VESA mode brings up install GUI, but dumps back to blank/black screen after it's done setting up X. I have attempted the installation with the external monitor. Same problem as before. On a random restart of the laptop I've made contact with X and I've continued with a normal GUI install and after pressing finish allowed the restart to be faced back with the same problem -- X has left the building. Others are having similar problems. I was advised by PCBSD developers that this is an issue with the new Intel driver and asked me to report it you guys. They gave me the following information: Specific information about the intel driver: Versions: Quote: xf86-video-intel-2.21.9 libdrm-2.4.46 The actual ports are: Quote: x11-drivers/xf86-video-intel graphics/libdrm Both ports were compiled with the "WITH_NEW_XORG" flag set. I had to deal with this too, once, when I was doing a PC-BSD install on a netbook with Intel graphics. I worked around it by hard-powering down the machine after this part of the install, booting into single user mode, and then somewhere in /var/ I believe is a dotfile (.something) that either has info inside it or just the existence of the dotfile determines which part of setup has been completed. Deleting this file (or editing -- can't remember) and rebooting continued to the next part of setup. Unfortunately there's not much that can be done to fix this until the VT switching for the new DRI/KVM/Intel/whatever framework is finished. I don't know if there is an ETA on this work, and it may not even show up in FreeBSD 9.x. It would be nice if PC-BSD could detect you're using an Intel driver and modify their install process slightly to eliminate the need for a hack/workaround... As far as timing is concerned, see the latest FreeBSD project quarterly status update: "The first deliverables of the project, including moused(8), ukbd(4), and KMS support are expected to arrive around the middle or end of August 2013. The whole project is expected to complete in November 2013." Of course, these will be delivered to head, not stable, at least initially. It's been over a year since I have run -current, butthis will get me back to life on the cutting, and likely bleeding edge. -- R. Hi! I am not 100% sure that that GPU is supported by the kms driver yet... Do you have any way to hook up a serial console to the machine to maybe be able to grab some output. From a first look at things it certainly looks like something goes wrong when setting up the graphics stack. As others have pointed out, once the KMS kernel module is loaded, the console is unusable, so that's why the screen remains black once X has exited (for any reason). Is it also possible to get a dmesg as well as a complete X log (usually from /var/log/Xorg.0.log). Hopefully the KMS aware console will make it in time for FreeBSD 10.0, although that is a somewhat tight schedule. > > Of course, these will be delivered to head, not stable, at least initially. > It's been over a year since I have run -current, butthis will get me back > to life on the cutting, and likely bleeding edge. > Current has been reasonably stable, at least for me. When I properly configured everything and startx, the touchpad is not working. It turns out that the synaptics driver shipped with xf86-input-synaptics does not support my touchpad. However, if I use the "mouse" driver. It is detected as generic PS/2 mouse, which is very sensitive. At this configuration, I cannot type at all (my palm touch the touchpad all the time). Therefore I prefer the synaptics driver if possible. Ideally, I prefer to have a working touchpad with tapping disabled (too anoying when typing). Note, I don't use hald with X. If I use HAL, it will automatically assign the 'mouse' driver to my touchpad. The related configurations are listed as follows. # uname -a FreeBSD stone 10.0-CURRENT FreeBSD 10.0-CURRENT #5 r254404: Fri Aug 16 15:17:58 CEST 2013 me@stone:/usr/obj/usr/src/sys/MINE amd64 # sysctl hw.psm # tunning these parameters is not helping hw.psm.tap_enabled: 0 hw.psm.tap_threshold: 50000 hw.psm.tap_timeout: 0 # /etc/X11/xorg.conf as attached # /etc/rc.conf as attached # /var/log/Xorg.0.log as attached Any help would be appreciated. Hello! It seems this laptop has an Elantech touchpad, not a Synpatics one. On Linux, xf86-input-synaptics uses a Linux-only API to communicate with and support this touchpad, not the PS/2 common interface. So I fear that your touchpad isn't supported by xf86-inpt-synaptics on FreeBSD. > # sysctl hw.psm # tunning these parameters is not helping= > hw.psm.tap_enabled: 0 > hw.psm.tap_threshold: 50000 > hw.psm.tap_timeout: 0 Those are tunables, not sysctls, meaning they must be set in /boot/loader.conf. I tried tunning hw.psm in /boot/loader.conf by varying the values of hw.psm.synaptics_support, hw.tap_*. I always get an annoying sensitive mouse with tapping. Sometimes better, but still very annoying for typing. I would rather ignore the device if that's the only way. Also, setting these values only in /boot/loader.conf does not work. After boot it will be restored to some default values. Setting in /etc/sysctl.conf works (meaning that it really changes the parameter). Tunning by hand with sysctl also works. I need the synaptic driver in order to use the vertical/horizontal areas the pad has. I enabled the synaptic driver by putting hw.psm.synaptics_support=1 in /boot/loader.conf. No special config in xorg.conf, I tell the X server to use /dev/sysmouse. When I press the right button (which is a segregate button) the pad also scrolls down. If I disable the synaptics driver, the right button doesn't trigger any scroll at all. With a live cd of ubuntu, the scroll and the right button do work just fine.
