I have traditionally not worried that Linux emulation would not be sufficient --- a) many things come as source and b) linux code is by definition public --- so we'll have none of the problem a-la-wine. But our linux emulation is based on 5-year-old version of linux (ie: fedora core 10). That, combined with the laundry list of binaries requiring modern linux libraries (Steam and Multicraft (a minecraft framework) are at the head of my list) have me in a bit of bind. Is anyone working on a newer linux-base port? Now when I run VirtualBox WinXP guest from root terminal, my cd is accessable fine. When I run from user VirtualBox complains with following error message: Cannot open host device '/dev/cd0' for read/write access. Check the permissions of that device (VERR_ACCESS_DENIED). I am really stuck because I followed precisely wiki.freebsd.org/VirtualBoxmanual on host CD/DVD access. With exception that I have not loaded atapicam module, but I suppose it is not relevant as I read in Updating Notes of FreeBSD 9.0 that cam drivers are defaulted in kernel. Even so when I run kldload atapicam I get following error: kldload: can't load atapicam: No such file or directory I double check also what happens with my user, it has access to all the groups required: wheel, operator, vboxusers. ls -l /dev/cd0 gives following: crw-rw---- 1 root operator 0, 85 Sep 10 18:46 /dev/cd0 Any help appreciated Juris From owner-freebsd-emulation@FreeBSD.ORG Tue Sep 10 19:32:59 2013 Return-Path: Delivered-To: freebsd-emulation@freebsd.org Received: from mx1.freebsd.org (mx1.freebsd.org [8.8.178.115]) (using TLSv1 with cipher ADH-AES256-SHA (256/256 bits)) (No client certificate requested) by hub.freebsd.org (Postfix) with ESMTP id B7E482D2 for ; Tue, 10 Sep 2013 19:32:59 +0000 (UTC) (envelope-from feld@FreeBSD.org) Received: from out3-smtp.messagingengine.com (out3-smtp.messagingengine.com [66.111.4.27]) (using TLSv1.2 with cipher AECDH-AES256-SHA (256/256 bits)) (No client certificate requested) by mx1.freebsd.org (Postfix) with ESMTPS id 8D46025A7 for ; Tue, 10 Sep 2013 19:32:59 +0000 (UTC) Received: from compute3.internal (compute3.nyi.mail.srv.osa [10.202.2.43]) by gateway1.nyi.mail.srv.osa (Postfix) with ESMTP id 6EBF32067D for ; Tue, 10 Sep 2013 15:32:58 -0400 (EDT) Received: from web3 ([10.202.2.213]) by compute3.internal (MEProxy); Tue, 10 Sep 2013 15:32:58 -0400 DKIM-Signature: v=1; a=rsa-sha1; c=relaxed/relaxed; d= messagingengine.com; h=message-id:from:to:mime-version :content-transfer-encoding:content-type:subject:date:in-reply-to :references; s=smtpout; bh=hXWMszMK7Fyu1eti3H+cryVH7e4=; b=pyY4S 9YurnFgeQ4caeYz0mOKm2cpIxeB2W3MSMqLkz1jTjkiunRh5NVLdIQcb5kOcOp8R zUlZ+bIwjZ6m9el7vFHUcFfVpIUdLFNNLb0oMQgoGsnTITx3MmxB3a31hTp2kR77 Qke+3cmvntPuDG7pWlnBKyah2F6YZdLBzxCqUs= Received: by web3.nyi.mail.srv.osa (Postfix, from userid 99) id 51210B000AE; Tue, 10 Sep 2013 15:32:58 -0400 (EDT) Message-Id: <1378841578.12571.20341845.26279920@webmail.messagingengine.com> X-Sasl-Enc: oMwEZHd7CPMdKUXGekr4sKnzKxkHitcazwNICe0LhK4s 1378841578 From: Mark Felder To: freebsd-emulation@freebsd.org MIME-Version: 1.0 Content-Transfer-Encoding: 7bit Content-Type: text/plain X-Mailer: MessagingEngine.com Webmail Interface - ajax-15090c31 Subject: Re: Problems with CD access on Virtualbox Date: Tue, 10 Sep 2013 14:32:58 -0500 In-Reply-To: References: X-BeenThere: freebsd-emulation@freebsd.org X-Mailman-Version: 2.1.14 Precedence: list List-Id: Development of Emulators of other operating systems List-Unsubscribe: , List-Archive: List-Post: List-Help: List-Subscribe: , X-List-Received-Date: Tue, 10 Sep 2013 19:32:59 -0000 On Tue, Sep 10, 2013, at 14:26, Juris Kaminskis wrote: > > ls -l /dev/cd0 gives following: > > crw-rw---- 1 root operator 0, 85 Sep 10 18:46 /dev/cd0 > Only root and operator have access to that device. Then start up your virtualbox and it should have access. I was fighting with that last night, and just now figured it out. The user should be a member of the operator group, but also must have rw permissions on /dev/cd0, /dev/xpt0, and /dev/pass0... and here's the trick: there can be more than one /dev/pass device. As soon as I added pass1 and pass2 to /etc/devfs.conf, it worked: perm cd0 0660 perm pass0 0660 perm pass1 0660 perm pass2 0660 perm xpt0 0660 HAL is not needed. Just a tiny background. I'm just experimenting with getting rid of in-base gcc and using compiler from ports whenever possible. And gcc46 produces much better code then our gcc42. When I change USE_GCC to yes everything compiles and install perfectly. But when I try to run VirtualBox I get this: VirtualBox: Error -610 in supR3HardenedMainInitRuntime! VirtualBox: dlopen("/usr/local/lib/virtualbox/VBoxRT.so",) failed: /usr/lib/libstdc++.so.6: version GLIBCXX_3.4.15 required by /usr/local/lib/virtualbox/VBoxRT.so not found VirtualBox: Tip! It may help to reinstall VirtualBox. Substituting /usr/lib/libstdc++.so.6 with /usr/local/lib/gcc46/libstdc++.so.6 fixes that and VirtualBox is fully functional, but this looks like wrong library resolution order or what? Can this be fixed somewhere in the port or should I brag the guys that stay behind adopting clang? Or is this rather a problem with gcc port? -- Sphinx of black quartz, judge my vow.
