ESnet is located at the Lawrence Berkeley National Lab (Berkeley Lab, not to be confused with Lawrence Livermore National Lab--also a DoE facility), which is a Department of Energy - Office of Science Laboratory located in Berkeley (NOT Livermore), California. It's just up the hill from the UC Berkeley and his a spectacular view of San Francisco, the SF Bay, and the Golden Gate. As mentioned below, although ESnet is physically located at LBNL, its job is to connect all of the scientific National Labs via what is currently a 100G high-speed data network. It's a small but diverse group of highly-dedicated, highly-motivated people, and we're seeking a FreeBSD sysadmin. Infrastructure Services System Administrator: FreeBSD-75623 Organization:SN-Scientific Networking Description Lawrence Berkeley National Lab (Berkeley Lab), a pioneer in research and science, has an immediate opening for an Infrastructure Services System Administrator (Computer Systems Engineer (CSE) 2) within the Scientific Networking Division. At the core of the Scientific Networking Division is ESnet, the Energy Sciences Network. ESnet interconnects the entire national laboratory system, including its supercomputer centers and user facilities – enabling tens of thousands of scientists to transfer data, access remote resources, and collaborate productively. ESnet is widely-regarded as a technical pioneer, and is currently the fastest science network in the world. The successful candidate join ESnet’s Infrastructure Group, which manages a broad range of services and technologies, including blade servers, multiple flavors of Linux and Unix, mass storage, IT service management/automation tools, security infrastructure and virtualization platforms. The primary responsibilities of this position are to perform system administration for ESnet’s infrastructure supporting core services, security services, and network measurement servers. Experience with FreeBSD, Linux, cfengine, Service-Now, and cyber security tools is critical. Work will include new infrastructure deployment projects, as well as operational support of established systems and services. SPECIFIC RESPONSIBILITIES: Serve as a core team member of ESnet Infrastructure Group, with a focus on daily Linux, FreeBSD systems administration tasks – including building / provisioning, configuring, and patching. Perform complete lifecycle administration for ESnet core and security infrastructure: specifying hardware, ordering equipment, installing and supporting implementations Establishing system monitoring using a variety of tools, including Nagios. set up monitoring, including development of specialized Nagios plug-ins Plan and execute infrastructure and security systems projects: gather requirements, align services with requirements and stakeholder needs, and devise scalable, robust, cost-effective and innovating approaches to meet project requirements. Communicate project status with stakeholders; prioritize project work with day-to-day operational tasks. KEY SUCCESS FACTORS: BA/BS in computer science or related field or equivalent experience A minimum of 4 years of experience with system administration of Linux/FreeBSD systems Automated install and configuration management experience including jumpstart/kickstart, puppet/cfengine Experience with package management, creation and deployment such as FreeBSD ports/packages, rpm and dpkg Experience with Nagios, Cacti, SNMP and custom monitoring and alerting Strong understanding of complex TCP/IP networks. Ability to work on multiple tasks and respond to rapidly changing priorities. Works well independently as well as on collaborative teams. Proven track record of successful customer commitment in a service delivery organization Strong written and interpersonal communication skills, plus willingness to document Ability to foster positive work relationships and resolve technical and interpersonal conflicts with diplomacy and tact Additional desired qualifications: Experience managing technologies relevant to current and future Infrastructure Group projects, including HP blade servers, Cfengine, Jumpstart, VMware, ticketing systems, mass storage. Experience with open-source systems administration and automation tools. Familiarity and experience with IT service management Familiarity with DOE Office of Science research programs, and/or Research and Education networking communities in the US or abroad.
