I've tried upgrading to 10.1, but I'm getting an error message. There are a couple of issues: 1) I'm content to just rebuild curl if that's what it takes to get VirtualBox going, but how should I do that? I've been using the App Cafe whenever I install any new apps. When I check there I see that curl is installed, but I don't see any mechanism to rebuild it. Should I update my ports collection and rebuild it from ports? Will this conflict with the PBI= ? 2) When I try to upgrade to the 10.1, I'm getting the error pasted in below. I've tried several times and googled for answers but I'm not finding a solution. Can you point me in the right direction? Of course, you can try to (re)build any PC-BSD package form ports, for example, if you need to change some compile time options. But then you need to have /usr/ports of the same "version" as from what is PC-BSD packages built and not the one from FreeBSD, because FreeBSD ports tree is ahead and contains different versions of applications and by mixing it, you can have some problems with dependencies etc. PC-BSD is not using PBI format of packages any more. It is using the same pkg format as FreeBSD. As I was pretty sure I had a working VirtualBox 4.3.26 before, I tracked all the changes since the last successful VirtualBox use, and the only "significant" thing was that I upgraded my base system for FreeBSD-SA-15:06.openssl (and the fix for that, so I'm up-to-date with releng/10.1 (r280275). After some time of poking the source and adding more debug statements and asserts (debugging suid code...), I got the following backtrace in my core dump (abbreviated): (gdb) bt #0 0x00000008033257c5 in OPENSSL_ia32_cpuid () from /usr/local/lib/libcrypto.so.8 #1 0x0000000805f88eb9 in ?? () from /libexec/ld-elf.so.1 #7 0x00000000004042d9 in supR3HardenedMainInitRuntime (fFlags=3) Having different versions of a library calling each other (base openssl vs. ports openssl) is most certainly a bad thing. More digging showed that the libcryptos where pulled in by libcurl.so.4. That (curl) in turn links against ports openssl when found (there's even code in the Makefile to stop the build when one tries forcing the use of base openssl), but happily pulls in base openssl via it's dependencies. One instance of the base openssl was found in librtmp and could be solved by recompiling that. The other problem was with the use of "GSSAPI_BASE" (base system GSSAPI) in curl - which is the default, according to a curl-less machine in the corner. In the short run, people affected by the VirtualBox problem should check if /usr/local/lib/virtualbox/VBoxRT.so links against both (base and ports) libcryptos (use ldd) - if so, check libcurl (and if that does not help, the other shared libraries) for libcrypto mixup. In the slightly longer run - how do we want to fix this? I can imagine preventing the use of GSSAPI_BASE when ports openssl is detected - there's similar code already for preventing WITH_OPENSSL_BASE usage when ports openssl is installed. OTOH this will not help in case the "wrong" openssl is pulled in via some other dependency (librtmp in my case). Both systems are FreeBSD 10.1-Release with latest updates (via freebsd-update) 64 bit and without X. VirtualBox runs in headless mode. I succeeded in both cases, both systems are running well and no problems at all. Considering the message by Christoph Moench-Tegeder: https://lists.freebsd.org/pipermail/freebsd-emulation/2015-March/012390.h= tml - I have no OpenSSL from ports built. I hope this might help as VirtualBox is very important for FreeBSD "completeness". P.S. Sorry, I've messed up with the "reply to list" again... Perhaps you're lucky. Going slightly deeper into the gory details: virtualbox uses the environment (VBOX_XPCOM_HOME) to "find itself". Also, here and in some reports we had the "environment corrupt" message, that's from libc, indicating that an entry in the environment is malformed (not NAME=VALUE) - this should (can?) not happen when you use the environment "normally". I could get around that message (and get virtualbox working) by making the environment smaller, that is, removing entries (one does not really need TERMCAP or LC_* for starting virtualbox...). I pinpointed the location of my problem by peppering the virtualbox code with assert()s on parts of the environment... Once I had removed the second (the base system) libcrypto, the environment (and surrounding memory, as far as I can tell) does not get corrupted anymore, so I claim causality on the base of correlation :) (it's completely plausible that data structure mismatch between the two versions of openssl may cause out-of-bounds memory access and related trouble). Some update to curl during March caused curl to link to base when openssl port is requested there. Rolling curl back to Mar 1 version removes libssl.so duplicate, but doesn't fix virtualbox. For me VirtualBox breaks with some strange message about environment corruption. And on the simplified environment it freezes on some mutex wait. Totally broken, caused by some updates 1-2 weeks ago. So i am happy to announce that I find something that you may like: I am using FreeBSD 11 as a host [r280928:GENERIC amd64 ]. So in '-current' Installed on it virtualbox 4.3.26 and tried to run a linux guest as the virtual machine. So, what is the trouble? 1) when I installed vbox from 'pkg install', the HOST machine exits by KERNEL PANIC at the exactly time that I 'power up' the guest machine. 2) when I installed vbox from 'make install', the HOST machine exits by KERNEL PANIC at the exactly time that I 'power down' the guest machine. Here is the crash.txt that I dumped at the kernel panic prompt. https://gist.github.com/vinnix/819c210986da439136ef Obs.: all these tests are reproducible here in my environment. and all times that i did the test, i also rebuild the kmod and reboot the machine. thank you in advance for your time, best regards, --=20 Vin=C3=ADcius Abrah=C3=A3o Bazana Schmidt [vinnix]=E2=84=A2 aka: Vin=C3=ADcius Abrah=C3=A3o Bazana Schmidt vischmidt.wordpress.com twitter.com/vischmidt From owner-freebsd-emulation@FreeBSD.ORG Sat Apr 4 05:02:58 2015 Return-Path: Delivered-To: vbox@freebsd.org Received: from mx1.freebsd.org (mx1.freebsd.org [IPv6:2001:1900:2254:206a::19:1]) (using TLSv1.2 with cipher AECDH-AES256-SHA (256/256 bits)) (No client certificate requested) by hub.freebsd.org (Postfix) with ESMTPS id C3D75952; Sat, 4 Apr 2015 05:02:58 +0000 (UTC) Received: from mail-wi0-x231.google.com (mail-wi0-x231.google.com [IPv6:2a00:1450:400c:c05::231]) (using TLSv1.2 with cipher ECDHE-RSA-AES128-GCM-SHA256 (128/128 bits)) (Client CN "smtp.gmail.com", Issuer "Google Internet Authority G2" (verified OK)) by mx1.freebsd.org (Postfix) with ESMTPS id 461CC65D; Sat, 4 Apr 2015 05:02:58 +0000 (UTC) Received: by wixm2 with SMTP id m2so82633723wix.0; Fri, 03 Apr 2015 22:02:55 -0700 (PDT) DKIM-Signature: v=1; a=rsa-sha256; c=relaxed/relaxed; d=gmail.com; s=20120113; h=mime-version:in-reply-to:references:date:message-id:subject:from:to :cc:content-type; bh=J0AZzFRXeZyRREmaXOfK2yu2rmvODO3oNG9Rn+wqAFQ=; b=StFy0Q9oOEXa8seQrj/+toYqVxBFemUA7oOzevcmE5ZcuzHEPN3bLLG9lOqUCfE7bh HsUVdcqvhYDY7tU+4QsojjMBnvHDV9fOU61zCQhQKqaUNmNhfx3RwnZVj7bq35nisWrz SavNDBrXpdV6t/DRSyAdpx0qmuAnlLnLYs8fFAFNpYXJ6j+RxrlZa/96kid0SbB5f0ec pqiuFUR0SfCS4HvLTSD2REZdGRnTTM976A/3SEzXQMmGZYWE+rhy5oQHeIGtM5jX8kzN 4bJ+hjTCxm2jccrFG2Lwk5rKogI0du8glwIumbgEnVZPNtg9LNl2MNhS8D4u0Meuqt5A +Y4A== MIME-Version: 1.0 X-Received: by 10.194.174.225 with SMTP id bv1mr11002319wjc.101.1428123775309; Fri, 03 Apr 2015 22:02:55 -0700 (PDT) Received: by 10.194.90.65 with HTTP; Fri, 3 Apr 2015 22:02:55 -0700 (PDT) In-Reply-To: <551EF112.8060802@FreeBSD.org> References: <551DB8B5.6080700@FreeBSD.org> <551EF112.8060802@FreeBSD.org> Date: Sat, 4 Apr 2015 10:02:55 +0500 Message-ID: Subject: Re: Is FreeBSD ready for VirtualBox 5.0?
