I don't have time to debug this currently. To prevent KBD X11 driver unload by /usr/ports/x11-drivers/xf86-input-keyboard change this in the source code: { - xf86AddInputDriver(&KBD, NULL, 0); + xf86AddInputDriver(&KBD, module, 0); return module; } The problem is deeper. When X11 sees that the keyboard is gone it issues some IOCTLs on /dev/console, like the keyboard MODE and then no more keys are received. See using ktrace on Xorg. This is a shared device receiving key-presses for all keyboards as far as I can see and it should only be programmed once. This is currently not handled. Inside the file referenced below code is present to set "x11_driver" to "kbd". Probably changing this will affect the outcome too: /usr/local/share/hal/fdi/policy/10osvendor/10-x11-input.fdi How to reproduce: Plug two USB keyboards using a HAL enabled Xorg server. Unplug one keyboard. Input from the other keyboard disappears until some other keyboard device is plugged again! --HPS From owner-freebsd-x11@FreeBSD.ORG Mon Feb 11 11:06:55 2013 Return-Path: Delivered-To: freebsd-x11@FreeBSD.org Received: from mx1.freebsd.org (mx1.FreeBSD.org [8.8.178.115]) by hub.freebsd.org (Postfix) with ESMTP id F1C5C2F9 for ; Mon, 11 Feb 2013 11:06:55 +0000 (UTC) (envelope-from owner-bugmaster@FreeBSD.org) Received: from freefall.freebsd.org (freefall.freebsd.org [IPv6:2001:1900:2254:206c::16:87]) by mx1.freebsd.org (Postfix) with ESMTP id D2CD81BEA for ; Mon, 11 Feb 2013 11:06:55 +0000 (UTC) Received: from freefall.freebsd.org (localhost [127.0.0.1]) by freefall.freebsd.org (8.14.6/8.14.6) with ESMTP id r1BB6t3E081495 for ; Mon, 11 Feb 2013 11:06:55 GMT (envelope-from owner-bugmaster@FreeBSD.org) Received: (from gnats@localhost) by freefall.freebsd.org (8.14.6/8.14.6/Submit) id r1BB6tIx081493 for freebsd-x11@FreeBSD.org; Mon, 11 Feb 2013 11:06:55 GMT (envelope-from owner-bugmaster@FreeBSD.org) Date: Mon, 11 Feb 2013 11:06:55 GMT Message-Id: <201302111106.r1BB6tIx081493@freefall.freebsd.org> X-Authentication-Warning: freefall.freebsd.org: gnats set sender to owner-bugmaster@FreeBSD.org using -f From: FreeBSD bugmaster To: freebsd-x11@FreeBSD.org Subject: Current problem reports assigned to freebsd-x11@FreeBSD.org X-BeenThere: freebsd-x11@freebsd.org X-Mailman-Version: 2.1.14 Precedence: list List-Id: X11 on FreeBSD -- maintaining and support List-Unsubscribe: , List-Archive: List-Post: List-Help: List-Subscribe: , X-List-Received-Date: Mon, 11 Feb 2013 11:06:56 -0000 Note: to view an individual PR, use: http://www.freebsd.org/cgi/query-pr.cgi?pr=(number). Unplug one keyboard. > Input from the other keyboard disappears until some other keyboard device is > plugged again! > > --HPS This sounds very similar to what happens when I undock my laptop from a dock which has a couple of USB keyboards attached. All keys stop responding in X, but I can use the built in keyboard to switch to a VT, hit a few keys, switch back to X and the built in keyboard has recovered in X. The uwacom module is no longer necessary now that webcamd can run the Linux drivers. The only advantage of the uwacom module is its BSD license but as the bug submitter said, I have not had the time to update the module to work with FreeBSD >= 8.0. I do remember that installing textproc/docbook-xml-430 seemed to have fixed the building process of x11-toolkits/libXmu, but due to my lack of understanding of the said ports, I cannot say why. The bug report with ID ports/169561 seems to describe the same error, but the reporter probably has a better understanding of what the root of the problem is. This PR can be closed. Removing this line allowed the build to proceed just fine. Kudos to Niclas for noticing it as a potential culprit.
