Arch Linux, Ubuntu, and OpenBSD all install their Xorg configs automatically on this laptop, working great. But no such luck with FreeBSD. Doing these steps exactly: http://www.freebsd.org/doc/en_US.ISO8859-1/books/handbook/x-install.html http://www.freebsd.org/doc/en_US.ISO8859-1/books/handbook/x-config.html But when I do the `Xorg -config xorg.conf.new -retro` step, neither keyboard nor mouse/touchpad are recognized, and the resolutions settings look way off. MY QUESTION: How can I copy the Xorg settings from my OpenBSD or Linux installation into my FreeBSD 10 installation? The others don't seem to have an obvious xorg.conf file anywhere, so I'm stumped for where else to look. Thank you and sorry for the dumb question. - M. That's probably a bug in bsd.cpu.mk. In this case I think it's best to remove the SIMD option. The configure script detects if the compiler supports it and at runtime pixman detects if the cpu supports it. There's no need to disable this. There's also SSSE3 and several mips and arm options that are missing, so the pixman package already has support for those: checking whether to use MMX intrinsics... disabled checking whether to use SSE2 intrinsics... disabled checking whether to use SSSE3 intrinsics... yes Index: Makefile =================================================================== --- Makefile (revision 342362) +++ Makefile (working copy) @@ -14,18 +14,4 @@ USE_AUTOTOOLS= libtool CONFIGURE_ARGS= --disable-gtk USE_GNOME= ltverhack:30 -OPTIONS_DEFINE= SIMD - -.include - -.if ! {PORT_OPTIONS:MSIMD} -CONFIGURE_ARGS= --disable-vmx --disable-arm-simd -. if ! ${MACHINE_CPU:Mmmx} -CONFIGURE_ARGS+= --disable-mmx -. endif -. if ! ${MACHINE_CPU:Msse2} -CONFIGURE_ARGS+= --disable-sse2 -. endif -.endif - .include From owner-freebsd-x11@FreeBSD.ORG Mon Feb 3 09:30:46 2014 Return-Path: Delivered-To: freebsd-x11@freebsd.org Received: from mx1.freebsd.org (mx1.freebsd.org [IPv6:2001:1900:2254:206a::19:1]) (using TLSv1 with cipher ADH-AES256-SHA (256/256 bits)) (No client certificate requested) by hub.freebsd.org (Postfix) with ESMTPS id D888A2B4 for ; Mon, 3 Feb 2014 09:30:46 +0000 (UTC) Received: from mail-lb0-f169.google.com (mail-lb0-f169.google.com [209.85.217.169]) (using TLSv1 with cipher ECDHE-RSA-RC4-SHA (128/128 bits)) (No client certificate requested) by mx1.freebsd.org (Postfix) with ESMTPS id 4D0C41186 for ; Mon, 3 Feb 2014 09:30:45 +0000 (UTC) Received: by mail-lb0-f169.google.com with SMTP id q8so5242195lbi.0 for ; Mon, 03 Feb 2014 01:30:43 -0800 (PST) X-Google-DKIM-Signature: v=1; a=rsa-sha256; c=relaxed/relaxed; d=1e100.net; s=20130820; h=x-gm-message-state:message-id:date:from:user-agent:mime-version:to :subject:references:in-reply-to:content-type; bh=eyW9Mvdwt6wbiHlevmyW6XPWomMe5H3djsqxcxfKUVg=; b=YS6mnAAy/8e3MnILKGNMuti+tlyBfo5rHaVXd1KZRTAFlbWfZcngbFKt8V3VVqG6iU Ucax0h21wpG/Y256Vky/Uq4DB12tp89UObIfx2KHw7r1+DisEWoGQ5UJ0c2CWolHkCNH WQhNy2sLLfo1F2ckOvBxcKHZulX5SC9HqGVxJxWc2AOsxQ28EsxiiF45ipxRtFzvqCeX Dcj0QxfSZgaMGTpe6WVbV6QzlrOIvCtxh0fVry2cEL9omMnexiJkPryW95kiMmQLu7BE gHtVmIQ5FqGmhAkAbbW5ylQX8Nawf/Ow2QTpcTmJvJT1u+CPM5wGz7sP2+srPcO8RUvL ddMg== X-Gm-Message-State: ALoCoQk5XUPqM0PN+N2lQs9bemHhjd9ZmVaWadPQyXhaXX29WAoqfKQNvg3MVp+kXp35zECBhy8y X-Received: by 10.112.242.134 with SMTP id wq6mr12152993lbc.24.1391419843345; Mon, 03 Feb 2014 01:30:43 -0800 (PST) Received: from zealot.ksu.ru (128-74-226-136.broadband.corbina.ru. was for. My understanding is that it's for AMD Radeon and not for Intel. Is there any harm in putting WITH_GALLIUM= in /etc/make.conf with an Intel chip? One might be preparing an installation for a removable medium such as USB drive, SD card or live CD, or for general-purpose installation, just as a Linux distro will have drivers for many more hardware items than any one computer will be able to use. That machine has options for video, either the integrated Intel graphics in the processor, or extra Nvidia graphics with the "Optimus" setup. Intel video up to Ivy Bridge is supported by KMS drivers, reference here: https://wiki.freebsd.org/Graphics At present, there is no Optimus support for FreeBSD. It may be possible to disable the Nvidia graphics in the BIOS and use just the Intel graphics. Sorry, no idea what is needed to enable Optimus. > But when I do the `Xorg -config xorg.conf.new -retro` step, neither keyboard nor mouse/touchpad are recognized, and the resolutions settings look way off. That is likely due to the vesa driver being used because KMS drivers have not been installed, see above. By default, the keyboard and mouse depend on hal and dbus being enabled and running. That is best disabled by adding Option "AutoAddDevices" "Off" to the ServerLayout section of xorg.conf. > MY QUESTION: > > How can I copy the Xorg settings from my OpenBSD or Linux installation into my FreeBSD 10 installation? It probably is not an xorg.conf problem, more likely a combination of needing KMS drivers and Optimus disabled, and so a copied xorg.conf may not work anyway. > The others don't seem to have an obvious xorg.conf file anywhere, so I'm stumped for where else to look. xorg.conf is not required, X can auto-configure most devices and it is often better to run that way. Or they may not put xorg.conf in /etc. There are several other locations that work. On FreeBSD, the right place is /usr/local/etc/X11/xorg.conf. > Thank you and sorry for the dumb question. It's not a dumb question. Right now, X on FreeBSD is a bit complicated. Okay, here's the first one which fixes three conditions that could lead t= o double-free: - xstrdup(path) before passing it to input_option_new() a second time. Th= is avoids the potential for double-free when the callee deallocates them. - Fix another double-free condition: socket_getline() is expected by its = caller to set **out as a pointer to an allocated block whenever it returns a non-negative value. This is incorrect because X doesn't want _all_ the input from keyboard but rather just the one typed in its VT (usually /dev/ttyv7). Plus, attempting to open /dev/ukbd0 usually fails with EBUSY as the keyboard is already being used by syscons. This patch adjusts devd.c to follow the same approach as HAL: detect the keyboard but feed it a zero-length device path. The result is that X detects the presence of a keyboard, and therefore loads the kbd_drv module, but doesn't attempt to open it directly (which is unnecessary since /dev/ttyv7 is already open). -- Robert Millan --------------070008010608080109000107 Content-Type: text/x-patch; name="devd_no_kbd.diff" Content-Transfer-Encoding: 7bit Content-Disposition: attachment; filename="devd_no_kbd.diff" === modified file 'devd.c' --- devd.c 2014-02-03 14:28:22 +0000 +++ devd.c 2014-02-03 14:28:02 +0000 @@ -224,7 +224,15 @@ device_added(char *line) return; } #endif - if (asprintf(&path, "/dev/%s", line) == -1) + + if (attrs.flags & ATTR_KEYBOARD) + /* For keyboards, we don't want to open the actual device, because + we only need input from the VT that X is running on (see + xf86OpenConsole() in bsd_init.c). Unfortunately this didn't completely fix the problem. Testing by Debian developers revealed that attaching a second keyboard and then detaching it disabled keyboard handling in X somehow: https://lists.debian.org/debian-bsd/2014/02/msg00074.html I investigated and found that HAL avoids this by ignoring keyboard events completely. Instead, it generates a fake "AT Keyboard" event during initialization (with empty device path too), which makes X load the kbd driver just once. Here's a patch that implements the same behaviour with devd. I've verified that attaching/detaching a second keyboard no longer causes this ill effect. -- Robert Millan --------------060403050100050700040708 Content-Type: text/x-patch; name="devd_fake_kbd.diff" Content-Transfer-Encoding: 7bit Content-Disposition: attachment; filename="devd_fake_kbd.diff" === modified file 'devd.c' --- devd.c 2014-02-08 11:38:01 +0000 +++ devd.c 2014-02-08 11:39:02 +0000 @@ -69,8 +69,6 @@ struct hw_type { }; static struct hw_type hw_types[] = { - { "ukbd", ATTR_KEYBOARD, "kdb" }, - { "atkbd", ATTR_KEYBOARD, "kdb" }, { "ums", ATTR_POINTER, "mouse" }, { "psm", ATTR_POINTER, "mouse" }, { "joy", ATTR_JOYSTICK, NULL }, @@ -182,6 +180,44 @@ sysctl_get_str(const char *format, ...) } static void +keyboard_added() +{ + InputOption *options = NULL; + InputAttributes attrs = {}; + DeviceIntPtr dev = NULL; + int rc; + + options = input_option_new(NULL, "_source", "server/devd"); + if (!options) + return; + + options = input_option_new(options, "name", xstrdup("AT Keyboard")); + options = input_option_new(options, "path", xstrdup("")); + options = input_option_new(options, "device", xstrdup("")); + options = input_option_new(options, "config_info", xstrdup("devd:AT Keyboard")); + + LogMessage(X_INFO, "config/devd: Adding AT Keyboard\n"); + + memset(&attrs, 0, sizeof(attrs)); + attrs.flags = ATTR_KEYBOARD; + attrs.vendor = xstrdup("(unnamed)"); + attrs.product = xstrdup("(unnamed)"); + + rc = NewInputDeviceRequest(options, &attrs, &dev); + + if (rc != Success) + goto unwind; + + return; + + unwind: + input_option_free_list(&options); + free(attrs.vendor); + free(attrs.product); + return; +} + +static void device_added(char *line) { char *walk; @@ -435,6 +471,13 @@ config_devd_init(void) char devicename[1024]; int i, j; + /* For keyboards, we don't want to open the actual device, because + we only need input from the VT that X is running on (see + xf86OpenConsole() in bsd_init.c). The pristine code doesn't work, but with the collection of fixes I just sent everything is working fine here (been using that for one week or so).
