In many cases these ports are failing to compile on some subset of the FreeBSD build environments. The most common problem is that recent versions of -CURRENT include gcc4.2, which is much stricter than older versions. The next most common problem is that compiles succeed on the i386 architecture (e.g. the common Intel PC), but fail on one or more of the other architectures due to assumptions about things such as size of various types, byte-alignment issues, and so forth. In occasional cases we see that the same port may have different errors in different build environments. The script that runs on the build cluster uses heuristics to try to 'guess' the error type to help you isolate problems, but it is only a rough guide. One more note: on occasion, there are transient build errors seen on the build farm. Unfortunately, there is not yet any way for this algorithm to tell the difference (humans are much, much better at this kind of thing.) The errors are listed below. In the case where the same problem exists on more than one build environment, the URL points to the latest errorlog for that type. (By 'build environment' here we mean 'combination of 7.x/8.x/9.x/-current with target architecture'.) (Note: the dates are included to help you to gauge whether or not the error still applies to the latest version. The program that generates this report is not yet able to determine this automatically.) portname: devel/linux_kdump broken because: Fails to build with new linux_base-gentoo-stage3 build errors: none. overview: http://portsmon.FreeBSD.org/portoverview.py?category=devel&portname=linux_kdump portname: sysutils/linux-nero broken because: Unfetchable build errors: http://beefy2.isc.freebsd.org/bulk/93amd64-RELENG_9_3/latest/logs/errors/linux-nero-4.0.0.0_2.log overview: http://portsmon.FreeBSD.org/portoverview.py?category=sysutils&portname=linux-nero If these errors are ones that you are already aware of, please accept our apologies and ignore this message. On the other hand, if you no longer wish to maintain this port (or ports), please reply with a message stating that, and accept our thanks for your efforts in the past. Every effort has been made to make sure that these error reports really do correspond to a port that you maintain. However, due to the fact that this is an automated process, it may indeed generate false matches. If one of these errors fits that description, please forward this email to the author of this software, Mark Linimon , so that he can attempt to fix the problem in the future. The ports work necessary for that isn't complicated at all (see patch attached). The only "issue" I see is that we'd have to get all users to set compat.linux.osrelease=3D2.6.18 in /etc/sysctl.conf. As was reported during Cambridge's DevSummit, some vendors depend on having -f10 ports in the portstree, hence deprecating/removing them is not a good idea. I've recently encountered this same issue after upgrading vbox (both host app and guest tools) to 4.3.16. Guest OS is 10.0-RELEASE-p9, GENERIC kernel. It has been installed as 10.0R and kept up-to-date using freebsd-update. Host is Win7 Ent. RTTermRegisterCallback is defined in: \VirtualBox-4.3.16\src\VBox\Runtime\common\misc\term.cpp So rather than out-of-sync kernel & /usr/src, this seems more like a linker/makefile bug for this port, 'optimizing' out this function from the binaries. My make.conf is almost identical with the default options: CFLAGS=-pipe -O2 -fno-strict-aliasing -funroll-loops COPTFLAGS=-pipe -O2 -fno-strict-aliasing -funroll-loops But even with everything off I still get this error when trying to load vboxguest.ko: kernel: link_elf_obj: symbol RTTermRegisterCallback undefined kernel: linker_load_file: Unsupported file type Searching the list a bit I came upon a similar error reported in the past, recommending a `make clean` and recompiling the port (can't find it again now to link), but that didn't help. And then I came upon this, considering this sort of issue as a bug: http://lists.freebsd.org/pipermail/freebsd-emulation/2013-December/011159.html Any help on this is greatly appreciated. > On Thu, Sep 18, 2014 at 7:10 AM, Mike Harding gmail.com> wrote: > > > I tried this on a 9.3 and 10.0 client, with all options unchecked > > (no X on these virt. servers). > > > > kmod doesn't load - it spits out > > link_elf_obj: symbol RTTermRegisterCallback undefined > > linker_load_file: Unsupported file type > > > > Attempting to start the service: > > VBoxService: error: VbgIR3Init failed with rc=VER_FILE_NOT_FOUND > > > > Let me know if I can provide details, but I got this to happen on a > > generic 9.3 and 10.0 client, with only the -additions package > > installed from source. > > > > Mike H. I've changed from linux-f10\* to the linux-c6-package. LibGL.so.1 from the package try to install in the same place as the libGL.so.1 from the nvidia-port. (In my case nvidia-drivers-304). I think it's only need to copy the Nvidia_GL option from x11-toolkits/linux-c6-qt47-x11 to the emulator/linux-c6-Makefile to prevent this. (I try this for myself, and it seems to work). IIRC there should be linux-c6-alsa-lib as dependency? No, libflashsupport is supposed to provide OSS backend for flashplugin. It should have been in a separate port like with PkgSrc so people are more aware of the trust, license and maintenance involved. Would you consider creating a "virtualbox-ose-nox11" or "virtualbox-ose-lite" port in the spirit of other non-gui applications? My main motivation would be so that I can use pkg for all packages I need. Right now virtualbox-ose is the only port that I have to customize for our environment. We run virtualbox-ose headless on our servers. If so, having a port > for Additins does not make sense IMHO? I'm not sure what you are trying to say but the vbox additions port is for FreeBSD guests only. That is required because the ISO is a big blob which does not support FreeBSD and probably never will. For Windows guests the ISO is your only choice and for Linux you sometimes have both choices depending on the distro. The only "issue" I see is that we'd have to get all users > to set compat.linux.osrelease=2.6.18 > in /etc/sysctl.conf. While you tell the kernel to lie about the "features" we support, the only place this is used in FreeBSD is in the kernel (there's only a difference if you set it to 2.4.x), and the current value is strictly speaking a lie too when seen from a linux-program (not all features of the currently emulated version are really available). The only port which comes to my mind (which doesn't mean there's not another port which does something like this) which changes the running config of a system is postfix (mailer.conf). Before it does this, it asks the users if he is OK that the config is changed, it's not doing it silently (by default). Most of the ports do not automate something like this. Personally I would not automate it. If you automate it I suggest you ask the user if it is OK and don't assume it is OK by default. Info: in the past we didn't do this, first we change the value in the kernel and then we switched the default on supported FreeBSD versions. If you want to say that we could see this case differently as in the past we had to add some kernel code to run a more recent linux userland, I would not disagree (read: ivory tower perspective = I think we should change the kernel first; pragmatic point of view = I don't object changing the default)...
