Received: from mx1.freebsd.org (mx1.freebsd.org [69.147.83.52]) by hub.freebsd.org (Postfix) with ESMTP id 6F3F1D5F for ; Tue, 27 Nov 2012 06:30:01 +0000 (UTC) (envelope-from gnats@FreeBSD.org) Received: from freefall.freebsd.org (freefall.freebsd.org [IPv6:2001:1900:2254:206c::16:87]) by mx1.freebsd.org (Postfix) with ESMTP id 5471F8FC08 for ; Tue, 27 Nov 2012 06:30:01 +0000 (UTC) Received: from freefall.freebsd.org (localhost [127.0.0.1]) by freefall.freebsd.org (8.14.5/8.14.5) with ESMTP id qAR6U1P3025795 for ; Tue, 27 Nov 2012 06:30:01 GMT (envelope-from gnats@freefall.freebsd.org) Received: (from gnats@localhost) by freefall.freebsd.org (8.14.5/8.14.5/Submit) id qAR6U1BJ025790; Tue, 27 Nov 2012 06:30:01 GMT (envelope-from gnats) Date: Tue, 27 Nov 2012 06:30:01 GMT Message-Id: <201211270630.qAR6U1BJ025790@freefall.freebsd.org> To: freebsd-multimedia@FreeBSD.org Cc: From: Yuri Subject: Re: kern/148741: [sound] Headphones are deaf (do not work) on Lenovo ThinkPad X300 X-BeenThere: freebsd-multimedia@freebsd.org X-Mailman-Version: 2.1.14 Precedence: list Reply-To: Yuri List-Id: Multimedia discussions List-Unsubscribe: , List-Archive: List-Post: List-Help: List-Subscribe: , X-List-Received-Date: Tue, 27 Nov 2012 06:30:01 -0000 The following reply was made to PR kern/148741; it has been noted by GNATS. We had this in the hda driver before mav rewrote it. The rewrite was a definite improvement in most cases and it almost always works without user intervention now, but I still think we need some kind of quirks functionality. I don't buy the "hardware is obsolete in 6 months" argument. I have several 3+ years old laptops at home. All working great. Asking users to play around with device.hints just to get sound working (it's 2012 after all, not 1992...) isn't all that user-friendly. If someone manages to figure out the correct configuration for a specific laptop, we should make sure we pick it up and include it in the driver. This will save the next user with the same hardware at least a few gray hairs... -- Joel From owner-freebsd-multimedia@FreeBSD.ORG Tue Nov 27 16:46:57 2012 Return-Path: Delivered-To: freebsd-multimedia@freebsd.org Received: from mx1.freebsd.org (mx1.freebsd.org [69.147.83.52]) by hub.freebsd.org (Postfix) with ESMTP id 5941E276 for ; Tue, 27 Nov 2012 16:46:57 +0000 (UTC) (envelope-from mavbsd@gmail.com) Received: from mail-vc0-f182.google.com (mail-vc0-f182.google.com [209.85.220.182]) by mx1.freebsd.org (Postfix) with ESMTP id DD5168FC13 for ; Tue, 27 Nov 2012 16:46:56 +0000 (UTC) Received: by mail-vc0-f182.google.com with SMTP id fo13so17089249vcb.13 for ; Tue, 27 Nov 2012 08:46:55 -0800 (PST) DKIM-Signature: v=1; a=rsa-sha256; c=relaxed/relaxed; d=gmail.com; s=20120113; h=sender:message-id:date:from:user-agent:mime-version:to:cc:subject :references:in-reply-to:content-type:content-transfer-encoding; bh=0lDCi//2iPJevRRHin71yqcIGMEJ4vFlC8n5FDf6hNY=; b=Pc4vOITolZzHdGlJyu3vq3/vRhoqTZJedH+FNoDgqy+wq6I/4ECf8GzG9abVbzmrAM 2r2FSvORywTExc9zsNuuP93wOdSpjGFO4EvYy3tgZNUsg0TLevKEj+ddBHASeTIufzTR j7AKkg1IU0/ZPyV9Ib8lF7cYNqjaFBWuPwrCAdABDbWvjlUyjToCiRifSgXenPoncFbe 1iEqFsIpGp0DtNC9+M3Ppe3VjNlCc2a+QqGolbLOnItOlDLMmr/V2fRzji5hyOgB9Emy jE69rZMo+Z6XL/v/sSFzyAx0fZ+LRNX6Mx7bPU12BOq0TFlORy8e8uWdK/3wO3ww0GzJ 0qTA== Received: by 10.52.17.17 with SMTP id k17mr21371045vdd.106.1354034815748; Tue, 27 Nov 2012 08:46:55 -0800 (PST) Received: from mavbook.mavhome.dp.ua (cpe-67-244-107-195.nyc.res.rr.com. I haven't removed support for model-specific hacks, even moved them into separate file to make easier to handle them. If there is so much interest to this specific model, I don't mind to add it. But first we have to clean up the problem. Provided hints look more like inconsistent combination of hints from different systems. So at first we should find out which of these lines are really useful and why. I had experience with hda devices on FreeBSD 3 times, and they proved spooky. * On Lenovo S10-2 it's not obvious how to set up microphone. Microphone in mixer is up and there is audible signal coming out of speakers from the microphone, but signal doesn't go to pcm input, and skype for example doesn't transmit the voice. I remember I was able to fix the problem manipulating the mixer channels, but it wasn't an obvious fix, and had to be written down on sticker accompanying the netbook. It wasn't just "click the Record check box". * Lenovo ThinkPad T60 also had some sound issues with sound (Intel Corporation 82801DB/DBL/DBM (ICH4/ICH4-L/ICH4-M) AC'97 Audio Controller (rev 01)). Sound just didn't play out of the box. However I don't have BSD on it now. * Desktop with Asus P6T has on-board hda device (Intel 82801JI HDA Controller), and when the sound is playing with the default setup, signal comes from the sound socket on the back of computer, not from the front one. How to make it play on the front? I am sure it is possible with some device hints. I think it makes sense to have the handbook section under Audio dedicated to such devices that usually aren't obviously easy to set up. Brief explanation why the problems arise and whet is the normal way of fixing them would be great. And I imagine someone like Alexander who is an expert in this area would be the perfect candidate to write such section. Often desktops board configure front connectors as separate audio device, that is exactly supported by the HDA driver. Now you have to choose it manually as playback/record source in your application or make it the default sound device system-wide. I am working now on making that more automatic. > I think it makes sense to have the handbook section under Audio > dedicated to such devices that usually aren't obviously easy to set up. > Brief explanation why the problems arise and whet is the normal way of > fixing them would be great. I've written many technical details in snd_hda manual page, but as usual in such cases, the more I am writing, the less people can understand it. If somebody can explain these things in some easy way -- welcome. -- Alexander Motin From owner-freebsd-multimedia@FreeBSD.ORG Tue Nov 27 22:17:52 2012 Return-Path: Delivered-To: freebsd-multimedia@freebsd.org Received: from mx1.freebsd.org (mx1.freebsd.org [69.147.83.52]) by hub.freebsd.org (Postfix) with ESMTP id C5E1BD43; Tue, 27 Nov 2012 22:17:52 +0000 (UTC) (envelope-from vermaden@interia.pl) Received: from smtpo.poczta.interia.pl (smtpo.poczta.interia.pl [217.74.65.205]) by mx1.freebsd.org (Postfix) with ESMTP id 75CDC8FC0C; Tue, 27 Nov 2012 22:17:52 +0000 (UTC) Date: Tue, 27 Nov 2012 23:17:50 +0100 From: vermaden Subject: Re: kern/148741: [sound] Headphones are deaf (do not work) on Lenovo ThinkPad X300 To: Alexander Motin X-Mailer: interia.pl/pf09 In-Reply-To: <50B4EE7C.6050900@FreeBSD.org> References: <201211261511.qAQFBYM6080933@freefall.freebsd.org> <50B45C7F.9080502@rawbw.com> <20121127073752.GF94814@jd.benders.se> <50B4EE7C.6050900@FreeBSD.org> X-Originating-IP: 95.40.61.156 Message-Id: MIME-Version: 1.0 Content-Type: text/plain; charset="UTF-8" Content-Transfer-Encoding: 7bit DKIM-Signature: v=1; a=rsa-sha256; c=relaxed/relaxed; d=interia.pl; s=biztos; t=1354054670; bh=Wj0fnRAHMWCadxPC8nTvLmbGD0nEa3gqrtQUbJEH0uc=; h=Date:From:Subject:To:Cc:X-Mailer:In-Reply-To:References: X-Originating-IP:Message-Id:MIME-Version:Content-Type: Content-Transfer-Encoding; b=aI21I4u3nr0EqRi0tgSIz2UUCtAnRICElqjgL8+GJBAvcP5ZVXIl53zMvB5Kj7IyE RjDu3uNUWdPudrxmyIakGP9hudCftLeBrnET99fBIVWsXwa8ZbCUUmjNGMuNCZW1lt Xp4hMYAwbNCUzmOnlRljR3WITG2lIQ+3kNHkcAlg= Cc: freebsd-multimedia@freebsd.org X-BeenThere: freebsd-multimedia@freebsd.org X-Mailman-Version: 2.1.14 Precedence: list List-Id: Multimedia discussions List-Unsubscribe: , List-Archive: List-Post: List-Help: List-Subscribe: , X-List-Received-Date: Tue, 27 Nov 2012 22:17:52 -0000 "Alexander Motin" pisze: > On 27.11.2012 09:37, Joel Dahl wrote: > > On 26-11-2012 22:23, Yuri wrote: > >> On 11/26/2012 21:59, vermaden wrote:mav@FreeBSD.org: > >>>> Synopsis: [sound] Headphones are deaf (do not work) on Lenovo ThinkPad X300 > >>>> > >>>> State-Changed-From-To: open->closed > >>>> State-Changed-By: mav > >>>> State-Changed-When: Mon Nov 26 15:09:31 UTC 2012 > >>>> State-Changed-Why: > >>>> Proposed hints looks like overkill, but as far as it works, that is OK. > >>>> > >>>> http://www.freebsd.org/cgi/query-pr.cgi?pr=148741 > >>> Closing this PR is OK under one of these conditions: > >>> > >>> - LINK to that X300 specifical configuration/hack PR should be within FreeBSD Handbook. > >>> - Information for X300 specific configuration should be directly in the FreeBSD Handbook. > >> > >> Or there should be the quirks-like mechanism in hda driver incorporating > >> these hints on the device by device level. > > > > We had this in the hda driver before mav rewrote it. You're being very dramatic and over-exaggerating. Also, Unix along with all of its spawn has gone through significant change over the years so if you're implying what people use today is the same thing they were using in the 70's then that's being blatantly dishonest. Maybe in a perfect world all hardware would be supported forever. But there comes a time when, for example, maintaining a driver becomes counter-productive because there simply isn't enough of a user-base to justify the resources spent doing so. Hardware evolves, software evolves, computers evolve -- if you don't want to evolve with it then continue to use the hardware & software from whatever era in computing history of your choosing so long as you understand the burden of supporting that stuff may ultimately rest on your shoulders. AC'97 is for ex. in Lenovo ThinkPad T60 that was still sold in 2007. It is entirely possible that the same chipset was used in later models and maybe is still in manufacturing. Quick search on http://www.bsdstats.org/bt/devices/class/04/subclass/01.html reveals that quite a few systems still use AC'97, particularly "82801AA 8xx Chipset AC'97 Audio Controller" is listed as used 631 times and in fact is the most frequently used particular type of the audio device listed on BSD stats website. I only wish more people shared their hardware with BSD stats. Also this T60 may be obsolete by the latest and greatest standards, but is still a very capable system, can easily run BSD or Linux and would be totally sufficient for someone who only needs to browse the web and check e-mail (read 95% of people). We don't turn our equipment off just 'cos our model no longer on sales shelves. Not all users companies & countries are rich & constantly buying the latest. There's markets for 2nd hand laptops ( inc. eg a shop 2 streets from here). Older hardware can be better & more available: - Cheaper or free (grab the boss's `old' replaced MS PC & install BSD). - On the flat of the bath tub graph curve of engineering reliability: More time for others to discover & document which PCs have exploding laptop batteries & broken in-disk BIOSes, etc. - More time for the public source community to develop drivers. - (My old laptop has much better speakers than my 2 new laptops). Supporting older hardware helps tempt MS users eg: "Rather than buy a new PC to support the latest bloated MS upgrade, why not try install a Free BSD or Linux, more efficient to cope with limited resources on your existing PC - & spend Nothing ! (Or if you must buy a new MS PC, install BSD on the old & sample a Free OS)." My comments were meant to be taken in a general sense, hence why nothing specific was mentioned. There are plenty of examples of old hardware still in use, but that isn't really what I was addressing. > I only wish more people shared their hardware with BSD stats. > Also this T60 may be obsolete by the latest and greatest standards, but is > still a very capable system, can easily run BSD or Linux and would be > totally sufficient for someone who only needs to browse the web and check > e-mail (read 95% of people). Yes, indeed. We passed the tipping point along time ago where computers became `over-powered` in regards to most users needs. I fully believe in and support pc recycling. However, you do get to a point where it becomes unreasonable to continue to support old hardware within new software because it's simply not a good use of resources to do so. Should a person spend their valued time wrestling to keep old hardware working? I don't know a whole lot of devs who say yes to that question. There's a reason support for old stuff decays or flat out gets thrown in the trash. If you choose to drive a 20 year old car, you've got to accept the fact that there will likely be some issues using it. I agree that support of the particular hardware piece should cease should it become obsolete and only diminishingly tiny percentage of users still have it. The only point of contention here is when to declare this to be the case. However, in this particular case there is no reason to believe that this sound chipset gets scarce. On the contrary, significant percentage of the user base have it and it might even still be in production. That's why FreeBSD shouldn't discontinue its support. We already live in such societies. At some point there's not enough manpower to support everything, but I agree, there are so many usages for old computers and there are still many people who continue using QL emulations and stuff like this. In the past computers were tools, nowadays most computers are toys. Promotion does awake needs of stupid people. The funny thing is that this already started in the past. A stupid teacher once said, that the C64 is a toy and PCs are real computers. Nonsense! It depends to the usage. You can use the C64 and other simple computers for serious work and you can play nutty games on the best computer hardware available. Btw. old parallel ports did support relatively good MIDI, IIRC Ac'97. Regarding to the jitter, no serious professional musician will use USB MIDI. Fortunately we've PCI, but here the problem is, that PCI will die out and for FLOSS this is an issue, because new hardware unlikely is supported. On my machine there are still two Envy24 PCI cards mounted, but my new PCIe card, a RME HDSPe AIO is only pseudo-supported, the reason for me to take a look at FreeBSD. Drivers are a serious issue or FLOSS :(. 2 Cents, Ralf From owner-freebsd-multimedia@FreeBSD.ORG Wed Nov 28 06:46:04 2012 Return-Path: Delivered-To: freebsd-multimedia@freebsd.org Received: from mx1.freebsd.org (mx1.freebsd.org [69.147.83.52]) by hub.freebsd.org (Postfix) with ESMTP id 6E7C1257 for ; Wed, 28 Nov 2012 06:46:04 +0000 (UTC) (envelope-from ralf.mardorf@rocketmail.com) Received: from nm4.bullet.mail.ird.yahoo.com (nm4.bullet.mail.ird.yahoo.com [77.238.189.61]) by mx1.freebsd.org (Postfix) with ESMTP id A63558FC1C for ; Wed, 28 Nov 2012 06:46:03 +0000 (UTC) Received: from [77.238.189.48] by nm4.bullet.mail.ird.yahoo.com with NNFMP; 28 Nov 2012 06:46:02 -0000 Received: from [217.146.188.213] by tm1.bullet.mail.ird.yahoo.com with NNFMP; 28 Nov 2012 06:46:02 -0000 Received: from [127.0.0.1] by smtp109.mail.ird.yahoo.com with NNFMP; 28 Nov 2012 06:46:02 -0000 DKIM-Signature: v=1; a=rsa-sha256; c=relaxed/relaxed; d=rocketmail.com; s=s1024; t=1354085162; bh=dwJ4ZEOI+UqoANBoEnNQ1zIyukyK/m6Mdsniho6aKuU=; h=X-Yahoo-Newman-Id:X-Yahoo-Newman-Property:X-YMail-OSG:X-Yahoo-SMTP:Received:Message-ID:Subject:From:To:Date:In-Reply-To:References:Content-Type:X-Mailer:Mime-Version:Content-Transfer-Encoding; b=o30MMK/qWnz5l+JBmmZyZjufb/p86aQ9MIsi61dpMCo8cZ6fMI/HGmwg34OH77o+qgxa2esixEwL95PGqo53ZxXpEKhUbjn7X+Va9ivRvMLYuE6mfgiqMjIMCKGwaJwK7r0p7Hgm7ukHo/iWj2RItHR5MRjkF555aO004qW9XAg= X-Yahoo-Newman-Id: 369760.67352.bm@smtp109.mail.ird.yahoo.com X-Yahoo-Newman-Property: ymail-3 X-YMail-OSG: oWa5yeIVM1lZb3FZe9vrEtirqcfspxl_KsiFH97tWbs.8CE sF294uSb4WtgTj95ClNlAFC7Y2eqGTPKgjWJRDl1lh..j591SS.Ttn9oLH7n fix3E1tMTAHGy0CqWfvFa7YN2NCcHrexEHMpHUNbkX2CADMWIkWqIIwAij9f o2O.t9uNSMmQnGamtXIV5GHU8FUf.eGtjZloOdgUA2uVb5H3hZsvqUPjf8kv kdhWPQHbZB8Rr42.pztlzyBqvReFTN_Pwf4ZNPALoAAkt_cdx.sp4SRJq58x pqKzHXeXs4R3CRF_eI36wzbMHO_WZkTEScLfqJ8Zz4PDVt94xC1zDRf.CaS6 CkaaCLnepUG5aNu9yFFU2stJkp7wT2gYiTpz.GsnPztaBQ70LIc2mHak6oLH ZuKhhJKz5PBRMWPtmOa8S6O4QnD.HCmK.NcWIPQ-- X-Yahoo-SMTP: BeMCPs2swBABTJ3kAeEiC_hE0mz8jRexLddJfD8pI2j32fOacjBmXg-- Received: from [85.182.21.51] (ralf.mardorf@85.182.21.51 with login) by smtp109.mail.ird.yahoo.com with SMTP; 27 Nov 2012 22:46:02 -0800 PST Message-ID: <1354085161.2528.81.camel@q> Subject: Re: Support for "old" hardware (was:Re: kern/148741: [sound] Headphones are deaf (do not work) on Lenovo ThinkPad X300) From: Ralf Mardorf To: freebsd-multimedia@freebsd.org Date: Wed, 28 Nov 2012 07:46:01 +0100 In-Reply-To: <50B5A26B.2090306@rawbw.com> References: <20121127231130.106340@gmx.com> <50B568E7.5070305@rawbw.com> <50B5A26B.2090306@rawbw.com> Content-Type: text/plain; charset="UTF-8" X-Mailer: Evolution 3.6.0-0ubuntu3 Mime-Version: 1.0 Content-Transfer-Encoding: 7bit X-BeenThere: freebsd-multimedia@freebsd.org X-Mailman-Version: 2.1.14 Precedence: list List-Id: Multimedia discussions List-Unsubscribe: , List-Archive: List-Post: List-Help: List-Subscribe: , X-List-Received-Date: Wed, 28 Nov 2012 06:46:04 -0000 I've 3 old mobos, I'll ditch two of them, but I planed to keep one, an ASRock K7VT2. For me, HDA was worked correctly on all devices I've tried it on, with minimum fuss or issues. The only issues I've ever had have been where the BIOS does not correctly indicate what the sources/sinks are, and a little bit of tweaking is required, eg to have front audio muting speakers when connected. This does require some tweaks, and the whole cad/nid syntax is slightly confusing - I got mine right by voodoo, I think. If there are budding technical writers out there who do understand this, and fancy contributing, I think that would be fantastic.
