After next restart (the ath0 times out) the interrupts increase but the rate is going down. I noticed that after restart from Windows and working wifi if I restart /etc/rc.d/netif the wifi is working again. If I shutdown wlan0 and bring it up again then I wlan0 doesn't get address but ath0 is not timing out. I can still get a list with the available APs around. There is also output from ifconfig when the wlan is not working (ifconfig.txt). After some more deeper investigation it seems to me that the problem appears after starting X with Gnome. I will continue investigating with "reboot"/"halt -p" and inform you. BTW do you think that starting Gnome session (using startx, as I haven't set auto start of X if this is of any importance) can cause problems - in Gnome I have no settings for the network in the "System->Network" application and I start it with normal user? "halt"/"shutdown" of system. If "reboot" is carried out than there is no problem and the wifi works properly (even if done from Gnome - Gnome seems to have no relation to the problem). So what could lead to "ath0: time out" after shutting down or halting the system? I noticed that there are irq storms on irq 17 which is the wifi irq (interrupt storm detected on "irq17:"; throttling interrupt source). Something else that I am not sure to have relevance - after shutdown during the start-up ath0 is reported to use autoselect mode 11g: (below is from dmesg) ath0: flags=8843 metric 0 mtu 2290 ether 00:19:7e:91:xx:xx nd6 options=29 media: IEEE 802.11 Wireless Ethernet autoselect mode 11g status: associated After the boot has finished the mode changes to 11a: #ifconfig ath0 ath0: flags=8843 metric 0 mtu 2290 ether 00:19:7e:91:xx:xx nd6 options=29 media: IEEE 802.11 Wireless Ethernet autoselect mode 11a status: associated Do you have any idea where to look for now? Regards, Lyubomir P.S. I will try to play with acpi_ibm.ko and see if things change if I make it auto-load. For AC<->battery changes, /etc/devd.conf already has devd perform: # Switch power profiles when the AC line state changes. notify 10 { match "system" "ACPI"; match "subsystem" "ACAD"; action "/etc/rc.d/power_profile $notify"; }; You won't need to mess with power_profile but it's instructive and logs power changes to /var/log/messages. If you made that, say: action "/etc/rc.d/power_profile $notify && /root/my_script $notify"; then my_script can do whatever, with or without using parameter $notify if '# kldload speaker && spkrtest' makes useful noises on the speaker, then it's easy to make up a couple of satisfactory and noticeable alert 'tunes'. See speaker(4). I used these for years on an old Compaq with APM, which also could be configured to run alerts at every 10% battery level change, charging or discharging, enabling such as suspend on low battery where that wasn't built in, or other actions to save power. devd.conf(5) as well as /etc/devd.conf shows: ACPI Events related to the ACPI subsystem. Subsystem ACAD AC line state ($notify=0x00 is offline, 0x01 is online). Button Button state ($notify=0x00 is power, 0x01 is sleep). CMBAT Battery events. Lid Lid state ($notify=0x00 is closed, 0x01 is open). Thermal Thermal zone events. with an example also for thermal overheating pending shutdown, but I'm yet to find examples of any CMBAT battery events, regarding your first concern. That is, I've wondered about this myself .. Can anyone say, or point to, which ACPI CMBAT events get to devd? cheers, Ian From owner-freebsd-mobile@FreeBSD.ORG Sat Jun 15 14:11:02 2013 Return-Path: Delivered-To: freebsd-mobile@freebsd.org Received: from mx1.freebsd.org (mx1.freebsd.org [IPv6:2001:1900:2254:206a::19:1]) by hub.freebsd.org (Postfix) with ESMTP id D94B99C2 for ; Sat, 15 Jun 2013 14:11:02 +0000 (UTC) (envelope-from jrm@ftfl.ca) Received: from mail-qa0-x229.google.com (mail-qa0-x229.google.com [IPv6:2607:f8b0:400d:c00::229]) by mx1.freebsd.org (Postfix) with ESMTP id 996AB1944 for ; Sat, 15 Jun 2013 14:11:00 +0000 (UTC) Received: by mail-qa0-f41.google.com with SMTP id f14so700132qak.0 for ; Sat, 15 Jun 2013 07:10:59 -0700 (PDT) DKIM-Signature: v=1; a=rsa-sha256; c=relaxed/relaxed; d=ftfl.ca; s=google; h=from:to:cc:subject:references:date:in-reply-to:message-id :user-agent:mime-version:content-type; bh=CXHNyclb93G1Popvig9EjNcKOaT3+QC2IXg2B3Smqe8=; b=GPoqsL74CNq/DVtL2KnohvpxXRt5V6B2bGRBflhq5001y8jsSBKVzC/0LxcVqPcvwo Xsra89uLTn8zr+wFQeKs5fXdpSKD+Ovz9qk/3VnTD/N0s6OtSzHKlWEFlGX+P/4nNbYm N01dufOQPGuv6oHuO9dC5ydS1j7t7vSEp3VA8= X-Google-DKIM-Signature: v=1; a=rsa-sha256; c=relaxed/relaxed; d=google.com; s=20120113; h=from:to:cc:subject:references:date:in-reply-to:message-id :user-agent:mime-version:content-type:x-gm-message-state; bh=CXHNyclb93G1Popvig9EjNcKOaT3+QC2IXg2B3Smqe8=; b=Gv8qLNjTa514L5f465M+c5hFvX/fhLGD37qpufKTYCgO6Jt/7q8kpu/FloUUeVpfin a2giZuj+USXVcYr2NgjY7nGDNZvfd2b6vE7pkxb3jWkPKd/rGUsPOo8guwhMYc9FZw9y WNwHQsWIuxJNj1Fq0UG708BUYkOWSbwI2IBy6mLgjNzbi+EXh5PJrHr9rdfYPg46ueGb WDtrHL9mH9aWodRPxtiUHQTeqCEN+9rFHULwiNUhCbUfRet3msyNYlY4D/6vtQes4UsX TnVcqMHZl+lCqxOSzmi85b8meGkmyjlW0Hi7D0ZSUwzKtW33y1I5La84gMUXrQ+zjYMX SAfw== X-Received: by 10.224.38.74 with SMTP id a10mr7470326qae.42.1371305459820; Sat, 15 Jun 2013 07:10:59 -0700 (PDT) Received: from gly.ath.cx.ftfl.ca (Dynamic34-29.Dynamic.Dal.Ca. Maybe this is the source of the problem. After loading speaker.ko and running spkrtest I didn't hear anything. I verified in mixer that the speaker was at 100:100. When unplugging / plugging in AC I only see the following in /var/log/messages: Jun 15 10:58:15 bravo power_profile: changed to 'economy' Jun 15 10:58:19 bravo power_profile: changed to 'performance'. The 'normal' IBM/Lenovo sound up/down/mute buttons don't do anything? If so that's possibly an ACPI / BIOS issue I know nothing about. It is running acpi_ibm.ko I suppose? If so, what does 'sysctl dev.acpi_ibm' have to say? > When unplugging / plugging in AC I only see the following in > /var/log/messages: > > Jun 15 10:58:15 bravo power_profile: changed to 'economy' > Jun 15 10:58:19 bravo power_profile: changed to 'performance'. That's all you'll see, indicating relevant performance|economy settings for cx_lowest and cpu_freq from /etc/defaults/rc.conf being applied. I have a T500 on loan with broken keyboard. If I get that fixed or find a USB keyboard this week I'll check if it behaves the same as your T530. Right; there's been quite a lot about this issue in freebsd-acpi for the last year and more, and various Lenovo *530 have come up (Y530 & E530). The bottom line seems to be that you need to patch acpi_ibm, or run stable/9 to pick up the patched version. I suggest browsing the acpi@ archives esp. for thread: "what is required to support a new laptop?" which highlights some differences between [45]20 and 530 series; I'm not sure anything I can find on a T500 is likely to help, but I'll see. A lot of the above is folks trying to get brightness controls working, but maybe if you get acpi_ibm loaded and functional it may help this? cheers (and out for now, Ian
