However unlike Linux where it is a system property, it looks like this option needs to be invoked inside each userland application. So without changing code for each app I care about, it looks like I'm creating lots of /32 CARP addresses. Can someone shed more light on what vhid represents? What happens when two addresses share the same vhid on the same (or different) interfaces? Why do the examples in the FreeBSD handbook always show different vhids? I've had the same question as you about VHID = best practices as the docs don't really expound on this. I'd love to = hear some perspective from the authors of CARP as well. In any case, we run a pair of FreeBSD 10/pf gateways at our colo with = binat setup between several dozen internal private networks (VLANs) and = the outside WAN (pool of ~64 public IPs). Traffic between private = networks doesn't use any form of NAT, but does get routed through the = same gateways and is subject to the same filtering policies. In this = setup, we share one VHID across all of the public IPs on the WAN = interface, and we share a second VHID across all of the private gateway = IPs on the LAN interface. Everything *appears* to work just fine, and = we've heavily tested failover, etc. Whether right or wrong, it is = working for us. But I have lost hardware acceleration inside X. My card is a Radeon 3450 which is an RV620 card. If I boot the machine and try and kiad radeomkms.ko by hand then it just locks up the machine. No useful info on the consolue. If I try loadiing radeonkms and boot time, it then displays a lot more information when it boots about loading up drm, and then afils saying is callot load the firmware for the card. Specificly it cant load radeonkmsfw_RV620_pfp At this point booting stops and the machine is unresponsive. Now I dont particularly mind the loss of hardware acceleration, as I dont use it anyway, but I thought I should report this as a bug, as this should be a supported card and configuration. KMS is kernel related to this is the correct place I hope. The kernel is r268669 from Tuesday of this week, and the packages are the binary builds from Monday, using the pkg repository for systems runnijng the new Xorg. The machine is an AMD Phenom II 965 with 4 gig of RAM, and the motherboard is MSI K9A2 Platinum (the 7376 model). Am quite happy to try out things on this too, as its my personal workstation so doesnt disruopt anyone else when it crashes. cheers, -pete. You have to load whatever firmware(s) are required by radeonkms.ko in your loader.conf. See the wiki: https://wiki.freebsd.org/Graphics#Video_driver_loaded_at_boot_time In your case, you would have to add the following lines to /boot/loader.conf: radeonkms_load=3D"YES" radeonkmsfw_RV620_pfp_load=3D"YES" radeonkmsfw_RV620_me_load=3D"YES" radeonkmsfw_R600_rlc_load=3D"YES" --=20 Jean-S=E9bastien P=E9dron --97aTl9EN6mNwtt4lMQ9aJWiiDwFRsEO4L Content-Type: application/pgp-signature; name="signature.asc" Content-Description: OpenPGP digital signature Content-Disposition: attachment; filename="signature.asc" -----BEGIN PGP SIGNATURE----- Version: GnuPG v2 Comment: Using GnuPG with Thunderbird - http://www.enigmail.net/ iQIcBAEBAgAGBQJTyRuUAAoJEDnpl2Gl/ZTMedQQAKW2MKyQG2Ucf0JKCqHFjAyW hy+GT567xu0HpX3vuvxwrEGQVxkBFCbKs/j0Bru4lUJTuoY53d26i1FrE9XrnkHC oTkHkWM4XLS3YapRUmq5jVnVvzrZoit3oL/hoPyjRUNTu9eFaIt+af62zMpxEQ1y KN69bw4YHKeim3UoM8G/s9w1Ysf9oAIi9X4Du3e+g6lNocgq8NuJWufENKFJT7HT 5aLjCKgmC5fnWgSwCUFdYmXvmQsoWa/pQY3YPcZ61XnZW2OvPDLrBigtiTbNH0mh k4zjWAh+RiKK0gsHwsbd/u8+LbrkzJzkR8tgL69oharoOR20Daik/I2cxPRVA28P FBJ0i8+kWGgf4VF4fN66JOF5DXIBv5uslkv/CNrmjwrCvRBVUAphvV6E5w7YcnIe +SGKFTm3211VR97KRtRwgOzxZwuTfXxTmPxTF17pfZytKXQCXyIPM8AramP1GeOn gkm/M6dEfu67WmPs2C5yGpNC4VGS+QZsAZdNwT2Z+FsBwTvPZl8dGhcwG1cdS4tR SVBAhi1QLFAeu7VSGfGsVXBxTqipQbpd87Ur/tcPJ86ZIyFBsbQJeqTf76efuokp 1uebN4qHomY1Awyfx9+80WugIykDx0ALW7dxYV7uJCigiZCG1anCn6fxq2lB1YT3 I3q+xcNa3QX3Ihi0UwgF =HumZ -----END PGP SIGNATURE----- --97aTl9EN6mNwtt4lMQ9aJWiiDwFRsEO4L-- From owner-freebsd-stable@FreeBSD.ORG Fri Jul 18 13:21:51 2014 Return-Path: Delivered-To: freebsd-stable@freebsd.org Received: from mx1.freebsd.org (mx1.freebsd.org [8.8.178.115]) (using TLSv1 with cipher ADH-AES256-SHA (256/256 bits)) (No client certificate requested) by hub.freebsd.org (Postfix) with ESMTPS id ACE42F06 for ; Fri, 18 Jul 2014 13:21:51 +0000 (UTC) Received: from constantine.ingresso.co.uk (constantine.ingresso.co.uk [IPv6:2a02:b90:3002:e550::3]) (using TLSv1 with cipher DHE-RSA-AES256-SHA (256/256 bits)) (Client did not present a certificate) by mx1.freebsd.org (Postfix) with ESMTPS id 76571235B for ; Fri, 18 Jul 2014 13:21:51 +0000 (UTC) Received: from dilbert.london-internal.ingresso.co.uk ([10.64.50.6] helo=dilbert.ingresso.co.uk) by constantine.ingresso.co.uk with esmtps (TLSv1:DHE-RSA-AES256-SHA:256) (Exim 4.82 (FreeBSD)) (envelope-from ) id 1X886e-0003xx-HZ; Fri, 18 Jul 2014 13:21:48 +0000 Received: from petefrench by dilbert.ingresso.co.uk with local (Exim 4.82_1-5b7a7c0-XX (FreeBSD)) (envelope-from ) id 1X886e-0002FZ-FR; Fri, 18 Jul 2014 14:21:48 +0100 To: freebsd-stable@freebsd.org, ronald-lists@klop.ws Subject: Re: Problems loading RV620 firmware In-Reply-To: Message-Id: From: Pete French Date: Fri, 18 Jul 2014 14:21:48 +0100 X-BeenThere: freebsd-stable@freebsd.org X-Mailman-Version: 2.1.18 Precedence: list List-Id: Production branch of FreeBSD source code List-Unsubscribe: , List-Archive: List-Post: List-Help: List-Subscribe: , X-List-Received-Date: Fri, 18 Jul 2014 13:21:51 -0000 > What version of FreeBSD are you running? 9.3-STABLE , SVN r268669 which was tuesday morning I belive. -pete. But it does boot fine. If I try and start X it stops saying there are no screens found. I have attached the log below, but the thing which stands out in it for me is this: [ 127.327] (EE) RADEON(0): [dri] RADEONDRIGetVersion failed because of a version mismatch. [dri] This chipset requires a kernel module version of 1.17.0, [dri] but the kernel reports a version of 2.29.0.[dri] Make sure your module is loaded prior to starting X, and [dri] that this driver was built with support for KMS. [dri] Aborting. Which makes me wonder if the installed drivers have actually been compiled using WITH_NEW_XORG. As I said, I am using the repository pkg+http://pkg.FreeBSD.org/freebsd:9:x86:64/new_xorg to get my packages, or at least I have that configured. Having followed the instructions for configuring that repository I couldnt find any options to tell 'pkg' to use it though. My assumption was that the packages in it would over-ride those in the rnomal one, but maybe this is not true and I still have the old packages in use ? -pete. Right, that makese sense. > Can you reinstall that driver and make sure the correct version is picked ? This is what pkg -vvv gives me as its list of repositories: Repositories: FreeBSD: { url : "pkg+http://pkg.FreeBSD.org/freebsd:9:x86:64/latest", enabled : yes, mirror_type : "SRV", signature_type : "FINGERPRINTS", fingerprints : "/usr/share/keys/pkg" } FreeBSD_new_xorg: { url : "pkg+http://pkg.FreeBSD.org/freebsd:9:x86:64/new_xorg", enabled : yes, mirror_type : "SRV", signature_type : "FINGERPRINTS", fingerprints : "/usr/share/keys/pkg" } So it looks like I am using the right repository. One minor clarification on this point - in HEAD and stable/10 both syscons and vt are enabled in GENERIC, and one can be selected at boot time via the kern.vty tunable. Syscons is indeed the default in both branches for now. The changes to allow them to coexist were not merged to stable/9, so there vt(4) is available only as a build-time option. In the Makefile of the xf86-video-ati port is a line with something like: if $OSVERSION < 100000 | !WITH_NEW_XORG | !i386 | !amd64 then WITH_NEW_XORG=off endif So this port will never compile the new version of the driver on 9-STABLE. If you remove the $OSVERSION < 100000 part it will compile and work correctly. I think we forgot to update the xf86-video-ati port after the Radeon driver was merged to stable/9. Can you try the following commands? cd /usr/ports/x11-drivers/xf86-video-ati make -V PORTVERSION What is the output here? I expect 6.14.6. Then, apply the attached patch, which will modify the Makefile, and rerun the make(1) command above and note the output. If it says 7.2.0, you can build and install the port. --=20 Jean-S=E9bastien P=E9dron --------------000909090701040003020005 Content-Type: text/x-patch; name="xf86-video-ati-on-stable9.patch" Content-Transfer-Encoding: quoted-printable Content-Disposition: attachment; filename="xf86-video-ati-on-stable9.patch" --- Makefile.orig 2014-07-18 16:21:14.000000000 +0200 +++ Makefile 2014-07-18 16:21:25.000000000 +0200 @@ -14,7 +14,7 @@ =20 .include =20 -.if ${OSVERSION} < 1000051 || !defined(WITH_NEW_XORG) || \ +.if ${OSVERSION} < 902508 || !defined(WITH_NEW_XORG) || \ (${ARCH} !=3D i386 && ${ARCH} !=3D amd64) ATI_VERSION=3D 6.14.6 ATI_REVISION=3D 3 --------------000909090701040003020005-- --W0N35SqoUQFxm16BDvJ2bMxIF9jWsqmd9 Content-Type: application/pgp-signature; name="signature.asc" Content-Description: OpenPGP digital signature Content-Disposition: attachment; filename="signature.asc" -----BEGIN PGP SIGNATURE----- Version: GnuPG v2 Comment: Using GnuPG with Thunderbird - http://www.enigmail.net/ iQIcBAEBAgAGBQJTyS4sAAoJEDnpl2Gl/ZTMw2QP/09akFiWP7bHqPxvZOsTicVV LWZenOoT0mCc/KB2VTEQPHU7Zl0oWr2powHO7PmxkF0ZJJHrC2iPM/nVdQdcYx6R g5oSxCCc+o24nevMzJnkWoWYQ5MvLOPamNjHpVuhserRlG+xPVjmU1FTG90Gqev8 60dDqNhE1mTkeZ0sIbirqQDestCr4JcDpZ51olUj7qpDFjHO7mqFdscP9zNHb6IF j4o8I1vOtH6cY9Q4aWpQtYgV0+vD/L6KjIgkl4epGrE7OlZGua1as/eIfsaH3QFD C1VGOpPqjRoCQaFLEawcsXq6s/iTbLYLV0Pxep24frjfJvrJgWKSrZUmzz7DifnX H5XLNbG3WM4lhFeN0xhUa/WAsxcNk+uApWu2DBJSWVL52jUWJdrGz5q4Rldu0Jh0 9fsaZHmJ7nSNsVNeE/l0ygnS6y8msk3CzkbfPth2aLxci2YDPyUW+4s7shlOwWqD IzIUXdYWa15+N7O22F9e6yFVH89TByy6pn2pfcQCql08jnTJgf9h4cdecceRoGwX 19Y8VL7ztK8xd+6bEiJgauuonC6SFUEUg2x22tK/zMskWi3ZTJTMwcr5Hl/GwzhX uuTcve3waBMDGvP3ZFPLnq9dHTPJWNdgh0WxQCUOSDcMHuguJeUFHnG9m2Cqq/k+ vhZ4torjVfJT2kJ4jump =E5Ss -----END PGP SIGNATURE----- --W0N35SqoUQFxm16BDvJ2bMxIF9jWsqmd9-- From owner-freebsd-stable@FreeBSD.ORG Fri Jul 18 14:48:05 2014 Return-Path: Delivered-To: freebsd-stable@freebsd.org Received: from mx1.freebsd.org (mx1.freebsd.org [8.8.178.115]) (using TLSv1 with cipher ADH-AES256-SHA (256/256 bits)) (No client certificate requested) by hub.freebsd.org (Postfix) with ESMTPS id 07B67111 for ; Fri, 18 Jul 2014 14:48:05 +0000 (UTC) Received: from constantine.ingresso.co.uk (constantine.ingresso.co.uk [IPv6:2a02:b90:3002:e550::3]) (using TLSv1 with cipher DHE-RSA-AES256-SHA (256/256 bits)) (Client did not present a certificate) by mx1.freebsd.org (Postfix) with ESMTPS id C50E92C03 for ; Fri, 18 Jul 2014 14:48:04 +0000 (UTC) Received: from dilbert.london-internal.ingresso.co.uk ([10.64.50.6] helo=dilbert.ingresso.co.uk) by constantine.ingresso.co.uk with esmtps (TLSv1:DHE-RSA-AES256-SHA:256) (Exim 4.82 (FreeBSD)) (envelope-from ) id 1X89S6-0008FS-G5; Fri, 18 Jul 2014 14:48:02 +0000 Received: from petefrench by dilbert.ingresso.co.uk with local (Exim 4.82_1-5b7a7c0-XX (FreeBSD)) (envelope-from ) id 1X89S6-0004D4-Do; Fri, 18 Jul 2014 15:48:02 +0100 To: freebsd-stable@freebsd.org, jean-sebastien.pedron@dumbbell.fr Subject: Re: Problems loading RV620 firmware In-Reply-To: <53C92E27.1040300@dumbbell.fr> Message-Id: From: Pete French Date: Fri, 18 Jul 2014 15:48:02 +0100 X-BeenThere: freebsd-stable@freebsd.org X-Mailman-Version: 2.1.18 Precedence: list List-Id: Production branch of FreeBSD source code List-Unsubscribe: , List-Archive: List-Post: List-Help: List-Subscribe: , X-List-Received-Date: Fri, 18 Jul 2014 14:48:05 -0000 > I think we forgot to update the xf86-video-ati port after the Radeon > driver was merged to stable/9. > > Can you try the following commands? > cd /usr/ports/x11-drivers/xf86-video-ati > make -V PORTVERSION > > What is the output here?
