I apologise for my late reply, but please don't do this. If you think this approach has merit, please argue its case on perl5-porters instead of subtly forking perl5 in FreeBSD's ports collection, violating POLA. Indeed, the Porter's Handbook discourages you from doing as you propose: http://www.freebsd.org/doc/en_US.ISO8859-1/books/porters-handbook/dads-freedback.html Perl5 is actively developed in the open. If you think you have a good idea that benefits perl, please discuss your idea with the Perl5 maintainers so that other operating systems, and FreeBSD users who don't use ports/packages can benefit from your work. I'll try to explain better: You propose replacing major.minor.patch with major.minor for Perl 5 in FreeBSD's ports and packages. If this change makes sense, why restrict it to these? Why not share it with perl users everywhere? Furthermore, by restricting discussion to this list, and not perl5-porters, you fail to validate your assumption that the patch level of the version number will never include API/ABI changes. If you haven't validated this assumption, what do you plan to do if it turns out to be false? As for POLA, perl users everywhere will expect major.minor.patch because it's how perl installs itself. If FreeBSD changes this for ports and packages, we become a not-quite-perl ghetto that subtly forks the standard distribution. I hope I have expressed my concerns better this time. So what does that mean for the future of Perl-5.18 & FreeBSD? I haven't seen any unusual chatter in other forums for other OSs regarding a problem with Perl-5.18. Hell, even SlashDot has not had any negative chatter that I am aware of and they are always the first to jump on any software problem, real or imaginary. Is this a FreeBSD "specific" problem and if so, what is being done to eradicate it? -- Jerry ♔ Disclaimer: off-list followups get on-list replies or get ignored. Is this a FreeBSD "specific" > problem and if so, what is being done to eradicate it? >=20 This is not a FreeBSD "specific" problem given that Marc Espie is from Open= BSD and so was speaking of problems found on OpenBSD. using google I found the = said mail quite quickly: http://mail-index.netbsd.org/tech-pkg/2013/06/03/msg011435.html Where Marc gives example of changes in perl 5.18 that can lead to breakage. regards, Bapt --4LwthZj+AV2mq5CX Content-Type: application/pgp-signature -----BEGIN PGP SIGNATURE----- Version: GnuPG v2.0.19 (FreeBSD) iEYEARECAAYFAlG67AkACgkQ8kTtMUmk6EwsyQCgkJSDpFtTeaxViQUtFYMk6FYt feMAn3G11YS/EbryEaNeTjVPCGV/SGTm =C+UO -----END PGP SIGNATURE----- --4LwthZj+AV2mq5CX-- From owner-freebsd-perl@FreeBSD.ORG Fri Jun 14 10:16:54 2013 Return-Path: Delivered-To: perl@freebsd.org Received: from mx1.freebsd.org (mx1.freebsd.org [IPv6:2001:1900:2254:206a::19:1]) by hub.freebsd.org (Postfix) with ESMTP id 1307E61F for ; Fri, 14 Jun 2013 10:16:54 +0000 (UTC) (envelope-from kaltheat@zoho.com) Received: from sender1.zohomail.com (sender1.zohomail.com [72.5.230.103]) by mx1.freebsd.org (Postfix) with ESMTP id DCF64165F for ; Fri, 14 Jun 2013 10:16:53 +0000 (UTC) DomainKey-Signature: a=rsa-sha1; q=dns; c=nofws; s=zapps768; d=zoho.com; h=date:from:to:subject:message-id:mime-version:content-type:user-agent:sender; b=NRXOvjekIMA44JMe/dSRaLMU7kyKwou8yWL9H5sX0KurSZqRMkJwDJLnesSZJ+G0jy6a5CDNfIY9 14VkzB+lssqSrjeHEx+FDSIQKzsehRiEZPLoJvinGNMZUn7+o2Gc Received: from sol (210-156-103-86.dynamic.dsl.tng.de [86.103.156.210]) by mx.zohomail.com with SMTPS id 1371203935568470.4584619099671; Fri, 14 Jun 2013 02:58:55 -0700 (PDT) Date: Fri, 14 Jun 2013 11:58:47 +0200 From: kaltheat@googlemail.com To: freebsd-questions@freebsd.org, perl@FreeBSD.org, python@FreeBSD.org Subject: perl threaded, python threaded Message-ID: <20130614095837.GA2047@sol> MIME-Version: 1.0 Content-Type: text/plain; charset=us-ascii Content-Disposition: inline User-Agent: Mutt/1.5.21 (2010-09-15) Sender: kaltheat@zoho.com X-ZohoMailClient: External X-Zoho-Virus-Status: 2 X-BeenThere: freebsd-perl@freebsd.org X-Mailman-Version: 2.1.14 Precedence: list List-Id: maintainer of a number of perl-related ports List-Unsubscribe: , List-Archive: List-Post: List-Help: List-Subscribe: , X-List-Received-Date: Fri, 14 Jun 2013 10:16:54 -0000 Hi, could anyone tell me why it is obviously that difficult to get perl or python working with threaded support? Each time I tested to use threaded feature in perl or python on different machines with different FreeBSD-versions something went wrong. When I switched back everything compiled smoothly. Maybe this was already discussed somewhere. Then please give me the link. Regards, kaltheat
