To be honest I can not even recall why. But this worked fine with syscons without any glitches. With vt I get the following during boot up: vidcontrol: setting mouse character: Inappropriate ioctl for device And mouse cursor is never drawn, apparently vidcontrol -m on -M just fails. Looks like with syscons MOUSE_MOUSECHAR ioctl is handled by a terminal device and consolectl device while with vt it is handled only by sysmouse device. Another issue is that I see the following messages appearing during boot and from time to time afterwards in the system log: kernel: sysmouse: unknown ioctl: t:40007413 kernel: sysmouse: unknown ioctl: t:80007410 The ioctls seem to be TIOCFLUSH and TIOCGETA, so I am not sure why sysmouse gets involved. Maybe the same issue exists with syscons's sysmouse as well, but it is just silent about it. Seems like ioctls are called by X server. I remember we were discussed that problem before, can you please check if moused enabled (in rc.conf or by devd for USB mouse) and do you use Kern.vt.textmode (IIRC its name)? Mousecharstart is a first char of 4 to replace its bitmap with parts of mouse pointer. You can see its job by defining it to some of frequently used chars, then mouse pointer will be moved over many chars on the screen :-) About second question - there is no problem to just remove that warning, but think better to left it to make an idea for developers about what term ioctls doing with sysmuse devfs node. Yes, this is expected; that's what I explained earlier. A new console driver supporting KMS is available in FreeBSD 11-CURRENT. I agree that xterm gives the impression that it redraws the window slowly compared to the UMS driver. For instance, when the program inside xterm outputs a lot of data, xterm often slowly clears the whole window (I can see the text dispappearing, starting from the bottom going to the top), then it displays the content again (this is fast). The same behavior occurs on Linux. I have not verified if it's effectively slower with KMS or just an impression. > [ 1099.374] drmOpenDevice: node name is /dev/dri/card0 > [ 1099.375] Failed to change owner or group for file /dev/dri! 2: No s= uch file=20 > or directory > [ 1099.375] Failed to change owner or group for file /dev/dri/card0! 2= : No such > file or directory > [ 1099.376] drmOpenDevice: open result is -1, (No such file or directo= ry) > [ 1099.377] Failed to change owner or group for file /dev/dri/card0! 2= : No such > file or directory > [ 1099.377] drmOpenDevice: open result is -1, (No such file or directo= ry) > [ 1099.379] drmOpenDevice: Open failed > [ 1101.130] drmOpenByBusid: Searching for BusID pci:0000:00:01.0 > [ 1101.130] drmOpenDevice: node name is /dev/dri/card0 > [ 1101.131] drmOpenDevice: open result is 9, (OK) This is ok: the first time it tries, /dev/dri/card0 doesn't exist. Therefore, it calls kldload to load radeonkms.ko (which creates /dev/dri/card0) and then retries to open it. --=20 Jean-S=E9bastien P=E9dron --VKFFsXvjnVao24ajq4erRb2HdDv43WaK5 Content-Type: application/pgp-signature; name="signature.asc" Content-Description: OpenPGP digital signature Content-Disposition: attachment; filename="signature.asc" -----BEGIN PGP SIGNATURE----- Version: GnuPG v2.0.22 (FreeBSD) Comment: Using GnuPG with Thunderbird - http://www.enigmail.net/ iQJ8BAEBCgBmBQJTAl6wXxSAAAAAAC4AKGlzc3Vlci1mcHJAbm90YXRpb25zLm9w ZW5wZ3AuZmlmdGhob3JzZW1hbi5uZXQ2NzA4N0ZEMUFFQUUwRTEyREJDNkE2RjAz OUU5OTc2MUE1RkQ5NENDAAoJEDnpl2Gl/ZTMlmQQAJVqnUJ/IaABQ4WPlZkrCoMC At8dEbfi/ekHxWUISLGZKqQZe3uS4KxM7s+bHigwgLmCotryY6Aj6fw/FM61Ka0h mPnZBDocBkn9ulXDXxg1YSBciToXdeNAYSQDtksS1ZoQPtaXWkns6baQzt5eWkPz 4TpKlaDi0aOBbokxHnM2CugLzb8wdZv+YPgwK1sTYg6+AfuenopOM5fYpLauDQuG oz4KU2yfcrHmMePBiP3/4s9U9+GQpLyORJ1omnmHPufaTmcesCzH+vfCyIJY+V3i aiuiRUEc7hXq5/nkhxc+NRpz9mnYORxcMBMrF5ZXpX/YpZD9TjahQqf+SJwHf8id pPZZUCsTYJalhcZLrd1DJX6bNLWjE59DKHnGoAvQLUOcRSQBggAvxIucf3J9s87P LUGJmScpO5DfxW6kMe1oFFxLapuKBYWGsvi7nkXuQ9RMr707Ewtd7JcTqWzpa0/A FXxlFedWiRfvt5AhbkUBzUIyWFslKolhh3xTDBvpheNV19grzP9hug5BPx6BdTVI pPnjjqad/CSkOyxiYoPZ8f7ZJysUFUoxQFvyLYEJ/FloZUZBs0g2aRPkgrd4VHfc DiOPk2ttkcAMZhX26jvp2xOKE+zPM4mYbghOyWKIR9z3NfEO3zJBB0JZjgrQOz5N Ib/92yrv5FU9FKjnDbix =qDby -----END PGP SIGNATURE----- --VKFFsXvjnVao24ajq4erRb2HdDv43WaK5-- From owner-freebsd-x11@FreeBSD.ORG Mon Feb 17 19:24:32 2014 Return-Path: Delivered-To: freebsd-x11@freebsd.org Received: from mx1.freebsd.org (mx1.freebsd.org [IPv6:2001:1900:2254:206a::19:1]) (using TLSv1 with cipher ADH-AES256-SHA (256/256 bits)) (No client certificate requested) by hub.freebsd.org (Postfix) with ESMTPS id 9BC80408 for ; Mon, 17 Feb 2014 19:24:32 +0000 (UTC) Received: from mail.made4.biz (mail.made4.biz [IPv6:2001:41d0:2:c018::1:3]) (using TLSv1.2 with cipher ECDHE-RSA-AES256-GCM-SHA384 (256/256 bits)) (No client certificate requested) by mx1.freebsd.org (Postfix) with ESMTPS id 5ADDE1798 for ; Mon, 17 Feb 2014 19:24:32 +0000 (UTC) Received: from 2a02-8428-011b-e000-0290-f5ff-fe9d-b78c.rev.sfr.net ([2a02:8428:11b:e000:290:f5ff:fe9d:b78c] helo=magellan.dumbbell.fr) by mail.made4.biz with esmtpsa (TLSv1:DHE-RSA-CAMELLIA256-SHA:256) (Exim 4.82 (FreeBSD)) (envelope-from ) id 1WFTnp-0008Wp-6b for freebsd-x11@freebsd.org; Mon, 17 Feb 2014 20:24:31 +0100 Message-ID: <530261E6.6000008@FreeBSD.org> Date: Mon, 17 Feb 2014 20:24:22 +0100 From: =?ISO-8859-1?Q?Jean-S=E9bastien_P=E9dron?= User-Agent: Mozilla/5.0 (X11; FreeBSD amd64; rv:24.0) Gecko/20100101 Thunderbird/24.2.0 MIME-Version: 1.0 To: freebsd-x11@freebsd.org Subject: Re: X stopped after clicking a menu item in blackbox to start xterm References: <20140217151829.7ae248db@X220.alogt.com> In-Reply-To: <20140217151829.7ae248db@X220.alogt.com> X-Enigmail-Version: 1.6 Content-Type: multipart/signed; micalg=pgp-sha512; protocol="application/pgp-signature"; boundary="UEqxI7vDkQaWxiN1LiUoDe7ABMh9uFTvV" X-BeenThere: freebsd-x11@freebsd.org X-Mailman-Version: 2.1.17 Precedence: list List-Id: X11 on FreeBSD -- maintaining and support List-Unsubscribe: , List-Archive: List-Post: List-Help: List-Subscribe: , X-List-Received-Date: Mon, 17 Feb 2014 19:24:32 -0000 This is an OpenPGP/MIME signed message (RFC 4880 and 3156) --UEqxI7vDkQaWxiN1LiUoDe7ABMh9uFTvV Content-Type: text/plain; charset=ISO-8859-1 Content-Transfer-Encoding: quoted-printable On 17.02.2014 08:18, Erich Dollansky wrote: > [ 19391.368] (WW) intel(0): drmDropMaster failed: Unknown error: -22 > [ 19391.374] Server terminated successfully (0). The 5000 didn't work when I tried it last (around RC1), if I remember correctly it couldn't get at the monitor. It would be way too hot anyway... The HD4200M works fine. Still, the laptop runs about 5=C2=B0 hotter then with 9.2. Oh, two small problems: - I cannot use a screensaver with power save, it will not come alive again... - I can only switch off the HD5000 after X started. If I do it before, X just does not start :( One question: is there a way to stop the HD5000 drm code to load? I believe there are older Intel GPUs that work without VESA with the old Xorg server (and can still switch vtys, etc.) that NEW_XORG would be a regression for. OTOH, I also want to push vt(4) to the stable branches in general as an option. I used NEW_XORG with KMS for a while without vt(4) and compared to all my previous experiences with X and laptops on FreeBSD, the lack of being able to exit X (or restart X to try to change settings, etc.) was quite a PITA. -- John Baldwin From owner-freebsd-x11@FreeBSD.ORG Tue Feb 18 21:17:12 2014 Return-Path: Delivered-To: freebsd-x11@FreeBSD.org Received: from mx1.freebsd.org (mx1.freebsd.org [8.8.178.115]) (using TLSv1 with cipher ADH-AES256-SHA (256/256 bits)) (No client certificate requested) by hub.freebsd.org (Postfix) with ESMTPS id 6AFF4AE6; Tue, 18 Feb 2014 21:17:12 +0000 (UTC) Received: from onlyone.friendlyhosting.spb.ru (onlyone.friendlyhosting.spb.ru [IPv6:2a01:4f8:131:60a2::2]) by mx1.freebsd.org (Postfix) with ESMTP id 2C47A15F9; Tue, 18 Feb 2014 21:17:12 +0000 (UTC) Received: from lion.home.serebryakov.spb.ru (unknown [IPv6:2001:470:923f:1:c896:bb5c:9b2b:52b0]) (Authenticated sender: lev@serebryakov.spb.ru) by onlyone.friendlyhosting.spb.ru (Postfix) with ESMTPSA id 2959E4AC2D; Wed, 19 Feb 2014 01:17:10 +0400 (MSK) Date: Wed, 19 Feb 2014 01:17:06 +0400 From: Lev Serebryakov Organization: FreeBSD Project X-Priority: 3 (Normal) Message-ID: <1318211869.20140219011706@serebryakov.spb.ru> To: Aleksandr Rybalko Subject: Re: vt(9) r261654 with preloaded i915kms -- hangs 9 times out of 10 on boot In-Reply-To: <20140218002326.39045f60.ray@freebsd.org> References: <1994922749.20140215195633@serebryakov.spb.ru> <20140218002326.39045f60.ray@freebsd.org> MIME-Version: 1.0 Content-Type: text/plain; charset=utf-8 Content-Transfer-Encoding: quoted-printable Cc: freebsd-x11@FreeBSD.org, current@freebsd.org X-BeenThere: freebsd-x11@freebsd.org X-Mailman-Version: 2.1.17 Precedence: list Reply-To: lev@FreeBSD.org List-Id: X11 on FreeBSD -- maintaining and support List-Unsubscribe: , List-Archive: List-Post: List-Help: List-Subscribe: , X-List-Received-Date: Tue, 18 Feb 2014 21:17:12 -0000 Hello, Aleksandr. KMS, VT, xrandr, everything seems to work out of the box. I've also tested on a KVM/Libvirt system on Linux with a QXL display card, no modesetting here, but X.org and the shell work fine, also with VT enabled. The only strange thing I have is that X never starts in the VT resolution. - The monitors on the Intel systems are 1600x900 (correct resolution in VT), but X starts at 1024x768. - The KVM VM does not have KMS but X starts at 1280x768 (!). Apart from this glitch, everything else is fine. As a side note, I was looking at a way to set my keymap and leave hotplugging enabled without disabling Hald and fiddling too much with X configuration. Web searches return a lot old and confusing answers; but by looking at a Fedora system I discovered that is actually very easy. Just create the /etc/X11/xorg.conf file with only this content: Section "InputClass" Identifier "system-keyboard" MatchIsKeyboard "on" Option "XkbLayout" "it" EndSection This way, any keyboard attached to the system gets the correct layout. Probably it's all obvious, but since I could not find this information anywhere, maybe it should be added to the wiki. Not knowing much about hardware and 3D acceleration and stuff, I searched the internet for a bit and found out that the ATI Radeon KMS drivers are supposed to be in FreeBSD 10, and took that as good news to indeed try it out. Unfortunately, that was not very successful. While it did not break everything (The system does still boot) I don't get X configured with this new configuration, because `X -configure` fails with a segfault (see below). This is still the case also after rebuilding the base system and all my packages from source while having WITH_NEW_XORG=yes WITH_KMS=yes in my /etc/make.conf. Is there a likely way to debug this problem (Changing some other options and rebuilding some software? configuring X by hand/xorgcfg/xorgconfig/stuff like that?) and get this to work, or am I better off putting my nvidia card back in and foregoing hardware 3d acceleration? -- Gereon Kaiping ==X -configure output== X.Org X Server 1.12.4 Release Date: 2012-08-27 X Protocol Version 11, Revision 0 Build Operating System: FreeBSD 11.0-CURRENT amd64 Current Operating System: FreeBSD parhippus 11.0-CURRENT FreeBSD 11.0-CURRENT #0 r261797: Wed Feb 19 01:41:55 GMT 2014 gereon@parhippus:/usr/obj/usr/src/sys/PARHIPPUS amd64 Build Date: 20 February 2014 01:20:20PM Current version of pixman: 0.32.4 Before reporting problems, check http://wiki.x.org to make sure that you have the latest version. WITH_NEW_XORG gets the later version of xorg with KMS drivers, and the ATI driver also needs WITH_GALLIUM. Kevin Oberman, Network Engineer, Retired Regarding WITH_GALLIUM, how would you design such parameters for an installation that could run on a wide variety of computers? This could be for USB drive or live CD, or even eSATA or SATA drive that could run from a hard-drive dock. That being said, there might be difficulty in designing a one-size-fits-all installation. For instance, on OpenBSD Live USB, from liveusb-openbsd.sourceforge.net, X doesn't start at all. I could try tweaking xorg.conf as I did successfully with NetBSD-current amd64. But PC-BSD somehow does it? I haven't tried PC-BSD. It is pretty crusty as it is not often used any more. I recommend removing (or moving aside) xorg.conf and just starting X. These days X is VERY good at auto-configuring. It usually "just works". Assuming that X starts (and remember that by default these days that X starts with a black screen), you can add customizations needed. My xorg.conf is very short with "files" and "modules" sections to allow me to add font directories and modules like "freetype". That's it.
