I'm seeing my system (Lenovo W540) freeze during boot after updating to current. Apologies for brevity; I'm typing this on a phone and will send more details after I restore my system to a bootable state.

The last thing that shows up is launching application processors, and then the message about timestamp counters.

Disregard this report.

The root cause was unrelated to the kernel update.

Sorry for the long silence here...

Even after applying the patch sent by dmitry, the problem seems to persist. =
I've managed to track down the revision at which the problem appears, thoug=
h. It shows up in 274085, when vt became the default console, though the pr=
oblem shows up with both sc and vt.

I may try reverting to before that point and applying your and dmitry's patc=
hes and see if the problem shows up (however, for separate reasons, x11 is n=
on-functional now for me)

Hello,

I have a laptop with an Optimus setup with haswell graphics and an nvidia ca=
rd. As none of this is currently supported, I had been using the VESA drive=
rs. However, the VESA driver no longer functions after I updated ports yest=
erday (most likely connected to the removal of old x11).

I don't have the specific error message as I'm typing this on another device=
, but it seems that the driver can't access the bios (messages include "cann=
ot read V_BIOS", neither device reports a bios segment, etc).

Is there something I can do to restore the VESA drivers to a functioning sta=
te (or alternatively, any sort of development haswell driver I can use), or i=
s the only option to revert the ports directory and rebuild everything?=

Hi,

It turns out that what I thought was a C720 here is a C710. So I'm in
your boat. The default firmware doesn't include SeaBIOS, so it'd be
nice to get some actual directions on how to update things to support
that.

So if you're able to help me get directions for updating the firmware
on this thing to include SeaBIOS, I'll go through and figure out the
rest of the stuff based on what work has already been done for the
C720.

Thanks,

-adrian

This is one location I found:

https://johnlewis.ie/custom-chromebook-firmware/faq/

It's probably too late for me to get the C710 myself, now.

I think we should focus on the C720, get that stuff into -HEAD and
tested, then work on the newer Bay Trail stuff.

Unfortunately we're still lacking a graphics stack for it. :(

Hi,

So we'd have to setup a chromeos layout partition table and such.

http://www.chromium.org/chromium-os/chromiumos-design-docs/disk-format

.. but their boot environment expects an EFI32 boot loader. And we
don't have that support just yet.

(Another reason to get EFI32 done..)

My impression was that with SeaBIOS, it could boot from a normal MBR.
But I do not have a machine to test.

The C710's advantage is that RAM can be added and it takes a normal 2.5
SATA device (7mm, but still).

The C720 has a faster processor, but RAM (2G) is soldered in, there are
no sockets, and the SSD is the newer M.2 form factor. It already has
SeaBIOS, though.

While searching, I saw information that Debian could be used on these,
or at least be booted. There is also a Youtube video showing Windows 7
running on one of these machines.

Re/ C720: There are detailed information and patches how to install
HEAD on a C720;

I found a video in Youtube about updating the SSD to 128 GByte and
checked the price of such SSD (around 100 Euro). The video as well shows
the RAM soldered as 4 chips. But, I think for the purpose (netbook)
2 Gbyte is pretty much enough:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-jOHHyJMgWk

I'm still thinking about buying the C720 ... There are offers for 200 Euro.
It could really be a replacement for my nearly 8 years old EeePC 900.

cool.

well, Matthew Dillon / DragonflyBSD project just bought me a C720, so
I'll be able to shephard in the patches into -HEAD soon.

For the C710, I'd like to figure out how to build a chromeos recovery
and boot image that uses the normal way of doing it - however, and
here's the kicker - we don't have EFI32 booting support yet. So, until
we get that working, we'll be stuck. :(
