If I would provide and maintain a production environment, in which stability and reliability is important for my customers, I would not install any software classified as beta as long as there is no important reason to do otherwise (and even a non-beta release would require heaps of testing). Not because a non-beta release is better or more stable, but because I am in a bad position for discussion with the customers, if something goes really wrong with the beta, regardless of how well it was tested. Often, this is due to a better alternative having become available and/or the cessation of development on the existing port. In some cases, ports are marked for removal because they fail to build and install correctly from their sources, or otherwise fail in operation. The ports, and the reason and date that they have been scheduled for removal, are listed below. If no one has stepped forward before that time to propose a way to fix the problems (such as via a PR), the ports will be deleted. portname: lang/python26 description: Interpreted object-oriented programming language maintainer: python@FreeBSD.org deprecated because: This port will reach it's EoL upstream soon, please migrate to lang/python27 expiration date: 2013-10-01 build errors: none. overview: http://portsmon.FreeBSD.org/portoverview.py?category=lang&portname=python26 portname: lang/python31 description: Interpreted object-oriented programming language maintainer: python@FreeBSD.org deprecated because: This port will reach it's EoL upstream soon, please migrate to lang/python33 expiration date: 2014-06-01 build errors: none. overview: http://portsmon.FreeBSD.org/portoverview.py?category=lang&portname=python31 If this problem is one that you are already aware of, please accept our apologies and ignore this message. One minor issue remains: lang/python right now deals only with either python2.X OR python3.X. This means that, if you have set 2.x as PYTHON_DEFAULT_VERSION and are going to install a python 3.x port, lang/python will not create a bin/python3 symlink. This can become an annoying inconsistency. The cleanest approach might be to create a lang/python3 meta port, which handles the different python 3.x versions correctly and either move lang/python to lang/python2 (for naming) or let lang/python deal only with the python2.X ports. To avoid unwanted side effects, I would go for lang/python3 and let lang/python deal with python2.X ports only. I'll create a lang/python3 meta port and, if everything works as expected and the impact on the ports tree is as low as possible, will commit it on the next weekend after the the 9.2 branch.
