A few months ago I sent an e-mail to a mailing list and reported about problems related to starting X on FreeBSD when using EFI mode. I "fixed" that problem by using the "scfb" driver from ports. Yesterday I tried to send this message to current@freebsd.org, but was then recommended to try this mailing list (freebsd-x11@freebsd.org) instead: Today I, using "Xorg -configure", was playing around with the intel driver, since my Mac has a built-in Intel HD 3000 graphics card as well as a Radeon HD 6770M. For some reason, when I attempt to start X with the intel driver, the screen freezes. However, if I start X using scfb and then manually load the i915kms kernel module using the command "kldload i915kms", the system works perfectly fine until I leave X (at that time the screen freezes again). When using the xorg.conf.new file generated by Xorg -configure, the system prefers to use the intel driver rather than the radeon driver (neither of which seem to work). Taking a look at the output of dmesg -a from a verbose boot, I noted the following messages: info: [drm] Initialized drm 1.1.0 20060810 drmn1: on vgapci1 vgapci1: attempting to allocate 1 MSI vectors (1 supported) msi: routing MSI IRQ 268 to local APIC 2 vector 50 vgapci1: using IRQ 268 for MSI info: [drm] MSI enabled 1 message(s) info: [drm] AGP at 0xa0000000 256MB iicbus0: on iicbb0 addr 0xff iic0: on iicbus0 iic1: on iicbus1 iicbus2: on iicbb1 addr 0x0 iic2: on iicbus2 iic3: on iicbus3 iicbus4: on iicbb2 addr 0x0 iic4: on iicbus4 iic5: on iicbus5 iicbus6: on iicbb3 addr 0x0 iic6: on iicbus6 iic7: on iicbus7 iicbus8: on iicbb4 addr 0x0 iic8: on iicbus8 iic9: on iicbus9 iicbus10: on iicbb5 addr 0x0 iic10: on iicbus10 iic11: on iicbus11 iicbus12: on iicbb6 addr 0x0 iic12: on iicbus12 iic13: on iicbus13 iicbus14: on iicbb7 addr 0x0 iic14: on iicbus14 iic15: on iicbus15 info: [drm] Supports vblank timestamp caching Rev 1 (10.10.2010). info: [drm] Driver supports precise vblank timestamp query. info: [drm] Enabling RC6 states: RC6 off, RC6p off, RC6pp off drmn1: taking over the fictitious range 0xa0000000-0xb0000000 info: [drm] Connector LVDS-1: get mode from tunables: info: [drm] - kern.vt.fb.modes.LVDS-1 info: [drm] - kern.vt.fb.default_mode info: [drm] Connector VGA-1: get mode from tunables: info: [drm] - kern.vt.fb.modes.VGA-1 info: [drm] - kern.vt.fb.default_mode info: [drm] Connector HDMI-A-1: get mode from tunables: info: [drm] - kern.vt.fb.modes.HDMI-A-1 info: [drm] - kern.vt.fb.default_mode info: [drm] Connector DP-1: get mode from tunables: info: [drm] - kern.vt.fb.modes.DP-1 info: [drm] - kern.vt.fb.default_mode fbd1 on drmn1 VT: Replacing driver "efifb" with new "fb". info: [drm] Changing LVDS panel from (+hsync, +vsync) to (-hsync, -vsync) info: [drm] Initialized i915 1.6.0 20080730 error: [drm:pid0:intel_lvds_enable] *ERROR* timed out waiting for panel to power off Can someone please tell me what those messages (especially the last 4 messages) mean? Are they somehow related to the reason why the screen freezes when the intel driver is loaded during the launch of X? I rebooted in August and all was fine, rebooted in mid-November (with then-current 10.0 software) to find the problems below. I installed 10.1 today with no change in behavior. Following list archive instructions to rebuild packages didn't fix the problem (but did eliminate an ABI major version mismatch error message). A Radeon HD 5450 (now installed) and an older Radeon behave the same. Both are PCIe cards. The kernel says "[drm] RADEON_IS_PCIE" if I start X. There are two problems: 1. When X exits the screen never switches back to console mode. It freezes with the image on the X server when it exits. The text console is running behind the frozen graphics. I can login blind as root and reboot. I can rerun xinit and see my compressed windows again. But I can't see the console. (I don't use graphical login. I log in on the console and run xinit.) 2. On a PA272W 2560x1440 monitor the image is horizontally compressed into the middle half of the screen. The image is mangled as I would if half of the pixels were dropped. I think it is trying to display 2560 pixels but setting up some mode parameters wrong. On a lower resolution monitor the image is fine, but see item 1. Any advice? Configuration and logs follow. $ pkg info|grep xf86 libXxf86dga-1.1.4_2 X DGA Extension libXxf86misc-1.0.3_2 X XF86-Misc Extension libXxf86vm-1.1.3_2 X Vidmode Extension xf86-input-keyboard-1.8.0_6 X.Org keyboard input driver xf86-input-mouse-1.9.0_5 X.Org mouse input driver xf86-video-ati-7.5.0 X.Org ati display driver xf86-video-intel-2.21.15_5 Driver for Intel integrated graphics chipsets xf86-video-mach64-6.9.4_4 X.Org mach64 display driver xf86-video-nv-2.1.20_5 X.Org nv display driver xf86-video-openchrome-0.3.3_4 X.Org openChrome display driver xf86-video-r128-6.9.2_4 X.Org r128 display driver xf86-video-vesa-2.3.3_4 X.Org vesa display driver xf86dga-1.0.3_1 Test program for the XFree86-DGA extension xf86dgaproto-2.1 XFree86-DGA extension headers xf86driproto-2.1.1 XFree86-DRI extension headers xf86miscproto-0.9.3 XFree86-Misc extension headers xf86vidmodeproto-2.3.1 XFree86-VidModeExtension extension headers Standard error of xinit (including X server output): X.Org X Server 1.12.4 Release Date: 2012-08-27 X Protocol Version 11, Revision 0 Build Operating System: FreeBSD 10.0-RELEASE-p9 amd64 Current Operating System: FreeBSD atropos 10.1-RELEASE FreeBSD 10.1-RELEASE #0 r274401: Tue Nov 11 21:02:49 UTC 2014 root@releng1.nyi.freebsd.org:/usr/obj/usr/src/sys/GENERIC amd64 Build Date: 10 October 2014 01:55:22AM Current version of pixman: 0.32.6 Before reporting problems, check http://wiki.x.org to make sure that you have the latest version.
